KSCA launches new academy in Bangalore

The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has formally launched its academy in Bangalore, the first of a series of centres it plans to set up across the state. Its USP will rest on two principles: avoiding the traditional focus on age-group representation, and decentralising its coaching structure away from Bangalore and to other towns in Karnataka.Javagal Srinath, the former India fast bowler and current KSCA secretary, said around 360 teenage cricketers from around Karnataka had been picked for the first batch of the Royal Challengers KSCA academy, which is sponsored by the UB group, owners of the Bangalore IPL franchise. The academy hub will be at a 33-acre property in Alur, on the outskirts of Bangalore, where the KSCA has developed three grounds. One of the main aims of the academy was to enhance the talent pool available in the state, Srinath said. “We are trying to invest at least three years in each student we pick. What used to happen until now was that those who don’t make it after the age-group selection vanish (they are no longer in the system). The dearth of prominent cricketers from Karnataka in the past 14-16 years, for me, is because of the overemphasis on representation.”A little over a decade ago, the Indian team regularly featured three or four Karnataka players, but since then cricketers from the state, such as Robin Uthappa and fast bowlers Vinay Kumar and Abhimanyu Mithun, have struggled to become permanent members of the national team.Srinath said the academy, which will function throughout the year, will provide coaching and cricket facilities even to those who don’t make the state teams at the age-group level. “The boy has to be patient – and so must the parents, who are the biggest stakeholders. All they should worry about is whether the players’ skills are being developed.”Convincing students and their parents to stick with the game is one way to increase the available talent; providing top-quality infrastructure to the smaller cities in the state is another. Satellite academies are coming up in six other cities: Mysore, Shimoga, Mangalore, Tumkur, Hubli and Raichur. The Mysore branch will be inaugurated later this week.”I come from Mysore and I always had this grouse that the infrastructure in Mysore is not as good as it is in Bangalore,” Srinath said. “The lack of infrastructure gave me a false belief that my talent was not as good as those that are playing in Bangalore but now nobody in the smaller towns can complain about it.”The move to set up satellite academies is an addition to other attempts to spread the game in the state. The Karnataka Premier League, a Twenty20 league that featured teams from eight different zones in the state, has had two seasons in 2009 and 2010. Last year, a Ranji Trophy match was held in Shimoga for the first time in 32 years.

Harris expects to be left on sidelines

Ryan Harris believes he will struggle to force his way into Australia’s side for the first Test against West Indies in Barbados next month. Australia’s Test specialists, including Harris and his fast-bowling colleague Peter Siddle, have flown out to join the rest of the squad in the Caribbean for a three-day tour match ahead of the Test series. The warm-up game will help the selectors decide on their best attack for the Bridgetown Test, and a three-man pace attack of Ben Hilfenhaus, Peter Siddle and James Pattinson appears likely after their success in the home summer. Harris and Mitchell Starc are the other fast bowlers in the squad, while the spinners Nathan Lyon and Michael Beer will come into contention on the slow Caribbean pitches.Harris played in the last two Tests of Australia’s series against India after Pattinson was sidelined by injury but he was dropped from the ODI side in the tri-series that followed. A year ago, Harris was arguably Australia’s best Test bowler but he believes he will be on the sidelines for the start of the upcoming Test series.”I don’t think I will be starting,” Harris told reporters in Brisbane before departing. “Sidds had an amazing summer and so did Jimmy [Pattinson]. The only reason I got a game was because Jimmy went down. And Hilf has come back to his best. If those three don’t start, I will be in shock. They did such a good job against India this summer for us – they thoroughly deserve their spots over there.”Before he flew out to join the squad, Australia’s captain Michael Clarke mentioned the possibility of playing both Lyon and Beer in a two-man spin attack, which is another option for the selectors. Whatever the case, the Australians will need to work out how best to operate on pitches that will be quite different from those on which they defeated India 4-0 during the summer.”They have looked a bit slow and dead,” Siddle said of the limited-overs pitches in the Caribbean. “It will be interesting to see how the Test pitches come up. You will need patience and consistency. Ryano showed that in Sri Lanka. Reverse swing will come into it as well, and we have to bowl well with the spinner or spinners – Nathan and Beery might bowl together, you never know.”The batting line-up is expected to be more settled, with Ed Cowan and David Warner likely to open and Shane Watson expected to bat at No.3. The three-day tour match against the WICB Board President’s XI starts at Kensington Oval on April 2.

Dhawan, Rahane put Rest of India in charge

ScorecardAjinkya Rahane was one of two centurions for Rest of India on the first day•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Two centuries – an aggressive, substantial one from Shikhar Dhawan and a solid, unbeaten one from Ajinkya Rahane – almost ensured that Rest of India couldn’t lose the Irani Cup outright. They scored quickly on the opening day against Ranji Trophy champions Rajasthan, lost only three wickets, and amassed 400 by stumps in Jaipur.Dhawan scored 177 off 165 balls, an innings that contained 32 fours and one six. Having been dropped from India’s one-day squad after the tour of West Indies, Dhawan did not waste this opportunity to stake his claim again. He added 190 runs for the second wicket with Rahane, who adapted smoothly to the change in format. Having impressed during the limited-overs games in England, Rahane switched into five-day mode and batted with patience to end the day on 117 off 212 balls. He will have to revert to one-day mode against England after the Irani Cup tie is settled.Rajasthan’s bowlers struggled, with last season’s hero Deepak Chahar going wicketless for 120 runs in 21 overs. His new-ball partner Aniket Choudhary also conceded more than four an over in 17 overs.Dhawan began to attack as early as the day’s fifth over, when he hit four consecutive boundaries off Chahar. The first two were driven through mid-off, the next two pulled and cut as the bowler dropped short. The other opener, Abhinav Mukund, wasn’t as quick, his first fours coming in the 12th over when he drove and glided Choudhary down the ground and through gully. Dhawan reached his 50 off the first ball after drinks, off 51 balls.Rajasthan’s first bit of relief came in the 19th over, when Mukund edged medium-pacer Sumit Mathur on to his stumps. Rest of India were 77 for 1. Choudhary should have dismissed Dhawan, on 80, in the final over before lunch but Chahar misjudged the top-edge at long-leg. The Dhawan-Rahane stand took Rest of India to lunch on 122 for 1.There was little joy for Rajasthan in the second session. Dhawan got to his century off 119 deliveries, sweeping offspinner Madhur Khatri for two, and celebrated with a six over midwicket next ball. He and Rahane added 145 runs to their partnership and only shortly before tea were they separated. Dhawan had clouted Chahar down the ground for three successive boundaries but in the next over, from Khatri, he missed a slog sweep and was bowled. Rest of India went into tea on 280 for 2.Choudhary began the final session positively for Rajasthan, trapping Manish Pandey lbw for 16. The dismissal cut short a bright start, for Pandey had struck four boundaries during his brief stay. Rahane then led a period of consolidation for Rest of India, moving steadily towards his century, which he reached with a straight drive to the boundary off Chahar. He had a solid partner in Parthiv Patel, who was unbeaten on 55, and they added 113 runs for the fourth wicket before stumps.

Spin hard and believe, says Warne

Belief, technique, and above all else, spin. Shane Warne encapsulated the desired legacy of Terry Jenner by saying that all Australia slow bowlers had to be implored to ‘rev’ the ball as hard as they could, and to a build a career from that most basic of tenets.Jenner’s final farewell was attended by more than 600 guests in an emotive memorial service at Adelaide Oval, where the speakers included his daughter Trudianne, Warne, fellow pupil Cullen Bailey and Jenner’s long-time partner Ann. Aged 66, Jenner died on May 25 in his suburban Adelaide home a little more than a year after suffering a massive heart attack while coaching in London.Other guests such as Ian and Greg Chappell, Rod Marsh, Ashley Mallett, Doug Walters, Martin Kent, Ray Bright, Bryce McGain, Darren Lehmann, Jason Gillespie and the Australian coach Tim Nielsen reminisced about Jenner’s impact on many inside and outside cricket over the course of a life that saw hard times as well as good.Warne, a pudgy youth with one expensive Test wicket to his name in 1992 when Jenner urged him to start making more sacrifices in the name of his art, said most of his advice to young spin bowlers was rooted in Jenner’s teaching.”Most of the stuff I pass on to spinners is mainly from TJ,” Warne said before the service. “With 21 or 22 years of being involved with first-class cricket myself I’ve obviously learned a bit, but the major messages are exactly the same as what TJ was telling me 20-odd years ago. I’m passing on the same sort of stuff and have done for a long time.”It’s not so much a technical thing. As a spin bowler you’ve got to spin the ball, that’s the most important message that TJ taught me, if I want to look at a fast bowler I’ll watch him bowl fast, if I want to watch a swing bowler I’ll watch him swing the ball, but if I want to watch a spin bowler I’ll see him spin the ball. So that’s the No.1 message to any spinner that I’ve always passed on.”There’s just little things, a little bit technically but it’s more about the way you think, your attitude to it, and your captain being one of your best friends who you might share a beer with at the end, that might give you an extra over here or there too. [Also] field settings, what to look for in batsmen, how to approach different situations, Twenty20’s impact.”Jenner’s death has left a vast gap in Australian cricket’s knowledge about slow bowling, something emphasised by the fact that a spin summit was taking place in Brisbane on the same day as his funeral. Warne said he would keep pushing to educate those that had followed him about the best way to bowl spin, and had already spoken with the new captain Michael Clarke about the strengths and weaknesses of various members of the modest Australian spin stable.”I think we’ve got a lot of good spinners at the moment, it’s just about getting them some confidence, making them believe, getting the captains to back them, giving them exposure at first-class level, and supporting them,” Warne said. “Getting a process in place from CA, all the way down to grassroots cricket, and the same messages going out there all the time – that’s the most important thing.”The spin bowling summits in Brisbane I’ve helped out the last few years, I’ve only just got back from India and I’ve got my kids for a couple of weeks. I haven’t been able to get up there this time but I’m always available, I’ve spoken to Michael Clarke a few times about some of the spinners and things to work on and I’ll keep giving back to Australian cricket like I have done for a while, and helping in any way I can.”In Brisbane, Jason Krejza emphasised the difficulties facing those who had followed Warne by discussing how confused he had been after being jettisoned from the Test team only one match after taking 12 wickets on debut against India in Nagpur in 2008.”I was a bit of a mental case [after being dropped] and thought about things way too far ahead and too deep,” Krejza said. “I just had to concentrate on how I was playing the next day, that’s the simplest way to do it – it doesn’t do your head in. I had to get back to being the attacking spinner that I always was and stay consistent. I won’t stop being an attacking spinner now – I can’t go the other way, I have to stay in that mindset.”Warne summed up Jenner’s advice as often being of the kind that seemed obvious only after it had been suggested.”I was very lucky to come under his guidance and tutelage to teach me so many wonderful things,” he said. “Just some simple things you never really thought of but when he said it you’d be ‘yeah, ok, that makes sense’, and then we’d go away and work on them.”We had ongoing discussions about different things. One of the things was about the line you should bowl for a legspinner, it took probably 21 years for him to agree I could actually bowl leg stump – let’s call it a discussion rather than a debate – but we’ll all miss him.”I wouldn’t have been able to do what I did for Australian cricket if it wasn’t with his help.”

Botswana conditions suit Nigeria says Ofem

Nigeria captain Endurance Ofem has said he is pleased with his side’s form ahead of the World Cricket League Division Seven tournament

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Apr-2011Nigeria captain Endurance Ofem has said he is pleased with his side’s form ahead of the World Cricket League Division 7 tournament, which begins on May 1 in Gaborone, Botswana. Ofem, 28, is confident that the hard work the team has put in will show during the tournament, especially with the pitches in Botswana resembling those in Nigeria.”We have been working hard as a unit, we’ve been in South Africa since April 14 and have had the opportunity to train at the indoor facilities in Benoni,” he said. “I’m happy the guys are hitting good form ahead of the tournament in Botswana.”In Botswana we will be playing on hard surfaces, similar to the conditions back home in Nigeria. I feel we have a chance and the team should be able get going in those conditions.”Ofem is also pleased that the side is made up of a number of players who have come through the development system put in place by the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF). “The NCF, over the last 15 years, has taken grassroots development as a key objective. If we look back at the Under-19 Cricket World Cup Qualifiers in 2001, when we first participated as West Africa, Nigeria provided nine of the 13 players that represented West Africa.”Later, when we played as Nigeria in 2003 and onwards, you will see names such as myself, Adekunle Adegbola, Tope Olayinka, Akabogu Okwudili and Saheed Akolade, among others, coming through,” he said. This, he added, shows the board’s belief in developing young talent. “Most of the players in the current side have been around from a young age.”Ofem singled out in-form batsmen Okwudili and Adegbola, as well as Oluseye Olympio, as players to watch out for. “Every member of this team has the ability to take games away from the opponent. Some of the countries in this tournament should be aware of in the form of Oluseye Olympio, Adekunle Adegbola and Emmanuel Okwudili.” Nigeria’s goal, he said, is to win their first game – the tournament opener against Norway – and move forward from there.

Ten Hag and Rangnick ‘pushing’ for Mitchell

Manchester United have been linked with a move for AS Monaco sporting director Paul Mitchell, Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg has reported.

The Lowdown: Mitchell profiled

Mitchell, who previously played in the Football League, is 40 years of age and has been with the Ligue 1 club since 2020.

He has previous experience of working in England as a chief scout with MK Dons, Southampton and Tottenham, admitting last year that he loves the Premier League.

Mitchell has also worked in Germany and the USA, but it looks as if he is wanted back in England ahead of Erik ten Hag’s first season in charge at Old Trafford.

The Latest: Plettenberg’s post

Plettenberg took to Twitter on Tuesday morning to share some news regarding Mitchell and Manchester United.

He revealed that both Ten Hag and Ralf Rangnick are ‘pushing’ for him to move to Old Trafford and have given him their endorsement, with Mitchell ‘open’ to the idea of leaving Monaco in the summer.

The Verdict: Smart move?

United will be losing chief scout Jim Lawlor and head of global scouting Marcel Bout over the summer, so bringing in someone like Mitchell could be a shrewd decision.

Mitchell was the mastermind behind successful Spurs deals for Dele Alli, Toby Alderweireld, Son Heung-Min and Kieran Trippier, while he also helped RB Leipzig to establish themselves in the Bundesliga.

It looks as if it will be an extremely busy summer off the pitch at Old Trafford, with up to 10 new signings potentially coming in, so finalising a deal for Mitchell to help Ten Hag over the coming months could be helpful.

Pakistan fight but South Africa retain control

Three Pakistan batsmen made half-centuries as they edged closer to saving the follow-on, but South Africa did enough throughout to keep a door to victory open

The Bulletin by Osman Samiuddin22-Nov-2010
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Misbah-ul-Haq’s presence in the middle is crucial to Pakistan’s fate in the Test•AFPPakistan found a good time to put up one of their most resolute collectivebatting displays of the year, defying South Africa on an engrossing secondday at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium. Three from the middle order madehalf-centuries as they edged closer to saving the follow-on, but SouthAfrica did enough throughout to keep a door to victory open. Two partnerships dominated the resistance, both centred most pleasantlyaround youth. The first was a 117-run stand between Azhar Ali and TaufeeqUmar that spanned much of the morning. Azhar was the centrifugal force.Rare among his younger countrymen in that he seems wired for Testsspecifically, Azhar has been Pakistan’s sleeper hit this year. The impression he made in England solidified here with another well-judgedvigil. There was more oomph to his third half-century of the series andnot only because the fields were attacking and open. He took on Dale and Morne Morkel whenever the opportunity arose but was most impressiveholding off the latter as he attacked his ribs. Azhar was jumpy but athumping pull to bring up the fifty shortly before the first drinks breakput paid to that plan temporarily. Later, as Morkel tried his luck again,he pulled him even more emphatically.Off the backfoot, Azhar in fact is strongest and most elegant, as Steyn foundin occasional punches through off. A first ton was there for Azhar’s taking;instead he now has two nineties. The second developed over the afternoon, a 105-run partnership betweenMisbah-ul-Haq and Asad Shafiq and it was the debutant who steered it. Quick of feetand hands, Shafiq has looked comfortable since his ODI debut earlier thisyear. His first Test yielded a similar sense. In at a genuinely trickyperiod soon after lunch when two wickets had fallen in two overs, Shafiqwas particularly bright against spin.To anything remotely short – and there was enough from Johan Botha – heleant back to cut. To much else he moved his feet to kill the length. Oncehe improvised, flipping Botha over his shoulder. One cut, off Paul Harris, made him the 20th Pakistan batsman to score a fifty on debut. Against pace he wasless forthright and less willing to use his feet, so it was a surprisethat he fell to Harris eventually. And this is the thing about world-class attacks: they are never out of it.They may not be up to much for a session or more, but eventually theirquality will out. Steyn was more world class than the rest, taking fourpelts at the batsmen through the day. In the morning he probed rather thanthreatened. It had been the way since his return from injury in the lastTest and the pace hasn’t yet touched the peaks it can.Lunch helped Steyn find some rhythm and swing, however; immediately he wastempting a restless Younis Khan into nibbling at delicious, late-bloomingoutswingers. A few overs later temptation became downfall. Younis squeezeda drive through gully but a ball later, reaching out again, drove straightto cover. It was infectious, for in his next over, Azhar drove loosely aswell, straight to mid-off. It wasn’t unplayable stuff, just gooddisciplines playing on the impatience of opponents and similar to hisbreakthrough performance against the same opponents in Karachi three yearsago. This gave South Africa their first real peek. The last spell mirrored the first, though given he had a fresh ball, itwasn’t incisive enough. But by then he had Harris, looking every inch acop from a 70s cop show, to fall back on. Like all left-arm spinners, hegenerally does well against Pakistan and he tied them down for much of theafternoon. Timely middle-order breakthroughs, from good bounce, in thelast session ensured South African ascendancy. It was needed, for Botha was poor, bizarrely starting his day’s work as aseamer before belatedly resuming his day-job deep into the afternoon;seven expensive overs later, perhaps he should’ve stuck to seam-up. Morkelwas never consistent enough with his lengths. In this relentlessness it was left to Misbah to keep up the fight. He wentnowhere to begin with but on a day of dismissals as soft as baby cheeks, hisability to stick around was admirable. He opened up on Botha and eventually thepacers as they tired; some of the pulls and clips, as well as the mannerof work, was reminiscent of his Test peak in 2007-08 in India. More willbe needed to avoid the follow-on.
