Crystal Palace make approach to sign another Tottenham player with Brennan Johnson

Crystal Palace are closing in on a deal for Tottenham winger Brennan Johnson in January, but he might not be their only signing from Spurs.

Crystal Palace closing in on January deal for Brennan Johnson

As per numerous reports, the Wales international is on Oliver Glasner’s January target list as Palace desperately seek attacking cover next month.

Johnson, who ended 2024/2025 as Tottenham’s top scorer in all competitions and bagged their Europa League final-winning goal in May, has found himself far more on the fringes under Thomas Frank.

The signing of Mohammed Kudus has reduced him to just six Premier League starts all season, with Johnson making the vast majority of his 16 league appearances off the bench.

He actually made an electric start to the campaign with two goals in his opening two top flight matches against Burnley and Man City, starting both games, but chances have been few and far between since then.

Now, reliable media sources report that Spurs are ready to let Johnson leave next month, and Palace are right at the front of the queue for his signature.

The Eagles face losing their boss at the end of this season.

ByEmilio Galantini

Indeed, David Ornstein and others now claim that the south Londoners have reached an agreement with Tottenham to sign the 24-year-old for around £35 million.

This is pending Johnson agrees to the switch, but if all goes to plan, then he will be a Palace player once the January window opens.

Interestingly, Johnson may not even be the only Spurs player who ends up at Selhurst Park in light of this.

Crystal Palace make approach for Radu Dragusin

According to Italian reporter Mirko Di Natale, via X, Palace have also spoken to Tottenham about defender Radu Dragusin and his availability.

The Romania international made his first appearance for 11 months on Sunday when Glasner’s side lost 1-0 to the Lilywhites, replacing match-winner Archie Gray in the dying minutes.

Dragusin was sidelined with an ACL injury which took him nearly a year to recover from, and he now finds himself behind the likes of Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Kevin Danso in the pecking order.

Highly-rated young centre-back Luka Vuskovic is also due back from his loan at Hamburg at the end of the season, potentially limiting Dragusin’s chances even more.

The 23-year-old is attracting Serie A interest and Italian media sources claim that Dragusin is set for crunch sit-down talks with Spurs over his future as January looms.

Now, Di Natale reports that Palace have asked for information about Dragusin as they potentially look to raid Frank’s team once again.

Di Natale’s suggestion they could strike a loan deal will no doubt appeal to Palace, with the club handed a chance to audition Dragusin before signing him permanently for £26 million.

However, they’ll also be wary of his injury history, and Palace need to be very mindful when potentially searching for Marc Guehi’s long-term heir.

A transfer to excite Arsenal fans for the future?

It was well after the midway point of last season when heads started to turn and take serious notice of Lyon’s Clement Grenier. Those free-kicks against Nice and Rennes did a lot for his reputation and the comparisons to former Lyon midfielder Juninho were naturally rising to the surface. And what can only be described as fairly routine, the rising star in French football has been linked with a move to Arsenal, even amid hope that Arsene Wenger would deviate from his well-trodden hunting ground of Ligue 1.

Following the links between Grenier and Arsenal, which only really came into being following Wenger’s praise of the player, there have been fans stating that the current Arsenal squad are not in need of another player whose intelligence and play resembles that of Samir Nasri. ‘What will he bring to the club?’ and ‘the money should be focused elsewhere’ are the most common reactions to this potential signing, completely ignoring the idea that football clubs do generally add gifted players, especially those who could be had for bargain fees, with a view to the long term.

[cat_link cat=”arsenal” type=”list”]

Maybe there’s a reason why it took so long to completely appreciate Grenier’s qualities. Jean-Michel Aulas, the Lyon president, was ready to sell Grenier last summer but was persuaded to keep hold of the player. Now, 12 months on, Aulas is quick to compare Grenier’s worth to Lyon as identical to that of Mario Goetze to Dortmund, stating that the player can be had for €37million.

But that’s not the case – far from it. Where once Aulas and Lyon held such a strong stance in the transfer market, that authority simply doesn’t wash on this occasion. Grenier’s contract is up next summer, and considering Lyon didn’t play Champions League football last season, they can hardly afford to let the player walk for free.

Wenger, despite having the most prominent voices inside the Emirates promise fans a summer of excitement and ‘real’ spend, is highly unlikely to look past a young talent who can be of genuine use to Arsenal even after this coming season.

The promising nature of Arsenal’s squad at the moment means they certainty don’t need Grenier, meaning his addition will only go on to strengthen the club’s charge for silverware. It’s a matter of bringing in numbers rather than just replacing – and how often have Arsenal supporters sung that line to Wenger? Grenier does have the talent to be a hit in English football and with Arsenal, even if he is a little way off from reaching his peak. The talent is there, but this isn’t a Mario Goetze, as Aulas tried to imply.

The Lyon midfielder has already done some excellent things in Ligue 1 this past season, showing evidence of his ability to create and score. But Arsenal aren’t stretched for cash going into the summer market, and there really is little in the way of a gamble when the once proud and resilient Lyon hold such little power in the negotiations for this particular deal.

This will be a transfer that echoes what Wenger has tried to do in the past, picking up young players who have already displayed a quality that can be moulded to fit the needs of a club of Arsenal’s stature. Even with all the money that’s said to be available, Arsenal cannot spend £25-30million on three or four players each summer. And it really shouldn’t matter how much Grenier is likely to cost or whether he is needed in the team. Bayern Munich spent around €15million on Xherdan Shaqiri when they already had Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery and Thomas Muller for the wide positions. Following their treble-winning campaign, there continues to be enormous admiration for the quality in depth at the Allianz Arena. If Mesut Ozil were to become available to Arsenal, would fans turn their noses up at the German simply because the squad are well-numbered in attacking midfielders?

Grenier is a prospect for now, despite showing plenty of potential over the past few months. He is also very much a player who can adapt and execute the style of play that so many want to see at Arsenal again. It should be about the club filling their squad with technically able players and those who can complement one another. Grenier, alongside the necessary big names this summer, could be a very good signing for Arsenal.

James or Harrison could miss out for Leeds

One of Leeds United duo Dan James and Jack Harrison will be dropped against Leicester City if Jesse Marsch plays two in attack, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Leeds face vital trip to Leicester

The Whites make the trip to the King Power Stadium on Saturday lunchtime, as Marsch takes charge of his first game as manager.

It is another massive afternoon in the Premier League relegation battle, with Leeds now only two points clear of 18th-placed Burnley, having played one game more.

It could be that Marsch goes with a two-man central attack for the match, which would immediately put others at risk of losing their place in the starting lineup.

[freshpress-quiz id=“383507″]

The Latest: James or Harrison could miss out

Speaking to Give Me Sport, O’Rourke claimed James and Harrison are the players most likely to miss out this weekend:

“Someone like a Dan James or a Jack Harrison probably have to make way. If they’re going to play two up front, he can’t fit everybody in.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-36/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: Harrison deserves to be axed

In truth, Harrison is far more deserving of losing his place in the team than James, with the latter impressing of late after a slow start to life at Elland Road.

The Welshman has scored twice and registered one assist in his last five league appearances, which is a good return considering Leeds’ struggles as a team.

In comparison, Harrison is enduring a season to forget barring a hat-trick away to West Ham, not producing a single goal involvement in his last six outings.

Whether or not James is used out wide or centrally remains to be seen but he doesn’t deserve to be dropped after a promising spell in the side.

Celtic: Kieran Maguire makes Conor McGregor claim

Financial expert Kieran Maguire has been reacting to Conor McGregor’s interest in taking over at Celtic, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Links resurface

UFC star McGregor, who is a Celtic fan, admitted last year that he had a conversation over buying a stake in the club from Dermot Desmond.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-copy-2/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

As we know, that failed to materialise, with Desmond adamant 12 months ago that his shares were not for sale.

However, reports earlier this month relayed some fresh comments from the Irishman, who once again admitted that he is keen to take over in Glasgow.

The Latest: Maguire’s comments

Maguire, who contributes for Sky Sports, was talking to Football Insider over the possibility of McGregor taking over at Parkhead.

He stated that McGregor, worth $200m (£150m), would need the help of a consortium if he is to have a realistic chance of buying the club.

“McGregor might be front of house as far a consortium is concerned.

“He doesn’t have the resources himself, but he does make a fortune out of his own brand.

“I don’t think he would be advised to buy Celtic or another football club alone, it would have to be as part of a group.

“However, he would be the public face and centre of attention if such a deal was to take place.”

The Verdict: Spot on

You’d expect that if a deal was to ever go through, McGregor would need to be part of some form of investment group but would be the centre of attention of a potential takeover.

It would certainly be interesting, but at this moment in time, it doesn’t look as if Desmond is going anywhere, even though he is reportedly looking to give more responsibility to his son.

We may well see McGregor at Celtic one day, as he does seem to be extremely keen on acquiring shares in a football club, but fans who want him at the club may have to remain patient for the time being.

Newcastle predicted XI vs Chelsea

Newcastle United return to action today as they travel away from home to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea in the Premier League.

The Magpies won 2-1 against Southampton last time out to extend their unbeaten run in the division to nine matches. Chris Wood and Bruno Guimaraes both scored their first goals for the club to seal the three points and now they come up against the champions of Europe.

Eddie Howe will surely be keen to hit ten games without a loss in the Premier League, but will he alter his line-up from the one that beat the Saints?

Here is our predicted XI…

Dubravka, Manquillo, Schar, Burn, Targett, Guimaraes, Shelvey, Joelinon, Fraser, Almiron, Wood (4-3-3)

We are predicting that he will make three alterations to the side, with Javier Manquillo, Joelinton and Miguel Almiron coming in.

Emil Krafth sustained an injury at St. Mary’s on Thursday night and his unavailability would open up a spot at right-back in the XI. If he misses out, Manquillo is the only natural right-back left in the senior squad and he would, therefore, be the logical option to start in the back four.

In midfield, we are predicting that Joelinton will make his return from injury. The £80k-per-week colossus missed out against Southampton and could now come in for Joe Willock after the ex-Arsenal man’s underwhelming showing in midweek.

As per SofaScore, he lost seven individual duels and was dribbled past three times. He also missed a ‘big chance’ and Howe may look to his Brazilian teammate’s physical strength to replace him. Joelinton has won 7.7 duels per game, whilst making 3.4 tackles and interceptions per match, this season and his work rate will be key to stopping the likes of Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho.

Finally, Jacob Murphy could make way for Almiron on the right. FFC published an article explaining why the former must be axed from the XI and we are predicting Howe to take him out of the team for this clash with Chelsea.

Martin Keown dubbed him “annoying” after, what he deemed to be, a dive in a Premier League match against Aston Villa previously. Replacing him, Almiron could offer defensive quality and work rate on the flank to deal with Chelsea’s attacking threat. He has averaged 2.2 tackles and interceptions per game and this shows that he likes to get stuck in against the ball.

We are predicting that the rest of the team from the one that played against Southampton will remain the same.

Newcastle sign Leeds ace Hughes

Lee Ryder has revealed that Newcastle United have now signed youngster Alfie Hughes from Leeds United as they wrap up some out-of-summer business before Thursday’s clash with Everton.

The Lowdown: One to watch

At 19 years of age, Hughes is certainly one to watch, having recently starred in the U23’s 1-0 win over Birmingham City while on trial.

Before that, he had made 23 appearances in total for Leeds’ youth set-up, scoring one goal and making two assists (Transfermarkt), and could now be drafted into the Academy at St. James’ Park.

The Latest: Signed

Writing in his latest piece for The Chronicle, Ryder has revealed that the North East club have now signed Hughes after his trial, with Academy sources confirming that the winger is currently being considered for a permanent spot.

His contract at Elland Road doesn’t technically expire until the summer, but the Tyneside outfit have now made their move.

It has not officially been announced yet heading into the game away at Everton in the Premier League, so perhaps we could see something on official club channels in the next few hours.

The Verdict: Smart business

With his contract expiring, it is smart business from the Magpies to snap Hughes up now, so that he can continue his development in their Academy.

Describing himself as a ‘creative’ player, Eddie Howe will certainly have one eye on him, with the view of potentially promoting him to the first team when he is ready.

Sunderland set to make Ross Stewart offer

A major update has emerged on Sunderland striker Ross Stewart and his future at the Stadium of Light…

What’s the talk?

According to the Daily Record, the Black Cats are preparing to pin him down to an extended contract with the club to avoid losing him in the summer.

The report claims that they are aware of growing interest in his services after his call-up to the Scotland national team and Kristjaan Speakman is now eyeing up an imminent offer in an attempt to keep him on Wearside.

Buzzing

This update will surely leave the Stadium of Light faithful buzzing as they will be keen to see Stewart commit his future to the club.

He has been phenomenal in League One and allowing him to leave in the summer would be a major blow to the squad. His average SofaScore rating of 7.29 is unrivalled within the Sunderland squad and this suggests that he has been the club’s most consistent performer throughout the campaign as he has maintained a high standard all throughout 2021/22.

The Scot’s goalscoring numbers reflect his performances as he has found the back of the net a whopping 22 times in 39 outings for the Black Cats. He has been able to consistently bang in the goals in the third tier, whilst he has also shown off his link-up play with six ‘big chances’ created and 1.4 key passes per game.

This shows that he has been a major force at the top end of the pitch for Lee Johnson and Alex Neil this season. He can score and create goals as the number nine and his contributions have been key to the club’s promotion challenge as they sit in the top-six as it stands.

Therefore, his exit would leave Neil with a huge gap to fill in his starting XI. This would be particularly painful should the club achieve promotion to the Championship as it would, naturally, be harder to find a replacement whilst playing at a higher level in the football pyramid.

This is why fans will be delighted to read that Speakman is set to offer Stewart a new contract. They will surely want to see him scoring goals for Sunderland for as long as possible and it would be intriguing to see how he would fare in the second tier if the Black Cats end up being promoted.

Rangers’ 3 worst players v Celtic

Rangers’ title hopes suffered a hammer blow on Sunday as they lost 2-1 to their Glasgow arch-rivals at Ibrox.

Aaron Ramsey put Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side in front after just three minutes, but Tom Rogic quickly pegged the hosts back before Cameron Carter-Vickers scored what proved to be the winner shortly before half-time.

The defeat leaves Rangers six points adrift of the league-leading Hoops with just six games left to play.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-2/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Here at The Transfer Tavern, we delve into the three worst-rated starting outfielders for the Gers as per statistical specialists SofaScore, with players required to feature for at least 45 minutes for ranking. This trio were dribbled past six times and collectively lost possession 60 times on an afternoon to forget.

Leon Balogun – 6.4/10

Balogun made just his second league start in the Gers’ last seven matches, but the figures suggest that he failed to deliver on the big occasion.

He lost half of his ground duels (two out of four) and half of his aerial battles (four out of eight), with Celtic players able to dribble past him on two occasions. He also gave away possession 12 times and misplaced 10 of the 52 passes that he attempted (nearly 20%).

John Lundstram – 6.6/10

Unlike Balogun, Lundstram has been very much in favour recently, with this his sixth start in seven league matches. Perhaps his place in the team won’t be as secure after this showing, though.

The headline for the midfielder was that he made the error leading to Carter-Vickers’ goal. The former Sheffield United man was unable to clear, and Rangers were duly punished.

Beyond that, he was dribbled past once, lost three ground duels (42.8%) and turned the ball over 10 times.

James Tavernier 6.7/10

Gers captain Tavernier is generally one of the first names on the teamsheet but he didn’t quite make the impact that he would have desired on Sunday.

The right-back gave the ball away a whopping 38 times, at least 15 more than anybody else on the pitch, while only two of the 17 crosses he attempted during the game were accurate.

Unfortunately, he also led the way in the undesirable ‘dribbled past’ stakes (on three) and lost eight of his 15 duels overall (53%).

In other news, Rangers have also been dealt an off-field blow.

Southampton: Report makes Cullen claim

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Southampton are interested in signing RSC Anderlecht midfielder Josh Cullen in the summer transfer window.

The lowdown: Making of the man

Signed for £900,000 from West Ham in October 2020 (Soccerbase), the 25-year-old has rapidly become a regular feature in Vincent Kompany’s side.

Having come through the academy in east London, Cullen struggled to break into David Moyes’ first-team plans and only made ten outings as a Hammer.

Instead, the previously eternal loanee headed for Belgium and could now have earned another move in a career on an upwards trajectory.

The latest: A ‘dream’ move beckons?

As per the report from TEAMtalk, the Saints are in the mix to bring Cullen back to England.

It’s claimed that Southampton, along with Wolves, Norwich City, Crystal Palace, Southampton, Leeds United, Burnley, Fulham and Sheffield United have all been ‘following’ the development of the 12-cap Republic of Ireland star.

Furthermore, West Ham are believed to be eyeing a reunion with the midfielder who has previously admitted to harbouring a ‘dream’ to return to the Premier League.

The verdict: value for money

Valued at £3.15million and under contract until 2023 (Transfermarkt), signing Cullen would likely be a relatively inexpensive deal for the Saints.

Currently, Ralph Hasenhuttl can only call upon the likes of James Ward-Prowse and Oriol Romeu when it comes to experienced central midfield options within the St Mary’s ranks, so adding the man once hailed as a ‘machine’ by former manager Lee Bowyer would be a smart move.

This season, Cullen has played 41 times across all competitions for Anderlecht, missing just 22 minutes of league action, proof of some outstanding and much-needed durability.

£7m Rangers duo have been so poor they make Miovski & Chermiti look good

Glasgow Rangers head coach Danny Rohl still may not know who his first-choice number nine is at Ibrox, despite being nine matches into his reign in the Scottish Premiership.

Bojan Miovski looked nailed on to be that player after he scored three goals in two matches against Kilmarnock and Ferencvaros, including a spectacular overhead kick in the latter.

However, the Macedonia international then lost 11 of his 13 duels, per Sofascore, against Hearts and journalist Joshua Barrie noted that Rohl was “frustrated” with his hold-up play in the game.

Who Rangers' first-choice striker should be

Youssef Chermiti came off the bench to score a consolation goal late on against Hearts in the 2-1 defeat at Tynecastle, his second goal in all competitions this season.

The Portugal U21 international has put himself in contention to return to the starting line-up against Motherwell with that strike, especially with how poor Miovski’s hold-up play was.

Despite that goal off the bench against Hearts, though, it still seems like the former Aberdeen centre-forward is the best option for Rohl to go with as his first-choice number nine in the here and now.

As you can see in the table above, Miovski has been far more impressive in front of goal on the whole this season, with more than twice as many goals, but both strikers have failed to deliver consistent quality.

Whilst Chermiti and Miovski are yet to prove themselves to be amazing signings due to their lack of goals, there is a Rangers duo signed in the summer who make them look good by comparison.

The £7m Rangers flops who make Chermiti and Miovski look good

Former sporting director Kevin Thelwell was given the resources to complete a squad overhaul for Russell Martin in the summer transfer window, and £7m was spent on a pair who have flopped badly so far.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The Light Blues signed right winger Oliver Antman for a fee of at least £3.5m from Go Ahead Eagles and attacking midfielder Thelo Aasgaard for a fee of £3.5m from Luton Town.

For a combined outlay of £7m, Rangers surely expected an immediate impact, with goals and assists, from the two attacking midfielders this season, but that has not been how it has played out.

Per Sofascore, Aasgaard has produced one goal and two assists in 25 appearances in all competitions for Rangers. That is made even less impressive by the fact that his assists were a pass to Djeidi Gassama on the halfway line before his long-range strike against Kilmarnock and a long clearance up the pitch that Chermiti scored from against Hearts.

Antman, meanwhile, has produced no goals and two assists in 20 appearances in all competitions for the Light Blues. His only goal contribution in the Premiership so far was his cross for James Tavernier’s goal in the clip above.

This means that the £7m pairing have combined for just one goal and four assists in 45 games between them, which is a dismal return from two attacking players, particularly given the nature of Aasgaard’s aforementioned assists.

Whilst the two strikers have not been amazing performers, given that neither have provided consistently in front of goal, their combined output looks good by comparison to the other signings made by Thelwell.

Antman was ruled out for eight weeks with a muscle injury at the start of this month, which means that it will be a while before he is able to get back on the pitch to prove people wrong and show that he was worth the £3.5m that was spent on him.

Aasgaard, meanwhile, needs to start showing an improvement in his performance level immediately, because the Norway international has not offered anywhere near enough quality as an attacking midfielder.
