Dighe appointed Mumbai selector

Former India wicketkeeper Sameer Dighe has been appointed as a Mumbai selector. Dighe, 40, along with ex-Mumbai offspinner Kiran Mokashi were the two faces in the four-member committee, replacing Shishir Hattangadi, who resigned midway last season, and former Indian fast bowler Abey Kuruvilla, who had completed his term.Dighe played six Tests and 23 ODIs for India, scoring 141 and 256 runs respectively. He also scored 3958 runs at 35.98 in the 83 first-class games he played. The panel, appointed by the Cricket Improvement Committee of the Mumbai Cricket Association led by former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar, will be headed by former Mumbai left-arm spinner Padmakar Shivalkar, and also includes ex-Mumbai fast bowler Abdul Ismail. Pravin Amre, who guided Mumbai to their 38th Ranji Trophy victory last season, will continue as the coach.

Lumb ton boosts Hampshire

A round-up from the latest action in the County Championship

Cricinfo staff19-Aug-2009Division OneYorkshire’s bowlers gave their team the upper hand on the first day of the Roses match by reducing Lancashire to 226 for 7 at Headingley. Yorkshire ambushed Lancashire by striking twice in the first three overs. Tim Bresnan struck first, inducing an edge from Steven Croft that was taken one-handed by Gerard Brophy, low and to his right. Matthew Hoggard dismissed Paul Horton in the next over, caught on the drive at backward point. Mal Loye and VVS Laxman had scored hundreds in the Roses match at Old Trafford but couldn’t repeat the feat today. Both batsmen were dismissed by Adil Rashid – Laxman made 50 – leaving Lancashire on 94 for 4. Mark Chilton then held up one end, remaining unbeaten on 73, but three more wickets fell at the other before play ended.Half-centuries from Hampshire’s openers followed by Michael Lumb’s unbeaten hundred led the visitors to a strong position – 345 for 3 – at the end of the first day against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge, although that was tempered by a season-ending injury to Michael Carberry. He and Jimmy Adams added 146 for the first wicket before Adams (55) played on against Andre Adams while trying to cut. Adams then caused Carberry’s injury with a rare delivery to climb off a length to break the left-hander’s left ring finger. Carberry had cracked 17 fours in his 86 but Lumb ensured that the momentum was not lost. He scored steadily, aid by a short boundary, well supported by James Vince and Liam Dawson, to finish on 103 at stumps.Click here for the report on the first day’s play between Somerset and Sussex at Taunton.Click here for John Ward’s report from Chester-le-Street where Durham are on top against Warwickshire.Division TwoIt was a good day for bowlers at Chesterfield with 13 wickets falling on the first day between Derbyshire and Northamptonshire. Derbyshire chose to bat and were dismissed for 255 after which Northamptonshire lost three batsmen on their way to 137. Derbyshire got off to a steady start, with their openers adding 47, before the trouble began. Jack Brooks and Johann van der Wath cut through the top order, finishing with 4 for 76 and 3 for 92 respectively, as Northamptonshire began to make inroads. They were stabilised a little by James Pipe and Garry Park who scored half-centuries but even their efforts were not enough to take the score past 300. In reply, Northamptonshire progressed to a sound 131 for 1 before they lost Rob White (62) and Stephen Peters in quick succession. White’s was an aggressive innings – he pulled Nantie Hayward for six and sliced Steffan Jones over third man for another – as he reached his fifty off only 41 balls.Half-centuries from Matthew Spriegel and Chris Schofield helped Surrey recover after a weak performance from their top order against Essex at Colchester. David Masters, Chris Wright and Danish Kaneria cut through the line-up, reducing Surrey to 136 for 5, with James Foster taking three catches, before Essex met resistance. Spriegel and Schofield revived the innings with a 127-run association for the sixth wicket before Tim Phillips had Spriegel caught for 61. Schofield, however, remained unbeaten on 87 as Surrey ended the day on 304 for 6.Josh Cobb, the 19-year old batsman, returned to the Leicestershire line-up after missing three games with a brisk 72 to lead his team to 332 for 8 against Gloucestershire at Grace Road. Cobb outscored Paul Nixon, who made 57, but Leicestershire kept losing wickets in clusters and were 182 for 5 at one stage. James Taylor, however, provided stability with his unbeaten 76 and, with help from James Benning (37) and Wayne White (23), led Leicestershire past 300. Steve Kirby was the best bowler for Gloucestershire, taking 3 for 64, while Jon Lewis and Richard Dawson took two each.

Journalist makes Alli exit claim at Spurs

Speaking to GiveMeSport, journalist Paul Brown of The Daily Star has shared what he believes on the future of Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli.

The Lowdown: Alli nightmare…

Since the beginning of last season, life at Spurs for the England international has not been pleasant to say the least.

It seems like an eternity since Alli’s astonishing breakthrough Premier League campaign of 2015/2016 yielded 10 goals and nine assists in 28 Premier League starts as a relative unknown (WhoScored).

Stellar 16/17 and 17/18 campaigns followed in terms of goals and assists combined but the 25-year-old has arguably been on an ever-so-slow downward spiral ever since.

Former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho exiled the midfielder over 2020/2021, with Alli starting just seven Premier League games, but his successor in Nuno Espirito Santo was far more generous.

Having attempted to get the best out of Alli, playing him in over half of Spurs’ top flight matches, the Portuguese could not revive his form before being sacked.

The arrival of Antonio Conte gifts yet another fresh start for the Tottenham ace but Brown believes he may have just clutched at his last N17 lifeline.

The Latest: Brown makes Alli claim…

Speaking to GMS, the reporter believes that Alli is in fact ‘out of time’ at Tottenham and under Conte – citing his style of play as a key factor.

“I can’t see a role for Dele Alli. He’s kind of a man out of time. He’s one of those players who made a living on brilliant late runs into the box, the timing of his arrival, he did score a lot of goals through that. But football has changed over the last few years.”

The Verdict: Bang on the money…

Once lauded as ‘one of the best in Europe’ by former Spurs fan favourite boss Mauricio Pochettino, Alli’s trajectory to the fringes of Tottenham’s senior squad has been somewhat surprising to watch.

Three years ago, the player was scoring for England in crucial World Cup knockout games but now finds himself at the centre of reports linking him with a Spurs departure.

Newcastle are said to be one of the teams interesting in taking Alli and we believe selling to them, or any interested suitor with the funds available, should certainly be considered by managing director Fabio Paratici at this point.

Tottenham had the chance to let him gain some experience playing with Ligue 1 superstars at Paris-Saint Germain but Daniel Levy refused to sanction the move last January.

If offered that same opportunity again, Spurs may have to weigh his exit as a genuine possibility unless he can perform a stunning U-turn and finally resurrect his Lilywhites career.

Ireland coach Phil Simmons has big ambitions for his team at the ICC World Twenty20 and will be disappointed if his side doesn’t make it through to the Super Eight stage of the tournament.Simmons wants the squad to repeat their success from the 2007 World Cup in West Indies when they reached the last eight after beating Pakistan in the qualifying section. Ireland also beat Bangladesh later in the tournament. The Ireland squad are preparing to leave for a training camp and their warm-up games ahead of their first match at the ICC World Twenty20 against Bangladesh, at Trent Bridge, on June 8. The players will travel in good spirits after demolishing Worcestershire for 58 in the Friends Provident Trophy last week.”The win against Worcestershire was exactly what we needed in our last competitive game before the Twenty20,” Simmons said. “It was also achieved without our top county players which says a lot for the depth of the squad. We will, of course, have everyone available and I’ll be very disappointed if we don’t make our mark.”Obviously our best chance lies in the game against Bangladesh but the beauty of Twenty20 cricket is its unpredictability. We will be going into the warm up games and the tournament in a confident mood.”Kyle McCallan, the vice-captain and one of the most experienced players, was also confident that Ireland will be there to more than just make up the numbers. “We’re relishing the opportunity to showcase Irish cricket on the world stage again,” he said. “The 2007 World Cup in the West Indies was a fabulous experience for all concerned, and I’m sure it’ll be the same again in England.”It’ll be a wonderful experience playing in front of sell out crowds, and I’m sure there will be plenty of Irish supporters adding to what I’m sure will be an incredible atmosphere.”I know just how much all the guys are looking forward to it, and if we play to our capabilities, we have a genuine chance of progression. We’re well prepared and have already played a lot of cricket this year. The conditions in England will be more familiar to our players than our opposition, so that’s obviously a big advantage to us.”Ireland will take on New Zealand in a Twenty20 game at Derby on May 27 before moving on to a training camp at Wormsley , where they will face a PCA Masters XI and West Indies in practice games. They will then face Netherlands and West Indies again in warm-up games at Lord’s and The Oval.Ireland will be at full strength apart from the loss of Eoin Morgan who has been selected in England’s World Twenty20 squad.

Ainda assim, o zagueiro acumulou histórias curiosos, principalmente diante do Vasco.

Celtic: Danny Mills drops Ryan Christie verdict

Danny Mills believes that finances may have been a factor in why Ryan Christie chose to leave Celtic for Bournemouth this summer.

The Lowdown: Ryan Christie was an important player for Celtic

The 26-year-old was an important player at Parkhead during his six years with the Hoops, registering 85 goal contributions in 151 games, with 41 goals and 44 assists to his name [Transfermarkt].

Six trophies later, the Scotland international has recently moved to Bournemouth on an undisclosed fee [BBC], a transfer perhaps made easier due to him being out of contract at Parkhead in January 2022 [GIVEMESPORT].

Former Manchester City defender Mills has now weighed in with his thoughts on why Christie moved south of the border.

The Latest: Danny Mills drops his verdict on Christie’s Bournemouth move

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Football Insider, the 44-year-old claimed:

“I’m guessing the finances are a lot greater at Bournemouth than they are at Celtic. It was a bizarre situation with his contract being up in January of all times.

“He’ll be delighted. Bournemouth with the parachute payments will still be decent payers.

“It’s a chance for him to get into the Premier League. Is he good enough for the Premier League? Possibly not.

“Now he’s got an opportunity with a decent club under a good young manager to get them back into the Premier League. Look at it in a year’s time and it could be a really good move for him.”

The Verdict: Celtic will hope to supplement Christie’s influence with like-minded alternatives

The unusual stipulations surrounding Christie’s contractual situation, which Mills rightly labelled “bizarre”, perhaps made any potential exit easier to complete.

Nevertheless, the signing of Benfica winger Filipe Jota will help to soften the blow of the Scot’s departure in the recently-concluded transfer window.

Christie enjoyed a productive 2020/21 campaign for the Celts, picking up six man of the match awards [WhoScored]. He also recorded an average of 2.7 shots per game (second highest after Odsonne Edouard), showing his unwillingness to relent from an attacking perspective.

Moving forward, Ange Postecoglou will be hoping to supplement Christie’s influence with like-minded alternatives within his squad at Parkhead.

In other news, a Celtic legend has dropped his verdict on a new signing. Find out more here.

They said what …

Reaction in the aftermath of the abandoned Sabina Park TestMichael Atherton: “It was clear before the game that the pitch was uneven and corrugated and it was only going to get worse. The umpires took the decision to call it off and I think it was the right decision. The pitch was dangerous. The safety of the players was paramount. The senior umpire was in constant touch with the match referee. I was called out and had a chat with Brian Lara, and the officials. Both captains said that conditions were unfit for Test cricket. I don’t want to get into worst pitches, but I repeat it was dangerous. That’s why the decision was taken.”Alec Stewart: “When you were batting there were balls doing more than they should have done. You knew you were going to take hits. It was just a case of when and how many.”Ian Botham: “The pitch is not worthy of international cricket. It’s a disgrace. Someone is going to get seriously hurt.”Wayne Morton (England physio): “There was a bit of war out there and you always fear for a batsman’s safety. You don’t often see too many apologies from West Indian fast bowlers but they seemed pretty embarrassed by it. It was a very busy morning, possibly the busiest I’ve ever known. You always fear for batsmen’s faces, particularly on a wicket behaving like it seemed to be doing this morning. There are medals for bravery to be taken, but at the end of the day we want to play on a level playing field. I’m not too keen on losing players with fractured digits or serious injuries every morning.”Brian Lara: “Cricket has to be played on a fair surface.”Michael Holding: “I’ve never seen a pitch as dangerous as that. The people responsible should be brought to task. This pitch isn’t fit for Test cricket or even club cricket for that matter. It’s completely substandard. Our fast bowlers don’t want to seriously injure anyone at all. It’s an embarrassment.”Barry Jarman (match referee): “Venkat got in touch with me and said, ‘What do you think?’ I said, ‘I think it’s horrific.’ I told him, ‘You do what you want to do and you’ll get support from me.’ I spoke to Mike and Brian and they said, ‘We both agree it’s too dangerous and someone’s going to get seriously hurt’. The pitch is just nowhere near up to standard.”

Hendrick parts company with Derbyshire

I wish him all the very best for the future.”

Ball: Harry Kane is much needed for Manchester City

Former professional footballer Michael Ball believes Harry Kane is much needed for Manchester City.

The Cityzens are interested in taking Harry Kane to the Etihad Stadium, with journalist Fabrizio Romano reporting last week that City will return with a €150m (£128m) bid and that the club are open to including players or add-ons, with Spurs still determined to keep hold of their star player.

City began their Premier League title defence with a defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur after a Son Heung-min goal got Spurs all three points.

Former Manchester City defender Michael Ball believes that City need Kane, telling Transfer Tavern: “He is much needed for Manchester City, not just for his goalscoring record, Manchester City are great at scoring goals, but just a different way of playing. They play a great style of football, they won the league last year with no number nine up front, but they failed in the Champions League.

“When they’re struggling and pushing for three points or a Champions League win, a different presence like Harry Kane who just needs that one or two opportunities to put the ball in the back of the net could make the difference and fingers crossed it can.”

Kane’s goalscoring record is phenomenal throughout his career, as he has scored 248 goals in all competitions, with 221 of those goals coming in a Tottenham shirt!

With just a week to go until the transfer window closes, will Manchester City be able to agree a deal with Tottenham Hotspur for Harry Kane or will Spurs remain strong in their stance that they want to keep hold of their star player and Kane remains at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium beyond the August 31 deadline?
