Liverpool fans react with sympathy to Emre Can’s Champions League squad exclusion

[ad_pod ]Juventus have announced their squad for the group stages of the Champions League and the exclusion of a familiar face has saddened some Liverpool fans.Emre Can is the man to miss out, and there is some sympathy for him from the Anfield faithful despite the German international moving to Turin after rejecting a new contract with the Reds.A natural reaction could be to make fun out of the midfielder, but fans are choosing not to be vindictive and instead feel sorry for Can, who had clearly looked to join the Italian champions to further his career and opportunities in such competitions. The Old Lady have failed to balance their squad efficiently over summer, and have now been left with seven first-team centre-midfielders – including Can – which could be the reason behind why he has had to miss out. Some fans have used the opportunity to show their appreciation for the player, acknowledging the fact that he may have been poorly advised in his decision to leave. Here are some of their responses to the news on Twitter.

Tottenham could receive £15m for outgoing Josh Onomah

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Tottenham Hotspur are set to receive £15m as they look to sell Josh Onomah in the summer transfer window, per Football Insider.

What’s the word?

Spurs are currently in talks with Huddersfield Town over a deal that will finally see Onomah leave the club.

He has been under contract with the north London club since 2015 but he has played a mere 92 minutes of Premier League football in that time.

Nevertheless, the Terriers, who have sold Philip Billing to AFC Bournemouth, are interested in bringing him in.

The club, the report states, received £15m for Billing and could reinvest that money into the ex-England Under-21 international.

Huddersfield face competition, though, with clubs in England and from abroad enquiring about the 22-year-old.

A massive boon for Levy

This would be fantastic business by Spurs.

Of course, transfer fees have ballooned in recent years and it is remarkably difficult to actually place a value on players.

One imagines, however, that Onomah should not be worth £15m.

He has spent the last two seasons at Aston Villa and Sheffield Wednesday respectively and he is, by all accounts, a fine Championship player.

Indeed, he made 37 appearances for Villa and 15 for Wednesday and is well-versed in the rigours of the second-tier.

He would probably be a very good signing for Huddersfield but receiving a £15m fee for a player who is nothing more than a Tottenham reserve would be a major boost for chairman Daniel Levy.

Indeed, the Spurs powerbroker has been linked with a number of moves before the transfer deadline, with the likes of Giovani Lo Celso, Ryan Sessegnon and Paulo Dybala all reportedly targets.

Adding £15m to the kitty will surely help those negotiations.

Arsenal’s signing of Nicolas Pepe could serve as bad news for Mesut Ozil

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal are a club who seemingly have no boundaries when it comes to launching a surprise, particularly with big-name signings.

The arrival of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in January 2018 will likely have sent a shudder through the Premier League.

This was one of the world’s top strikers, a man who had a habit of scoring over 20 times per season, joining a club languishing in the Europa League.

Yet, here Arsenal stand once again, having landing one of Europe’s hottest talents.

Last weekend, news emerged that the Gunners had agreed a colossal deal to sign the 23-goal Nicolas Pepe from Lille, and the deal was eventually confirmed this week.

This is a player who was described as having the capabilities to play for Barcelona or Real Madrid by former teammate Jose Fonte, which gives a glowing indication of the talent he possesses.

Last season, the Ivorian was involved in 34 goals in all competitions, whilst completing 2.7 dribbles per match according to WhoScored.

Yet, it goes without saying that the Gunners may actually somehow be the victors of failing to land Wilfried Zaha, a man who scored 13 fewer goals than the player Arsenal are now capturing.

It’s quite the turn of events for Unai Emery’s team who have landed him for a fee of £72m due to be paid in instalments.

However, despite all the hype surrounding the winger, it could prove detrimental to one of the club’s leading lights.

Mesut Ozil causes debate amongst the Arsenal fanbase and continued to do so in pre-season despite his improved performances.

The German has looked as though he’s had renewed work rate about his game but that may not stop Emery from ditching him once more during the upcoming season.

After all, the attacking midfielder is someone who rarely commanded the support of his manager in 2018/19.

Following a defeat against West Ham, a match Ozil was left out of entirely despite being fit, the Spaniard said: “He’s working this week normally. Like I said we win with him and lose with him. Today the decision is to come with these players.”

It was hardly a heartfelt message to Ozil from Emery who had already been left on the bench at the Vitality Stadium when Arsenal struggled against Bournemouth earlier in the season.

Whether they get on is seemingly an ongoing saga but despite remaining one of the manager’s five captains and working his way back into the team, his place is still far from certain.

If Pepe arrives, then he could well find himself on the bench again.

This is based upon the way Emery preferred to line up during his first year in charge of Arsenal. Against teams like Huddersfield at home, he opted for a three-man midfield which was composed of Matteo Guendouzi, Lucas Torreira and Granit Xhaka.

It feels likely the latter two names will be starters again but with Dani Ceballos also arriving, he could take the place of Guendouzi and give the Gunners more flair in the middle of the park – which in itself negates the need for Ozil.

In pre-season, Aubameyang has been utilised on the wings and it would be difficult to comprehend if Emery dropped either him or Alexandre Lacazette to accommodate Pepe.

Last season, Emery chose to go with a 4-2-3-1 formation in some games whilst he also utilised a 3-4-2-1 with Ozil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan playing as inside forwards and the wing-backs providing the width.

The former Germany international only played as a natural ten on the odd occasion when Lacazette and Aubameyang were partnered together as a duo in attack though, and in total he made just 15 Premier League starts as a central attacking midfielder.

Of course, the former PSG boss could revert back to 4-2-3-1 to accommodate Arsenal’s World Cup winner.

But both Ceballos and Mkhitaryan can play in that offensive midfield role whilst Alex Iwobi has often looked threatening through the middle.

With that in mind, Ozil’s place isn’t even guaranteed in this formation – and Emery isn’t guaranteed to use it either. 4-2-3-1 was used frequently during the start of the Spaniard’s reign but became increasingly secondary throughout the campaign. He barely utilised it at PSG, preferring a 4-3-3.

If you consider the bigger picture, it would feel rather strange if the Islington club smashed their transfer record to then not play him, so someone must make way. And with essentially three forwards on the pitch, having Ozil just behind them reduces Arsenal’s defensive resilience considerably.

A quick winger is arguably something Ozil has been crying out for throughout his time at Arsenal. He’s lacked someone he can unleash in attacking scenarios but Pepe’s arrival could actually leave him feeling rather bittersweet.

It would be harsh to suggest this is the beginning of the end for Arsenal’s number ten, but it may give Emery an even bigger reason to not start him.

Aston Villa would put Hourihane in danger by signing Luiz

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to The Telegraph, Aston Villa are closing in on the signing of Manchester City’s Douglas Luiz.

What’s the word?

Aston Villa have made some significant moves in the transfer window already, adding Wesley and Tyrone Mings to their ranks for combined fees of £42m.

They’ve shown no signs of lacking funds in the market after bringing in no fewer than seven new bodies.

Following the release of eight players plus Ross McCormack, it appears the Villans are doing their best to add plenty of squad depth.

And their latest arrival could be Douglas, per The Telegraph.

They claim that they are close to signing the Brazilian for a fee of £15m. The report understands that City have also included a buyback clause in the deal.

The midfielder previously had work permit issues meaning he had to move to Spain to play for Girona on loan, yet that will apparently cause no problems in Villa’s pursuit.

Hourihane should feel threatened

Dean Smith’s midfield was easily one of the best in the Championship last season with Jack Grealish, John McGinn and Conor Hourihane all hitting double figures in terms of goal involvements.

Grealish and McGinn were the real stars of the Villa side, though, and as a result, are unlikely to be dislodged going into the new campaign.

However, Villa have been in the market for a defensive midfielder, targeting the likes of Kalvin Phillips, Marvelous Nakamba, Baptiste Santamaria and now Douglas.

With that in mind, Hourihane’s place in the team would be in considerable danger, particularly if the Brazil youth international arrived.

The 21-year-old enjoyed a productive term in La Liga throughout 2018/19, featuring as a central midfielder, as well as playing in a holding role, two positions the Irishman also played in.

As such, there is a case to be made that their potential new £15m arrival would dislodge him.

In terms of the number of tackles per game each player made, they were extremely similar. Douglas ended the campaign with 1.5 per outing whilst Hourihane’s stood at 1.4.

The latter was involved in more goals than the City man who contributed none for Girona. But that shouldn’t come as a negative.

In the Premier League, Villa are likely to need a more disciplined player who is prepared to sit in rather than rampage forward.

Douglas, therefore, could be their answer.

West Ham’s Coventry could be their next midfield hope

[ad_pod ]

Conor Coventry could be the latest West Ham United academy graduate, perhaps destined to follow in the footsteps of Declan Rice.

The Republic of Ireland youth international is just 19 but it already showing all of the signs that he could make a first-team breakthrough sooner rather than later.

He is currently the captain of the club’s Under-23 team, having made 36 appearances for them, and has been capped at Under-17, Under-18, Under-19 and Under-21 level by his country.

Coventry has already made his senior debut for the club, playing in the 8-0 EFL Cup thumping of Macclesfield Town in 2018.

Pellegrini clearly trusts him and has given him a taste of life in the first-team, as he has been on the bench a total of four times in the Premier League.

An excellent defensive midfielder with the ability to move the ball well, while also boasting the stamina to go box-to-box, his talent has long been evident.

He made his debut in the Premier League Division 2 in 2015/16, when he was just 15.

Coventry is currently with Ireland’s U21 team in the Toulon Tournament and has helped them qualify for the semi-finals, coming on as a substitute in the recent 1-0 win over Bahrain.

There is perhaps a gap opening up too. West Ham only have Rice, Carlos Sanchez and Pedro Obiang to call upon in defensive midfield and bringing Coventry through makes sense. Rice, who Coventry will hope to emulate, is the only Premier League quality player in that trio.

He’s still a teenager, of course, and there is the likelihood that he could potentially be sent out on loan.

But promoting him to the first-team, where he can learn from Rice, now an England international, and Mark Noble, a fantastic servant to the club who is hero-worshipped by the fans, will give him the required ingredients to grow and improve as a player.

He is far from the finished article, of course, but his talents are there for all at the Irons to see.

If he is exposed to the first-team, he will be in the starting XI soon enough.

Everton eyeing £25m Bertrand Traore swoop

[ad_pod ]

Everton are reportedly set to pursue Bertrand Traore, but the Lyon winger has got Theo Walcott 2.0 written all over him.

What’s the story?

Well, according to Football Insider, director of football Marcel Brands wants to sign Traore once the Toffees have signed Andre Gomes.

The outlet reported last week that the club is close to wrapping up a deal for Gomes, and claim Brands will then turn his attentions to Traore.

According to Monday’s report, Brands is plotting a £25m bid. The youngster is valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt.

Don’t do it Marcel!

A 23 year-old winger capable of playing as a striker, Traore scored 11 goals and added five assists in all competitions last season.

The Burkina Faso international possesses devastating pace and fantastic one-on-one dribbling ability, completing 1.5 dribbles per game in Ligue 1.

However, he is also dispossessed 1.1 times per game and takes 1.9 unsuccessful touches per game. To put that in perspective, Romelu Lukaku averaged 1.6 unsuccessful touches per game in the Premier League last season.

Traore also struggles for end product in higher level games, producing consistently for both Ajax and Lyon in domestic competitions but struggling in Europe with just nine goals in 34 matches.

So, a ridiculously fast young winger who doesn’t really know his best position, is clumsy on the ball and wasteful on the big stage, remind you of anyone?

The last thing Everton need is another big-money attacking signing that struggles to make any impact, and Traore has got Walcott written all over him. Steer clear of this one Marcel.

Arsenal fans react to Krystian Bielik’s brilliant Play-Off display

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal fans have praised Krystian Bielik’s starring performance in the League 1 Play-Off final at Wembley after his man of the match performance helped Lee Bowyer’s Charlton secure promotion to the Championship.

Bielik was signed by Arsenal in January 2015 and was expected to develop into one of the finest youngsters in the world. The opportunities haven’t come for the Pole though, and he’s had to go on loan to various clubs such as Birmingham and Walsall to get the game time he needs.

It’s at Charlton where he’s developed the most, with Bowyer deploying him in the centre-back role despite him spending most of his early career playing as a dynamic, defensive midfielder.

The final chapter of his season came in the play-offs in which his man of the match display helped Charlton claim a spectacular last-minute winner against fellow promotion hopefuls Sunderland.

Arsenal have struggled defensively all season, and the 6ft 3 colossus could be seen as the perfect replacement for some of the more ageing players like Laurent Koscielny, or even those who have struggled to find their best form like Shkodran Mustafi.

The Polish youngster’s performance has got fans very excited about the prospect of the defender returning to the club next season, and Arsenal fans took to Twitter to call for Charlton’s Play-Off star to be given a chance…

Diogo Jota would be an outstanding capture for Tottenham

Tottenham fans know full-well their side needs a number of new faces this summer, if they finally want to get their hands on some silverware. Yes, we’ve been saying that for years, but the recent run in the Champions League only serves as a reminder as to how high up the footballing ladder Spurs are these days.

Indeed, whilst their place in the top four looks to be fairly secure – despite their best efforts to make sure they mess it up – the hope is that now Spurs can kick-on and make the necessary improvements, which allows them to become title-challengers.

That, of course, is a serious ambition that must be treated with respect. Therefore, a big budget needs to be made available, so that Mauricio Pochettino is able to bring in the players he wants. Promisingly, the Sun reported at the start of the month that such a budget would be made available.

Football, nowadays, is all about the money and the right signings will take you far as a team.

Having played a blinder during his first campaign in the Premier League, Wolves forward Diogo Jota is a player of interest (as per the Express last week) for Tottenham this summer, which could be great for club and player.

Jota, (who is valued at £16.2 million on Transfermarkt) has enjoyed great success ever since moving to Wolves from Atletico Madrid in 2018. The hard-working forward has provided ten goals and seven assists in all competitions, as he often makes the difference for Wolves.

The 22-year-old can play on the wing, as a supporting striker or even as the main man up-front, dependant on where Pochettino wants him. To be fair, he looks beyond perfect for Spurs. That profile of a player fits the Tottenham mould and the fact he has Premier League experience makes it all the better.

Whatever the role or position, Diogo Jota would be an improvement to Tottenham’s overall squad, giving them a lot more quality in the final third with the possibility of him linking up with Heung-Min Son, Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane.

Tottenham fans horrified by Winks injury update

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur fans have been left horrified by an official club update, confirming that midfielder Harry Winks has undergone groin surgery.

Winks has emerged as a crucial player under Mauricio Pochettino in recent seasons and has made 40 appearances in all competitions this season.

He has been sidelined since the 1-0 Champions League quarter-final first leg win over Manchester City though.

Winks has subsequently missed Premier League encounters with Huddersfield Town, City, Brighton & Hove Albion and West Ham United, as well as the second leg against Pep Guardiola’s men.

It has now been confirmed that he has gone under the knife and he will surely miss both legs of the European semi-final against Ajax, and is also likely to be absent from the Premier League encounters with AFC Bournemouth and Everton.

And Spurs fans have been left devastated by the news, with Winks rapidly becoming a fan favourite in north London.

Take a look at the best of the reaction below!

Arsenal: Signing Ajax’s Hakim Ziyech would prove Gunners’ title credientials

There’s nothing better than beating one of your rivals to a signing. With that in mind, if Arsenal can bat off the competition to capture Hakim Ziyech it’d send a huge statement to the rest of the top six.

The 26-year-old right winger is another rising star Ajax have thrown into the limelight this season and the Mirror claimed in late April that the Gunners, Man City, Man United and Liverpool are all interested in signing him up. Indeed, Arsenal should put all their weight behind this guy and forget Dennis Praet.

Unai Emery’s side are also believed to be after Praet according to the Daily Star, but he’s miles behind Ziyech considering he’s still playing for Sampdoria rather than one of Europe’s top clubs. He may be younger, but Arsenal need success now.

Ziyech has shone in the Eredivisie this season, scoring 16 goals and making 15 assists. He’s even scored two and assisted three this Champions League campaign, so he can certainly perform in more competitive matches too. What’s there not to like about that?

He’d be a huge upgrade on their attacking players already, and that includes outgoing Aaron Ramsey. If they sign him he’ll make Arsenal’s attack unbearable to defend against because they’ve got such depth up there. It’ll have a phycological impact on their rivals too.

If Arsenal can beat their main rivals to his signature, it shows they’re ready to battle for the title with the likes of Liverpool and City. They have some way to go, but if they can pull this off, they can make it all the way.
