Strauss warns Flintoff over discipline

England captain Andrew Strauss has issued a stern warning to Andrew Flintoff after the allrounder was disciplined for missing the team bus during a trip to the World War I trenches in Ypres. Strauss said he would be strong enough to drop Flintoff from England’s Ashes team.”Fred is always under pressure when he comes back and I feel for him in that respect,” Strauss said. “He’s obviously a big player for us and there’s this circus that goes on around him. He was very aware he had stuffed up, he took it on the chin and apologised to everyone concerned. It was a very sincere apology and we move on.””It is up to Fred what he does but I have no reason to suspect that is going to be an issue. He has been out of the side a long while and wants to do well in the Ashes. To me those are all good signs.”The trip to Belgium was organised as part of coach Andy Flower’s objective to broaden their horizons and learn more about leadership and team ethics. Flintoff was back with England for the first time last Friday after spending weeks recovering from knee surgery.Like the other 15 team members he visited Tyne Cot cemetery on Friday but missed the Saturday morning visit to the fields where the Battle of Passchendaele was fought. Flintoff reportedly had failed to meet the 8:10 am departure from the hotel in Flanders after the squad dinner the night before, even as he had been “working very hard” to avoid issues fuelled by drink.Asked about Flintoff’s relationship with alcohol, Strauss said: “I don’t know; that is something for him to answer. I think it is something he has been working very hard on and he generally recognises when is the time to drink and not to drink.”It is important career-wise he stays on the right side of that and the vast majority of the time I think he has done. As he has got older, I think he has become increasingly aware when is the right and wrong time to drink.”Strauss said that dropping Flintoff on disciplinary grounds would be no more or less an option than with any other player. “I am absolutely certain it is not going to come to that,” he said. “You give guys responsibility to act the way they know they have to act to play good cricket. It is vital to a team functioning properly that everyone is treated the same and we will do that.”Strauss also revealed yesterday that Flintoff is not the only player to have been punished for poor timekeeping. “Punctuality has been an issue recently with a few players and is something we are trying to iron out and we are taking steps to make sure it doesn’t happen again,” he said.Hugh Morris, the managing director of England cricket, said Flintoff’s problem was an “alarm-clock issue” and that the player took a “full part” in the team meeting. “This is about Andrew missing the bus on Saturday morning. The matter was dealt with,” Morris said.

Lorgat impressed by young Afghans

The ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat has lauded the progress shown by Afghanistan, whose senior side recently qualified for one-day international status, and whose juniors this week reached the final of the Asian Cricket Council Elite Cup, a precursor to the Under-19 World Cup qualifiers later this year.Afghanistan Under-19s were beaten in the final by Hong Kong, but Lorgat was impressed with what he saw.”It was a good tournament and very impressive to see such young talent on display from all 10 teams taking part,” he said. “We have all been impressed by the Afghanistan team, which progressed from Division 5 of the World Cricket League to coming fifth at the World Cup Qualifiers in less than a year. It is particularly heartening to see the next generation of Afghan cricketers performing so well. By beating defending champion Nepal in the semi-final, I think the players have really come of age and we can expect big things from them in the future.”In the final, before an enthusiastic crowd of 3000, Afghanistan reached 215 for 9 with Asgher Hotak (70) and Murad Ali (68) impressing. In reply, however, Hong Kong romped home with three overs to spare thanks to 94 from James Atkinson.”There was a great atmosphere for the final with so many Afghans in the crowd to support their team,” Lorgat said. “Events like this don’t happen without considerable planning and hard work from so many volunteers. It shows to me the marvellous spirit of cricket when people give up their free time and devote it to the game in this way.”I would like to congratulate Hong Kong on this victory and I wish them and Afghanistan the best of luck in the Under-19 World Cup Qualifiers later this year. If the Under-19s from Afghanistan show the same willingness to learn as their senior counterparts, they will be a very useful side by then.”

West Ham linked to Alexis Sanchez

West Ham United could secure their next Carlos Tevez over the coming months after being linked with a move for Inter forward Alexis Sanchez.

What’s the story?

According to Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb (as relayed by SportWitness), the Hammers are eager to bring the 32-year-old back to English shores, although they’re set to face competition from Marseille and interest from Spain.

The report states that: “The Chilean striker is playing little and the idea of a goodbye also in January is taking shape. Marseille and West Ham have tested the waters, but in the end, some opportunities could also arise in Spain.”

Sanchez’s current contract at San Siro doesn’t expire until the summer of 2023, but the reigning Serie A champions are eager to get the versatile attacker off their books due to his high wages.

West Ham’s next Carlos Tevez

West Ham’s history is littered with top-class stars who have either fired their club or country to glory throughout their career while entertaining the masses in the process.

However, the last South American do to so in a claret and blue shirt was arguably Carlos Tevez during the 2006/07 season.

After a tricky start to life in the English top-flight, the Argentine bagged an incredible seven goals and provided a further four assists in the east London outfit’s final ten league games of the campaign, firing Alan Curbishley’s charges to safety in dramatic fashion.

The likes of Felipe Andersen, Manuel Lanzini and Enner Valencia have attempted to replicate Tevez’s influence since, although none have come close to making as big an impact as the stocky forward.

That could be about to change following speculation regarding Sanchez’s potential imminent arrival at the London Stadium, though.

During his three-and-a-half-year stay at Arsenal, the £130k-per-week Chile international bagged 80 goals and provided 45 assists in 166 appearances for the Gunners, winning the FA Cup twice along the way.

His outstanding performances at the Emirates Stadium caught the eye of several impressed onlookers, including Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.

“He is a player that can play in several positions: left, right, central. He is a fighter with character and spirit, and he is a winner,” said Guardiola back in 2016. “He is a class, class player, but now I think he is playing really well. With Chile he has won two South American cups, that shows what a good player he is.”

Things have not quite worked out for Sanchez since leaving north London, though. Spells at Manchester United and Inter have failed to bring out the best in the £6.75m-rated beast, but West Ham manager David Moyes could be the ideal man to revive his career.

The Scotsman has already brought out the best of ageing players such as Craig Dawson and Michail Antonio, and therefore, GSB must back their manager to do the same with a potential superstar in the shape of Sanchez.

Fabinho let Liverpool down against Manchester City

Liverpool managed to keep their Premier League unbeaten streak intact following their 2-2 draw against reigning champions Manchester City over the weekend.

Goals from Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah were cancelled out thanks to goals from Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne, resulting in the Reds dropping the lead twice and two points in the process in their latest league match ahead of the international break.

One player, in particular, that stood out for Liverpool on the day, but for all the wrong reasons, in our view, was Fabinho who played the full 90 minutes of the match in midfield alongside Curtis Jones and club captain Jordan Henderson.

From a defensive point of view, the Brazilian won just 25% of his ground duels (two out of eight), only made one tackle, lost possession on six occasions and was dribbled past five times. That ultimately earned himself a rather disappointing overall match rating of 5.9/10, the lowest rating of any Liverpool player on the day according to SofaScore.

What didn’t help was a glaring miss towards the end of the match too. With the goal at his mercy, the holding player had a chance to find the net but was tackled spectacularly well by Rodri.

Since joining the Merseyside club back in the 2018 summer transfer window from French club AS Monaco for a fee of £40.5m, the 27-year-old has been a reliable figure, however.

Currently earning a weekly wage of £180k-per-week according to Spotrac, he’s made a total of 130 appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side across all competitions. During that time he has managed to score four goals and provide eight assists along the way.

So far this season, Fabinho has made eight appearances for the Reds in all tournaments, scoring one goal and providing one assist in the process.

Despite his poor showing against Pep Guardiola’s side, we feel as if Klopp should continue selecting Fabinho in his starting XI for the remainder of the season wherever possible and just hope his underwhelming display against City was just a bad day at the office.

However, with Fabinho currently being the only Liverpool player that predominantly plays in the defensive-midfield position, we feel as though his place in the team would be safe enough anyway.

Ebsary and Poulton level series for Australia

Australia levelled the Rose Bowl Series after four matches when their third-highest total in history ensured a satisfying 44-run victory in Hamilton. Lauren Ebsary, Leah Poulton and Shelley Nitschke fired with half-centuries in Australia’s 307 for 4 before the hosts lost too many wickets to mount a serious challenge. The final match is in Wellington on Thursday and Australia, who came back from a 2-0 deficit, will enter the contest with renewed confidence following their outstanding form over the past two games. “Scoring 300 is something that we’ve been working towards as a team since the India series late last year,” the captain Karen Rolton said. “We made some good scores in that series, but it’s been fantastic to build on that and reach that goal. We’ve got to make sure now that we keep this form going on Thursday.”Nitschke, who cruised to 58, and Poulton combined for an opening stand of 121 at almost a run a ball to lay the platform for a huge total. Poulton hit 11 fours and departed with 81 off 97 while Ebsary almost stayed till the end in bringing up an aggressive 86 from 76. Beth McNeill was the only multiple wicket-taker with 2 for 52 after picking up Ebsary and Alex Blackwell (37).Amy Satterthwaite top scored for New Zealand with 67 and there were useful contributions from Nicola Browne (45) and Sara Tsukigawa (45), but the task was too heavy and they finished at 263. The 570 runs scored were the most in any of the previous 679 one-day internationals. Emma Sampson finished off the match two overs early and collected 3 for 34 while Lisa Sthalekar gained two important breakthroughs to disrupt the chase.

Aston Villa: Fans react to Matty Cash update

Fabrizio Romano claimed on Saturday that Poland are ready to approach Aston Villa’s Matty Cash over a possible switch of nationalities.

And a number of Villa supporters have been giving their thoughts to the update on social media.

Cash, who qualifies for Poland through family on his mother’s side, had been reluctant to turn away from England as he has hopes of turning out for England.

The 24-year-old hasn’t featured for The Three Lions at any level, with the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kyle Walker, Reece James and Kieran Trippier all seemingly ahead of him in Gareth Southgate’s right-back ranks.

According to Romano, Cash is ‘open’ to the opportunity of playing for Poland and is waiting for a passport to go through.

Villa fans react

Romano posted the news regarding Cash on Twitter on Saturday afternoon, hours before he netted his first Villa goal in a 3-0 win over Everton.

This is what some Villa fans had to say in reply, with one labelling it as ‘interesting’.

“I think he should accept it. I don’t see there is much of a chance he would get into the England squad as there are approximately 4178.9 RB that’s capable to be in the England squad right now.”

Fred may not play for Man Utd v Newcastle

Many Manchester United fans have been left buzzing as some early team news has emerged ahead of their Premier League meeting with Newcastle this weekend.

Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match at home to the Magpies on Saturday afternoon, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has now said that they are preparing for the clash without the central midfield player.

This is because the Brazil FA have triggered a FIFA rule, meaning that they can ban players for five days if teams do not release them for international duty, and Fred would miss out as a result.

However, this may not necessarily be a bad thing for the Red Devils, given his poor display in the 1-0 away win at Wolves last time out, which was heavily criticised by supporters.

These Man Utd fans buzzed as the news on Fred was shared on Twitter, with one even going as far as to claim that it is ‘boss’:

Bryce Hosannah set to leave Leeds

Leeds United youngster Bryce Hosannah is set to join National League side Wrexham on Deadline Day, according to Football Insider’s sources at Thorp Arch.

The Lowdown: Hosannah unwanted at Leeds

The 22-year-old is yet to make a single first-team appearance for the Whites, appearing three times for the Under-23s.

Marcelo Bielsa clearly doesn’t seem the youngster as a part of his plans moving forward, and he is open to look for a new club before the summer transfer window closes.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359346″]

The Latest: Youngster to join Wrexham

According to Football Insider’s Whites source, Hosannah has agreed to join Wrexham on a permanent two-year deal, with the Welsh club now co-owned by Hollywood acting pair Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

The right-back’s current Leeds deal expires next summer, so it makes perfect sense to receive a fee for him now, rather than losing him for free in a year’s time.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-15/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Good luck to him

It is important that any young player enjoys plenty of playing time, in order not to stunt their growth, so this should be a good move for Hosannah.

A two-year contract will give him a great chance to prove his worth in a far lower league – it may be that that ends up being his ceiling as a footballer. If it doesn’t, we could well see him climbing back up the ranks, and Leeds may be wise to insert a sell-on clause into any potential deal.

In other news, one Leeds player is reportedly able to leave the club on deadline day. Read more here.

Jovic could take West Ham to next level

West Ham United are keen on signing Luka Jovic this month…

What’s the word?

According to Eurosport, the Irons are considering turning their attention to the Real Madrid striker, who is said to be a long-term target.

It’s claimed that Jovic is not in Carlo Ancelotti’s plans for the new season, so the La Liga giants are prepared to let him leave before the transfer deadline on August 31st.

David Moyes and co have struggled to find a new forward and are desperate to find competition for the injury-prone Michail Antonio.

However, the Hammers face competition for the 23-year-old from at least three Bundesliga sides. It remains to be seen just how much Jovic will command, with both Transfermarkt and CIES Football Observatory valuing him at £18m.

 A statement signing

Whilst the 6-foot Serbian has struggled to make much of an impact at the Bernabeu since a €60m (£50m) move in the summer of 2019, even returning to his former club Frankfurt for a loan spell last season, he would still be quite the coup for the East Londoners.

During the 2018/19 season, Jovic bagged a whopping 27 goals in 48 appearances in all competitions, via Transfermarkt, also striking up quite the partnership with Sebastien Haller, whose own exploits saw him make the switch to the London Stadium.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-west-ham-news-transfer-rumours-the-latest-gossip-and-much-more-3” title= “Read the latest West Ham news, transfer rumours, gossip and much more!”]

His form, particularly that year, earned glowing acclaim from teammate Filip Kostic, who described the talisman as “just unbelievable” to Bundesliga.com.

Furthermore, Jovic has been likened to Radamel Falcao, largely due to his ability to use either foot, as well as his head, to find the net. It’s perhaps why another former teammate, Kevin-Prince Boateng dubbed him a complete striker.

“He has everything to become [a world-class striker]. You see that in training. He has football in his genes, he’s a street footballer, and he has a nose for goal,” Boateng said. “He scores with his head, right or left foot. He is technically good and can shoot well with both feet. He just has everything a striker needs.”

Also lauded as “fast, robust and technically savvy” by Haller, it’s easy to see why Madrid splashed the cash on the 14-cap Serbia international and you could forgive him for not living up to the expectations and pressure that comes with playing for Los Galacticos.

Hammers boss Moyes should absolutely consider a move for Jovic before the end of the month. Given his impressive goalscoring record and experience across Europe, he could be exactly the sort of signing that takes the club.

The self-proclaimed “fox in the box” is well worth a late punt to solve the Scot’s striker nightmare.

AND in other news, Imagine him and Antonio: West Ham must seal move for “special” £31.5m-rated goal machine…
