'I'm happy to bat anywhere' – Watson

Shane Watson has said he is happy for his role in the team to evolve and concedes he has not scored enough runs at the top of the order on this tour to lock himself into a permanent opening position

Shane Watson has said he is happy for his role in the team to evolve and concedes he has not scored enough runs at the top of the order on this tour to lock himself into a permanent opening position. Watson started this Ashes series as an opening batsman who bowled a bit but as Geoffrey Boycott has noted, he might finish it as an opening bowler who bats a bit.Watson’s role changed in the second innings at Old Trafford, where he was demoted to No.4 as the Australians promoted David Warner in a bid for quick runs and stacked their middle order with right-handers in an effort to attack Graeme Swann. It is an order they may well use again in the fourth Test at Chester-le-Street and it could mean Watson’s days as a Test opener are numbered. On this trip, Watson has scored 13, 46, 30, 20 and 19 opening and, in every partnership with Chris Rogers, it has been Watson who has fallen first. He has worked on his propensity to be out lbw to the ball moving in, attempting to balance himself better as the ball is being delivered and have a smaller stride, but at Old Trafford it was an outside edge that ended his stay in the first innings and Watson knows he has not delivered as an opener.”From my personal perspective, it’s been a really disappointing three Test matches so far,” Watson said. “To be able to get the starts and get the things going and then not be able to capitalise on that has been extremely annoying. I’ve been working hard on one thing in particular where the ball is seaming back to try and give myself the best chance of being able to get through a ball like that.”It’s probably been the first time really in my career that I feel like I’m actually batting well, but I’m not getting the results that I know I can get. Of course it’s been extremely frustrating, especially batting with Chris, I’ve felt like we’ve been able to get a really good bond together opening the batting. But I haven’t been out there long enough to be able to build a really big partnership together with him.”I certainly do love opening the batting in all forms of the game. But even in the second innings I absolutely do understand the thought process behind it [moving down to No.4]. I also haven’t scored the runs as an opener as well in these three Test matches to be able to continue to feel like I’m doing a competent job at the top of the order. In the end, I’m happy to bat anywhere, I’m happy to play anywhere to be part of an Australian team that is certainly moving forward.”It is now 12 innings since Watson has made a Test half-century, the most recent one coming against Sri Lanka at the MCG in last year’s Boxing Day Test. But his bowling workload has increased and he has sent down 61 overs during the series, even sharing the new ball during the second innings at Lord’s. He has dried up England’s runs effectively and Watson said he was happy with his extra bowling load.”To be able to take the new ball in the second innings at Lord’s and come on pretty early, my role is probably changing a little bit,” he said. “But any way I can try and evolve and try and contribute to the team is the most important thing for me. I am trying to take wickets by being patient but also trying to work the batsman over. One of the outcomes is to keep it really tight.”I’m not sure that opening the batting and bowling 20 overs in a day would be possible. If that was what the team wanted me to do I would do it to the best of my ability. The way my body is continuing to go and the way I am bowling at the moment I feel that is not too far away. Michael [Clarke] has been looking after me in the three Tests by not bowling me at certain times when we are about to go in to bat again. The way he has been looking after me has been excellent.”Watson said that Michael Clarke, Australia’s captain, had been handling his bowling workload well•Getty Images

It has not only been a difficult tour for Watson on the field with the bat; the revelations in Mickey Arthur’s legal documents that Michael Clarke had called Watson “a cancer” on the team and that there was “major tension” between the two men emerged at an awkward time as the battle for the urn heated up. Watson made no denials and said that there had been times when things became difficult off the field, but that Darren Lehmann’s appointment as coach had helped.”It didn’t particularly worry me too much,” Watson said of the leaking of Arthur’s documents. “It’s something that’s happened in the past … things that were in and around the team through that period of time of about a year certainly weren’t that great but as I said this is an exciting time for me in my cricket career to be able to have Darren Lehmann doing an amazing job of bringing everyone together.”For me this is the most enjoyable time I’ve had within the Australian team for a long, long time, so those things … if things hadn’t evolved the way they had within the team then it probably would have affected me more but how excited I am about being involved in the Australian cricket team at this point in time that’s all in the past and we’re all moving forward.”Watson said the tour of India this year, which included his suspension for one Test over the homework saga, was a low point of his career and he had contemplated his future. However, he said with Lehmann in charge he was no longer thinking in such a way.”How he coaches is how he played the game, to make sure you really enjoy the game,” Watson said of Lehmann. “He played with freedom. I always admired the way Darren did play the game. He got the most out of his talent and was always extremely exciting to watch. He always made the game go forward the way he played. That’s how he saw the game and that’s how he is as a coach and that’s how I am as well I suppose.”That’s the cricket environment I got brought up with when I first started around the Australian squad. It drifted a little bit for a period of time but we’ve certainly got that back again now that Darren has taken over. People feel like they’re instilled with a lot more freedom to be able to go out there and express themselves and have fun doing it.”

Crook steals lead after Peters ton

ScorecardStephen Peters registered Northamptonshire’s first hundred of the season•Getty Images

Northamptonshire may not be Division Two leaders straight out of left-field, to slip into baseball parlance, but their hot streak has caught plenty by surprise. A century from their captain, Stephen Peters, and a by-now-familiar flick of the tail helped them to a slim advantage at the halfway point of a keenly contested match against Kent, as they pursue a third win out of four that would only fuel promotion talk on the bleachers.Northants have been here before and, having missed out by a single point in 2009 and 2011, they might be forgiven for fearing what Yogi Berra, the marvellously muddled former Major League catcher, once called “déjà vu all over again”. David Ripley, who succeeded David Capel as coach last year, was involved with the club on those previous occasions but said “choking” was not a problem he is worried about this time around.”Promotion is a target we think is achievable, especially with the start we’ve made,” he said. “The belief is there that we can do it. I’m confident we can. It’s partly a relief to come out and play well, when you’ve put the work in. Having got those wins in the bank, got ourselves at the top of the table, that’s great – we didn’t envisage being where we are but we’ll take it because we’ve played well.”Ironically, Northamptonshire’s preparations for the season focused on improving a disappointing recent record in one-day cricket – an area in which Ripley felt they “had the most to gain” – and one of the signings who has done so much to help them top the table, Steven Crook, was brought in with that aim in mind. Here, Crook hit 63, his third half-century in four innings since returning from Middlesex, to go with three wickets on the first day, as Northamptonshire recovered from 150 for 6 to post 303.”It ain’t over, til it’s over,” is another Berra aphorism and one the Northamptonshire lower order appear to have taken to heart. In four first innings, their last four wickets have added 648 runs – more than doubling the score on two occasions – although the picture at Canterbury was distorted slightly by Rob Newton batting at No. 11 after suffering a groin strain while fielding on Wednesday. That meant they fielded a last man with an average of 38.95, rather than the usual 21.07 of Trent Copeland.Crook’s contribution was second only to Peters, who recorded his 30th first-class century and the first by any Northamptonshire player this season. While their bowling attack has regularly treated the opposition like skittles, top-order runs have been a little less forthcoming. In April in England, that is not altogether unsurprising but this was the third time Peters has passed fifty and his batting, as well as his leadership, is likely to be crucial if Northants are to stay the course.”He’s been outstanding, he really has,” Ripley said of Peters, who is in his first season as captain. “His example batting, you’ve only got to see how dearly he sells himself in games like we’ve seen today. He’s steely, competitive, loves it when it’s tough. He’s spoken very well with the team, tactically he’s been very good and a lot of the impetus we’ve built, he’s helped us get it going.”The engine required a little turning over at the start of the day and it would be inaccurate to say that the morning session took place under a blanket of cloud only in that a blanket suggests a degree of warmth. That didn’t stop Peters from batting in shirt sleeves and, if the goose pimples helped focus the mind, it certainly wasn’t a bad idea.Peters was involved in the two most substantial stands of the innings – putting on 63 with both David Sales and Crook – but it was his temperament and focus in the face of testing spells from Kent’s raggedy old stagers, Charlie Shreck and Mark Davies, that really set the tone.Ripley said Northants had expected a tough encounter and an important test of their credentials in this fixture and, by the time the sun finally came out in the late afternoon, they had stolen a few more bases. “We’ve always had good four-day skills,” he said. “We’ve been there and gone close before and there’s a feeling that we can be there again.”

Ele premeditou. Fiz o gol para o Lucca e no final fiz a homenagem para ele – afirmou Alan Ruschel.

Delhi, Punjab, Assam enter knock-outs

A round-up of the Vijay Hazare Trophy matches played on February 21, 2013

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Feb-2013North ZonePunjab qualified for the knock-outs and maintained their unbeaten run in the tournament with a crushing 10-wicket win over Himachal Pradesh in Dharamsala. It was their fourth win in the tournament. The win was set up by 19-year-old seamer Sandeep Sharma, who picked up his first List A five-wicket haul. Himachal were 65 for 1 in the 11th over, but Sadeep triggered a batting collapse which saw the home side stumble to 83 for 8 in the 20th over. They soon folded for 129 in the 31st over.In response, Punjab openers comfortably overhauled the target in the 25th over. Chandan Madan remained unbeaten on 40, while Ravi Inder Singh, the more aggressive of the two, scored 76 with 10 fours and a six. Punjab took five points from the game and are placed at the top of the North Zone table.Delhi joined Punjab in the knock-outs after cruising to a 35-run win (by VJD method) against Services, who scored 205 for 7 in 38 overs (reduced due to fog) in Bilaspur.Delhi took advantage of the moist conditions and chose to field, reducing Services to 55 for 3 after Pradeep Sangwan struck first and Sumit Narwal picked the subsequent two wickets. Rajat Paliwal and Yashpal Singh took the score past 100 and Yashpal went on to score 52. A knock of 44 from Devender Lochab took Services to a respectable score. Delhi lost their opener Dhruv Shorey early, but Unmukt Chand (64) and Puneet Bisht (78) took the match away from Services with a 129-run partnership. Once Chand was dismissed in the 30th over, the match was stopped due to bad light, at which point Delhi had to be 138 to win and they were 172 for 3 already.Haryana got a consolatory victory in the tournament when they beat Jammu & Kashmir by 40 runs in Nadaun. The win was set up by two lower-order fifties from Rahul Dalal (56) and Harshal Patel (69) after the hosts were reduced to 102 for 7, because of three wickets from Parvez Rasool and two each from Zahoor Sofi and Manik Gupta. Dalal and Patel put on 109 for the eighth wicket and Haryana finished at 230 for 9 in 50 overs. After J&K were given a steady start by their openers, Amit Mishra struck twice within seven balls. Spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Sonu Rathee took three wickets each after that and dismissed J&K for 190. Ahmed Bandy (53) and Rasool (47) did the bulk of the scoring at the top of the order but their efforts went in vain. East ZoneBengal’s place in the knock-outs is still uncertain after they lost to Tripura by two wickets in a low-scoring thriller in Kolkata. Put in to bat first, Bengal were dismissed for a meagre 121 in 33.3 overs, as Udit Patel finished with figures of 4 for 17 and Bunti Roy and Timir Chanda took two each.Shami Ahmed made sure Tripura’s chase was not a smooth ride with two wickets in his second over. Sanjib Sanyal also chipped in with two wickets, leaving Tripura at 62 for 5 after Gaurav Bhatia made 32. However, an unbeaten knock of 34 from Timir Chanda took Tripura home even though they were losing wickets at the other end.Assam stormed into the knock-outs when they won a low-scoring match against Jharkhand by six wickets. Jharkhand were put in to bat, but lost wickets regularly throughout their innings. Only Ishank Jaggi (27) and Sunny Gupta (26) provided some resistance as the rest of the batting wilted, being dismissed for 116. Offspinner Gokul Sharma finished with figures of 4 for 32.Assam’s reply was shaky at the start, when they were 44 for 3 after 9.3 overs. However, a 69-run stand for the fourth wicket between Gokul and Tarjinder Singh effectively quashed Jharkhand’s chances of staging an upset. Assam reached their target in the 26th over and won their third match in a row.

Toby Roland-Jones makes five-star comeback to end Derbyshire resistance

Godleman, Critchley battle before Middlesex seamer seals win after four-month lay-off

ECB Reporters' Network02-Sep-2021 Middlesex 282 and 256 (Robson 52) beat Derbyshire 205 (Bamber 5-41) and 221 (Godleman 70, Critchley 58, Roland-Jones 5-36) by 112 runs Seamer Toby Roland-Jones marked his return from injury with a decisive five-wicket haul as Middlesex finally broke Derbyshire’s resistance to triumph by 112 runs at Lord’s.Roland-Jones, making his first appearance after a four-month absence due to knee surgery, delivered a spell of three wickets in 10 balls that included the scalp of Derbyshire captain Billy Godleman and finished with figures of 5 for 36.Godleman had managed to keep the visitors in the hunt for a 334 victory target with his innings of 70, his best of the season, after two early wickets fell to opposite number Tim Murtagh.Matt Critchley’s knock of 58 also proved to be in vain as Derbyshire were dismissed for 221, leaving them as the only side still without a win in the LV= Insurance County Championship this season.Murtagh gave Middlesex an immediate lift with his first ball of the morning, pinning Tom Wood in front of the stumps and he added the wicket of Leus du Plooy soon afterwards. The left-hander, who had just swung Murtagh to the midwicket boundary, attempted to repeat the shot to a ball outside off stump and dragged on to leave Derbyshire in difficulties at 60 for 3.However, Critchley proved harder for Middlesex to shift, with Martin Andersson dispatched for a couple of crisp fours as he and Godleman put together a partnership of 80 either side of lunch. The fourth-wicket pair succeeded in bringing Derbyshire’s target below 200 – but the turning point came when Godleman pulled Roland-Jones towards long leg and Andersson ran in to hold a perfectly-judged diving catch.Critchley might have followed his captain later in the same over, miscuing the ball high behind square only for it to land between three fielders, but Derbyshire were soon six down as Roland-Jones removed Alex Hughes and Brooke Guest in successive deliveries.Anuj Dal – who had hit a valuable 48 in the first innings – produced some attacking shots to reach 19 before he was unluckily run out at the non-striker’s end, with Andersson deflecting Critchley’s drive onto the stumps. That appeared to unsettle Critchley, who attempted a careless pull shot off Andersson just two balls later and sliced into the hands of second slip.It was left to Roland-Jones to wrap up Middlesex’s success and he did exactly that, having Sam Conners caught at short midwicket before knocking out Alex Thomson’s off stump.

Sussex denied in pursuit of top spot

Sussex needed only 49 runs for victory with five wickets intact when bad weather confirmed a draw in their match against Somerset

Ivo Tennant at Taunton24-Aug-2012
ScorecardLuke Wells was unbeaten on 22 when rain forced an abandonment at Taunton•Getty ImagesIf ever a Championship match finished in unsatisfactory and disappointing circumstances, this was it. When play was finally called off at 5pm, Sussex needed only 49 runs for victory and, potentially, leadership of the Division One table, with five wickets intact. There was still assistance for any spinner, competent or of middling ability, which meant they would be challenged. Yet not altogether surprisingly, the weather was the deciding element.Play did not start until noon, whereupon there was a full hour’s cricket in which four wickets fell. In two overs after lunch before the next stoppage a further wicket was taken; then 7.3 overs without further loss were followed by an early tea. And then came what cricketers refer to as “proper rain”. It was a sad finale, but no more than we have become accustomed to this summer.Sussex were all too aware of the indifferent weather forecast. They needed 133 to win at the start, the openers having scored 31 overnight. No one was more keen to collect as many runs as possible before the first, inevitable break in play than Ed Joyce, the captain, who soon flailed at a ball wide of off stump from Peter Trego and was well taken by Jos Buttler to his left. It was the kind of shot he most probably would not have played at that stage of an innings in first-class cricket in normal circumstances. He then promoted Luke Wright in the order. This appeared a sensible move when 18 runs came off the fifth over of the morning, bowled by Trego: a six over long on and three fours. A partnership with the equally quick-scoring Chris Nash, even a relatively brief one, would surely win the day. Yet the opener promptly had his off stump knocked out by Trego, who then bowled Wright, attempting to drive, as well. What with Murray Goodwin out for a duck, held at short fine leg trying to sweep Abdur Rehman, three wickets had fallen for a single run. Somerset now appreciated they had an opportunity – weather permitting. They had to contend, though, with Luke Wells, whose first scoring shot was an elegant cover-driven four off Trego and who subsequently swung Rehman to the midwicket boundary and drove Steve Kirby for a further four in the next over. When the players took an early tea, 24.3 overs had been bowled on a gloomy day. All the while there was the threat of further rain emanating from blighted Cardiff. “Shocking” as umpire Rob Bailey put it during one of the stoppages, and no-one could disagree. He and his colleague, Nick Cook, determined that a final re-start could be made at 5.10pm, but further rain put paid to that.So off to Cardiff, for FLt20 Finals Day, both teams departed. “It was a rubbish day,” Marcus Trescothick, Somerset’s captain, said. “Not a nice day for anyone. I was a little bit disappointed over how we batted in this match – losing five wickets for seven runs is not acceptable and we shall lose Abdur Rehman, who is going back to Pakistan for some one-day internationals, for our match against Surrey next week. But every match at this stage of the season is a big one – starting with T20 finals.”

Campbelle stars in hard-fought win

ScorecardWest Indies Women secured an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series against Sri Lanka Women by winning the rain-affected third Twenty20 international in Trinidad.Persistent early morning showers led to a delayed start and the match was reduced to a 16-over contest. West Indies won the toss, bowled under overcast conditions and started strongly, reducing the visitors to 30 for 3 in the seventh over. Deepika Rasangika and Shashikala Siriwardene added 26 runs for the fourth wicket, but once Siriwardene was dismissed with the score on 56, Sri Lanka collapsed and only managed to reach 77 for 8.West Indies started shakily as Sripali Weerakkody ran through the top order, picking up three wickets, as the hosts were reduced to 25 for 5 in the seventh over. However Shemaine Campbelle (27*) held her nerve, putting on 18 runs for the seventh wicket with Anisa Mohammad and an unbeaten 24 runs off just 17 balls for the eighth wicket with Tremayne Smartt (12*), to help West Indies reach a hard-fought win.The fourth T20 will be played in Trinidad on May 7.
