A 14-player squad has been picked for the trip, which includes four ODIs and three Twenty20 internationals.Satterthwaite and Tahuhu have replaced Katey Martin and Frances Mackay in the only changes from the squad that played in the World T20 in Bangladesh earlier this year. They’ve worked incredibly hard to get back in the side and I’m confident they’ll take this opportunity.”We’ve got a number of exciting young players in the side and this tour will be a huge step in their development. However it’s equally important to have players with experience and knowledge of the conditions and we have that too, so we’ve got the right mix.”Squad Suzie Bates (capt), Sam Curtis, Sara McGlashan, Sophie Devine, Katie Perkins, Amy Satterthwaite, Rachel Priest, Felicity Leydon-Davis, Morna Nielsen, Holly Huddleston, Lea Tahuhu, Hayley Jensen, Maddy Green, Georgia Guy.

England claim rare tour victory

England won a game on Australian soil for the first time since mid-November, though there were still a couple of areas of concern despite the wide margin of victory

ScorecardJos Buttler cracked 61 off 60 balls to help England to a winning total•Getty ImagesEngland won a game on Australian soil for the first time since mid-November, although there were still a couple of areas of concern despite the wide margin of victory. Alastair Cook’s run of single-figure scores continued and England were in a spot of bother at 5 for 129 halfway through the match but Gary Ballance and Jos Buttler struck fifties before the bowlers dismantled the Prime Minister’s XI in 26 overs. With Mitchell Johnson in line to return for Australia in Brisbane on Friday, having sat out the first ODI, footage of Cook and Joe Root falling to the pace of Brett Lee – 37 years old but still with a click in his heels – will doubtless make the video dossier compiled by Darren Lehmann’s analysts. Root followed up a 23-ball 3 on Sunday with 1 off 14 balls in Canberra and, without a half-century since making 87 in the second Test, his form is a cause for concern.Ravi Bopara was again deployed as England’s fifth bowler and he ran through to tail to produce eye-catching figures of 4 for 3 from three overs. The rest of the attack all performed creditably, against a batting line-up that seasoned youth with a couple of experienced hands; Boyd Rankin, Chris Jordan, Tim Bresnan and James Tredwell sharing five wickets.”It’s great to get a win. It’s going to be a morale-boost for everyone, no matter who it is against,” Buttler said afterwards, his comments reflecting just how difficult this tour has become for England since they beat a CA Invitational XI in Sydney two months ago, in the final warm-up before the Tests.”There were a lot of positives that came out of today. We got up to a challenging total and put them under pressure straight awaywith the ball. We had a lot of energy and we really tried to target early wickets and we got those. Everyone is pleased to get a win and hopefully we can take that momentum forward to Brisbane.”As in Melbourne, which ended in a six-wicket win for Australia, Cook won the toss and chose to bat, only to be sent back inside the first over – this time caught behind off a short ball from Lee. Root also did not last long but Michael Carberry, in the side for Ian Bell, steadied the innings with 47, only for another wobble to ensue. Ballance compiled 56, with just three boundaries, and Buttler then added 80 in partnership with Bresnan to help post a competitive total – perhaps aided by Lee only bowling seven overs, due to the heat. With Steven Finn again left out – his tour remains stuck in a rut – and Ben Stokes rested, Rankin and Jordan continued to lead the pace attack. Jordan made the opening incision, as Peter Handscomb dragged on for 8, and Rankin then struck twice in consecutive overs. When Brad Hodge, another former Australia international in his late thirties, who top-scored with 28, picked out Carberry in the deep trying to slog Tredwell’s offspin, the PM XI were struggling on 4 for 58.Bopara then had a hand in each of the last five wickets to fall, including a run-out, as the end came quickly. The chances of Australia being similarly obliging at the Gabba appear slim.

Watson, Samson keep Royals' citadel intact

For the second time this season, Rajasthan Royals promoted a wicketkeeper to No. 3, and stunned the opposition to set up a win

The Report by Sidharth Monga29-Apr-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Shane Watson pitched in with an all-round effort, picking up three wickets and scoring 41•BCCI

For the second time this season, Rajasthan Royals promoted a wicketkeeper to No. 3, and stunned the opposition to set up a win. Chasing 172, with Shane Watson, Brad Hodge and Owais Shah yet to bat, Kerala’s 18-year-old Sanju Samson scored 63 off 41, leaving Royals 56 to get off 34 balls, which they chased, but not without the mandatory inexplicable drama that is the IPL’s USP. Watson, who left the chase all but finished, had been instrumental in keeping Royal Challengers, who have now lost all their four away matches, down with the wickets of Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli among his three. The game began with Royals presenting Gayle spin when hostile short bowling has only managed to trouble him. Gayle raced away, but Watson got him for 34 off 16 with an innocuous-looking delivery angling away from him. From 44 for 1 in four overs, Royal Challengers went without a boundary for 6.1 overs. The run rate fell, and when AB de Villiers and Kohli tried to correct it, they both holed out. With the innings not going anywhere, R Vinay Kumar gave them a fighting target with three sixes of James Faulkner in the final over, two of those off slower balls. Faulkner had had a good birthday until then with two catches a run-out. Vinay would try to turn the game around in the last over of the next innings too, but that’s for later. In the chase, Royals stayed with their plan of using Watson lower down the order. Rahul Dravid and Ajinkya Rahane opened, and got them off to a swift enough start, but it was Samson who pinched Royal Challengers. There might have been the odd slog, but a major part of the innings relied on cricketing shots. The standout was successive sixes over extra cover to welcome Murali Kartik, who would have hoped he had not recovered from his illness in time for this match. Those sixes took Royals to 60 for 2 in 7.2 overs, and the chase was on its way. Watson played the second fiddle while Samson went at it, reaching 25 off 21 by the time Samson fell. Watson and Hodge went about with the pursuit coolly until Hodge seemed to have killed off the chase with two sixes off Ravi Rampaul in the 18th over. If you thought 18 off 15 was the done thing, though, you haven’t watched enough of IPL.Watson top-edged RP Singh in the next over, but six off six was easy enough. However, Hodge tried to finish it off in one hit, and was bowled to leave five to get off four. Owais Shah then managed to get run out at the non-danger end, and we were smack in the middle of an IPL implosion. Back to the same last-over characters: Vinay and Faulkner.Faulkner took the single, and then Stuart Binny pulled a four to beat the team that carries his home city’s name.

Vettori, Patel reprimanded after drinking incident

Daniel Vettori, the former New Zealand captain, and Jeetan Patel have apologised for their conduct after a night out in Queenstown

New Zealand Cricket said the behaviour of Jeetan Patel and Daniel Vettori was “completely unacceptable”•Getty Images

Daniel Vettori, the former New Zealand captain, and Jeetan Patel have apologised for their conduct after a night out in Queenstown that left Patel unable to take the field for New Zealand XI during the tour match against England. While neither spinner is currently involved with the international side, confirmation of another drinking incident among its players led New Zealand Cricket to release a statement calling their behaviour “completely unacceptable”.Patel was a late call-up for the New Zealand XI, after Ish Sodhi’s withdrawal, and conceded 122 runs from his 21 overs in the match without taking a wicket. He missed the second day’s play, reported at the time as due to his feeling unwell, but it has since been revealed that Patel suffered mild concussion after an alleged altercation with a bouncer outside a bar the night before.NZC said it was “deeply disappointed” with the pair. The news comes after Doug Bracewell was ruled out of the first Test with a cut foot sustained following a party at his house. Bracewell was hurt while cleaning up, although he also apologised for the incident and was “reminded of his responsibilities”.”New Zealand Cricket understands that Jeetan Patel was refused entry to a bar in Queenstown,” reported on Wednesday. “He subsequently fell and hit his head. Patel returned to the team hotel, felt unwell and took himself to A and E.”Team management has spoken strongly to Patel and Vettori, telling them that their behaviour was completely unacceptable. Both players apologised to team management at the time.”Vettori has not played any cricket since the World Twenty20 and was in Queenstown to work with the New Zealand medical staff as he continues his recovery from an Achilles injury. He said: “My behaviour was completely unprofessional in going out and I should have spent time with Jeetan in another way. I would like to apologise to the NZ Cricket medical team who I was there to work with and to anyone else who is disappointed in my behaviour.”Patel returned to the Test side in Vettori’s enforced absence after a strong English season with Warwickshire, where he helped them to the County Championship. He took 11 wickets in four Tests against India and Sri Lanka but was dropped following the tour of South Africa, to be replaced by the uncapped Bruce Martin. Patel, who is not centrally contracted, is understood to have been struggling since the death of his mother in January.”I am sorry for my behaviour that evening and I accept that it was totally inappropriate for me to be out drinking during a match where I was representing my country,” Patel said.Rumours about Patel surfaced in the aftermath of Bracewell suffering his self-inflicted injury, although NZC initially refused to comment on the matter. In the build-up to the first Test, the New Zealand coach, Mike Hesson, deflected questions about an alleged drinking culture in the set-up.”We’ve got really good standards in terms of the expectations we have on our players. They are also human and also spend a lot of time away from the group,” Hesson said at the time. “The expectation is that what they do certainly doesn’t conflict or affect their preparation and we’re pretty strong on that.”Last year, Bracewell and Jesse Ryder were dropped from the ODI squad after breaking team protocol banning the consumption of alcohol. Ryder, who had a history of drink-related indiscretions, has not played for New Zealand since, having embarked on a self-imposed sabbatical from international cricket.

India take 1-0 lead with eight-wicket win

An Indian victory that seemed imminent minutes after tea on day four was eventually completed by Sachin Tendulkar, 40 minutes before lunch on day five

The Report by Daniel Brettig26-Feb-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsVirender Sehwag had his second failure of the match when he was dismissed for 19 by Nathan Lyon•BCCI

An Indian victory that seemed imminent minutes after tea on day four was eventually completed by Sachin Tendulkar, 40 minutes before lunch on day five. Australia’s resistance over that period arrived too late to change the result, but in it may be found the clues to a tighter contest when the second match begins in Hyderabad on Saturday.MS Dhoni, R Ashwin, Virat Kohli and Tendulkar were the pivotal contributors to India’s 1-0 series lead, showing greater discipline and awareness of the sort of cricket best played on the MA Chidambaram Stadium’s clay court. Save for Michael Clarke’s first-day century and James Pattinson’s fiery pace, it was not until Moises Henriques stood up with the bat in the second innings that the tourists showed evidence of catching up.A target of only 50 to win was reached with the help of some Tendulkar fireworks – towering sixes from his first two deliveries against Nathan Lyon – but Pattinson again bowled well to the openers and Lyon showed far greater consistency of line and control of length than he had managed while being taken for 3 for 215 in the first innings.Smart stats

India’s eight-wicket win is their 13th in Chennai. It is their most successful venue followed by Delhi, where they have 11 wins.

India have now won three of their last four Tests against Australia in Chennai (draw in 2004). The last defeat for India against Australia in Chennai came in 1969.

This is only the third time that Indian spinners have picked up all 20 wickets to fall in the match. The previous instance was against New Zealand in Auckland in 1976. Pakistan have done so twice and England once (Old Trafford 1956 when Jim Laker picked up 19 for 90).

The win is India’s best-ever against Australia in terms of wickets. Overall, they have won eight times chasing (seven at home).

With the win, MS Dhoni now moves level with Sourav Ganguly on the list of Indian captains with the most Test wins. His win-loss ratio (1.75) is also slightly superior to Ganguly’s 1.61.

The 66-run stand between Moises Henriques and Nathan Lyon is the second-highest last-wicket stand for Australia against India. The highest is 77 between Allan Border and Dave Gilbert in Melbourne in 1985.

India were left with some questions about their opening pair, M Vijay and Virender Sehwag doing little in either innings, and they may also wonder about subtracting another seam bowler from their XI should the Hyderabad surface be anything like this one. Australia have found a steady batting hand in Henriques, but much of their display in this match will be the cause of serious introspection.Henriques and Lyon had put on 66 for Australia’s last wicket, a defiant gesture after the earlier batsmen had failed to stand their ground. Henriques’ unbeaten innings completed a fine double for the debutant, who has surely made his place safe for the second Test.Ultimately it was Ravindra Jadeja who ended the stand after 25 minutes on the final morning, switching from over to around the wicket against Lyon and coaxing an inside edge onto pad that was snapped up by short leg.Pattinson’s first ball of the innings was a snorter, pitched short and seaming back sharply at Vijay, though it angled away from Matthew Wade and flew away for four byes. The ball kept Vijay thinking, and after depositing Lyon for one straight six, he fell when an indecisive drive was well taken by Henriques at a shortish mid-off.In the next over Cheteshwar Pujara offered a sharp chance when padding up to Lyon, the ball striking pad and glove but eluding Wade, who was unable to adjust to the ball’s shifting trajectory. Sehwag sliced a brace of boundaries over the slips cordon from Pattinson, and when Peter Siddle replaced him he drove sweetly down the ground.Lyon, meanwhile, showed some evidence of improvement in his bowling. He twirled down far fewer deliveries that could be tucked around the corner behind square leg, and the better line forced some impatient premeditated strokes from Pujara. It also undid Sehwag when he snicked to Clarke at slip. This little joust was ultimately immaterial to the result, sealed as it was by Tendulkar’s sixes, but demonstrated that Lyon was learning.

Outright wins for J&K, Tripura

ScorecardTarjinder Singh’s attempt at saving the game for Assam by scoring a fourth-innings century was in vain, as Jammu & Kashmir managed to take the seven wickets they needed on the final day to achieve an outright win.Assam began the fourth day in Guwahati on 46 for 3, chasing an improbable 477. They lost wickets at regular intervals at one end, while Tarjinder battled for 105 at the other. They were dismissed for 241 in 89.1 overs. Ram Dayal took 3 for 50 for J&K while, Parvez Rassol and Waseem Raza took two each.
ScorecardFifteen wickets tumbled on the final day in Nadaun as Tripura bowled out Himachal Pradesh in 60 overs in the fourth innings to secure a 169-run victory.Tripura resumed their second innings on the fourth morning on 116 for 5, and they slumped to 177 all out. Manisankar Murasingh scored most of the runs, converting his overnight 19 to 63. Vikramjeet Malik took 5 for 36 for Himachal.A target of 359 was always out of Himachal’s reach but they failed to draw the game as well. Paras Dogra scored an unbeaten 105 but got no support from his team-mates. Aatish Bhalaik, who made 30, was the only other batsman to score more than 15. Sanjay Majumder and Rana Dutta took three wickets each for Tripura.
ScorecardOnly three wickets fell on the fourth day at the Palam A Ground in Delhi, where Kerala and Railways played out a tame draw. Railways had the better of the game by having secured the first-innings lead.Kerala were 9 for 0 in their second innings at the start of the final day and they plodded to 193 for 3 before declaring, having scored at only 2.50 runs per over. Abhishek Hegde made 107 while Rohan Prem was unbeaten on 53.Chasing a target of 173, Services batted only 15 overs in the fourth innings and reached 85 for 0 before the match was called off.
ScorecardAndhra took the last Goa wicket that stood between them and a first-innings lead comfortably on the final morning, after which the match in Visakhapatnam meandered to a draw.In response to Andhra’s first-innings 393, Goa were 285 for 9 at the start of the final day. They got to 328 before Ravikant Shukla, who had reached a century, was bowled by Shaik Basha.Andhra scored 193 for 6 in their second innings before declaring to set Goa a target of 259. AG Pradeep was the top-scorer with 65. Goa’s openers survived the small passage of play before the match was drawn. They played out 26 overs and scored 14 runs.
