Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal was quick to congratulate Ousmane Dembele after seeing the Paris Saint-Germain star beat him to the 2025 Ballon d’Or award. The teenager finished second in the rankings but didn’t go home empty-handed as he won the Kopa Award for a second year running, and his father is confident that it will be a different story next year.
Dembele beats Yamal to 2025 Ballon d'Or
Dembele has been crowned the best male player in the world after winning the 2025 Ballon d'Or award. The PSG star pipped Yamal to top spot after inspiring Luis Enrique's side to a quadruple last season. The campaign also brought a first Champions League title for the French giants after a 5-0 victory over Inter in the final.

Yamal may have tasted disappointment in Paris but he was spotted congratulating Dembele on his win with a handshake, a warm hug and a few words. The teenager also did not go home empty-handed as he won the Kopa Trophy for the second year in a row.
Warning fired out by Yamal's father
Yamal's father, Mounir Nasraoui, was at the ceremony and fired out a warning after seeing Dembele beat his son to the top prize. "Next year is ours," he told COPE after the awards had been handed out in Paris.

Celtic moved back to the top of the Scottish Premiership table on Sunday afternoon with a hard-fought 2-1 win away from Parkhead against Kilmarnock.
The Hoops needed a header from Japan international Daizen Maeda and a last-gasp penalty from Kelechi Iheanacho to claim all three points in the match.
As shown in the clip in the post above, summer signing Marcelo Saracchi was key to the first goal with his sublime cross from the left flank to tee up the Celtic centre-forward to score.
Marcelo Saracchi's performance in numbers
The Uruguay international was selected to play from the start for the Scottish giants to provide first-choice left-back Kieran Tierney with a rest, after he had to pull out of the Scotland squad through injury.
Saracchi played the first 58 minutes of the game, before being replaced by Tierney, and his assist for Maeda was the only chance that he created in that time on the pitch.
The left-footed battler had a few nervous touches early on in the match, and gave possession away 12 times in total, but he steadied himself to put in a solid performance, winning three of his four duels, per Sofascore.
Chalkboard
Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.
Whilst Saracchi’s assist for Maeda’s goal could be described as Tierney-esque, there was another player on the pitch who could be the club’s next Tierney in the making, Colby Donovan.
Why Colby Donovan may be the next Kieran Tierney
The Celtic number 67 returned to Glasgow for a second spell at the club after he initially broke through the academy to become a first-team star before his £25m move to Arsenal in 2019.
Tierney, as shown in the graphic above, made 170 appearances and won five titles in the Premiership after emerging from the youth ranks to lock down the left-back spot.
Brendan Rodgers may have unearthed the club’s next cab off the ranks in the form of Donovan, whose performance showed that he is more than capable of starting games at right-back for the Hoops.

As you can see in the table above, the Scotland U21 international was incredibly solid defensively throughout the match, winning seven of his ten duels in total.
Rodgers trusted the youngster, who made two prior appearances off the bench this season, to step in as a starter in place of the injured Alistair Johnston and Anthony Ralston, and the teenage starlet did not let him down.
To go along with his defensive excellence, Donovan also had 101 touches of the ball and completed 82% of his attempted passes, which shows that he was comfortable and reliable on the ball for the most part.
After a couple of nervy touches early on, which were to be expected on his full debut, the 19-year-old talent settled down and showcased his class on and off the ball at right-back to prove that he is a genuine first-team calibre option for the manager to call upon.
With Johnston out for several more weeks with a hamstring injury, Donovan has a real chance to nail down a starting spot in the side for the foreseeable future, which would then put him in position to be the back-up to the Canada international instead of Ralston.
It is now down to the academy graduate to deliver quality performances, like his display against Kilmarnock, whenever he is called upon to make sure that Rodgers has no excuse to drop him.

If he can do that, Donovan may well go on to be the next Tierney as another academy graduate full-back who could be a real success at Parkhead. One thing is for sure: his performance on Sunday was a terrific first step towards achieving that.
Quais clubes ele passou? O Lance! responde.
Livres no mercado!
Chelsea struck deep into stoppage time at the end of the second half to beat Liverpool 2-1 and continue the Premier League champions' miserable run. Goals at either end of the match proved decisive for Enzo Maresca's men, who have put the pity and woe of an injury crisis behind them to come away with three massive points at the very last.
With just over 10 minutes on the clock, Chelsea pulled ahead. Moises Caicedo, who very nearly joined Liverpool back in 2023, was afforded too much space on the edge of the 18-yard-box, and he punished the visitors for their nonchalant defending with a piledriver from distance.
The hosts wanted a penalty late in the first half when Alejandro Garnacho was felled by Dominik Szoboszlai, only for their protests to amount to nothing, with both referee Anthony Taylor and the VAR deeming there was insufficient contact to award a spot kick.
Liverpool should have been level within a minute of the restart when substitute Florian Wirtz teed up Mohamed Salah, who somehow fired wide with the goal gaping and Chelsea got away with a lapse in concentration at the back. On 63 minutes, the Blues weren't as lucky when Alexander Isak brilliantly brought down a high cross from Szoboszlai for Cody Gakpo to slot home.
Jamie Gittens and Estevao Willian both emerged from the bench to bring fine saves out of Giorgi Mamardashvili as the clock ran down, while the Brazilian winger's cross for Enzo Fernandez was nodded narrowly wide in added time.
That was the prelude to the final minutes of a chaotic match as Chelsea successfully threw everything into one final attack, where Marc Cucurella drove a low cross right through the Liverpool box for Estevao to convert at the back post and send the home supporters into bedlam. Maresca was shown a red card for sprinting down the touchline in celebration as his side closed out a huge win in their season.

Goalkeeper & Defence
Robert Sanchez (6/10):
Opened up Liverpool a couple of times with long kicks over the top, though annoyed the home fans with wayward passing at a shorter distance. Made a couple of comfortable saves.
Reece James (8/10):
Was expected to start in midfield but instead slotted into the back four as the more conventional right-back. Moved to centre-back after Badiashile went off. Couldn't do much about stopping Isak's assist for Szoboszlai but made a vital interception to block a cross bound for the Swedish striker afterwards. Stood up as a leader when Chelsea needed one to keep their heads.
Josh Acheampong (6/10):
Made a fine account of himself on another rare start before succumbing to an injury shortly after Liverpool's leveller.
Benoit Badiashile (7/10):
Did superbly well to contain the threat of Salah coming inside before being forced off with injury shortly after the break.
Marc Cucurella (8/10):
Got under Salah's skin to contribute to a really sloppy evening for the Egyptian on another return to Stamford Bridge. Popped up with the match-winning assist.

Midfield
Malo Gusto (4/10):
A surprise starter in midfield instead of James. Looked unnatural in that role for long stretches but did technically get the assist for Caicedo. Moved back into defence once Badiashile was substituted and notably lost the run of Gakpo for the equaliser.
Moises Caicedo (8/10):
Opened the scoring with a sensational strike from over 20 yards against the team who wanted him so desperately two years ago. Brought that usual crunch in midfield though didn't have a lot of support from a creative standpoint.
Enzo Fernandez (5/10):
At times it was easy to forget that the Argentine World Cup winner was even on the pitch, particularly when Liverpool gained control of the contest.

Attack
Pedro Neto (6/10):
Put in one hell of a shift to help cover whoever the right-back was at any given time. Found little joy trying to break Liverpool down, mind. Subbed for Estevao.
Joao Pedro (5/10):
Found himself extremely isolated up against Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate. Eventually replaced by Guiu.
Alejandro Garnacho (6/10):
A live-wire that Liverpool struggled to contain, even if his end-product was lacking. Taken off for Gittens.

Subs & Manager
Romeo Lavia (6/10):
On for the injured Badiashile. Opened play up nicely with his trademark drops of the shoulder.
Jorrel Hato (5/10):
Replaced Acheampong after he too pulled up but was far from assured when trying to nullify Salah.
Estevao Willian (9/10):
Introduced for Neto. Got fans on their feet every time he touched the ball, such was his unpredictability, and was fully deserving of scoring the winning goal. Phenomenal.
Marc Guiu (5/10):
Brought on for Pedro as Chelsea turned to a more physical No.9.
Jamie Gittens (6/10):
Came on for Garnacho. Like Estevao was a handful for the Liverpool defenders.
Enzo Maresca (7/10):
It was quite an ugly contest for the most part, but Maresca's men were great value for the three points amid their injury woes. Picked up a red card for his celebrations for the winner but not too sure he'll care.
Manchester United have endured somewhat of an overhaul of the squad this summer, with Ruben Amorim splashing the cash during his first summer window at Old Trafford.
With less than a week remaining until the market slams shut, the 40-year-old has already spent around £200m – all on players within the final third of the pitch.
Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha have all made the move to the Theatre of Dreams, but none of the stars have yet netted their first goal in any of the first two Premier League outings.
FFC Manchester United Sesko Mbeumo Cunha
Players such as Victor Lindelof, Christian Eriksen and Jonny Evans were released at the start of the summer, freeing up some of the funds to land the aforementioned trio.
However, further players are likely to be offloaded before Monday’s deadline, with numerous players touted with big-money moves away from Amorim’s side.
The latest on United’s potential departures this summer
Kobbie Mainoo has emerged as a surprise option to depart United in the coming days, after being an unused substitute in each of the club’s two opening league outings.
The likes of Bruno Fernandes, Manuel Ugarte and Casemiro have all been preferred over the academy graduate in recent days – casting doubt over his long-term future at Old Trafford.
As a result, the 20-year-old is now said to be open to a departure before the deadline, with the likes of Real Madrid and Chelsea monitoring his current situation – with a £45m transfer fee being mooted.
The Englishman is not the only player touted with an exit, with bomb squad member Alejandro Garnacho edging ever closer to a departure, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The journalist claims that the Argentine’s move to join Chelsea is now “very advanced” after the player rejected a proposal from Saudi Arabia – stating he only wants to move to Stamford Bridge.
It’s also been reported that a fee in the region of £50m with future add-ons has been agreed, with only minor details remaining before the 21-year-old departs Amorim’s side.
Why United selling £50m star would be a bigger blow than Mainoo
Mainoo has endured somewhat of a rapid rise over the last couple of years, with no supporter able to envisage the impact he would’ve had on the first-team squad.
There’s no denying that the Red Devils have fallen way below the expectations set by the fanbase, but the 20-year-old midfielder has often been a shining light – often popping up in crucial moments.
He announced himself to the supporters with a last-minute strike against Wolves back in February 2024, with his effort securing a 4-3 win for the club at Molineux.
Goals in the FA Cup and against Lyon in the Europa League have further highlighted the impact he’s made within the first-team, with the hierarchy potentially living to regret any deal that would see him depart the Theatre of Dreams.
However, a deal for Garnacho to depart could arguably be a bigger blow, losing another top youth prospect who could develop into an elite-level forward.
The Argentine made his debut for the Red Devils back in April 2022 – going on to rack up just shy of 150 appearances, and looking like the future of the club at one stage.
Despite scoring 11 times and producing 10 assists across all competitions throughout 2024/25, he was left on the bench for the Europa League final – prompting a fall-out with the manager after comments on social media.
He’s since been placed in the bomb squad at Old Trafford, but it could prove to be a decision that comes back to bite them – especially if he moves to a divisional rival.
Garnacho’s tally of 21 goal contributions last season showcases the talent he possesses within forward areas, something which the Red Devils have lacked already this campaign.

Amorim’s side have only netted one goal in the opening two league outings, with the youngster able to help the side in their quest should they keep hold of him beyond the summer.
However, it appears as though he’s set to leave in favour of a move to Chelsea, with the Blues potentially getting themselves a bargain given his output and tender age – having the potential to explode in the capital.
There’s no denying that Amorim wants to make his own stamp on the squad – but selling star youngsters like Mainoo and Garnacho could turn ugly, especially if they can fulfil their potential away from Old Trafford in the years ahead.
He'd revive Fernandes: Man Utd chasing the "best English CM since Scholes"
Manchester United want to sign a midfielder before the end of the transfer window.
Manchester United fell to a disappointing defeat at Manchester City on Sunday, and Roy Keane didn’t mince his words when reviewing one Red Devils star’s performance.
Manchester United come unstuck in comprehensive derby defeat
Truthfully, the Red Devils were second-best by a considerable margin as they begin to deal with the fallout of a derby loss that has left them sitting 14th in the Premier League table.
Ruben Amorim will be the man who cops the majority of criticism, something that seems only natural as he has now won just eight of his opening 31 matches in the English top-flight, which isn’t a run of form that bodes well when factoring in the size of Manchester United.
ManchesterUnitedmanager Ruben Amorim talks to the fans after the match
Speaking on Premier League Productions, former Red Devils midfielder Owen Hargreaves was stunned that Kobbie Mainoo wasn’t chosen to start against Pep Guardiola’s men, claiming that he ended up being the best player on the pitch for the visitors in the end.
He stated: “Where do you start? There are a lot of issues. How Kobbie Mainoo doesn’t play in this team I’ll never know. He came on for that game and in half hour he was probably their best player, by a country mile. So first of all he’s got to play. Sesko is not ready. He scored lots of goals in Germany but he didn’t look ready today.”
The damage had already been done by that point, and plenty of Manchester United stars have come in for criticism after an unceremonious display.
Altay Bayindir and Manuel Ugarte were two culprits, though football is a team game and everyone needs to take their share of the blame as Manchester United look to bounce back against Chelsea this weekend.
While there is still every chance Amorim’s men can turn around their fortunes, Roy Keane was frank in his assessment of one star’s performance at the Etihad Stadium.
Luke Shaw earns the brunt of Roy Keane criticism after Man Utd defeat
Live on Sky Sports, Roy Keane indicated that Luke Shaw’s performance fell below expectations against Manchester City, citing his role in Phil Foden’s opening goal during proceedings, which the Irishman feels he could’ve done more to prevent.
He stated via The Mirror: “Very good from City, Doku and Foden. Timing perfect not getting in there too early. But United’s defending, the two midfielders beforehand are too square, and Shaw just gives up.

Some players never lose their ability even after retirement…
BySean Markus Clifford Sep 14, 2025
“It’s a nice bit of skill, but Shaw’s an England international player. He’s got hundreds of games under his belt, he doesn’t even get his body position right. It’s like he has thrown the towel in.
“We know people can run off the back of Bruno, that’s been going on for years. But my goodness, even before that, you’ve got two midfielders – they are too square. One pass takes them out. Far too easy. Shaw just throws the towel in there.”
Although criticism of evidently talented players is sometimes harsh, Manchester United were culpable of lapses defensively and came up against a ruthless opponent who dispatched three of their four ‘big chances’ created to claim three points.
Ultimately, Manchester City are a side likely to contend for the title, and conceding countless opportunities is always likely to result in punishment, something that Shaw and his teammates will now hope to rectify.

Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee could be on the move this January, with Serie A side Como reportedly exploring a deal for the Dutchman. Manager Cesc Fabregas’ ambitious project is said to view Zirkzee as an ideal attacking addition, and United are open to either a loan or permanent transfer midway through the current Premier League season.
Zirkzee without minutes at Man Utd under Amorim
Zirkzee has found playing time hard to come by under Ruben Amorim, featuring only as a substitute in all four of his appearances this season. Despite joining United for £36.5 million just 14 months ago, the Dutch striker has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford. Report suggest United would now consider offers in January, including a loan deal or outright sale.
AdvertisementGetty Images SportComo show interest in January Zirkzee move
Cesc Fabregas’ Como have been credited with interest as per The Sun, as the Italian club aim to strengthen their frontline and push toward the top half of Serie A. Juventus, who tracked Zirkzee last summer, are also monitoring developments. Fabregas reportedly views the 24-year-old as the perfect profile for his dynamic, possession-based setup.
Zirkzee has struggled to shine at Man Utd
The Netherlands international arrived from Bologna after firing them into the Champions League with 11 goals but has yet to make a lasting impact in England. Zirkzee has scored only seven times across 53 appearances for United, raising questions about his fit in Amorim’s system. With United’s attack underperforming, offloading the forward could also help fund reinforcements.

AFPZirkzee under contract at Old Trafford until 2029
Zirkzee remains under contract with Manchester United until 2029, giving the Red Devils leverage in any negotiations. Discussions over his future are expected to take place after the international break. If no breakthrough in game time arrives, a January return to Serie A with Como could suit all parties involved.
Newcastle’s defeat to Liverpool in their second Premier League outing of the season was disastrous, not in terms of the result and certainly not the performance but the repercussions the game.
Fabian Schar looks like a possible absentee for the Leeds United fixture following a concussion and Anthony Gordon will definitely be out for the next three fixtures following his suspension.
After the game, Bruno Guimarães took to social media to share his thoughts on the last-minute defeat, saying: “Mixed feelings. We will never give up under any circumstances. We deserved more, but many times football is not fair. We stick together. There is still a lot ahead, and your support will always be fundamental. Howay the lads.”
The biggest setbacks from the game were the injuries to his fellow midfielders however, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton. The injuries are so severe that Newcastle have set out on a search for a new central midfielder to cover the position during their recovery. New reports today have indicated progress in that search.
Newcastle take first steps towards Gallagher signing
Reports from Spain have indicated that Newcastle have expressed interest to Atlético Madrid over the signing of England midfielder Conor Gallagher due to his “ability to adapt to different roles makes him ideal for a high-intensity system”.
Newcastle are one of four Premier League teams to have made contact with the Spanish side for the £33 million player, with the others being Manchester United, West Ham and Crystal Palace.
The report states: “Atlético Madrid hadn’t planned to part ways with Gallagher so soon. However, market pressure and offers from the Premier League could change that.”
In the event that Atlético do sell Gallagher, they are likely to use the funds to try and sign Manchester City’s Spanish midfielder Nico González as a replacement.
Newcastle the new front-runners
It had previously been reported that six clubs were interested in Gallagher, but the reports from Spain are now indicating that this has been reduced to four. Tottenham were exploring the idea of signing Gallagher as a replacement for Yves Bissouma, but as the window gets closer to closing, his exit seems less and less likely.
Everton had been reported as the strongest contenders for Gallagher alongside Newcastle, but the report suggests their financial situation may not allow them to make this signing. The Toffees have spent over £110 million so far this window with Tyler Dibling being their most recent signing.
Of the clubs remaining in the race for Gallagher, Newcastle can offer one thing that the others can’t: Champions League football. While Crystal Palace will also be in Europe this season, they have been demoted to the Europa Conference League. It would have been hard enough for them to tempt Gallagher with Europa League football, but the demotion has made them an even less tempting prospect.
