Peirson, Bartlett put Queensland's first Shield win in sight

Peirson made 82 and Steketee added 48 not out after Bartlett took 5 for 32 as Victoria crumbled with the bat

Jimmy Peirson has batted Queensland towards hope of their first Sheffield Shield victory of the summer against Victoria, after a helter-skelter day two at the MCG.On a day where 15 wickets fell in the first two sessions, Queensland went to stumps at 195 for 8 in their second innings and leading by 244.Peirson was out pulling for 82 just before the close, but not before combining for a crucial 119-run eighth-wicket partnership with Mark Steketee, who made 48 not out.The two-and-a-half-hour vigil between the pair was at complete odds with the rest of the day, and left the low-scoring match hanging slightly in Queensland’s favour ahead of Sunday’s play. After Victoria began on Saturday at 43 for 2, they lost Peter Handscomb in the first over when he edged Xavier Bartlett to Matt Renshaw at second slip. That set the tone for the next four hours of play, as Bartlett finished with 5 for 32 and rain hovered around the MCG for part of the morning.Only Marcus Harris (42), Handscomb (24) and Tom Rogers (11) reached double figures for Victoria as they were all out for 123 to concede a 49-run first-innings deficit. The chaos then continued into Queensland’s second innings. In-form Fergus O’Neill took two wickets in his first over to remove Bryce Street and Angus Lovell, while having another lbw shout turned down.Renshaw looked in imperious form for Queensland, driving in the air and punching the ball off his pads. But he too fell inside the first 10 overs, caught down legside off O’Neill as Queensland’s batting began to falter.Jonathan Merlo also claimed a brilliant one-handed diving catch at point to remove Ben McDermott, as one of three quick wickets for quick Sam Elliott.Queensland then found themselves 67 for 7 just before tea, and a drought-breaking first win of the season against ladder-leaders Victoria was looking shaky.Enter Peirson. He and Steketee became the only batter to look comfortable all day, with the wicketkeeper-batter driving the Victoria quicks when they erred too full. Peirson also cut and pulled well as the innings went on, and hit spinner Todd Murphy for two boundaries through the covers in one over.Steketee also did some damage, hitting four boundaries in his knock and sending Murphy deep over the long-on boundary. And while Peirson was set up by late by Mitch Perry and caught in a stacked legside field, he and Steketee had given Queensland the slight advantage.

Man Utd identify £166k-a-week Bayern star as priority target, contact made

Manchester United have now identified a “strong leader” from Bayern Munich as one of their priority targets, and his agent has made contact over a potential deal, journalist Christian Falk has revealed.

Man Utd looking to sign defender alongside Baleba

Brighton & Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba has quickly risen to near the top of Man United’s shortlist, and they are now confident they will be able to get a deal for the Cameroonian over the line, but central midfield is not the only position in which they are keen to strengthen.

Indeed, a formal move has now been made for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, but it could be difficult for United to win the race for the Englishman, given that reigning Premier League champions Liverpool are known to be interested too.

Not Baleba: Man Utd now submit £69m offer to sign "spectacular" midfielder

The Red Devils have tabled a bid for a central midfielder.

ByDominic Lund Aug 13, 2025

As a result, the Red Devils may be forced to move on to alternatives, and they have now identified a new priority signing, according to Falk, who recently told CFBayern that Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano is one of their key targets.

In fact, Upamecano’s agent, Moussa Sissko, has now offered a number of Premier League clubs the chance to sign his client, including Man United, as reaching an agreement on a new deal with the German club has proven to be difficult.

The 26-year-old’s current contract is set to expire next summer, which means the Bundesliga champions are at risk of losing him on a free transfer, and they are hesitant to let the negotiations drag on for too long, which could pave the way for an exit.

"Strong leader" Upamecano could be exactly what Man Utd need

United legend Roy Keane has been extremely critical of United captain Bruno Fernandes in the past, with the Irishman saying: “I would take the captaincy off him 100 per cent. I know it’s a big decision, obviously they changed the captaincy with Maguire, but Fernandes is not captain material.”

Bruno Fernandes

A lack of authority on the pitch is arguably a big reason behind the Red Devils’ demise, which means the Bayern defender could be an ideal addition to the squad, given his leadership capabilities.

After watching the Frenchman play for Bayern against Celtic in the Champions League, UEFA observer Michael O’Neill said: “He was strong defensively, won all his duels, was great in possession and a strong leader.”

The former RB Leipzig man has also performed well across some key defensive metrics over the past year, when compared to other centre-backs.

As such, the £166k-a-week star’s strong defensive showings and leadership skills could make him the ideal addition to Ruben Amorim’s backline.

Fulham make approach to sign £30m British ace who is set to leave Chelsea

Fulham have now made an approach to sign a “sensational” Chelsea player who is also wanted by Wolverhampton Wanderers, according to a recent report.

Fulham stepping up their transfer plans after quiet start

It’s been a very quiet transfer window for the Cottagers so far, as Marco Silva’s side have added just one new player to their squad, and that is goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte, who has joined from French side Montpellier. And with the Premier League season underway in less than three weeks, the club are finally stepping up their transfer plans.

Muniz replacement: Fulham now make approach to sign £25m "top striker"

The Cottagers have now made contact over a deal for a centre-forward.

ByDominic Lund Jul 9, 2025

The Athletic’s David Orstein revealed on Saturday that Fulham are now in advanced talks to sign Reiss Nelson from Arsenal. The 25-year-old spent last season on loan at Craven Cottage, where he scored one goal in 11 Premier League matches.

The Whites want to bring Nelson back to Craven Cottage on loan with either a buy option or obligation included. Fulham and Arsenal are close to reaching an agreement, but work still needs to be done on both sides for the deal to go through.

Meanwhile, Fulham have also expressed interest in signing Raheem Sterling from Chelsea. The England international has no future at Stamford Bridge after spending last season on loan at Arsenal. The Blues have placed a £20 million asking price on Sterling, who has two years left on his contract, but his £300,000-a-week wages make any deal complicated.

Fulham submit approach to sign “sensational” £30m Chelsea ace

Sterling is not the only Chelsea player wanted by the Cottagers, as according to talkSPORT, Fulham have made a formal approach to Chelsea to sign Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

The report states that the Blues value Dewsbury-Hall as a squad player, and while he is not someone they are actively looking to sell, he can leave Stamford Bridge for around £30 million

The 26-year-old, who has been dubbed “sensational” by former Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers, followed Enzo Maresca to Stamford Bridge last summer, but the Englishman hasn’t been able to establish himself as a key player.

Last season, Dewsbury-Hall played 13 games in the Premier League, the same number he played in the UEFA Conference League. A potential arrival at Craven Cottage would see Dewsbury-Hall join the likes of Emile Smith Rowe, Andreas Pereira, Sander Berge and Alex Iwobi as fighting for a place in Silva’s midfield department.

However, they are not alone in their pursuit of the midfielder, as Wolves are also interested in Dewsbury-Hall and have identified him as a potential target in what remains of the transfer window.

Jangoo earns maiden West Indies Test call-up for Pakistan tour; Motie back

Shamar Joseph is unfit and Alzarri Joseph has chosen the ILT20 over the Test series in Pakistan

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Dec-2024Trinidad & Tobago batter Amir Jangoo has earned a maiden call-up to the West Indies Test squad for the two-match series against Pakistan, which begins on January 16 in Karachi. Meanwhile, left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie returns to the side, having missed the two Tests against Bangladesh at home last month as he was playing at the inaugural Global Super League in Providence.Motie will be leading West Indies’ spin-bowling contingent, which also has Kevin Sinclair and Jomel Warrican.Jangoo and Motie replace the fast-bowling duo of Shamar Joseph and Alzarri Joseph. While Shamar is suffering from shin splints which forced him to miss the ODI series against Bangladesh earlier this month, Alzarri is unavailable because of a clash with the ILT20 in the UAE, where he will be turning out for MI Emirates, which CWI termed as “other engagements” in their release.Jangoo was rewarded for his consistent performances in the domestic four-day competition in 2023-24, when he scored 500 runs in five matches at an average of 63.50, with two centuries and a fifty, to be Trinidad & Tobago’s highest run-getter. Jangoo also recently smashed a century on ODI debut against Bangladesh to help West Indies ace their third-highest chase in the format.”Motie rejoins the squad to bolster the spin attack, while Jangoo’s selection comes on the back of his consistency across formats in regional cricket, as well as his demonstrated high level of competency against spin bowling,” West Indies head coach Andre Coley said. “For the Test series against Pakistan in January 2025, the focus is on building on what we have done well, and transforming the learnings from 2024 into tangible results.”The rest of the squad remains on expected lines. Lamine Yamal at Bayern Munich? Bundesliga champions' ambitious attempt to sign Barcelona teenager collapsed at last moment after Jorge Mendes intervention

Bayern Munich quietly plotted a €5 million swoop for teenage sensation Lamine Yamal in 2022, only for Jorge Mendes’ late to block the move.

  • Bayern held secret Madrid talks in 2022
  • Jorge Mendes blocked deal, backed Barca stay
  • Yamal later signed €1bn release clause
Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

A remarkable revelation has emerged that Bayern came close to snatching Barcelona wonderkid Yamal in 2022. Then-sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic and technical director Marco Neppe even held discreet meetings in Madrid with Yamal’s former agent Ivan de la Pena, as they tried to pull off an audacious transfer, according to a recent report by

The Bavarians had devised a long-term plan to move the youngster’s family to Germany, wait until he turned 16 in 2023, and secure him for a compensation package worth around €5m. Bayern believed they had an early advantage before the rest of Europe caught on to just how extraordinary the winger was.

But the deal collapsed at the final stage when super-agent Mendes entered the picture, swiftly taking over Yamal’s representation and shutting the door on Bayern’s hopes. Barca then accelerated his integration into the first team, and the player’s trajectory was set firmly in Catalonia.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

This episode highlights just how close Bayern came to rewriting the story of one of football’s brightest young stars. Today, Yamal is tipped as a frontrunner for the 2025 Ballon d’Or, but his career could have unfolded very differently had Bayern pressed harder.

It also shows the importance of decisive action in youth recruitment. Bayern’s brief hesitation over paying €5m for a 15-year-old, considered a risk at the time, cost them dearly. Within a year, Yamal had already debuted for Blaugrana's senior team, and by 2023 he had signed a new deal with a staggering €1 billion release clause, ensuring no rival could realistically prise him away.

For Barca, it reinforces the value of their La Masia academy and the trust they placed in Yamal by handing him minutes at just 15 years old. For Bayern, it is another painful “what if” in the transfer market, similar to other young talents who slipped away.

  • TELL ME MORE

The report detailed how Salihamidzic’s trip to Madrid originally focused on Gavi, but Bayern’s scouts had been blown away by Yamal’s youth performances. Over dinner with De la Pena, the Bavarians made clear they wanted both.

The plan was concrete to relocate Yamal’s family, prepare him for life in Germany, and line him up alongside Gavi and Adam Aznou, who actually joined Bayern in 2022. But Mendes’ intervention changed everything. When contacted, he reportedly told Bayern that the family could “possibly be convinced” for €5m, but the German club wavered on whether to take the risk.

Meanwhile, Barca were already showing faith, and with Yamal’s senior debut at 15 years and 9 months became the defining moment that tied him emotionally to Barca. The chance to step out at Camp Nou while still a schoolboy outweighed any financial promises from abroad.

    WHAT NEXT?

Barca’s decision to trust Yamal early has already paid off, with the winger becoming both a Spain international and one of the world’s most marketable talents. For Barca, the priority will be to continue protecting their jewel amid growing global interest, ensuring he remains the face of the club’s post-Messi era.

Bumrah vs Konstas continues to enliven Border-Gavaskar Trophy

An exchange of words late on day one has added more spark to one of the series’ most compelling duels

Andrew McGlashan03-Jan-2025Sam Konstas was at the centre of a fiery exchange with India’s stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah amid a dramatic finish to the opening day of the final Test at the SCG, which has set up another compelling duel when play resumes on Saturday.Australia’s reply started with just 15 minutes of the day remaining, and first ball Konstas walked down the crease at Bumrah and whipped him through midwicket. Konstas then exchanged words with Bumrah before what became the penultimate ball of the day after Usman Khawaja had pulled away from the strike, seemingly to try and eat up time to ensure there wouldn’t be another over.Related

Konstas turned to Bumrah and appeared to say something, which prompted umpire Sharfuddoula to step in. The next delivery passed through outside off stump. Then, with the final ball of the day, Bumrah had Khawaja edging to second slip, and immediately turned and locked eyes with Konstas at the non-striker’s end and took a couple of steps towards him, before being joined by several team-mates, including Virat Kohli, in exuberant celebration.”I feel they had a little chit-chat,” Rishabh Pant said of the exchange. “They wanted to waste some time. I feel that’s the reason he had a conversation with Jassi [Bumrah]. He [Konstas] said something, I didn’t hear it, but I feel that’s the only thing which he wanted to do to just waste some time so we don’t bowl one more over.”The India players were animated as they left the field, having a few minutes earlier been bowled out for 185, while Konstas walked off a few metres behind Khawaja, with Australia 9 for 1.”It was an interesting one,” Beau Webster said of how Australia’s innings started. “I was sitting next to Heady [Travis Head] in the rooms watching on the TV and the first ball he [Konstas] ran down and clipped him over midwicket. There almost wasn’t surprise anymore, it was like there he is, he’s away.”Sammy’s a very confident young man, it’s what they do these days, those youngsters, they get after it and put themselves out there. He’s got all the skills and all the talent to back it up so hopefully he has a really good day tomorrow and puts a few runs on the board.”Usman Khawaja walks back after being done in by Jasprit Bumrah•Cricket Australia via Getty ImagesKonstas’ selection in the latter part of the series has had a dramatic impact. He struck 60 off 65 balls in his debut innings at the MCG, where he scooped Bumrah on a regular basis, and in the process of his stay was shoulder-barged by Kohli between overs. Bumrah struck back against Konstas in the second innings by removing him for 8.In the field, Konstas was heavily engaged with the packed MCG crowd and in the final innings, as Australia pushed for victory, was a vocal presence around the bat.”He’s playing with a lot of flair,” Scott Boland told . “He’s definitely under their skin. You can see that in the last few moments there.”Speaking ahead of the SCG Test, Konstas’ mentor Shane Watson said he had been surprised by how outgoing the 19-year-old had been.”My experience of dealing and working with Sam has been a very quiet, reserved personality,” he said. “[He’s] a very deep thinker and certainly not an extrovert. But obviously what we saw in the Test match is that he absolutely is a showman.”Bumrah’s late strike will raise India’s hopes that he has one more huge performance in him to cap an outstanding series with the visitors needing to win to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.”Think there’s definitely a method to go about batting on this wicket, but Jasprit is a world-class bowler and no doubt he’s going to challenge our whole batting group,” Webster said. “He’s phenomenal with his lengths and lines, it is going to be tough on a wicket that will offer a fair bit for him.”Pant acknowledged India would have liked a few more runs but was confident in India being able to stay competitive in the match.”I think I wouldn’t say it’s a par score, I think anything over 220 to 250 would be a par score,” he said. “But still a very competitive score because the way ball is moving now I think there’s a lot of help for the bowler and hopefully we can capitalise on that.”

Man Utd send scouts to Premier League ground to watch "generational" star

Manchester United are looking to bolster their squad before the window closes and took time during the opening Premier League weekend to watch one of their targets in action, according to a report.

Speaking after the match, Gary Neville urged Ruben Amorim on Sky Sports to buy a new goalkeeper after Altay Bayindir’s error that led to Riccardo Calafiori’s goal, citing movement on a new number one as a pivotal part of their remaining business.

He stated: “There is a glaring issue for United that cannot be ignored and that is they need to find a new goalkeeper. ‘They have to, I am absolutely unequivocal on that.

“I have experience at United for 20 years where there were two big periods of seven or eight years with Schmeichel and Van der Sar, and in between we had seven or eight goalkeepers in a seven or eight year period.”

David De Gea has been linked with a surprise return to Manchester United after rediscovering his form at Fiorentina. However, Amorim is also plotting other additions with the window only a couple of weeks away from closing.

The Red Devils’ pursuit of Carlos Baleba has hit the skids. Nevertheless, Valencia star Javi Guerra has emerged as an alternative to fill the hole in the engine room, given he is available at a much cheaper price point than over £100 million.

Looking to keep their options open, Manchester United took the opportunity to watch one of their targets in action over the weekend.

Manchester United scout Adam Wharton at Stamford Bridge

According to TBR Football, Manchester United sent scouts to watch Adam Wharton against Chelsea last Sunday as Crystal Palace emerged with a valiant point at Stamford Bridge.

Amorim is impressed with his profile and believes he can fit into the holding role, which the Red Devils are looking to fill, and he certainly took his chance to sign after putting up 100% successful dribbles and eight passes into the final third.

It should be noted that Wharton moving to Old Trafford is deemed unlikely. Regardless, the Red Devils casting their eyes on his progress is certainly something to watch over the coming weeks.

Last term, the former Blackburn Rovers man appeared 27 times and helped Crystal Palace to FA Cup glory. He has also been labelled “generational” by Matthew Stanger, lending credence to the level of talent he possesses.

With competition set to be fierce for his signature, Manchester United will hope to put forward a compelling case to the 21-year-old as he mulls over his future.

Crystal Palace want to sign £26m star from under nose of Nottingham Forest

Crystal Palace have started off the campaign with a trophy to their name and could now be set to go toe-to-toe with Nottingham Forest to sign a talented midfield operator, per reports.

Crystal Palace lose CAS appeal after winning Community Shield

Oliver Glasner and his club have been involved in a turbulent couple of days that saw them win the FA Community Shield against Liverpool at Wembley Stadium, though the joy of another day in the sun has been blighted by recent developments.

Taking to social media platform X, journalist Ben Jacobs delivered that Crystal Palace have lost their CAS appeal against Europa League expulsion, and they will now have to settle for a place in the Europa Conference League this term.

Marc Guehi lifts the Community Shield with Crystal Palace

He said: “Crystal Palace have lost their CAS appeal and will play in the UEFA Conference League this season. Nottingham Forest will replace them in the Europa League. Palace will consider all legal options.”

Nottingham Forest will replace Crystal Palace in the Europa League, igniting more fire between both clubs ahead of their meeting on matchday two of the Premier League season next weekend.

Chelsea await in their opener at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, and the Eagles will hope to bring Leicester City playmaker Bilal El Khannouss into the fold as soon as possible, even if his arrival depends on Eberechi Eze leaving the club.

Veteran Raheem Sterling has held talks over a move to Selhurst Park and may be another option to provide a spark of creativity across the forthcoming season.

Crystal Palace battle Nottingham Forest for Yunus Musah

According to reports in Italy cited via Area Napoli, Rai Sport journalist Ciro Venerato has confirmed Crystal Palace have joined Nottingham Forest in the race to sign AC Milan midfielder Yunus Musah.

Napoli are also keen on the United States international and although the Rossoneri could ask for just under £26 million, even a fee of £21.6 million may be enough to prize him away from the Serie A giants.

Capable of playing in a variety of central midfield roles or on the right flank, the 22-year-old is a versatile presence who can deputise where needed. It should be noted that Napoli are looking to sell Giacomo Raspadori before accelerating their pursuit.

Labelled a “complete player” by Stefano Pioli, the AC Milan star completed 21 dribbles and won 19 tackles in the Italian top-flight last term, illustrating why he is a competent operator in several positions.

After losing their Europa League place to Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace could make a statement by bringing him to Selhurst Park as they now look forward after kicking the new term off with an encouraging victory over Liverpool in the Community Shield.

West Brom could land Mason's very own Rondon by signing £4.3m star

Ryan Mason has undergone a lot of pre-seasons as a player.

However, the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder turned West Bromwich Albion boss is now close to completing his first summer in football as a rookie manager, with all the pre-season fixtures done and dusted ahead of Championship action kicking back off.

ryan-mason-tottenham-hotspur-eric-dier-lenglet-aston-villa-team-news

Mason will be hoping he’s the spark from the dug-out that guides the Baggies back up to the promised land of the Premier League, with West Brom deep into their fifth straight season as a second-tier outfit when matches get back underway.

The 33-year-old has been well-backed in the transfer window, with a whopping £4.7m solely splashed out on landing the clinical Aune Heggebo from Brann, as the lavish spending looks set to potentially continue in the centre-forward department.

West Brom could go back in for £4.3m star

The proof will soon be in the pudding as to whether that amount was too steep to fork out for Heggebo.

However, his numbers playing in his native Norway do not lie, with a mightily impressive 51 goals coming his way for Brann from 146 appearances. Subsequently, Mason is now spoiled for choice up top between his new, shiny 24-year-old and West Brom’s main marksman, Josh Maja.

He could have even more options to call into action if reports from Spain are to be believed, with a new update coming to light on West Brom’s previous centre-forward target, Chris Ramos.

Indeed, Diairo De Cadiz has stated that the Cadiz attacker is generating plenty of interest this summer in his services, but there is no rush to offload him just yet.

The La Liga 2 club is waiting for an offer in the £4.3m region to consider parting ways, having had a far lower £2.1m bid from the Championship side come their way in recent times.

The hope will be that the 6-foot-3 Spaniard can go on to be Mason’s very own Salomon Rondon, with the lofty striker often a physical brute when powering home goal after goal for Cadiz, much like the imposing Venezuelan was at the Hawthorns.

How Ramos can be Mason's own Rondon

Of course, when Rondon was leading the line as a formidable centre-forward, West Brom were seen as Premier League regulars, rather than second-tier promotion material.

While the now 35-year-old was never the most clinical or the most eye-catching – with a reasonable 28 strikes coming his way from 120 Baggies outings – nobody could speak ill about his commitment to the cause, as his final season at the Hawthorns saw him win a dominant 7.7 duels on average per Premier League clash.

Ramos has shown off a similar prowess in the air for Cadiz all across his ongoing stay at his hometown club, with this powerful effort above showing off the 28-year-old’s ability to head home under pressure in a similar vein to Rondon.

Staggeringly, Ramos wasn’t too far off Rondon’s duels won total either when plying his trade in La Liga during the 2023/24 campaign, as the Spanish forward averaged a mighty 7.1 successful duels per match, even as Gaizka Garitano’s side succumbed to relegation.

West Brom do need an option up top that can throw themselves about with conviction, especially with Daryl Dike now back in the treatment room, with Ramos also a reliable source of goals for Cadiz across his last two breakout seasons, as seen in his tally of 15 strikes in all competitions.

While Ramos might struggle initially to instantly break into the first-team ranks, possessing a striker with such strong physical attributes will be an effective weapon for Mason to have up his sleeve across the long EFL season to come.

If he does go on to be a success, the Cadiz number 16 could retrace Rondon’s footsteps even more by becoming a tough, no-nonsense attacker for the West Midlands outfit in the luxurious Premier League.
