'This was a Herculean task' – MLS commissioner Don Garber hails Club World Cup as 'incredible success' and 'proud moment' for soccer in the U.S.

The head of America's top domestic league says the tournament was a significant moment for soccer in the country

MLS commissioner Don Garber is full of praise for the revamped Club World Cup, dubbing it an "incredible success" and a "proud moment' for soccer in the U.S., saying the competition served as a perfect test run for the 2026 World Cup.

"This was a Herculean task. I don't think everyone understands how difficult it is to have dozens and dozens of matches, all running several times a week, in stadiums that have never hosted this type of competition," Garber told Reuters.

"Everything wasn't perfect but nothing in life is perfect,” Garber said. "If you strive to make progress every day, to innovate both on and off the field, you can achieve something special. I look forward to seeing what this tournament can be in the future."

AdvertisementWHAT DON GARBER SAID

Garber hailed the impact of the CWC.

"Whenever you do something new that changes people's perspective on international competition, there are always questions about how it will come together and what impact it will have," he said. "We always have a bit of a chip on our shoulder here in the U.S. soccer business."

He also said he was proud of the performances the participating MLS clubs – Inter Miami, Seattle Sounders and LAFC – although Lionel Messi's squad was the only one of the three to win a game and get out of the group stage.

"It surprised a lot of people." he said. "For decades, we've been trying to show the world we can be an influential, meaningful part of the global soccer conversation."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The expanded 32-team tournament, the brainchild of FIFA president Gianni Infantino, was played across 12 venues in 11 cities in the United States, and considered something of a dry run for the 2026 World Cup. Chelsea beat PSG 3-0 in the final, but there was a strong global presence throughout, with Fluminense making the semifinal.

While acknowledging that Europe's clubs remain dominant on the world stage, Garber said the CWC offered a platform for emerging clubs and leagues.

"There's a lot of positive things happening in Brazil, in the United States," he said. "Some of the leagues that don't get as much exposure as the super clubs were able to stand tall."

Karun Nair to return to Northamptonshire in April

Karun Nair will return to Northamptonshire for seven County Championship fixtures in April and May after he went unsold in the IPL auction.Northants brought Nair in for the final three matches of last season as part of a failed bid to avoid relegation to Division Two, but his brief stint with the club was a success. He registered scores of 78, 150 and 21 in his three innings and John Sadler, Northants’ head coach, said Nair was his “main target” for 2024.”Not only did he score some incredible runs for us, his calmness, his temperament, and his hunger for more runs was superb,” Sadler said in a press release. “We are delighted to get him on board with us again and I’m sure he will be a super asset for us again this season.”His availability for the early stages of the season was unclear until mid-December due to the possibility of IPL commitments, after he was brought in as a replacement by Lucknow Super Giants midway through IPL 2023. But he went unsold at the mini-auction in Dubai, and has now committed to the first seven games of the Championship season.”I’m thrilled to be returning to Northamptonshire for another stint of County Championship cricket.” Nair said. “Our aim is to win games and get promoted and I’m excited to get stuck in with the bat and help the team secure victories.”I would like to thank the coach and captain for believing in me and giving me this wonderful opportunity. He remains one of two men to score a triple century for India in Tests alongside Virender Sehwag, who did so twice.Nair will be replaced by compatriot Prithvi Shaw midway through the English summer. Shaw agreed to return to the club for the second half of the season after a successful stint last year and is due to arrive in June after representing Delhi Capitals in the IPL.Chris Tremain, the Australian seamer, will feature alongside Nair as Northants’ second overseas player in the first month of the season, while the club recently announced that Sikandar Raza will join them for the T20 Blast.

Mir Hamza, the Pakistan left-arm seamer, has signed to play for Glamorgan in the first half of the upcoming County Championship season. He will be joined in Cardiff by Mason Crane after Hampshire allowed the legspinner to join Glamorgan on a season-long loan.Mark Wallace, Glamorgan’s director of cricket, hailed the arrival of Crane, describing the 27-year-old as “a high-quality player who gives us an attacking skill set in all formats”. Crane has played a Test and two T20Is for England, most recently in 2018, but struggled with injury. He was a Blast winner with Hampshire in 2022 but only played 14 times for the club last season.”I’m very thankful for the opportunity at Glamorgan and incredibly excited to get to work and push towards a successful season with the team,” Crane said.Hampshire’s director of cricket, Giles White, said the move would help Crane’s development but that he could be recalled if needed. “Mason hasn’t had the game time here at Hampshire over the last couple of years and time with Glamorgan offers him the opportunity to play first XI cricket across the formats,” he said.”Having had many conversations with him, we both feel that this is the best for his career and the development of his game. The deal is structured in a way that allows his return if we need him later in the season.”Hamza, 31, has been capped five times in Tests, most recently on Pakistan’s 2023-24 tour of Australia. He has taken 434 first-class wickets at an average of 22.40, and previously represented Sussex and Warwickshire in county cricket.”It’s excellent news that Mir has agreed to join us at the start of the season,” Wallace said. “He’s an international bowler with a fine record and previous experience in county cricket. We’re looking forward to welcoming him to Cardiff.”Mir Hamza has played five Tests for Pakistan•Getty Images

Hamza’s signing comes in the wake of Grant Bradburn’s appointment as head coach. Bradburn previously held a number of roles at the PCB, including assistant and head coach, before joining up with Glamorgan last month.Bradburn said: “As coach, I am excited for our group to add such an experienced performer in Mir Hamza. Having worked with Mir previously in Pakistan, I have full confidence that Mir will add huge value to our team both on and off the field.”Hamza, who had a short stint at Warwickshire last year and played for Sussex in 2019, will be available for Glamorgan’s first seven Championship games up until the end of May.Hamza said: “I am thrilled to be joining Glamorgan for the County Championship this summer. It will be exciting to work with Grant again after working with him with Pakistan, and I can’t wait to join up with the squad, get to training and help this great club push for a positive start to the season. I have heard many great things about Cardiff from my team-mates who played there last summer and look forward to meeting all of the supporters.”The club also announced a dual-captaincy appointment for the summer, with Sam Northeast taking the reins in the Championship and Kiran Carlson leading in white ball. Northeast, now in his third season at Glamorgan, succeeds David Lloyd after the allrounder left to join Derbyshire.Glamorgan finished fifth in Division Two in the 2023 Championship, drawing 12 of their 14 games.

Amid United's interest in Sesko, The Athletic reports that Leipzig are among several clubs now looking at Hojlund. That has 'raised the prospect' of a swap deal for the two strikers, with United also likely to have to stump up a fee given the disparity in the players’ valuations.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The report adds that Hojlund, who says he wants to stay and "fight" for his spot at United, would not be expected to start each game if Sesko – who is valued at upwards of £65 million ($85.5m) – joined the club. The Danish international has not been told he is directly up for sale, with the Red Devils currently valuing him at just under £45m ($59m) – a long way off his £72m ($94.7m) transfer from Atalanta in 2023.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Inter Milan reportedly held concrete interest in Hojlund, 22, but the Serie A team moved on to Ange-Yoan Bonny, who joined from Parma for €26m (£22.5m). If United do sign Sesko, they are likely to have to sell players first, with Alejandro Garnacho at the top of that list.
