Big Young upgrade: Everton make late contact to sign "beautiful" PL star

The January transfer window officially slams shut on Monday of next week and Everton manager David Moyes could look to bolster his squad before the deadline.

He came in to replace Sean Dyche in the Goodison Park dugout earlier this month and has won two of his three Premier League matches in charge so far, beating Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Scottish boss, who is in his second spell at the club, is yet to make his first splash in the market since making his return to Merseyside, but still has a few days left to do so.

In fact, the Toffees are reportedly looking to bolster their squad before the end of the window and they have a Premier League player in their sights.

Everton's interest in Premier League defender

According to Turkish outlet Star, Everton are one of the teams plotting a deal to sign Kyle Walker-Peters from relegation-threatened Southampton.

Transfer Focus

His contract is due to expire at the end of the season, and the Star claims that the English right-back does not want to stay at St. Mary’s beyond the end of that deal.

It states that the Toffees are already in contact over a possible swoop for the former Tottenham Hotspur man, who would be available on a free transfer in the summer.

The report claims that Super Lig side Galatasaray are also interested in the defender and have already submitted an offer to sign him for a fee of £5m.

This suggests that Everton may have to push to sign the 27-year-old star in the current window, to avoid losing out to the Turkish giants, and they should do exactly that because he could come in as a big upgrade on Ashley Young.

Why Walker-Peters is an upgrade on Young

The Southampton defender, who can operate at right-back or left-back, has been a star for the strugglers in the Premier League this season, after he created 12 ‘big chances’ in 43 outings in the Championship during their promotion campaign last term.

Young has started 17 of his 19 appearances in the top-flight for the Toffees in the 2024/25 campaign and the former England international turns 40 in the summer.

Everton and Moyes could land his long-term successor by signing Walker-Peters, who is 12 years younger, either this month or in the summer window on a free transfer.

As you can see in the table above, the Saints full-back has outperformed Young in a host of defensive and attacking metrics, despite playing for a team that has amassed just six points.

Walker-Peters, who was described as a “beautiful” footballer by ex-boss Russell Martin, has the dynamism and ability to offer more in transition, as shown by his dribbling numbers, whilst also being harder for opposition players to get past.

He could come in as a big upgrade on Young, by winning more duels and being dribbled past less frequently, whilst also providing more quality offensively and as a ball carrier, which is why Moyes should push to bring him in as soon as possible.

Arsenal keen on "special" £25m ace who’s now available to sign this summer

Arsenal are closely monitoring a “special” young midfielder, who has been cleared to leave his club for a fee of £25m in the summer, according to a report.

Gunners eyeing a midfielder

The Gunners had a quiet January, with Mikel Arteta ultimately deciding to wait until the end of the season before making any major additions to his squad, and there is a belief they are close to agreeing a deal for a midfielder.

Club chiefs hope to have the deal for Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi wrapped up before the summer, with the Spaniard still high on the list of targets at the Emirates Stadium.

Zubimendi would set the north Londoners back around £50m, so he would not come cheap, and the 26-year-old is not the only midfielder Arsenal are interested in signing at the end of the season.

According to a report from CaughtOffside, the Gunners are closely monitoring Sunderland’s Chris Rigg, and after a recent development, a deal could be a possibility.

The Black Cats have now cleared Rigg’s departure for a fee of £25m in the summer, with the Championship side now resigned to sanctioning his departure, having previously been resistant to letting him leave.

However, it could be a difficult task to win the race for the Sunderland star, as he is also attracting interest from a number of other top Premier League clubs, alongside the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid.

At this stage, it is unclear which club are leading the race for the 17-year-old, but a move to Arsenal or Liverpool could be tempting, with both clubs well-placed to compete for major trophies.

Rigg has shades of Jude Bellingham

Much like Jude Bellingham at Birmingham City, Rigg has managed to force his way into the first team of a Championship side at an extremely young age, scoring four goals in 27 league games this season.

The comparisons don’t stop there given the youngster’s keen eye for goal, becoming the second-youngest player to score in the second tier back in September 2023, missing out on Bellingham’s record by just 13 days.

The teenager was lauded as a “special talent” by Sky Sports’ Dougie Critchley earlier this season, and it is clear to see why so many top clubs are queueing up for his signature in the summer.

A price tag of £25m may seem steep for a player who is still so young, but he has already gained a great deal of first-team experience at Sunderland, and there is every indication his value could skyrocket in the coming years.

Matt Mason has been appointed as England Women’s fast bowling coach.Mason, 48, has coached extensively in the county game as well as his native Australia, and joins after leaving his current position as bowling coach with Warwickshire. He will be charged with developing a clutch of young quicks coming into the national team, including Issy Wong, Lauren Bell and Freya Kemp, following the retirement of Anya Shrusbole and Katherine Brunt’s decision to focus on limited-overs cricket. The ECB is currently hunting for a new head coach for the women’s team, after Lisa Keightley opted against extending her contract. Her assistant, Tim McDonald, looked after the bowlers previously but departed from his role after the Commonwealth Games.”I am really excited about taking on this role and I can’t wait to get started with England Women,” Mason said. “There are only a handful of jobs I would have left Warwickshire for, this is one of them. I had no intention of leaving the club, I loved my time there, but when this opportunity came up I felt I had to take it.”I’ve never coached at international level before, it’s an exciting prospect and I don’t know if such a chance would ever arise again in the future. I’m looking forward to meeting the group, getting to know everyone and hopefully helping drive the team forward to on-field success.”Mason began playing in Western Australia but spent most of his career with Worcestershire, taking more than 400 wickets for the county. He retired in 2011, having already started to work for the club as a coach, and subsequently took on similar roles with Leicestershire, Western Australia and Perth Scorchers.Mason, who only joined Warwickshire in April, was highly rated for his work with a number of young Australian bowlers. The Edgbaston club said they had already started the process of looking for a replacement.Jonathan Finch, director of England women’s cricket, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have secured someone of the calibre of Matt. He was a very strong candidate for the role and we’re looking forward to seeing what he brings to the England Women’s cricket team.”It was important that we recruited someone with a track record of working with and improving a group of fast bowlers at elite level. Matt will play a central role in developing current and future England bowlers, and we are excited by the leadership he will bring to fast bowling across the women’s game.”We’re in the process of recruiting a head coach and Matt will be a valued part of that person’s coaching staff, bringing great expertise and experience in the field of fast bowling.”I would also like to thank Warwickshire CCC in allowing Matt to make the move to his new role so quickly.”

Why INEOS failed with late bid to sign "strong" new midfielder for Man Utd

Manchester United endured a tough transfer window as they looked to bolster their ranks after a disastrous first half of the Premier League season, and now it has been revealed that they missed out on a late deal for a potential improvement to Ruben Amorim’s side.

Manchester United's awful 2025 continues

Amorim’s arrival at Old Trafford has done very little to improve matters at the Theatre of Dreams, and their latest 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace left the Red Devils marooned 13th in the Premier League.

A spot in Europe next season appears out of the question for the Red Devils, though they remain well clear of any relegation danger with Leicester City a full 12 points behind them in the final drop zone spot.

It was a difficult January transfer window too. The Red Devils landed young Lecce defender Patrick Dorgu in a deal worth up to £30m, but in Antony and Marcus Rashford lost two forwards, while speculation continued to swirl around Alejandro Garancho before he ultimately stayed put.

Though neither Rashford nor Antony featured heavily in Amorim’s plans, it has left United without any depth at the top of the pitch, and with neither Rasmus Hojlund nor Joshua Zirkzee insipring confidence with their performances, the United boss opted to play Kobbie Mainoo as a no.9 against Palace, a move that in turn leaves their midfield looking light.

24 hours later, the news that Tottenham had won the race to sign Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel on loan emerged, leaving United without another forward joining the club before the deadline. And now, it has emerged that they also failed with a late bid to strengthen their midfield.

Man Utd midfielder offer rejected by Juventus

That comes according to reports in Italy, which claim that the Red Devils tried to make a late loan move to sign Douglas Luiz on transfer deadline day, only for the Red Devils to emerge too late as potential suitors.

It was widely reported that Luiz could leave Turin in January, but that Juventus were targeting a loan move with an obligation to buy the former Aston Villa man, who has endured a torrid time since signing for the Italian giants just months ago.

Hailed as a “strong” by former Sporting Director Monchi, Luiz had been heavily linked with Manchester City, but it was the Red Devils who attempted a buzzer-beating swoop for the Brazilian. The report claims that “they made a last-minute approach to Juventus” to take the midfielder back to the Premier League.

However, they were too late. Juventus had already let Nicolò Fagioli depart for Fiorentina and as a result “decided to retain the Brazilian” for cover, with the bid coming too late for them to sign a replacement.

Instead, Juventus moved to add to their defence with a deal to sign Lloyd Kelly, keeping Luiz in limbo and leaving Manchester United short of one of their transfer targets.

Liverpool in talks to sign "extraordinary" £50m+ forward ahead of Arsenal

Liverpool are believed to be in talks to complete the signing of an “extraordinary” attacking player when the summer transfer window arrives, according to a fresh claim.

Latest Liverpool news

The Reds are back in Premier League action on Sunday afternoon, making the trip to Manchester City for another huge game in their title push.

There is no question that Liverpool have wobbled a little of late, drawing four of their last eight league games, not to mention crashing out of the FA Cup at the hands of Plymouth Argyle. A win at the Etihad would feel significant, but further dropped points would really give Arsenal hope.

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez

Regardless of what happens between now and the end of the season, the Reds could make a number of new signings this summer, strengthening in various areas of the pitch. Atletico Madrid forward Giuliano Simeone has been linked with a move to Anfield, giving Arne Slot even more depth in the final third, amid doubts over the futures of Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota.

Bayer Leverkusen wing-back Jeremie Frimpong has also been backed to seal a switch to Liverpool, potentially even being looked at as a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold, should the vice-captain join Real Madrid at the end of the season.

Liverpool in talks to sign "extraordinary" £50m+ attacker

According to a new report from Caught Offside, Liverpool have “held talks” over the signing of Atalanta winger Ademola Lookman this summer.

The Nigerian is “on the radar of a number of top clubs”, including the Reds and Arsenal, with his current team possibly wanting as much as £53.7m for his services. The talks with Liverpool are described as the “most advanced”, along with the Gunners.

Atalanta's Ademola Lookman in action with AC Milan'sEmersonRoyal

Lookman could be a hugely exciting addition for Liverpool, having matured so much as a player since his time in English football with the likes of Charlton Athletic and Everton.

Last season, the 27-year-old famously scored a hat-trick in the final of the Europa League, inspiring Atalanta to a 3-0 victory over much-fancied Leverkusen, and his manager Gian Piero Gasperini has lauded him, saying:

“He’s [Lookman] a top player. In terms of character, there are perhaps players who have more continuity and are more solid, but that’s normal. Even his role is difficult. He always has to be very fit, but he has become a truly extraordinary player, among the best in Europe and the world. Because he has improved his consistency and in some ways he has started to be an important Atalanta player.”

This season, Lookman has continued to shine for Atalanta, scoring 10 Serie A goals in 17 starts, not to mention netting five times in the Champions League from his centre-forward role.

Liverpool make contact to seal blockbuster £75m deal to sign "perfect" star

After a late James Tarkowski equaliser left them feeling bitter in the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, Liverpool have reportedly turned their attention towards a blockbuster summer deal.

Liverpool transfer news

It was far from pretty, it was full of cards, full of controversy and it was, therefore, a fitting farewell to the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park. For a moment it looked as though Liverpool’s Egyptian King was about to get a royal goodbye, only for Everton to spoil Mohamed Salah’s evening.

Whilst they now find themselves seven points clear at the top of the Premier League nonetheless, the Reds may take a few days for that to be the conclusion they take after tensions boiled over at full-time – resulting in red cards for both Arne Slot and Curtis Jones.

Alas, once calm is restored, those at Anfield will remain seven points clear at the top of the Premier League with 14 games remaining to seal a first title for Slot at the first time of asking.

It’s then that the Reds could turn towards potential reinforcements. According to SportBild, as relayed by Sport Witness, Liverpool have now made contact over a deal to sign Castello Lukeba alongside a number of Premier League sides.

The central defender reportedly has a release clause worth as much as €90m (£75m) at RB Leipzig, which means a deal will not come cheap. Should Liverpool lose Virgil van Dijk on a free at the end of the season when his contract expires, however, then they may have little choice but to pursue the Frenchman.

Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk celebrates scoring their fourth goal with Mohamed Salah

As things stand, Van Dijk, Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold are all set to leave as free agents, having all so far failed to put pen to paper on fresh deals.

"Perfect" Lukeba could replace Van Dijk

Seven years ago, Liverpool splashed out as much as £75m to welcome what would prove to be the ultimate game-changer in Van Dijk. Now, as the Dutchman potentially departs, the Reds could splash the cash once again to welcome an impressive replacement.

Still just 21 years old, Lukeba could receive the chance to follow in the footsteps of both Dominik Szoboszlai and Ibrahima Konate by swapping Leipzig for Liverpool before attempting the impossible task of stepping up in Van Dijk’s place.

Whilst replacing Van Dijk would be no easy task, Lukeba is among the candidates who have the potential to eventually do so.

Described as the “perfect” left-back and left centre-back hybrid by analyst Ben Mattinson, the RB Leipzig man looks set to have quite the decision to make when the summer transfer window arrives. Whether that results in a move to the Premier League and more specifically Anfield remains to be seen.

What is certain is that if Lukeba does depart, his hefty release clause should result in one of the most expensive deals of the summer.

Leeds have struck gold on a sensation who’s now a £25m star in the making

Leeds United’s late show against Sunderland on Monday night handed Daniel Farke’s side a huge step towards ending their stint in the Championship come the end of the season.

The victory over their promotion rivals moved them seven points clear of third place, with just 13 games to go, extending their unbeaten run in the league to 15 in the process.

Pascal Struijk’s two efforts off the bench demonstrated the importance of substitutes for the Whites this campaign, with every player, whether it be a starter or an impact player having a say in their ambitions of returning to the Premier League.

It’s safe to say the disappointment of last season’s play-off final defeat is firmly in the rearview mirror, potentially going one better in securing automatic promotion given the current buffer they’ve built in recent weeks.

However, the fact Farke has been able to do so after numerous key departures over the summer has made the German’s job at Elland Road all the more impressive.

Crysencio Summerville’s stats at Leeds in 2023/24

After relegation to the second tier in 2022/23, winger Crysencio Summerville was handed a crucial role in the first team to try and secure Leeds an immediate return to the top flight.

He’d previously been an impact player in the Premier League the season prior but cemented his place as a key performer for Farke in his debut campaign at the helm.

The Dutchman would register 20 goals and nine assists in his 46 league outings, producing countless moments of magic and subsequently claiming the Championship Player of the Year award.

However, after such a successful stint, coupled with the failure to claim promotion, Summerville would depart to join West Ham United last summer in a deal worth £25m.

Losing such a talented player was always going to be a blow for the supporters, but it appears that the club have done a superb job in landing a replacement for the youngster – aiding their chances of returning to the top flight this year.

The Leeds star who’s now a £25m star in the making

Players like Summerville don’t come around very often possessing a skill set that not many talents are capable of replicating – making any replacement have a huge task on their hands.

However, Manor Solomon arrived on loan from Tottenham over the summer, with supporters not knowing what to expect after his lack of impact in North London.

Regardless of the expectations placed on his shoulders, it’s safe to say the Israeli international has exceeded beyond anyone’s imagination, registering seven goals and seven assists in his 26 Championship games to date.

The 25-year-old has popped up at key moments for Farke, including the 2-0 win over Norwich City, in which he registered a goal and an assist, playing a vital role in the triumph against the manager’s former side.

Despite his lack of impact in previous seasons, he was labelled as a similar player to Summerville in 2022/23 by FBref, matching or bettering the Dutchman in numerous key areas.

Solomon, who’s previously been dubbed a “monster” by one analyst, matched the former Whites fan-favourite for goals, whilst also posting a higher shot-on-target rate – showcasing his clinical edge in attacking areas.

He also completed more take-ons per 90, subsequently achieving a higher success rate, evidently a better dribbler than Summerville – something which has aided his efforts in the final third this season.

Whilst he’s only on loan in Yorkshire this campaign, supporters will be hoping that, regardless of which division they will be playing in next year, Solomon joins the club on a permanent basis.

Should he do so, the Israeli could well be the club’s next big-money sale, following in the footsteps of Summerville – having a huge impact on the first-team, whilst also pocketing a pretty penny in the process.

Even before the tour match began, West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite backed Chanderpaul to succeed at Test level.Chanderpaul’s dad carved out a decorated 164-Test career in which he averaged 51.4 and scored 30 centuries. His son now wants to make a name for himself.”I try and be myself,” Tagenarine said. “I can’t be him, so I can only be myself. Fingers crossed [I get picked for the first Test]. I’ll try to get some runs if I’m selected.”The PM’s XI added a further 25 runs to their overnight score of 297 for 9 before Mark Steketee was last man out for 15. Everton now battling to sign "powerful" Championship starlet after Alcaraz

Attempting to make a second late move in the January transfer window, Everton are now reportedly battling to sign a young Championship starlet ahead of Monday’s deadline.

Everton transfer news

Keeping their cards close to their chests, the Toffees swooped in seemingly out of nowhere to get their January business underway and secure a deal to loan Flamengo’s Carlos Alcaraz for the rest of the season. The former Southampton man returns to English football with unfinished business and could yet play a vital role in Everton’s Premier League survival.

The first signing of the Friedkin era and the first of David Moyes’ second stint in charge, Alcaraz could prove to be quite the coup with his move becoming permanent if he reaches certain goals in the remainder of the season.

However, those at Goodison Park may not be done there, with a matter of days remaining until the January window slams shut – leaving enough time for Friedkin to make their second move.

According to The Boot Room, Everton are now battling to sign Tom Watson from Sunderland after Brighton & Hove Albion saw a reported £2m offer turned down by the Black Cats.

Big Harrison upgrade: Everton offered "threat" on favourable terms

Whether the Toffees offer more than that £2m fee remains to be seen, but Watson is certainly a wanted man amid interest from Tottenham Hotspur, on top of the aforementioned clubs.

Still just 18 years old, the winger is one for the future and one who could yet spark Everton’s attack into life for years to come. As the deadline approaches and Sunderland battle to keep hold of the teenager, Everton could yet come swooping in.

"Powerful" Watson can replace Harrison

Everton’s pursuit of an exciting, young winger should come as no surprise amid Jack Harrison’s continued struggles. Despite never truly setting the world alight during his loan spell last season, the Toffees welcomed the winger back for a second loan spell, only to be left disappointed once again. Now, Friedkin and Moyes can welcome a more permanent solution in Watson.

The Sunderland ace is already impressing in senior football and has already earned the praise of manager Regis Le Bris, who told reporters (as relayed by BBC Sport) in December: “It was an interesting game for him. When you have a winger with the ability to run inside and outside and cross, it’s a gift for a coach and a team.

“He works well. The system is well-designed for him. We can use him very quickly and play to his main strengths. He’s powerful, he can dribble, he can move inside and outside and he scored. He’s very strong, a very good winger in this league.”

With two goals in 10 Championship appearances, Watson’s rise may just be getting underway as Premier League sides battle to secure his signature before the end of the January transfer window.

    WHAT EFL PUNDIT SAID

Former EFL star turned pundit David Prutton has told of Mullin’s situation: "As we saw when he first joined the club, dropping out of the EFL, he took a real chance and a gamble. Yes, you would say it was a well-paid gamble, but he's delivered the goals that have given the foundations of a side that has gotten itself into the Championship, which is a glorious thing to see.

"There would be an element of sentiment there, I don't think he would be used sentimentally. I think he's a player that is proven to be a very decent part of this Wrexham side. However, the Championship, as we know, is brutal. Wrexham, potentially, given their financial foundations, may want to think that – and this is casting no shade on Paul Mullin – they maybe want to look at someone more established from a Championship point of view, or someone dropping down from the Premier League.

"Undoubtedly, the story that's been created around them will make them a very, very attractive proposition for many players."
