Will Young, Luke Procter dig in as Northants banish memories of 2021 wipeout

Essex attack made to toil six months on from shortest Championship match of modern times

ECB Reporters Network28-Apr-2022Opener Will Young personified an obdurate batting performance by Northamptonshire on the first day of their LV= Insurance County Championship match at Chelmsford. The New Zealander followed up his match-saving 96 against Yorkshire last week with a painstaking 63 before Northants lost a clutch of late wickets to creep to 233 for 7 at the close.Young’s 100-run partnership for the second wicket with Emilio Gay set the tone for a day of frustration for the Essex attack. After Young became the second of Sam Cook’s two victims, the cudgels were taken up by Luke Procter, around whom Northants’ middle-order resistance was built. The left-hander will resume on Friday morning on 60 from 164 balls.Essex’s decision to put Northants in appeared to have been vindicated immediately when Ricardo Vasconcelos edged Cook’s third ball into the slip cordon. But thereafter, the Essex bowlers toiled on a benign strip that offered little before they finally parted Gay and Young, who dug in for a workmanlike 38-over partnership that had few frills, few thrills and even fewer chances. It became the story of the day.It was a far cry from Northants’ calamitous visit to Chelmsford last September that resulted in the shortest match of the modern four-day era: students of the unusual will remember that it finished half-an-hour into day two. This time, though, the visitors passed the 45 that constituted their second-innings total then inside 20 painstaking overs; the 81 of their 2021 first innings was overtaken with the first ball after lunch in an over where Young hit Shane Snater for three fours from alternate deliveries.Cook kept the pair in check in a seven-over opening spell in which the seamer conceded just eight runs, the only dent coming when Gay pulled him with supreme nonchalance to the boundary. The second-wicket stand had reached three-figures when it was finally broken. Snater got one to move away from Gay and Alastair Cook took the catch low down to his right at first slip.Young’s three-hour, 146-ball stay ended soon after when he shouldered arms to a ball from Cook that nipped back off the seam and trapped him lbw.Proctor and Rob Keogh put on 45 quietly and efficiently in 16 overs until the stroke of tea when Keogh prodded tentatively at a delivery from Matt Critchley that the bowler caught tumbling forward just above his boot-straps.Paul Walter, called in to replace loanee Adam Rossington, denied permission to play against his parent club, claimed the scalp of Saif Zaib with his rarely seen medium-pacers, pinned lbw shuffling across the stumps. Lewis McManus hung around for three-quarters of an hour for 7 before he wafted at one outside off stump from Snater and Simon Harmer pounced in front of Cook the elder at first slip to snaffle the catch. If Cook junior was the pick of the Essex bowlers with his two wickets, then the Australian Mark Steketee chose the fourth of his six-match stint to bowl his most controlled and impressive spell since he joined at the start of the season. The waywardness of Steketee’s first outing against Kent earlier in the month when he went for almost four runs an over was replaced by a parsimonious economy of 1.86. His efforts were finally rewarded when Harmer took a sharp one-handed catch at second slip to account for Tom Taylor just before stumps.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Multiple reports appear to suggest ex-Lazio boss Tudor will take the job before Juve's next game against Genoa. Fabrizio Romano believes the ex-Bianconeri defender has agreed a deal which could extend until 2026. Matteo Moretto's reporting appears to back this up, as he believes the Croatian's contract will automatically extend if he leads Juventus to Champions League qualification.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

In recent days, Juve had been linked with two other ex-players. Both Zinedine Zidane and Roberto Mancini were heavily linked with the position, although it now appears Tudor will return to the club. Juve currently sit in 5th place in Serie A.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Motta's Juve side have been a tough watch this season. Their back-to-back defeats to Atalanta and Fiorentina were just the second and third in the league this term. However, The Old Lady have drawn 13 of their 29 fixtures, the highest number of stalemates in the league.

    WHAT NEXT FOR JUVENTUS?

Irrespective of who is in the dugout, Juve will host Genoa next Saturday. Despite their turgid form, they sit just one point behind Motta's previous employer Bologna in fourth. It remains to be seen if that will be enough for Champions League qualification, however.

Allan Donald wants Bangladesh to focus on 'old-ball bowling' ahead of first Test against Sri Lanka

Allan Donald will have his work cut out this week as he prepares one of Bangladesh’s least experienced pace attacks for the Chattogram Test against Sri Lanka. The home side are missing their important spin duo in Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, apart from Taskin Ahmed, their most in-form fast bowler. The South African great, who joined Bangladesh’s coaching staff as the fast bowling coach in March, is focused on what is in front of him in his first home series. Ebadot Hossain is his most experienced fast bowler with 14 Tests, while Khaled Ahmed and Shoriful Islam have played eight between them. Rejaur Rahman Raja and Shohidul Islam are uncapped.Bangladesh have been training at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium since May 8. As a result, Donald knows about the resources he has got and is banking on the young pace attack’s ability to bowl reverse swing. Shorfiul, Khaled and Ebadot have already displayed their ability to work with the old ball in New Zealand and South Africa, so with a bit of time in hand, Donald expects things to fall into place.”The biggest thing here is old-ball bowling,” Donald said. “Today (May 12) was all about the old ball. Every training session, I have emphasised a lot on getting the ball to reverse, and be really patient and creative with the old ball. I don’t have to tell these lads about bowling on their conditions. They know what to expect. But the overall patience, and persistence, and creativity that we bring is going to be testing.”Donald is also mindful of an early impact, so he wants the bowlers to understand what they will be expected to do with the new ball. Regardless of the attack for the first Test, the gradual build-up of the fast bowlers’ spells will ultimately dictate how Bangladesh attacks Sri Lanka.”I have realised this week that your length needs to be a bit fuller with the new ball,” he said. “We have to get the best out of it in the first 30 overs. Getting Sri Lanka 40 for 3. The other thing is ball-conditioning. It is very sweaty and humid. Typical sub-continental conditions.”After 30 overs, how much patience and discipline we can show by building that pressure (will be crucial). When the ball gets old, the reverse swing issue needs to come in. So it is a step by step process. It is going to be testing. Discipline, mental and creativity is going to be huge.”Shoriful Islam has impressed Bangladesh fast bowling coach Allan Donald•Getty Images

Donald said that he is already impressed with the hunger of the Bangladesh fast bowling unit, particularly how they have stepped up in the last five months.”These kids want it, that’s the great thing. My way of coaching is mindset, mental, attitude and creativity. At this level, these things run (parallel). Every single training session is to buy into creating pressure.”Taskin has a heart of gold, he has a massive heart. Once he is back to lead the attack, we will see a lot more of the hunger. I am excited with what I have seen.”Donald remains confident that the likes of Shoriful, Ebadot and Khaled can repeat their impressive showing in overseas Tests,”I was really impressed with Shoriful especially in the one-dayers. I saw him in the U19 World Cup in South Africa. He was very impressive. He was already highly rated then when Bangladesh won the World Cup.I think the bigger surprise for me were Ebadot and Khaled. I was surprised by their engine capacity. Fast bowling is about huge guts and determination. I have never seen two spinners and two seamers in a Test match before, but the way they conducted themselves, especially in Durban where they were magnificent. Apart from one mad half hour that knocked us back, I thought by bowling South Africa out in both Tests was a fantastic effort.”I am delighted with what I have seen. I think the discussions that we had in every single training session, and the learning we get out of it, is substantial. I am pleased with where we are going,” he said.

£78m duo miss out through injury: Arsenal predicted lineup vs Man United

Arsenal are back. So some would proclaim anyway. Over the last three matches, Mikel Arteta’s side have scored a combined haul of 13 goals.

It’s amazing what happens when Martin Odegaard is in your team, isn’t it? The skipper missed a 12-game period after the first international break of the season and during that run, the Gunners rather fell off a cliff.

A rugged period between October and November’s international break saw Arsenal fail to win a Premier League game and that means they’re now nine points behind league leaders Liverpool, even if they did hold them to a 2-2 draw.

That said, Manchester United on Wednesday evening are likely to provide a far tougher test than the likes of Nottingham Forest and West Ham United.

As it happens, they’re now managed by Ruben Amorim who used to coach the Sporting team that Arsenal so ruthlessly dispatched in the Champions League a week ago.

The last time Arsenal played Manchester United at the Emirates

“Gabriel Jesus, he’s sat down one, and he’s won the game!” The roar from Peter Drury was glorious if you are an Arsenal supporter.

What a game this was back in September 2023. Arteta’s side needed a big win early in the Premier League campaign and that’s precisely what they got, defeating their old rivals 3-1 at the Emirates.

gabriel-jesus-arsenal-alexandre-lacazette-transfer-arteta-edu-lyon

They were made to work incredibly hard for it, however. Marcus Rashford opened the scoring on 27 minutes before Odegaard hit back just a minute later.

We had to wait until injury time for the game to be decided though. That wasn’t before Alejandro Garnacho scored but saw his strike cruelly disallowed, a goal dear old Erik ten Hag probably still suggests was onside to this day.

Alas, the rub of the green was not with the Red Devils on that sunny afternoon. In the 96th minute, the ball fell to mega-money summer arrival Declan Rice at the back home who lashed home via a deflection for his first goal in Arsenal colours.

Off he went, darting away towards the corner flag, engulfed by his teammates. What a moment. The Emirates was bedlam.

The match was then decided in the 101st minute. The hosts broke from a corner through the lesser-spotted Fabio Vieira. He slid in Jesus who cooly sat Diogo Dalot down before sticking the ball past Andre Onana.

Arsenal will hope for a slightly less dramatic affair on Wednesday but they will take three points in any way they come as they look to chase down Liverpool.

Arsenal team and injury news

The North London side may have Odegaard back in the fold but this doesn’t look like a fully fit squad just yet.

The big news we await concerns defensive stalwart Gabriel Magalhaes. The Brazilian took a blow to the face at the London Stadium, an incident that saw him win a penalty for his side.

That being said, he was withdrawn at half-time with Arsenal citing management of the knock he picked up in Lisbon a few days prior.

Mikel Merino and Thomas Partey were both absent from the matchday squad against West Ham and could miss out again. Merino sat out last time owing to a knee injury while Partey’s issue was described as muscular, meaning the £33m and £45m signings are both doubts.

While their involvement remains more uncertain, full-backs Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu definitely remain out.

Arsenal's predicted lineup vs Manchester United

With Merino and Partey still doubts for Wednesday evening’s clash, it means a relatively unchanged team is likely to take to the field at the Emirates.

The undisputed number one, David Raya, maintains his place between the sticks and providing Gabriel is fit after Saturday evening’s substitution, will have an unchanged defence in front of him.

Jorginho shone in the win at the former Olympic Stadium and deserves to keep his place next to Declan Rice.

There might be claims for Kai Havertz to be rested but after scoring in consecutive fixtures he starts ahead of Jesus again.

The only change to the starting lineup will see Leandro Trossard drop out. Like Havertz, the Belgian has scored in successive outings but with Gabriel Martinelli waiting in the wings and ready to torment United’s defence with his pace, this feels like an ideal match for the Brazilian.

Worth more than Duran: Emery struck gold selling "amazing" Aston Villa star

Aston Villa will be looking to pile on the Manchester City misery when the two sides face off in the Premier League this coming weekend.

Pep Guardiola’s men are going through an unusual crisis at this moment in time, with eight defeats picked up from their last 11 outings in all competitions, as Unai Emery’s men now wait eagerly to try to add insult to injury by inflicting another loss onto the reigning top-flight champions just before Christmas.

Emery will likely stick with Jhon Duran as the lone striker for this big clash at Villa Park, safe in the knowledge that the potent Colombian could cause the leaky Man City defence all sorts of bother.

Duran's continued Villa heroics

After all, the Villa hotshot has started his side’s last two Premier League clashes after only being utilised as an impact man off the substitutes bench prior.

He has justified those starts, with two goals picked up from his last two top-flight contests, which included this consolation header finding the back of the net last time out in a slender 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest.

As is stated above, that took Duran’s goal total for the season all the way up to 11, as Ollie Watkins begins to worry his once concrete first team spot is no longer so solid with the clinical 21-year-old around.

Amazingly, despite the ex-Chicago Fire striker’s value increasing all the way up to £33m off the back of these heroics – as per Transfermarkt – one former Villa man’s value stands higher than that right now, despite failing to settle in his fresh environment.

Aston Villa midfielderDouglas Luiz.

The former Aston Villa man now worth more than Duran

The player in question here is Douglas Luiz, who sealed a move away from the Villans this summer when Serie A giants Juventus forked out in the region of £42m to land his services.

Arsenal were also known admirers at one point looking at the Brazilian, but Thiago Motta’s men would be the side to cough up that sizeable fee in the end, after he had become a reliable mainstay at Villa.

He would instantly fit in at Villa Park after a spell in Spain with Girona, with three goals and three assists picked up as a daring midfield option during his debut season on English shores.

The 18-time senior Brazil international would only get better from this point on, with a further 19 goals and 17 assists accumulated across his lengthy 204 game stay in the West Midlands, as Emery even singled out the star as being “amazing” last year when rumours begin to circulate he could leave Villa behind.

Yet, despite the Spaniard waxing lyrical, Emery would have to deal with the heartbreak of losing his midfield ace when Juventus eventually came calling.

Now, with hindsight a very fine thing, Luiz should have stayed put at a club that clearly adored him, as he’s found his transition to playing in Turn extremely choppy.

Only starting two games for Juventus in league action so far, it’s clear from the table above the high standards Luiz was playing to at Villa have now escaped him, with injuries also troubling him in Italy to date.

Villa are the clear winners here overall, having banked that £42m wisely, with the likes of Youri Tielemans, Boubacar Kamara and Amadou Onana all also shining in central midfield in their former star-man’s absence.

The South American’s value still stands high above even Duran at the £37m mark, so not all hope will be lost that he can return to his tenacious best soon for Juventus, but he certainly would have envisaged the start of his career at the Old Lady to have gone smoother.

Rahane opens up on racism from Sydney crowd: 'Told umpires we won't play till they take action'

Ashwin lauds “courageous” Siraj for bringing up the issue to a “wider section of people” during the SCG Test

S Sudarshanan01-Jun-2022It was almost a year-and-a-half ago, but the memories – and scars – are fresh, of Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah being racially abused by spectators during the Sydney Test.”[We] insisted on getting the abusers out of the ground,” Ajinkya Rahane, India’s captain then in the absence of Virat Kohli, recalls telling the umpires, while R Ashwin feels Siraj, especially, showed courage in making people aware of what was going on.After the end of the third day’s play in that New Year’s Day Test, the Indian players spoke to the match officials about the abuse that had been hurled at them, and when it continued the next morning, the Indians alerted the umpires. Play was suspended for ten minutes, and a group of people were evicted from the stands before the game could continue.Rahane revealed that the umpires – Paul Reiffel and Paul Wilson – had asked the players to go back to the dressing room if they didn’t want to play, but India insisted on getting the spectators ejected and carrying on with the Test.”When Siraj again came to me [on the fourth day, after being abused the day before], I told the umpires that [they] need to take action and we won’t play till then,” Rahane said on the sidelines of an event in Mumbai on Wednesday to launch , a documentary on that series that India won 2-1 in dramatic circumstances, which will air on streaming service Voot Select later this month.”The umpires said that you can’t stall the game and can walk out if you want. We said that we are here to play and not sit in the dressing room and insisted on getting the abusers out of the ground. It was important to support our colleague given the situation he had been through. What happened in Sydney was completely wrong.”Although the evicted spectators were cleared of any wrongdoing by Cricket Australia, the incident left a bad taste in the mouth.”Personally I think Adelaide and Melbourne weren’t as bad. But this has been a continuous thing at Sydney. I have experienced it as well. They do tend to get nasty,” Ashwin had said after playing a heroic hand with the bat, in the company of Hanuma Vihari, to help India draw that Test.Addressing a general discussion on racism in sport, Ashwin said on Wednesday, “I don’t think it has anything to do with a particular section of people in a particular country. Everywhere people do believe that they belong to a majority sort of a thing and they will have their way. And I think racism is one tip of it, where people believe that is a way of differentiation with someone. The only solution is better parenting and better awareness.”Yes, it happened at that ground [SCG] and at that place [Australia] a lot more. But it was courageous of him [Siraj] to bring it up so at least a wider section of people know and the people sitting next to such people in the ground do better next time.”It is something one must condemn. But I want to bring it up that everywhere people are differentiating people on different grounds, which is not right.”

Mohsin, Krunal help Lucknow Super Giants consolidate play-off position

Rabada’s four-for in vain as Kings crash to fifth loss in nine games

Matt Roller29-Apr-20222:12

Vettori believes Howell should’ve got a look in

Krunal Pandya sucked the life out of Punjab Kings’ run chase, leading the way with the ball as Lucknow Super Giants defended 153 to consolidate their play-off position.Kings had made a solid start to their chase, reaching 46 for 1 off the powerplay to take their requirement down to 108 off 14 overs with nine wickets in hand, an equation that should have proved relatively straightforward. But after Ravi Bishnoi removed Shikhar Dhawan, Krunal’s spell of 2 for 11 from his four overs meant that the asking rate climbed and forced Kings’ batters to take risks on a sticky, two-paced pitch. Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone and Rishi Dhawan showed brief glimpses of their hitting ability but all struggled for fluency as Kings ended up 20 runs short.Lucknow’s total of 153 owed much to an 85-run stand between Quinton de Kock and Deepak Hooda for the second wicket, the only partnership of more than 35 in the match. They collapsed through the middle overs, losing five wickets for 13 runs, but late blows from Dushmantha Chameera and Mohsin Khan ensured they finished with a defendable total.Krunal Pandya made a telling contribution with the ball•BCCI

Krunal’s star turnAndy Flower has often packed his teams with allrounders during his two-and-a-half years on the franchise circuit and his Lucknow side have taken his T20 philosophy to its extreme: they had nine bowling options in their side for this game, with Avesh Khan returning from injury to replace Manish Pandey in the playing XI.Krunal has been a beneficiary of that style, required as a bowler only when conditions or match-ups have suited. With the final ball of his first over, he dismissed Punjab’s only remaining left-handed batter in their top seven, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, when his arm ball found a leading edge and looped up into the covers. That enabled him to wheel away against their right-handers, conceding only four runs off the bat in his final three overs and trapping Jitesh Sharma lbw. When his spell was finished, Punjab needed 62 off 36 balls with five wickets left and with the out-of-form Bairstow their only frontline batter left standing. When his thick edge off Chameera flew to deep third, it was inevitable that Krunal was the man diving forward to take the catch and seal the game.Across IPL 2022, Krunal has taken nine wickets with an economy rate of 6.18, bowling three overs per game on average. His record against right-handers is even better, eight wickets with an economy rate of 5.51 an over; Rajapaksa was the first left-hander he had dismissed this season.Kings have struggled badly against left-arm spin all season and will be now targeted with it in their final five group games. Krunal ended with 2 for 11 and the only cheaper four-over spell this season was also by a left-arm spinner against Punjab: Axar Patel’s 2 for 10 at Brabourne.Hooda, de Kock start brightlyLucknow’s top order looked vulnerable early on as they struggled to adjust to the nature of the pitch with Kagiso Rabada inducing an outside edge from KL Rahul, who fell for 6 in his first appearance against the Punjab franchise since he left them at the end of last season. De Kock laid into him with consecutive sixes, but they managed only 39 off the powerplay.Hooda made a false start, reaching 3 off 12 balls and struggling for control, but sixes off Rishi Dhawan and Livingstone got things moving in the middle of the innings. With de Kock firing too, Lucknow were loading up for the back end before Sandeep Sharma – who bowled out early and finished with 1 for 18 from his four – found de Kock’s outside edge to break the stand.Super Giants’ slideFrom 98 for 1, Lucknow collapsed to 111 for 6 and then 126 for 7. Bairstow, who has primarily been used as a specialist batter rather than a keeper, ran Hooda out with a brilliant direct hit from deep backward square leg before Rabada struck twice in his third over, with Krunal and Ayush Badoni both caught attempting boundaries off hard length balls.Rahul Chahar caught Marcus Stoinis off his own bowling and had Jason Holder taken at deep extra cover, but Mohsin (once off Chahar) and Chameera (twice off Rabada) hit crucial sixes at the death, dragging Lucknow up to 153.Mohsin Khan has been one of the surprise packages for Lucknow Super Giants•BCCI

Mohsin catches the eyeMohsin Khan’s signing for INR 20 lakh slipped under the radar at the mega-auction but his left-arm angle has offered Lucknow’s attack a crucial point of difference. A tall 23-year-old seamer from Uttar Pradesh, he has only played one first-class game but his pace in the powerplay and slower balls through the middle and at the death marked him out as another exciting local prospect. He took the key wicket of Livingstone with the first ball of his third over, giving him no pace to work with as he shuffled across to play a premeditated scoop, then made certain of the win with two tail-end wickets in his fourth to finish with 3 for 24 and ice Lucknow’s victory.
