'USMNT will win a World Cup' – Apple TV analyst Maurice Edu on national team's potential, Cavan Sullivan's 'borderline arrogance' and 'global shop window' of MLS

The former USMNT star joined Mic'd Up to discuss the upcoming MLS season, his love of the game and U.S. World Cup dreams

The plan was for Maurice Edu to sit down with GOAL for 20 minutes to talk MLS. That's not what happened. Things snowballed quickly. That's what happens when Edu gets talking about soccer – sometimes he just gets lost in the moment.

So that 20 minutes turned into an hour and a half. Talk about MLS turned into talk about his love of Arsenal, his respect for DeMarcus Beasley and his dream of someday going to Europe and celebrating a U.S. men's national team World Cup triumph right in the faces of anyone who ever doubted.

Around the 50-minute mark, Edu finally gets to the heart of it all. He finally finds a way to explain why, after all of these years of dedicating his life to soccer, he still loves talking about this stuff so much.

"I use the word 'pure' because there isn't a better description," he says. "That's what it is. There's nothing external. You're just going and playing because you love it. You're good at it, sure, but you still get lost in the moment. When you get older, playing professionally, that still happens and you put pressure on yourself. There are more consequences, but I still love it when the game feels pure."

He felt that love as a player during a career that took him to a World Cup alongside club stops in Canada, Scotland, England and Turkey. He feels it now, too, as an analyst for MLS Season Pass on AppleTV. Edu loves watching the American game grow.

"I have to be on so often that, when I get that opportunity to just watch a game and be a fan… Man, I try as much as I can to just enjoy it," he says. "You can't ever lose that. Obviously, it's difficult but, man, when I'm calling games, if there was a camera on me, you'll see I'm still in the moment."

Edu weighed in on the upcoming MLS season, his thoughts on the league's young stars and his USMNT dreams in the latest edition of Mic'd Up, a recurring feature in which GOAL U.S. taps into the perspective of broadcasters, analysts and other pundits on the state of soccer in the U.S. and abroad.

GOAL: The MLS season is nearly upon us. Somehow it's felt more chaotic than usual. There have been big coaching changes, big signings and big sales. It seems that the league is a bit more open than ever. Is that how you feel about things after this offseason? What are you looking forward to seeing?

EDU: I think the biggest thing going into any season for me is who the defending champion is, and how they respond to that. That's the Galaxy, and they have a direct rival, LAFC. What's their response? You've seen a power shift in the league since LAFC's entrance where they've been top dog and have taken that market share in LA, right? During that time, the LA Galaxy were going through a rough patch. This year, the LA Galaxy climbed back and they did it in impressive fashion. I'm excited to see where the Galaxy go from here. Obviously, Riqui Puig will miss the start of the season, so how do they fill that void but, then, looking across the city, how does LAFC respond?

Inter Miami will always have a spotlight on them, and rightfully so because they have the best player that's ever played the game in Lionel Messi. They have [Javier] Mascherano as head coach now, yo. If we're talking about coaches, I'm intrigued to see how this coaching carousel plays out now that that's done. And we have some big coaches like Rony Deila in Atlanta, and he's already won an MLS Cup with NYCFC. Gregg Berhalter in Chicago, a club that needs a revival.

Bruce Arena, that's another one. He's gone to San Jose and already shaken things up. When Bruce wen to New England, they were in a similar situation where no one was talking about them. It's a tall task, but if there's someone who can do that with San Jose, you'd be a fool to bet against Bruce.

GOAL: There's just so much starpower in the league now, and it's gotten to a point where Charlotte FC can sign Wilfried Zaha and people don't even bat an eye. Signings like that would have been league-altering a decade ago and now it feels like every team can go out and do that.

EDU: I'm excited about where the league is right now. Charlotte can get Zaha and that's obviously ambitious from their standpoint as they bring in a top, top player. But last year, LAFC brought in [Olivier] Giroud and Hugo Lloris. These are World Cup winners in the league. You have the best player that's ever played the game in Messi playing with all of his boys in Miami. The league is also in a place where they're selling players, like Diego Gomez going to Brighton, right? It all speaks to the global visibility of the league. You're constantly in a shop window. The Cucho Hernandez story is incredible, too. How does Columbus replace him?

I love the fact that there are players creating a space for themselves. The conversation is just as much about foreign transfers as the American players and how they're developing and growing. For years, we've been talking about why you can't just buy a player within the league, and you're already seeing that happen, too. There's wheeling and dealing and, now, as we get to the first game of the season, we're just getting to the exciting part.

The reality is you can't sit still anymore. I keep talking about global exposure, and you don't want to be the team left sitting there while everyone else gets better. That's on-field production, fanbase, atmosphere… everything. You can't be the one team left out or sitting on your hands. It puts pressure on teams to assemble something.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesON AMERICAN SOCCER'S RISING STARS

GOAL: One thing that's always a talking point with MLS is the league's rising stars. Not long ago, you were that guy: No. 1 pick, highly-rated and, ultimately, headed to Europe. Obviously so much has changed, but when you look at the rising stars in this league, how do you assess them?

EDU: First of all, a lot has changed since my day. The opportunities have now heightened in a way that I can't describe. One, MLS as a league has grown and there's a lot more conversation and talk and eyeballs even before the Apple deal. Now, when you factor in Apple, you're in a global shop window. Every game, people can see you. Messi is here, too, so just have the attention on the league. That, in tandem with the national team having players have success in Europe, that puts a spotlight on the U.S. market. You put it all together and then fast forward to all of these massive moves and you see that there is opportunity for these young players.

It's one that, if I had it when I was a young player, I'd salivate at that. If you have success here, you're not worried about "Is a scout watching?" or "How can I make sure people see my game?" If you're doing well, you're going to be seen. It makes me excited, man. I'm excited because the level is better now. Players in this league now play at a level that better prepares them for that jump, which is a whole process because it does start from scratch when you get to Europe.

Maybe they can break into teams a little bit quicker because they've earned that. There's a little bit more respect given and more trust in our players. You still have to be ready when your name gets called, but this is a great time to be playing. Guys like Diego Luna, Jack McGlynn, Obed Vargas… these are players within the league that we've been talking about

GOAL:You moved to Europe at a young age. People don't realize how hard that is. Obviously it helps that you moved to a club like Rangers, that has everything together, but what do you remember about your decision to go to Europe and what that time period was like for you?

EDU: The biggest part that was helpful for me was that DeMarcus Beasley was there. He's a guy I knew from the national team and a guy I looked up to. He helped me so much in just settling on and off the pitch. At Toronto FC, I was one of the first names on the team sheet. I had just broken into the national team, had gone to the Olympics, so I was used to playing every game.

You go to Europe and you're not always playing and you're like, "What the hell did I sign up for?" That took a bit of time, but it was valuable to have Beas there because I could pick his brain. Nowadays, there are more resources that help make the situation smoother, but it still forces you to mature and grow. If you're a young kid, you'll have to grow up relatively quickly. It's all part of the process and it makes the journey more rewarding when you do have success.

USA Today ImagesON CAVAN SULLIVAN

GOAL: You mentioned rising stars there, so I have to ask about Cavan Sullivan. There's just so much hype and pressure, but he doesn't seem too phased by it. When he's on the field, he never looks out of place, which is a compliment to a player that's so much younger than everyone else on the field. What do you see in him and what do you make of everything that's happening with him at his age?

EDU: Cavan, to me, is like Freddy [Adu] to me when I was coming up. I remember Freddy was three years younger than me, and I remember the first time I saw him play. I never thought he was younger because everyone was like "Who is this kid?" It was ridiculous what he was doing. You see the talent there and then you start seeing that talent against grown men. Obviously there were challenges physically, but you could tell he was a footballer. I see similarities in Cavan. I don't want to put too much pressure on him and make that kind of comparison because maybe it is unfair. I want him to go down his own path, but the talent is there.

Man City recognized that and made the move. He seems to have – and top, top players have this – a persona of confidence that's borderline arrogance. He comes off the bench and he's not coming off think he needs to fit in. He plays like it's no different than the game he played just a few days ago for his MLS Next Pro team. He gets the ball and tries to do the same thing in that game with the professionals. He has no fear. I love that. He has his brother Quinn, and I think it's important for him to have someone he can trust, someone who can check you at times. That's so valuable for a young kid. This league is littered with young talent, man, and, again the opportunity is in front of them. It's enormous.

GOAL: You obviously had a big national team career and got to live those moments at the highest level. Now, you have that first-row seat to what these guys are doing now. What's it like watching the USMNT once your playing career is over? Does it feel different?

EDU: Before anything else, I was a fan. As a young kid, I wanted to play for the national team because I was a fan. When I fell in love with the sport, I had my club team I supported, Arsenal, but before anything, I was a fan of the national team watching the World Cup in 1994 and then seeing the young guys like Beas and Landon [Donovan]. I remember just thinking that I wanted to do that, to experience that. Fortunately, I was able to.

The passion, as a fan, is heightened when you wear the shirt. When you become part of it, it's a different level of pride because you feel a part of it in a different way. Now, I still feel like I'm a part of that fraternity. Guys paved the way for me, and I hope my generation paved the way for this group that is playing and doing its thing. When I watch, I'm a fan first and foremost.

I want them to have success. I want to walk around abroad wearing a Tyler Adams or Christian Pulisic or Weston McKennie or Mark McKenzie jersey and talk sh*t to someone in England or Italy or France because we just won the World Cup. That's my dream. When I watch them, I watch them through that lens because I desperately want them to be successful. I want them to fulfill that potential. I want this group to succeed and the next group and the group after that.

GOAL: Everyone on the outside always compares generations but, when you actually see guys interacting, it doesn't seem like there's any animosity or jealousy. Jozy Altidore was at USMNT camp in the fall, and so many players made sure to go show him love. That has to be special as a member of that fraternity.

EDU: I want all of the guys after me to be Hall of Famers. I want these guys to be the best we've ever seen but, at the same time, I do love the dynamic. You have to bet on yourself. If you ask me if I think my generation can beat this generation, I'll always say yes. If you ask any athlete that question, they better say that. If not, I can't trust you. They might be a better team on paper but, if you asked me when I was on Philly if we could beat Barcelona, one thousand percent they were better than us, but I'll always bet on myself.

Someday, though, the USMNT will win a World Cup and, when that moment comes, you won't be able to tell me anything at that point. I'll be all over the world celebrating.

Got Bauer instead: Celtic once wanted to sign £29m star in the making

Celtic went into the international break off the back of a 2-1 win over Ross County in Dingwall after coming from behind in the Scottish Premiership fixture.

They found themselves 1-0 down at the break after a penalty, thanks to a handball from Liam Scales, was converted by Ronan Vale for the hosts.

Brendan Rodgers’ side rallied in the second half, though, and right-back Alistair Johnston was pivotal to their comeback, scoring the equaliser and assisting the winner from Nicolas Kuhn.

As you can see in the table above, the Canada international has enjoyed a stunning start to the 2024/25 campaign in the league for the Hoops so far, with his quality as a scorer and a creator of goals.

The 26-year-old star will now be hoping to maintain his impressive run of form for as long as possible to help his side to win plenty of trophies this season.

He has, as proven by his performances this term, been a fantastic signing at right-back for Celtic. There have been a fair few flops in that position for the Scottish giants, however, and one of them was Moritz Bauer.

Mortiz Bauer's time with Celtic

In the summer of 2019, Neil Lennon swooped to sign the 26-year-old right-back on a season-long loan deal from Championship side Stoke City.

It was reported by The BBC that the Bhoys had an option to make the move permanent in the summer of 2020, although it was not revealed how much that would have cost them.

He had joined the Potters midway through the 2017/18 campaign and made 15 appearances in the Premier League, as they were relegated from the top-flight, before featuring in just eight matches in the second tier the following season.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon.

Alarm bells may have been ringing when Bauer admitted in his first interview that he is “not the most talented” player, although he added that his “hard work” makes up for it.

The Austrian defender went on to play just 13 matches in all competitions for the Premiership giants during the 2019/20 campaign on loan at Parkhead, with nine of those appearances coming in the league.

Bauer was also an unused substitute on 16 occasions in all competitions that term, as Jeremie Frimpong emerged as the first-choice option at right-back.

Former Celtic defender Jeremie Frimpong.

Ultimately, Celtic opted against triggering their option to sign the Stoke loanee permanently, and he moved on from Glasgow at the end of that season, with just 13 games for the club in total.

Things could have been so different for the Hoops, though, if they had landed one of their alternative targets to Bauer in the summer of 2019 – Reece James.

Celtic's interest in Reece James

Ahead of the 2019/20 campaign, a transfer document that detailed a number of the club’s targets for the summer transfer window in 2019 was leaked.

Versatile Chelsea defender Reece James was one of the names on the list, as the Scottish giants were keen on bringing him to Parkhead to bolster Lennon’s squad.

It did not specify whether they were keen on a loan or a permanent deal for the English youngster, who had just spent the season on loan with Wigan Athletic in the Championship.

As you can see in the table above, James, who was deployed at right-back and in central midfield, caught the eye with 12 ‘big chances’ created in 45 league appearances in the English second tier.

He had yet to make his senior bow for Chelsea and Celtic may have felt as though they had a chance of luring him to the Premiership to continue his development in Scotland, whether that was on loan for a year or on a long-term basis.

One that got away

The transfers that nearly happened but never did. This article is part of Football FanCast's One That Got Away series.

Ultimately, however, the Blues appointed Frank Lampard as their new head coach and he decided to integrate James, alongside the likes of Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, and Fikayo Tomori, into the first-team in the 2019/20 campaign, which meant that he was not available to the Hoops – or any other club – in 2019.

Reece James' current market value

At the time of writing (11/10/2024), the 24-year-old star is valued at a whopping €35m (£29m) by Transfermarkt, having been worth €7m (£6m) in the summer of 2019 when Celtic were interested in signing him.

James, who was once hailed as a “brilliant” player who has “everything” by Ian Wright, went on to play 37 games for Chelsea in all competitions during the 2019/20 campaign, including six matches in the Champions League.

Reece James for Chelsea.

He followed that up with five assists in 47 outings in all competitions the following season, with ten games in the Champions League on the club’s way to winning the competition.

To date, James has produced 11 goals and 22 assists in 158 appearances for the Blues in his senior career at Stamford Bridge, since the Hoops were interested in signing him just over five years ago.

Unfortunately, though, the England international has also missed a staggering 119 competitive matches for club and country through injury in that time, as he has consistently struggled to remain fit and available for a significant length of time. In the last three full seasons, James has been absent for at least 20 games.

Despite his injury woes, the 24-year-old gem has been capped 16 times by England and his current market value being £29m still shows that he has enjoyed a terrific career since his loan at Wigan in the Championship.

James has established himself, when fit, as a top player and a valuable asset in the Premier League, and he still has plenty of years left ahead of him to get over his injury issues and truly flourish as a consistent and regular performer for Chelsea at the top level.

Despite his fitness problems, Celtic will surely still regret not signing the defender in the summer of 2019 and landing Bauer instead, as James has gone on to soar in value whilst the Stoke loanee struggled at Parkhead.

Celtic have found their new Jota in "magical" Hoops star

The Hoops star has enjoyed a phenomenal start to the 2024/25 campaign.

Former MCC and SACA chief executive Keith Bradshaw dies aged 58

South Australia Cricket Association chief executive and former Marylebone Cricket Club CEO Keith Bradshaw has passed away after a long illness at the age of 58.Bradshaw had been SACA CEO since November 2011 having previously been the first non-Englishman to hold the role of secretary and chief executive officer of the MCC, having been appointed to the position in 2006.He also played 25 first-class matches for Tasmania between 1984 and 1988 as a middle-order batter and made two Sheffield Shield centuries before retiring to begin a career in the private sector with Price Waterhouse and Deloitte.Bradshaw had quietly battled incurable cancer, multiple myeloma, over more than a decade but had managed to fulfil his duties at the MCC and the SACA playing a major role in the development of pink-ball day-night cricket, with Adelaide Oval becoming the first venue globally to host a pink-ball Test. The ground has since become synonymous with day-night Test cricket. Bradshaw also oversaw the major redevelopment of Adelaide Oval during the early part of his tenure at the SACA.Cricket Australia’s interim chairman Richard Freudenstein paid tribute to Bradshaw on Tuesday.”Although many within the cricket family were aware that Keith was battling a serious long-term illness, the news of his passing at such a young age is devasting for cricket and all who had the good fortune to know him,” Freudenstein said.”Keith’s contribution to cricket in Australia and the UK cannot be understated. His legacy is an ongoing testament to a lifetime of achievement in the game.”His great skill as a cricket administrator was to be an innovator yet appreciate and understand the importance of tradition. He had the clearest of vision when it came to strategy and yet the lightest of touch when it came to empowering his staff to carry it out.”He fought his long-term illness with courage and fortitude and despite whatever he was going through, he always had a smile and lots of time for everyone he met.”Cricket will be much the poorer for his passing and myself and everyone at Cricket Australia send our love and thoughts to his fiancé Helen, children Juliet, Eliza, Donald and Jack and son-in-law Patrick at this time.”

Western Australia Premier's hardline stance adds further doubt to Perth Ashes Test

Players’ wives and girlfriends would not be able to make the trip while broadcast crews are also an issue

AAP30-Nov-2021Perth’s hopes of hosting the fifth Ashes Test have taken another big hit after Western Australia Premier Mark McGowan reiterated his hardline stance on quarantine rules and banned players’ wives and girlfriends for the trip west. The 60,000-seat Optus Stadium is slated to host the Ashes finale from January 14. Earlier this month, McGowan said he was “very confident” the Test match would go ahead, despite it coming just five days after the conclusion of the SCG Test.At that stage, it was believed McGowan was considering relaxing the Covid-19 quarantine rules that players would have to adhere to given the Test match would be played just weeks before WA was due to throw open its borders. But in a dramatic turn over the past week, the emergence of the new Omicron variant has complicated matters. On Saturday, WA Cricket chief executive Christina Matthews said the prospect of Perth hosting the fifth Test had gone from 97 percent to 50 percent. Matthews said one of the major stumbling blocks was the sheer size of the broadcast team and the subsequent quarantine complications that would bring.Related

Any chance of players being able to complete a shortened quarantine period instead of the regular 14-day stint was rejected by McGowan on Tuesday. The same hardline rules will also apply to any staff members or broadcast workers coming across. That means all members who fly to Perth will be under strict quarantine conditions throughout the entirety of the Test match – a situation that may not be feasible.”We have put in place very strict rules,” McGowan said. “So we’ve said to them, ‘you need to have 14 days quarantine’. And that has to apply to all the broadcast staff, the cricket staff.”They can’t just bring wives and girlfriends with them – same rules as we put in place for the AFL. It’s up to them whether they want to adhere to those rules or not.”The MCG is the frontrunner to host the fifth Test – possibly under lights – if Perth is stripped. But the SCG is ready and willing to host the Test if required. Tasmania have previously pushed hard to host but has a much smaller capacity.”We’ve said to Cricket Australia that we’re here to help if they need it,” NSW minister for tourism Stuart Ayres said. “I would love to see Perth host a Test match. That community over there has had to live behind a very closed border for a long time. So they deserve to have some fantastic sporting content.”But if the West Australian government doesn’t want that to happen, then NSW is ready to help Cricket Australia.”

Forget Szmodics: McKenna should unleash sensational Ipswich ace instead

Ipswich Town and Wolverhampton Wanderers are now the only two cursed teams in the Premier League yet to pick up a win this season, but the Tractor Boys were moments away from a rare victory over the weekend.

Jordan Ayew’s 94th-minute equaliser killed the mood around Portman Road after the Suffolk masses were sent into raptures when Leif Davis’ beautifully taken strike rippled the net, as Kieran McKenna’s underdogs continue to hunt down an elusive three points ten games into the campaign now.

McKenna will be contemplating what direction to go in with his starting lineups with Sammie Szmodics in danger of dropping out of his XI for the upcoming trip to Tottenham Hotspur in the league.

Szmodics' form this season

The world must have been expected of Szmodics when he put pen to paper on a move to the newly promoted side this summer, having just been fresh off a golden boot-winning season with Blackburn Rovers in the Championship.

That Midas touch in front of goal for the Riversiders hasn’t really been visible on his new patch yet, with the 29-year-old sharpshooter only bagging two strikes from ten top-flight contests to date at his new employers, compared next to his blistering goal-haul of 27 in the second tier.

Of course, Szmodics was the focal point of the Blackburn attack and was extremely comfortable in his role at Ewood Park, often operating as a central attacking midfield option behind the lone centre-forward.

In Suffolk, however, the Republic of Ireland international has regularly been shoehorned into his manager’s main lineup down the left wing, which has seen the once venomous forward recede into his shell and fade in and out of contests.

That was very apparent last game when Szmodics only managed 20 touches of the ball as the contest passed him by, leading to him not surviving the full 90 minutes.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The player who could replace Szmodics

The first port of call in terms of changes moving forward could be to freshen up the options on the left flank, therefore, with one face well suited to take over from the underperforming 29-year-old, having been a star for Ipswich all the way through their unbelievable rise to the top-flight.

The player in question here is Nathan Broadhead, who is yet to get going this season for McKenna’s men after suffering a hamstring injury in pre-season.

Yet, with the Ipswich number 33 now seemingly back in his manager’s plans with a spot on the substitutes bench in his team’s last three Premier League clashes, he could soon be unleashed as an attacking talent who can catch top-flight defences off-guard.

The Welshman was key in Ipswich managing to pull off back-to-back promotions, with 13 goals and five assists picked up from 41 games in all competitions last term, linking up well with Conor Chaplin in the process.

Chaplin has recently worked his way into McKenna’s starting XI, with the ex-Barnsley man displaying spurts of his quality during the disappointing 1-1 draw with Leicester last time out, firing three efforts at Mads Hermansen’s goal.

Chaplin is another lively member of McKenna’s camp who was instrumental in Ipswich rising up to the Premier League, having amassed the same number of goals as Broadhead last season, on top of registering nine assists.

Whilst the Ipswich boss has attempted to play Omari Hutchinson in this number ten spot, and has attempted to get the best out of Szmodics as a left winger, a back-to-basics approach might be the best way forward, which could see his trusty EFL performers in Chaplin and Broadhead link up soon in England’s top division.

The 11 biggest wins in Premier League history

These are some of the heaviest drubbings the league has ever seen.

ByRoss Kilvington Nov 13, 2024 6 Tottenham 6-4 Reading, December 2007 Four-goal Berbatov steals the show

Dimitar Berbatov for Spurs.

In a game that ended 6-4 to Tottenham Hotspur, the most surprising fact is that Reading were level with the north Londoners at 1-1 when the break arrived. It was, for those 45 minutes, like any other Saturday afternoon fixture.

But Dimitar Berbatov’s seventh-minute opener, followed by Kalifa Cisse’s equaliser just nine minutes later, were by no means signs of what was to come.

At one stage, Reading were even on course to seal the points, only for Berbatov to cancel the Royals out not once but twice on his way to a hat-trick.

After Ivar Ingimarsson struck, the forward first levelled things up to make it 2-2 before Dave Kitson’s effort forced the Bulgarian to take matters into his own hands yet again with arguably the finish of the afternoon, with the scores now at 3-3 by the time the clock struck minute 72.

However, Reading and Kitson weren’t done there, adding yet another goal to take the lead once again only for Steed Malbranque to step up to level things for a defiant Spurs.

There was no fightback from the Royals following Malbranque’s effort, who paved the way for Jermain Defoe’s goal to hand his side the lead with 12 minutes to go and Berbatov to steal the show with his fourth goal of the game in the 83rd minute.

5 Tottenham 9-1 Wigan, November 2009 Defoe enjoys five-star display as Tottenham thrash Wigan

Jermaine Defoe for Spurs.

As it turns out, anything Berbatov can do, Jermain Defoe can do better, much to the detriment of Wigan Athletic. Two years on from their 10-goal thriller with Reading, Tottenham enjoyed goals galore once again – and this time in far more comfortable fashion.

1-0 up at half-time courtesy of Peter Crouch, Defoe and the rest of the Lilywhites seemingly decided to change into their goalscoring boots at the break to hit Wigan for nine in sensational fashion.

Sealing the points and securing the match ball within the space of seven second-half minutes, Defoe found his first of five goals in the 51st minute before netting his hat-trick in the 58th following what proved to be a consolation from Paul Scharner a minute earlier. But Spurs weren’t done there.

In a ruthless mood, Aaron Lennon added a fourth and Defoe followed suit to stretch Spurs’ lead to 5-1 in the 69th minute. Many sides and many strikers would have been satisfied at that point, but Defoe found a fifth in the final three minutes of normal time before David Bentley and Niko Kranjcar turned a thrashing into a historic day for their side.

4 Man Utd 8-2 Arsenal, August 2011 Arsenal embarrassed at Old Trafford

Look away now, Arsenal fans. When it comes to Sir Alex Ferguson versus Arsene Wenger, Manchester United’s 8-2 thrashing of the Gunners is one that the former will enjoy looking back on a tad bit more than his counterpart.

This was the Red Devils at their ruthless best. As for the north London side, it almost sums up what was to come – this was Robin van Persie’s final trip to Old Trafford in Arsenal colours.

In the blink of an eye, Man United found themselves out of sight courtesy of Danny Welbeck, Ashley Young and the first of three Wayne Rooney goals. Theo Walcott’s effort just moments before the break gave Arsenal hope, but if ever that was crushed, it was in the second half.

Rooney recommenced the onslaught in the 64th minute before Nani made it a five-star display, with Park Ji-Sung ensuring the Gunners were hit for six.

Having missed a first-half penalty, Van Persie eventually got himself on the scoresheet at Old Trafford, only for Carl Jenkinson’s red card to open the door for further Arsenal embarrassment.

Completing his hat-trick, Rooney converted from the spot not long before Young found his brace for goal number eight. United had delivered a damning statement. Arsenal, in historic fashion, had been humiliated.

3 Arsenal 7-3 Newcastle, December 2012 Walcott stars as Arsenal reach seventh heaven

Theo Walcott for Arsenal.

A year on from their nightmare afternoon at Old Trafford, it was Arsenal who found themselves dishing out the goals as Theo Walcott became the star of the show.

Level at the break courtesy of efforts from the winger and Demba Ba, Arsenal and Newcastle United endured quite the 45 minutes in the second half.

Despite shipping seven goals, Newcastle gave themselves hope on two occasions after the interval.

Sylvain Marveaux’s effort levelled things up to cancel out Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s effort and equalised once again courtesy of Ba’s second of the afternoon in response to Lukas Podolski’s header. However, that’s where the Magpies’ hope came to an end.

Sealing the three points, Walcott found his second just four minutes after Ba had equalised before Olivier Giroud’s quickfire brace in the final 10 minutes put the Gunners out of sight.

Star man Walcott then secured the match ball and a stunning 7-3 victory for his side at the Emirates.

2 West Brom 5-5 Man Utd, May 2013 Sir Alex Ferguson ends United career with ten-goal thriller

Sir Alex Ferguson's final game at Manchester United.

Even with nothing to play for and retirement to enjoy, it wouldn’t have surprised anyone if Sir Alex Ferguson ripped up his speech to give his side one final version of his infamous hairdryer treatment after they conceded a three-goal lead to eventually draw 5-5 against West Bromwich Albion in his final game.

The legendary manager was initially on course for the perfect farewell, with Manchester United sitting three goals to the good thanks to Shinji Kagawa, Jonas Olsson’s own goal and Alexander Buttner’s effort.

Even when James Morrison and substitute Romelu Lukaku handed West Brom hope, it looked as though the Red Devils would cruise to victory having gone on to gain a 5-2 lead through Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez.

Almost foreshadowing the post-Ferguson era, however, the Baggies soon bounced back to hand the Manchester United icon the most dramatic final 10 minutes of his Premier League career that nobody saw coming.

As the clock struck the 80th minute, so did Lukaku, with Youssouf Mulumbu following up soon after. Suddenly a goal away from a dramatic comeback, a young Lukaku ensured that it was out with the old and in with the new when he made it five apiece in the 86th minute.

1 Portsmouth 7-4 Reading, September 2007 Pompey put seven past Reading in 11-goal epic

Portsmouth in 2007.

It’s the second time that Reading have featured on this list, and the second time that they’ve found themselves on the wrong end of the history books, as Portsmouth put seven past the Royals.

On another frustrating afternoon for the visitors, Reading were just 2-1 down at the break after Benjani’s brace was followed up by Stephen Hunt’s effort. They even found themselves level just three minutes after the break courtesy of Dave Kitson, only for a flurry of goals to arrive.

First came Hermann Hreidarsson’s equaliser in the 55th minute to open the floodgates, with Niko Kranjcar striking and Benjani completing his hat-trick to follow suit not long after.

Shane Long’s effort did at least interrupt the Pompey goals, leaving the score at a 5-3 thriller, before Ivar Ingimarsson’s own goal and Sulley Muntari’s spot-kick put the home side further out of reach at 7-3.

Sol Campbell then deflected in Nicky Shorey’s strike to end matters in what proved to be a historic 7-4 epic.

Sanchez upgrade: Chelsea want £58m star who’d be their best since Courtois

Since Thibaut Courtois left Chelsea in 2018, joining Real Madrid for around £35m, the Blues have struggled to find a permanent number one between the sticks to replace him. Courtois made 154 appearances for Chelsea, conceding just 152 goals and keeping 58 clean sheets.

Chelsea signed Kepa Arrizabalaga in 2018, in an attempt to replace Courtois, for a whopping £71.6m, making him the most expensive goalkeeper of all time. Kepa made 163 appearances for the Blues, conceding 175 times and keeping 59 clean sheets.

The closest Chelsea have come to effectively replacing Courtois, is Edouard Mendy, who signed for the Blues from Rennes for around £22m in 2020. The Senegal international kept 49 clean sheets in just 105 games for the club, playing a massive hand in their Champions League triumph in 2021.

However, in the modern game, goalkeepers are required to do so much more than just stop shots. Their ability on the ball, to join in during the build-up, play out from the back, and even pick direct passes to the forwards is extremely important, which could see Chelsea dip into the transfer market yet again.

Chelsea's search for a goalkeeper

According to reports from CaughtOffside, Chelsea remain interested in Porto goalkeeper, Diogo Costa. However, the Blues could face competition for the 25-year-old shot-stopper, as Bayern Munich also appear to be interested in Costa, to replace Manuel Neuer who is considering his retirement at the end of this season.

Costa has made 167 appearances for Porto, conceding just 142 goals, whilst keeping 71 clean sheets and totaling 15,111 minutes played. He is also the Portugal number one, already having 31 caps for his country.

The in-demand talent would cost around £58m according to the reports, but he could prove to be the long-term answer Chelsea have been looking for since losing Courtois in 2018, providing a mixture of elite shot-stopping, and comfortable on-ball traits.

Robert Sanchez vs Diogo Costa comparison

Sanchez was signed by Chelsea in 2023, joining from Brighton for around £25m. He was quickly replaced as the number one last season, with Mauricio Pochettino preferring Djordje Petrovic between the sticks, after Sanchez made multiple errors leading to goals early in the campaign.

However, with Enzo Maresca’s appointment, Sanchez has found himself reinstated as the Chelsea number one, with the Italian manager wanting composure on the ball from his goalkeeper, and a willingness to play out from the back, sticking to the gameplan, and not panicking on the ball.

Costa, who has been described as “superman” by Jacek Kulig, has a higher clean sheet rate, fewer goals against, and a better pass completion percentage than Chelsea’s Sanchez. The Spanish goalkeeper is making more saves per 90, but this is also due to the 5.22 shots being conceded per 90, compared to the 2.81 against Costa per 90.

One positive Sanchez does have over Costa, is his ability to prevent crosses, and provide the team with high claims/punches, due to his 6 foot 5 frame. Costa, on the other hand, is just 6 foot 1, opting to stay on his line more often, and trust his reactions with shots from crosses.

Whilst he may not have the height of Sanchez or Courtois, Costa could be exactly what Chelsea need, in order to aid the build-up from the back, whilst also providing the defenders with the assurance and protection if shots do make it on goal.

The goalkeeping department has been a problem position for a number of years now at Stamford Bridge, yet the Porto titan could represent the long-awaited solution.
