Nick Hockley said the relationship with CSA is “very strong” despite the pullout earlier this year

Cricket Australia is hopeful they have found a window to play their postponed Test series against South Africa in 2023.The series was originally scheduled for March of this year but Australia pulled out amid concerns over the biosecurity plans which led to an angry reaction from Cricket South Africa.Nick Hockley, the CA chief executive, said the relationship with CSA was now “very strong” as they looked to find space in the calendar.”As we said at the time when we were very disappointed and I know our players were extremely, extremely disappointed not to be able to go to South Africa, so we’re pleased that we’ve been able to find a window in 2023 to reschedule,” Hockley said after CA’s AGM on Thursday.South Africa had originally been scheduled to tour Australia in the 2021-22 season for white-ball matches but that was postponed due to being unable to fit the required quarantine periods into the calendar.Australia have played very little Test cricket since the pandemic struck with just the four home matches against India last season and have not had an away series since the 2019 Ashes. Along with the South Africa series, a tour to Bangladesh was also postponed early in the pandemic.Related

New South Wales wants governance reform at Cricket Australia

The one-off Test against Afghanistan, which was delayed from last season and was due to be played in Hobart in late November, will be postponed again following CA’s stance on women having access to support under the Taliban.Next year should see a significant increase in the Tests they play. After the home Ashes they are scheduled for a trio of series in Asia against Pakistan, Sri Lanka and India which form the away legs of their next World Test Championship campaign. However, the Pakistan series, which is due to be Australia’s first visit to the country since 1998, now has uncertainty around it following New Zealand’s pullout and England’s decision not to travel.Negotiations around that tour will fall under a new CA chairman after Earl Eddings resigned yesterday having lost the support of Western Australia. Richard Freudenstein has taken on the role in an interim capacity with the aim to have the position filled permanently by the end of the year. While there is confidence there will be a full summer of cricket in Australia, Covid-19 remains a major challenge and there are a number of other key issues on the horizon for the game including the next MoU negotiations – although CA and the Australian Cricketers’ Association are now on much better terms – as well as rebuilding relationships at state level. John Knox, the New South Wales chairman, also made a call for a full governance review of CA during the AGM.”I think the timing is a little bit unfortunate,” Freudenstein said of Eddings’ departure. “We at the board had planned for an orderly transition that would have started with appointing a successor at the end of the season, and then that handover happening over the next period of time to help build those relationships. But we’ve got an experienced board and an experienced executive team, and we will make sure things get done. That’s just the way cricket works.”At the AGM it was confirmed that CA had spent $23 million on Covid-related costs including biosecurity although the game virtually broke even with an overall loss of $151,000. “Although this was an improvement on revised budgetary expectations, it represented a significant adverse variation from the four-year cycle projections in the long-range plan due to the impacts of Covid-19 on match revenues and costs,” a statement said.

Everton v Newcastle team news: Howe’s "total one-off" returns after injury

A Newcastle United player who Eddie Howe has described as a “total one-off” is available for the weekend clash with Everton, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

Newcastle prepare for Everton trip

The Magpies have steadied the ship after their disappointing 3-1 defeat away to Fulham earlier this month, not least after picking up a credible 1-1 draw at home to reigning Premier League champions Manchester City last Saturday. That was followed by a 1-0 victory over AFC Wimbledon in the EFL Cup third round on Tuesday night.

Next up for Newcastle is a trip to Everton on Saturday evening, with the Blues buoyed by their first win of the season last time around in the league, as they got the better of Crystal Palace 2-1 at Goodison Park.

Anthony Gordon scores for Newcastle

For that reason, the home faithful are likely to be in good spirits when Howe’s side make the trip to Goodison, in what has the potential to be an awkward assignment. The Magpies should still have enough quality to prevail, but their performances this season haven’t always been wholly convincing.

Howe is under an element of pressure, not only because the displays have been hit-and-miss, but also due to his relationship with Paul Mitchell reportedly being strained, so he will know the importance of adding three points to his tally this weekend.

Newcastle receive injury boost before Everton

Taking to X, Downie claimed that Fabian Schar is available for Newcastle’s meeting with Everton, having overcome an ankle knock suffered against Wimbledon in midweek.

Having Schar available on Saturday is vitally important, with the Swiss’ experience crucial in what could be a cauldron of noise under the light at Goodison Park. The 32-year-old has stood tall in the absence of Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles through injury and Howe is under no illusions as to how important he is to the cause.

“There won’t be many centre-halves like Fabi. He is a total one-off. He is a very good defender. When he is absolutely concentrated and really well trained, he’s as good a defender as I’ve seen. He reads the game really well and the amount of interceptions he makes is second to none.”

Schar has been a wonderful servant for Newcastle over the years, making 193 appearances and proving to be a mainstay of the defender, and while he isn’t getting any younger, his influence remains great and there is no reason why he can’t remain at a high level for another few years.

Newcastle wanted to sign £50m ace who's been better than Gordon & Isak since

This has got to be one of the biggest blunders under the PIF ownership…

ByAngus Sinclair Oct 4, 2024

To have had him absent at Everton this weekend would have significantly weakened the Magpies’ defence, so this update is a significant one, ahead of a vital 90 minutes at Goodison.

96% passing: 9/10 Spurs star was just as good as Van de Ven & Johnson

Tottenham Hotspur recorded their second successive win in the Premier League with a fantastic 3-0 win against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Goals from Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski, and Dominic Solanke secured all three points for the Lilywhites, whilst the hosts were reduced to ten in the first half after Bruno Fernandes was sent off for a challenge on James Maddison.

The opening goal for Ange Postecoglou’s side came in the third minute of the match, as Micky van de Ven burst through to fire the ball across the box for Johnson to tap the ball in, and that set the tempo for Spurs.

Johnson and van de Ven were both hugely impressive throughout the evening for Tottenham, as they caught the eye with their displays against United.

Johnson and van de Ven's performances in numbers

The Dutch central defender showcased his incredible pace with that early run into the box to assist the opening goal and utilised his speed during the game to push Spurs up the pitch and ensure that they were not caught out in transition – sweeping up any balls in behind the backline.

Van de Ven also completed an eye-catching 98% of his attempted passes and created one ‘big chance’ – the assist for Johnson – in possession, which shows that he was incredibly reliable on the ball.

Meanwhile, Johnson was in the right place at the right time to score the opening goal and came within inches of making it two as he struck the post not long after.

The Wales international, who completed 81% of his attempted passes, also recorded an assist for the second goal as his cross deflected into the path of Kulusevski.

There was a Tottenham player who may end up being the unsung hero of the performance, however, as Rodrigo Bentancur was just as good as Van de ven and Johnson.

Rodrigo Bentancur was the unsung hero

The Uruguay international was not as flashy as Kulusevski or James Maddison, for example, but went about his business in expert fashion in the middle of the park.

With two attack-minded number eights ahead of him, the former Juventus man needed to be reliable in midfield for Spurs and that is exactly what he was.

Football.london handed him a player rating of 9/10 for his display and hailed his calmness on the ball. This is backed up by his impressive statistics from the match.

As you can see in the table above, Bentancur was incredibly reliable on the ball for Tottenham with almost a touch every minute and a pass success rate of 96%.

The 27-year-old star, who made two tackles and one interception, won the majority of his battles on the ground to maintain possession and win the midfield battle for Spurs.

His metronomic passing helped Tottenham, before and after the red card altered the dynamic of the match, to control the game and ensure that they dictated the tempo, which is why he was the unsung hero of the result and as good as van de Ven and Johnson.

Newcastle now eyeing move for West Brom assist machine Tom Fellows

Newcastle United are believed to be keen on signing an “exciting” player who has already displayed his creativity this season, according to an update from journalist Alan Nixon.

Latest Newcastle news

The Magpies lost 2-1 away to Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, leaving them sitting 12th in the table, but it was a far from disappointing showing from Eddie Howe’s men. Away from the on-pitch action, Newcastle continue to be linked with new signings, following a summer transfer window that seemingly left both Paul Mitchell and Howe dissatisfied with the lack of incomings.

One player who has emerged as a potential option is Barcelona attacker Ferran Torres, who has fallen down the pecking order at the Camp Nou, following the excellent form of Lamine Yamal, Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski this season. The Spaniard is seen as a January target and has experience of the Premier League, having played for Manchester City in the past.

Newcastle are also thought to be battling Tottenham for the signing of Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney, with the 22-year-old a talented young player who has started all 12 of his side’s Championship matches in 2024/25 to date, scoring twice for good measure.

Newcastle eyeing move for "exciting" Championship ace

According to Nixon on Patreon [via Football League World], Newcastle are among the clubs interested in signing West Brom youngster Tom Fellows in the January transfer window.

It is claimed that Everton have sent scouts to watch the 21-year-old in action, perhaps suggesting that they are looking the strongest in the race to snap him up currently, but the Magpies are providing competition, along with the likes of Crystal Palace, Southampton and Ipswich Town.

Tom Fellows celebrates for West Brom.

Planning for the long-term future is something that Newcastle constantly have to be thinking about, even though supporters will understandably want big names who are at their peak, too, and Fellows looks like a great option.

The West Brom midfielder has already registered five assists in 10 Championship starts this season, outlining his creativity, while former England international Carlton Palmer has said of him: “He had his breakthrough into the first-team in the last 12 months, and he is an exciting player who is potentially going to have a fantastic future and is going to go up in valuation.”

Fellows has won two caps for England Under-20s in the past, showing that he has been considered a highly-rated young player throughout his career, and he is a footballer who should only go from strength to strength in the coming years.

West Brom will understandably be desperate to retain the services of a prized asset with a high ceiling, but the lure of the Premier League is great, meaning his head could easily be turned by a move there. Newcastle are the biggest of the clubs being linked with him, hopefully giving them the edge in the battle to acquire his signature.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

After the Gunners beat City at the Emirates, Kendrick Lamar’s "HUMBLE" echoed through the stadium speakers, a possible jab at Erling Haaland’s earlier advice to Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta to "stay humble." Earlier in the match, Myles Lewis-Skelly mimicked Haaland’s zen celebration after putting Arsenal 3-1 up, adding to the growing rivalry between the clubs. Gordon has now joined the bandwagon and urged his teammates to "stay humble" in what seemed to be an apparent dig at Mikel Arteta & Co. after the victory.

  • WHAT GORDON SAID

In his post-match interview with Gordon said: "It feels amazing. A proper team performance and we got the win. Our fans are never in question, they make it so difficult for the opposition and we did it the right way. We had a game plan we thought would work. Everyone knows we press. It is important for us to stay humble now. It will be a big occasion but it's so far away."

    WHAT NEXT FOR NEWCASTLE?

Newcastle’s triumph marks their third victory over Arsenal this season, with the Gunners failing to score in any of these encounters. Man Utd recruitment team identify new target to partner Kobbie Mainoo

Manchester United’s recruitment team have identified a new target as they look to strengthen their midfield once again, according to a new report. The Red Devils added five players to their squad over the course of the summer; one of those was midfielder Manuel Ugarte, and the club still have their eye on adding in that area of the team.

INEOS tracking £13m-rated gem as possible Luke Shaw replacement at Man Utd

Man Utd look to be weighing up their options to strengthen the left side of their defence.

1 ByBrett Worthington Oct 24, 2024 Man Utd transfer news

The January transfer window isn’t a million miles away from opening, and United appear to be looking at potential options they could explore when that does arrive. United officials were spotted scouting Napoli duo Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Alessandro Buongiorno in their game against Empoli last weekend.

United staff were there to take in Kvaratskhelia in particular, but are said to have been left equally mpressed by Buongiorno, who only joined the Italian side in the summer but has already been making a big impression. The Red Devils did business with Napoli in the summer, as they sold Scott McTominay, and now they could be looking for a favour in return.

Man United’s hierarchy is also in the market for a new left-back, as the absentees of Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia have caused them issues. United are now keen to resolve that and are keeping an eye on Julio Soler of Argentinian side Lunas. Improving in defence and up front isn’t the only priority for United, as they are also keen on adding to their midfield, despite the arrival of Ugarte a few months ago.

Man Utd identify Richard Rios as new midfield target

According to Give Me Sport, Manchester United are monitoring Richard Rios as they look to strengthen in the midfield department. The club’s focus is set to turn to the midfield, as Christian Eriksen is now in the final year of his contract and looks set to leave at the end of the season, and Casemiro could also be on his way out next summer. Therefore, United are in the market for someone who could be a long-term partner to Kobbie Mainoo.

United could then look to add to their midfield in January, and while they are taking a look at Rios, they are also monitoring other players. The report states that Morten Frendrup is one name under consideration, as he’s been linked with a move to Old Trafford recently.

The Red Devils are also looking at Morten Hjulmand, who was also linked with a move to the club in the summer; Sverre Nypan is also under consideration and has been scouted by United earlier this season; and the final option is Chris Rigg, who has been admired by United for a while now.

Rios is a new player being looked at by United – he currently plays for Brazilian side Palmeiras and has been since March 2023. The 24-year-old can operate as a deep midfielder, as well as a more advanced one, as he’s also got the ability to play out on the right and has done for Palmeiras. The Premier League side is said to have scouted Rios through the summer, and he is expected to make a move to Europe soon, but United’s stance on the player is unclear as of now.

Arsenal now scout 20-year-old gem who is the perfect Thomas Partey upgrade

Arsenal scouts have been left impressed by a 20-year-old target who could potentially be the successor to Thomas Partey in north London, according to one report.

Arsenal set for midfield reshuffle in 2025

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side have bought at least one midfielder every single season since the Spaniard’s arrival as head coach, and are almost certain to continue that trend in 2025 as they search for a successor to Thomas Partey.

The Ghanaian arrived from Atlético Madrid in a deal worth £45m back in 2020, but has only shown glimpses of the player he appeared to be in Spain during an injury-hit time at the Emirates Stadium.

He has only managed more than 24 appearances in a Premier League campaign once, and has missed vital chunks of almost every season through various issues. Turning 32-years-old at the end of this season, his £200,000 a week deal in north London will also be up, and it has been reported that he will not be offered fresh terms at Arsenal, leaving as a free agent when his contract expires.

Meanwhile, Jorginho will be 33-years-old and also out of contract, though in his case there is an option to extend his deal by a further year. Nonetheless, there will be a clear gap in Arsenal’s ranks with club-record signing Declan Rice seemingly preferred further forward by Arteta.

Arsenal must regret signing high-earning flop who's now worth just £8m

ByEthan Lamb Oct 21, 2024

It means that the club have been looking for replacements, and may well now have just found the perfect option.

Arsenal scouts impressed by 20-year-old gem

That is according to The Boot Room, who claim that Arsenal have been left impressed by Brighton youngster Carlos Baleba, and are “scouting” him ahead of the January transfer window.

They are one of several clubs that have been “impressed with Baleba’s recent form” and have to this point “maintained a watching brief” on the 20-year-old, who has kept Brighton’s summer signing Mats Wieffer out of the side with a series of strong performances at the base of midfield.

Still well short of his prime, the Cameroonian midfielder is already giving Thomas Partey a run for his money according to stat site FBRef.

Key to Brighton’s high-flying form, which sees them just two points behind the Gunners, a move in January seems almost certain to be off the cards, with a summer deal far more likely. However, he won’t come cheaply, with the Seagulls having developed a reputation to extracting the maximum fee possible for their players, something that Chelsea have found out with both Marc Cucurella and Moises Caicedo.

Should he continue to impress, he could be a costly signing, but one that sets Arsenal’s midfield up for the next decade and seamlessly replaces the departing Partey.
