Dream Wijndal alternative: Celtic working on deal to sign £3m star

Celtic secured their place in the next round of the League Cup on Sunday with a 3-1 win for Brendan Rodgers' side against Hibernian at Parkhead.

The Hoops were knocked out of the competition at this time last season by Kilmarnock but ensured that they picked up the win and progressed thanks to two goals from Daizen Maeda and one from Nicolas Kuhn.

It was the second win against Hibernian this month after the two sides had met the previous weekend in the Scottish Premiership, with goals from Nicolas Kuhn and Callum McGregor sealing all three points at Easter Road.

Viljami Sinisalo will have to wait for his debut between the sticks but there was a second debut for Idah, whilst Kasper Schmeichel and Paulo Bernardo had already made their respective debuts earlier this month in the Premiership.

There could be more debuts to come for the Scottish giants over the coming weeks, as the summer transfer window does not officially slam shut until the end of the month.

Rodgers and the club's recruitment team still have a bit of time left to make further signings for the Hoops, and they reportedly have their eye on a new defender to bolster the squad.

Celtic keen on Premier League full-back

According to Football Insider, Celtic are working on a deal to sign left-back Owen Beck from Liverpool on a permanent deal before the end of the window.

The report claims that the Hoops are hoping to see off competition from a host of clubs in the English Championship to land the full-back's signature, with Queens Park Rangers named as one of the interested parties.

It states that the Premiership champions want to sign the 22-year-old talent on a permanent basis and that the Premier League giants are looking for a fee within the region of £3m.

Liverpool defender Owen Beck.

Football Insider reveals that the Bhoys are in the market to add another left-back to their squad because Greg Taylor is currently the manager's only senior option in that position, with Alexandro Bernabei currently out on loan.

The outlet adds that Celtic see Beck as a player with 'huge' potential who could come in and provide the Scotland international with competition for his place in the starting XI this season.

However, the Welsh dynamo is not the only left-back on the club's radar. Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph recently claimed that they are also interested in Ajax's Owen Wijndal.

The journalist claimed that the Dutch giants are open to cashing in on the left-footed defender and that Celtic have made an initial inquiry about his availability.

Owen Wijndal's form last season

The 24-year-old defender struggled to nail down a starting position at Ajax in the 2022/23 campaign, with just 15 starts in the Eredivisie, and was sent out on loan to Royal Antwerp last term.

It was a chance for the full-back to go and play regular football week-in-week-out in the Belgian top-flight and he enjoyed a solid season down the left flank.

However, it was not an outstanding year for Wijndal and there may be concerns that he would not come in at Parkhead and offer genuine competition for Taylor.

As you can see in the table above, their defensive statistics were similar at league level last term but the Celtic star's attacking work was vastly superior.

As a dominant team in the Premiership, the club's full-backs must be able to carry an attacking threat to break down low blocks and it does not appear as though Wijndal does.

His statistics in the Champions League for Antwerp last term are further evidence of that. The Dutchman did not create a single chance for his teammates in six outings in the competition, with zero key passes in five starts.

His form in Europe and domestically for the Belgian outfit suggests that Wijndal would not offer much in possession for the Hoops, which is not ideal when Taylor has the quality to be a difference-maker in the final third.

Beck would be a dream alternative to Wijndal as a £3m signing from Liverpool due to his Premiership experience and attacking quality from left-back.

What Owen Beck could bring to Liverpool

Whilst the 24-year-old Dutchman struggled to provide much creativity down the left flank for Antwerp last season, Beck spent the year on loan at Dundee and provided a big presence at the top end of the pitch.

Liverpool sent the young defender out on loan to the Premiership and he proved his quality in and out of possession throughout the season, earning himself a place in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year.

Owen Beck coming on for Liverpool.

This means that Celtic would be signing a player who has already shown that he can compete week-in-week-out in the Scottish top-flight, whereas Wijndal has no prior experience in the division, and this suggests that the Welshman could hit the ground running at Parkhead.

The 22-year-old, who was once described as a "spectacular" left-back by talent scout Jacek Kulig, made an impact in the final third with 2.3 key passes per game and six 'big chances' created in 25 league outings.

As you can see in the table above, Beck has the ability to offer far more than Wijndal in possession due to his ability to score goals and create chances from a left-back position.

He also made 1.3 more tackles and interceptions per game last term, whilst winning a similar percentage of his physical duels, and this suggests that Beck could win possession back more frequently through tackles and interceptions for Celtic.

Therefore, the £3m-rated star could be a dream alternative to the Ajax defender because of his Premiership experience, defensive work, and attacking quality, which is why Rodgers must push for this deal to be completed this month.

'Arsenal are the new Stoke City!' – Ex-Man Utd star Dimitar Berbatov aims cheeky dig at Arsenal after Gunners win with two goals from corners

The Gunners secured a 2-0 victory against United on Wednesday night in the Premier League. Interestingly, Arsenal achieved Wednesday’s victory without one of their primary aerial threats, Gabriel Magalhaes, who has already scored three goals from set-pieces this season. The Brazilian defender was absent due to a minor injury. However, his absence was barely felt as other players stepped up. Jurrien Timber opened the scoring with a deft finish following a precise delivery from Declan Rice, while William Saliba sealed the win with a header that United’s defence failed to contain.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Arsenal’s ability to capitalize on set-pieces has been a defining feature of their season. Since the start of the last campaign, they have scored 22 goals from these scenarios, the most in the Premier League. This has led to comparisons by Berbatov, who likened them to the Stoke City side managed by Tony Pulis from 2006 to 2013. Under Pulis, Stoke earned a reputation for being set-piece specialists, with Rory Delap's long throws being a signature weapon.

  • WHAT BERBATOV SAID

Speaking on , Berbatov humorously stated: "Probably the Premier League is the only league in the world where you have so many players around the goalkeeper, pushing, shoving, making chaos. Normally it is going to be a foul. Not here. You need to be strong. And that's probably why he (Ruben Amorim) was watching from the side, he was like, 'What is going on with my keeper?' You need to work on that. As we joke, Arsenal is the new Stoke City, right? Depending on set-pieces, which can give you the win, as it was today."

Kane Williamson out of second Test; Tom Latham to captain New Zealand

Will Young to bat at No. 3 after showing strong County Championship form for Durham

Matt Roller09-Jun-2021Kane Williamson, the New Zealand captain, has been ruled out of the second Test against England at Edgbaston because of a persistent elbow injury.Williamson had to miss an ODI series against Bangladesh earlier this year because of the same problem, which also caused him to miss the start of the 2021 IPL for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Tom Latham, the regular vice-captain, will lead the team in Williamson’s absence, as he did against Australia at the SCG in January 2020 and West Indies in Wellington in December.Related

Williamson ruled out of Bangladesh ODIs with elbow injury

“It’s not an easy decision for Kane to have to miss a Test, but we think it’s the right one,” Gary Stead, New Zealand’s head coach, said. “He’s had an injection in his elbow to relieve the irritation he’s been experiencing when he bats and a period of rest and rehabilitation will help maximise his recovery.”The injury is not expected to rule him out of the World Test Championship (WTC) final against India, which starts on June 18 at the Ageas Bowl. “The decision has been made very much with the ICC World Test Championship final at Southampton in mind and we are confident he will be ready for that match,” Stead added.”I’m sure he’ll be back [for the final],” Latham said. “From our point of view, it’s a precautionary thing. We’d love him to be available for this game but obviously we’ve got the eye on the final in a week’s time, so for Kane, it’s about giving himself the best opportunity to be fully fit and available for that game. The decision was made for him to rest and get that right for what we have coming up.”He’s fantastic as a captain. It’s well-documented how his personality and his calm nature out in the middle has been vital to this group. He’s very relaxed – doesn’t get too high, doesn’t get too low which I think has been great for this side in recent years. He’s obviously a wonderful leader and we’ve seen that throughout his captaincy career.”Williamson will be replaced in the New Zealand side by Will Young, the top-order batter who won both of his Test caps to date in the home series against West Indies in December.Young prepared for the series by playing four County Championship matches for Durham, scoring hundreds in two of his three most recent innings. He will bat at No. 3, with Latham and Devon Conway continuing to open the batting.”He’s been here a few weeks earlier [than the rest of the squad] and was playing cricket,” Latham said. “He had an opportunity back in our home summer and is coming off runs for Durham which is always nice when you get selected, especially in these conditions, so it’s another exciting opportunity for Will to put his hand up and try to put that performance on the board.”Trent Boult is set to play in the second Test•Pool/AFP via Getty ImagesLatham also confirmed that Trent Boult will return to the side, with Mitchell Santner missing through injury, though he was yet to reach a final decision on the side before training on Wednesday afternoon. Ajaz Patel and the uncapped allrounder Rachin Ravindra are the two candidates to replace Santner, while Matt Henry, Doug Bracewell and Jacob Duffy will also be considered as New Zealand look to manage their seamers’ workloads ahead of the WTC final.”It’s a case-by-case situation,” he said. “There is an eye to what we have coming up in a week’s time but on the other hand this is obviously such an important game for us. We’ve got training now and then we’ll have a look at the wicket and have those conversations around what best suits the playing XI tomorrow. We’ve got a big squad to pick from.”While New Zealand’s thinking has clearly been influenced by the proximity of the WTC final, Latham said that the squad were not taking the opportunity to win a series in England for the first time since 1999 for granted.”Beating England is higher on our priority list [than the WTC final],” he said. “We’ve got such a great opportunity to come here and try to play our brand of cricket and put on a performance that we’re proud of. Yes, there is an eye to the final in a week’s time, but our focus is solely on this game and the next five days.”To win away from home is not an easy thing around the world nowadays, and if we can put the performance on the board that we know we’re capable off, fingers crossed that will give us a good chance to be successful after the five days.”Joe Root, England’s captain, acknowledged that Williamson’s absence was a big loss for New Zealand, but insisted that his team would be “respectful” of a side that has demonstrated its depth by qualifying for the WTC final.”He’s a big gun, No.1 in the world,” Root said. “He’s one of those players you spend a lot of time thinking about how you’re going to keep him quiet and get rid of him early. It will be a huge loss for them but we’re also very respectful that New Zealand have a strong squad and are involved in the WTC final because they have strength in depth.”We saw last week a debutant coming in and getting a double hundred. We’ve got to make sure we’re clear on our plans, clued up on whoever replaces him so we can find ways of keeping him quiet and dismissing him.”

Juventus contact Chelsea over signing "experienced" £325,000-a-week star

Closing in on completing the signing of Pedro Neto, Chelsea could now show the door to a Premier League winner who's reportedly the subject of interest from Juventus.

Chelsea transfer news

In what is becoming a yearly trend, the Blues have once again endured a hectic summer transfer window, welcoming the likes of Filip Jorgensen, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Aaron Anselmino.

Leicester midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall

Things are only set to get busier, with Neto on course to become the latest arrival at Stamford Bridge and the biggest yet this summer, as a reported €60m (£52m) move from Wolverhampton Wanderers is seemingly imminent.

However, Neto's arrival could spell the end for one particular player at Stamford Bridge, with Enzo Maresca almost certain to choose his new star over the Premier League veteran, who's attracting interest from Italy.

According to CalcioMercato, Juventus have contacted Chelsea about signing Raheem Sterling this summer, requesting information about the former Manchester City star. The report also claims that Sterling, who earns a reported £325,000 a week at the west London club, has reportedly been shown the door, with Chelsea preferring to "sell him outright" this summer.

Watch out Omorodion: Chelsea want PL ace who's a bigger talent than Solanke

The Blues are still looking to improve their forward line this summer.

ByEthan Lamb Aug 11, 2024

The winger was a serial winner at Manchester City and is a Premier League veteran these days, but Neto's arrival will undoubtedly limit his game time even further. At 29 years old, the England international could have one last big move left – something Juventus could now offer him.

Given that the Italian giants reportedly want to part ways with Federico Chiesa this summer, there will almost certainly be room for the arrival of Sterling.

"Experienced" Sterling should leave Chelsea

If he's handed the chance to join Juventus, Sterling should take it this month. Under a new boss in Maresca and with plenty of competition for places in the former Leicester City manager's side, the England international would be wise to move on. Neto's arrival should result in the end of his starting place and perhaps the end of his Chelsea career altogether.

That said, there's no doubt that the winger brings a wealth of know-how, as pointed out by Mauricio Pochettino last season, describing Sterling as "experienced". The former Chelsea boss told the club's official website: "I’m so happy for Raheem because I see him smiling every day, It’s very clear that he is very happy right now, and that is very important.

"For us, it’s clear that we always want our players to feel happy and comfortable in their environment. Also, Raheem is an experienced player, a key player, and someone that can help guide the younger guys in the squad.

"He has started the season very well. He is scoring goals, he’s making assists and he is helping the team. This is much better for us, but also for him, because when you are playing well, you are very happy in your work."

Levy eyeing Spurs move for "beautiful" player with same agent as Maddison

Tottenham Hotspur have backed Ange Postecoglou in the transfer market by splashing the cash on two big-money recruits so far this summer, and are now eyeing a third.

The Lilywhites confirmed the arrival of England international Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth for a reported fee of £65m on Saturday, with £55m guaranteed and £10m in add-ons. That came after the Premier League side splashed out a fee of £30m for Leeds starlet Archie Gray earlier this summer to bolster the manager's options in the middle of the park.

Spurs do not appear to be done there, however, as Daniel Levy is now said to be eyeing up a swoop to add a new defender to the group this month.

Tottenham eyeing up Premier League full-back

According to Give Me Sport, Tottenham's interest in Southampton right-back Kyle Walker-Peters is back in focus amid Emerson Royal's expected move to AC Milan. The Brazilian defender's move to the Italian giants would leave Postecoglou light on options in the right-back position and that is why a move for the Saints star could make sense.

Give Me Sport claims that there is a 'strong' feeling that the English gem, who shares the same agency (CAA Base) as current Tottenham star James Maddison, will move on from St. Mary's before the end of the transfer window.

Southampton defender Kyle Walker-Peters

He is an attractive target for Levy and Postecoglou due to his positional versatility, as he can play in both full-back positions and in midfield, and the fact he fits the homegrown quota having come up through the Spurs academy before his move down south.

Why Spurs should sign Kyle Walker-Peters

Along with the two reasons stated in the report above, there are other factors involved that could make Walker-Peters a fantastic replacement for Emerson this month. Firstly, the 27-year-old ace knows the club inside and out, having spent seven years there at youth and first-team level, and that, along with his 115 Premier League appearances, could help him to hit the ground running.

Secondly, his performances on the pitch in the Championship to help Southampton earn promotion back to the top-flight suggest that he has the potential to be a quality option for Postecoglou.

Walker-Peters caught the eye with his contributions at both ends, whilst his teammates let him down by only scoring four times from the 12 'big chances' he created. The Saints defender, who was described as a "beautiful" footballer by Russell Martin, would likely have to settle for a back-up role at his boyhood club, however.

Pedro Porro started all 35 of his appearances in the Premier League last season and there is no suggestion that Spurs are looking to replace him. The aforementioned statistics, though, show that the potential is there for Walker-Peters to offer more, particularly in an attacking sense, than Emerson did as competition for the Spanish full-back.

Newcastle could regret selling £1.8m ace who outscored Gordon in 23/24

Newcastle United have been blessed with a plethora of attacking talents over the years, with numerous players capturing the hearts of the fanbase during their time at the club.

From iconic hometown heroes such as Alan Shearer to current-day talents like Alexander Isak, the supporters have been able to witness some truly incredible forwards.

However, they’ve not had everything they would’ve liked, with years of disappointment under former owner Mike Ashley.

Mike Ashley at Newcastle United.

At one stage, the Magpies were operating with forwards such as Yoshinori Muto and Joselu, players with high expectations but unfortunately failing to deliver the goods during their time on Tyneside.

Despite the lack of attacking output in recent years, boss Eddie Howe has built a very successful forward line in 2024, with Isak partnered by one player who has rapidly developed at St James’ Park.

Anthony Gordon’s stats in 2023/24

After joining the club in a £45m deal from Everton back in January 2023, there was real hope for the addition of winger Anthony Gordon – potentially providing Isak with added ammunition in the final third.

Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon

Whilst he endured a disappointing first six months under Howe, scoring just once in his first 12 appearances for Newcastle, he exploded into life last season – producing the best campaign of his professional career to date.

The 23-year-old featured in 35 Premier League matches, scoring 11 times whilst providing ten assists, but it wasn’t enough to help the club secure a second successive European finish as the Magpies ended the campaign in seventh place.

However, his subsequent form was enough to earn a call-up for the England squad for Euro 2024, but he only featured in one game during the entire tournament – with his direct pace and dribbling ignored by Gareth Southgate.

Whilst Gordon produced some impressive figures during his first full season on Tyneside, he was outperformed by one talent who the club allowed to leave on the cheap back in 2018.

Newcastle may regret selling 21-goal ace

After coming through the club’s academy and enduring various loan spells with multiple EFL clubs, boyhood Newcastle fan Adam Armstrong was sold to Championship side Blackburn Rovers for a fee in the region of just £1.8m.

The striker would go on to score 55 times during his time at Ewood Park, before securing a big-money transfer to Southampton in 2021 – with his best-ever season coming during their promotion-winning campaign last time around.

The 27-year-old registered 21 goals and 13 assists in the Championship, scoring the winning goal against Leeds United in the play-off final at Wembley, securing an immediate return to the top-flight for Russell Martin’s side.

Armstrong’s eye for goal was evident on various occasions last season, with a variety of different finishes on show, demonstrating the qualities he possesses in the final third.

Whilst it’s easy to say he’s only achieved these figures in the Championship and not the Premier League, his quality in attacking areas would certainly benefit Howe’s side in 2024, with the club potentially living to regret his cheap departure six years ago.

Even if he wasn’t a first-team member in the current squad, the Magpies would’ve been able to receive a significantly higher fee for a player of his talent.

The deal was an example of numerous poor dealings in the market by former owner Ashley, with the club now in a much better position under the Saudi PIF.

However, his excellent goalscoring figures would provide the added depth that Howe’s side have often lacked in recent years – further aiding the attempts to cement themselves as consistent top-four challengers.

Everton have hit the jackpot on "monster" who’s worth more than Broja

It’s not been the best of starts to the season for Everton, but it’s definitely not time to panic. The Toffees go into the first international break of the campaign with three losses from three Premier League matches, the third of which was an inexcusable capitulation.

Everton were in cruise control against Bournemouth, 2-0 up at Goodison Park approaching full-time, but a stunning late turnaround left the Cherries with all three points.

Everton centre-back Michael Keane looks dejected

Jarrad Branthwaite continues to recover from a groin injury that has meant he has not yet featured this term, a huge factor behind the dismal start, and when he returns, Everton will hope to raise their level.

There’s also the addition of Armando Broja to get excited about, with the forward joining on transfer deadline day.

Why Everton signed Armando Broja

Sean Dyche needs to use the international break wisely to reinvigorate his ranks and turn them away from the depths of the divisional table.

Everton’s ownership and financial situation is still alarming but the squad has been strengthened despite having to sell Amadou Onana to Aston Villa for £50m.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has shown signs of restoring his former level but competition was pursued and landed in the form of Chelsea’s Broja, 22, who signed on a season-long loan move with an option to purchase for a £30m fee.

Activating that clause would mean that the Goodison Park side would be paying their largest transfer fee since signing Onana in the first place.

Described as an “animal” by The Athletic’s Jacob Tanswell, the 6 foot 3 Broja is technical and tenacious and will add a dimension. However, he’s not going to displace Calvert-Lewin off the bat, for the England international is indeed on track to reclaim his former position of power in the Premier League.

Why Dominic Calvert-Lewin is still Everton's main man

It’s been a rocky road for Calvert-Lewin. These past few years have pulled him away from the level that had led talent scout Jacek Kulig to herald him as a “monster” while plying his trade under Carlo Ancelotti.

Last season, though, the 27-year-old enjoyed his most productive campaign in a while, scoring eight goals and adding three assists across 38 matches in all competitions.

There was some understandable rustiness, but ‘DCL’ posted four goals and an assist across his final seven fixtures, leading The Athletic’s Patrick Boyland to note that he looked “like the DCL of old”.

Having scored and assisted during the recent Bournemouth defeat, it’s safe to say that he looks ready to take on the Premier League season and offer his services as a high-level focal point.

The Merseysiders will no doubt be glad that they rejected interest from Chelsea and Newcastle United in their talisman. The Magpies were desperate to land the striker but were dissuaded by Everton’s £40m price tag in June and closed the door on that one.

Calvert-Lewin is out of contract at the end of the campaign, so his value is set to dwindle, but he’s still valued higher than Broja and while Everton look set to eke out his quality instead of cashing in for a price deemed inadequate, it’s hard to say that they haven’t hit the jackpot with him. Who knows, he might just prove to be the difference-maker this year.

Jofra Archer: 'If I don't get this right, I won't play any cricket. Period'

Jofra Archer says he is “quite prepared” to miss England’s five-Test series against India in August and September in a bid to be ready for his twin targets of the T20 World Cup and the Ashes next winter, after undergoing what he described as a “career-defining” elbow operation on Friday.Archer, who has been managing his elbow problem ever since being diagnosed with a stress fracture on the tour of South Africa in January 2020, was forced to withdraw from this year’s IPL after playing through the pain during England’s tour of India, and required a cortisone injection to get him through the five-match T20I series in March. The ECB confirmed that he had undergone Friday’s operation, after Archer had failed to come through his return to bowling for Sussex earlier this month. He bowled 29.2 overs in his comeback for Sussex’s 2nd XI, but only managed 18 overs in his County Championship return against Kent two weeks ago.He will now undergo “an intensive rehabilitation period”, according to the ECB, with a review in approximately four weeks to determine his readiness for bowling. That puts him in a race against time to be fit for the first Test against India, at Trent Bridge on August 4, but Archer insists he himself is placing no timeframe on his recovery.”One thing I am determined about post-elbow operation is not to rush my comeback,” Archer wrote in his column in the Daily Mail, “because my primary focus is to be playing for England in the Twenty20 World Cup and Ashes later this year.”Those are my targets. If I come back before then and manage to play in the home Test series against India — then fine, so be it. If I don’t, I am quite prepared to sit out the summer.”The way I am looking at things is that I would rather miss a few weeks of a year so that I have a few more years in my career.”While England would dearly love to have their strike bowler available for the Tests against India, the timing of his operation shows that the ECB also recognise where Archer’s priorities should lie. As the MVP at the 2020 IPL in the UAE, his skills in T20 cricket are second-to-none, and his fitness would be a major asset for a side that hopes to add the 20-over World Cup to the 50-over crown that he was instrumental in winning two years ago.And then there’s the Ashes in Australia in December and January, where England know from past experience the importance of having an arsenal of 90mph bowlers at their disposal. However, Archer is aware that the delicacy of the operation on his elbow demands a cautious return to action.”I just want to get this injury sorted once and for all and that’s why I’m not looking that far ahead or at dates for a return to action,” he wrote. “Because if I don’t get this right, I won’t play any cricket. Period.”I am not going to do myself any good by coming back before I’m fully fit, so I will take my time and do what is best for me and my life.”Related

Archer confirmed that the bandages were already off in the wake of the operation, but that everything was still “very fresh” and that he remained sore after the procedure.”Surgery was always the last option and we wanted to exercise every possible strategy before we went down that route,” he added. “It was the last thing on the list. It is not always a fix and in four weeks we will find out how things have gone.”I must retain faith that this now sorts out the issue for good, although there’s always room for another surgery if needs be. At the age of 26, I am still pretty young.”However, my attitude right now is that the less thought I put into things like that, the better. I just want to throw myself into the rehab.”I remain committed to playing all three formats for England and to winning big series. But it has been quite a while since I bowled completely pain-free.”

Stuart Broad inspired Nottinghamshire to a first victory in red-ball cricket for nearly three years as they thrashed Derbyshire in the LV=Insurance County Championship match at Derby. The England fast bowler took 4 for 37 in two spells while South Africa paceman Dane Paterson and Luke Fletcher shared five wickets to seal a 310-run victory on day three at Derby’s Incora County Ground. It was Nottinghamshire’s first win in first-class cricket since they beat Essex at Chelmsford on June 23rd, 2018 and would have been even more emphatic but for Ben Aitchison’s maiden first-class 50.Related

Paterson finished with 3 for 30 and Fletcher 2 for 32 as Derbyshire were dismissed for 159 with Aitchison hitting Liam Patterson-White for three sixes before he was last out.”It’s a bit different than what it’s been like for the last three years, 1043 days I read last night, so absolutely elated,” Notts captain Steve Mullaney said. “A lot of hard work has gone into having this feeling but at the same time we know it’s only the start on our journey to getting better as a team but we are obviously made-up to get the first win of this season.”I felt we were close but with that hoodoo hanging over us you never believe it until that last wicket is taken. It was a great start today with Stuart getting two in his first over and he’s ran in for both games he’s played like it’s been a Test match so credit to him.”Derbyshire’s chances of even getting close to a 470 run target were slim before the start but after the first over of the morning, they were as distant as the stars. Running in from the Racecourse End, Broad found lift and movement to have Luis Reece caught low down at first slip for 15 and his next ball, full and swinging, caught Leus du Plooy on the crease. If it was a lack of foot movement that betrayed du Plooy, Wayne Madsen had taken a couple of paces down the pitch when he edged Paterson into the gloves of Tom Moores.Paterson struck another big blow in the same over when he moved one back off the seam to beat Matt Critchley’s defensive push and knock out off stump. Derbyshire’s slide towards a crushing defeat gathered pace as Harvey Hosein flashed firm-footed at Paterson and was caught behind without scoring, the fifth wicket to fall in the first hour.Broad’s withdrawal from the attack brought no respite with Fletcher taking his side closer to the finishing line with two wickets in successive overs. Wood’s resistance was ended when he lost his middle stump aiming a drive and Brooke Guest was well caught by Moores diving low to his right.Fynn Hudson-Prentice top-edged a pull at Broad, Sam Conners fell to an astonishing one-handed catch by Paterson sprinting from long leg and Aitchison went down swinging to spark wild Nottinghamshire celebrations.
