Agent offers "wonderful" £140,000-a-week Liverpool star to European giants

Whilst change is on the cards this summer, reports suggest that Liverpool could yet get an unexpected departure to hand Arne Slot a frustrating start to life at Anfield in the coming months.

Liverpool transfer news

For the first time in almost a decade, Jurgen Klopp won't be the man in the Anfield dugout at the start of next season as a legendary era comes to an end, making way for a new chapter under Slot. And with that new chapter will undoubtedly come new characters and new heroes at Anfield, as the pending new manager and Michael Edwards look to start with a bang.

Liverpool keen on signing in-demand £9,500-a-week Robertson successor

The Reds are planning ahead…

Reports have already linked the likes of Crysencio Summerville, Goncalo Inacio and Ousmane Diomande with moves in what could be an ideal way for Edwards to steal the headlines in the summer window. Inacio would be a particularly impressive signing, given that Manchester United and Newcastle United are also reportedly interested, and he's still just 22 years old.

It's not been all about incomings, however, with a new era also sparking doubts over the future of star players. Mohamed Salah has already been linked with a summer exit to Saudi Arabia in what is becoming a yearly trend, but it's Darwin Nunez who the Reds may need to worry about after recent updates.

According to Sport in Spain, Nunez has been offered to Barcelona by his agent, Jorge Mendes, to replace Robert Lewandowski should the La Liga giants be seeking one for their ageing forward. The speculation has only been fueled by the Urugyuan himself too after he deleted social media posts from the current Liverpool season, though Fabrizio Romano has since rubbished rumours that any social media behaviour is exit-related.

As the summer approaches, however, unexpected questions are the last thing that Liverpool need at the start of a new era, which means that deciding Nunez's future should be a priority sooner rather than later.

Next season is vital for "wonderful" talent Nunez

There's no doubt that Nunez has been much improved in his second season at Liverpool, but that's not to say the question marks over his consistent quality have gone away entirely amid his hefty £140,000-a-week wage. There have still been moments to forget, games that have passed him by all too easily, and moments that he has not stepped up to carry the responsibility of a top number nine.

In among that though, has been plenty of positives with 18 goals and 13 assists to his name. Whether it be his late double at Newcastle or his last-gasp winner at Nottingham Forest, Nunez has shown more than enough signs of life to suggest that a key player could yet emerge on a consistent enough basis when Slot arrives.

Klopp recognised that quality earlier this season, saying via the Irish Independent: "He had absolutely more than (an) OK first season but he had to adapt, that’s done, and he is settled in the middle of the team.

“Wonderful guy, wonderful boy. He loves to play for this team together with these boys and has quality coming out of his ears, to be honest. It’s like strikers are, they score and then they don’t score. Is he at his absolute peak in general? Not now for us. But can he develop? Yes. Is he a threat all the time? Yes."

Everton were rinsed of £27m by Koeman signing who’s now a free agent

Everton’s financial issues over the last couple of years have been well documented, with the club constantly plagued with off-the-field setbacks.

The Toffees’ reckless nature in the transfer market has undoubtedly contributed to the recent point deductions, with the signings of big-money players who were clearly out of their depth a real key factor.

Yannick Bolasie and Yerry Mina are just two examples, both joining the club for fees over £25m, earning extortionate wages and departing Goodison Park on free transfers.

The list of failed signings in the last decade is endless, with the club easily wasting over £300m on players who haven’t reached the levels expected of them upon their moves to Merseyside.

One player in particular failed to impress at Goodison, leaving the club for a cut-price just one season after his huge move to the club back in the summer of 2017.

Davy Klaassen’s stats at Everton

After joining for a fee of £23.6m from Ajax, attacking midfielder Davy Klaassen arrived at Goodison Park with a lot of excitement after his 14-goal season in the Eredivisie.

However, he failed to make a positive impact during his time on Merseyside, with the midfielder failing to score a single goal during the 2017/18 campaign.

Klaassen also only made 17 appearances during his one season at Goodison, with the Netherlands international failing to live up to the expectations he came with.

He subsequently departed the Toffees in July 2018, to German side Werder Bremen for a fee in the region of £12m, with the club making a loss of £11.6m in less than a year.

Klaassen has gone on to find his feet once again all over Europe, with the midfielder racking up 54 goals and 26 assists since departing Goodison nearly six years ago.

Despite his brilliant return with goals and assists, with the likes of Bremen, Ajax and Inter Milan, the Dutchman now finds himself as a free agent after the expiry of his deal at the San Siro.

It’s safe to say his time in England was a huge disappointment, with his move costing the club a pretty penny despite his relatively short stint on Merseyside.

How much Davy Klaassen earned at Everton

Although Klaassen would only spend a sole year at Everton, when coupling his salary onto his transfer fee only emphasises the terrible deal conducted for the now 31-year-old.

After all, his £70k-per-week wage, as per Capology, was ludicrous when compared to what he offered, but at the time it was considered a fair price for someone who produced the numbers he did in the Eredivisie.

When adding his wages to his transfer fee, it added a further £3.6m to the total sum, bringing the deal to a total of £27.4m. Then, comparing that with the appearances the midfielder mustered, Ronald Koeman's costly purchase actually ended up costing the club £1.7m for every appearance he made.

All things considered, it was an absolute disaster bringing the Dutchman to Goodison Park, with the club desperately wishing they could turn back time and avoid a deal for the now-free agent.

Brenden Aaronson and Leeds United returned from the international break but unfortunately suffered a 1-0 loss to Burnley at Elland Road Saturday.

Burnley, who count former NFL superstar J.J. Watt among their owners, did the damage early as American-born, Italian youth international Luca Koleosho scored in the 18th minute. Anchorman star Will Ferrell, who owns shares in Leeds, was also in attendance.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

This continues a tough month for Aaronson after the 23-year-old returned from a winless trip with the U.S. men's national team in their September camp.

Yet, there could be some optimism for the midfielder with Mauricio Pochettino now officially in the fold as USMNT manager.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Aaronson enjoyed much better fortunes with Leeds in August, being named the Fans' Player of the Month after a sizzling start to the season. This is a far cry from the preseason and past matches when the midfielder was booed at Elland Road.

Man Utd join race for "amazing" defender who’d be cheaper than Branthwaite

Manchester United have joined the race to sign an exciting new defender who would be cheaper than Jarrad Branthwaite, it has been claimed.

Manchester United chasing a centre back

The FA Cup success on Sunday was welcome respite for Erik ten Hag, but did little to mask the dismal Premier League season his side suffered. Finishing eighth, the Red Devils conceded the second most shots of any side in Europe's top five leagues (17.6 per game), more than Luton Town and only just fewer than 20th placed Sheffield United.

One of the key contributing factors to that was of course the defence, which lacked any stability thanks to injuries and is now down to it's bare bones ahead of the summer.

Man Utd make approach to sign "incredible" Martinez partner

Man Utd have made an approach for the talented defender.

ByTom Lever May 29, 2024

Raphael Varane has already announced his departure from the club this summer when his contract comes to an end, while Jonny Evans is expected to do the same with the 36-year-old only ever having been bought in as emergency cover and out of contract this summer.

It leaves the Red Devils looking light at the back, with Casemiro having to have filled in towards the end of the season as injuries restricted Lisandro Martinez to just nine Premier League appearances and forced Ten Hag to rely on teenage defender Willy Kambwala at times after promoting him from the United academy.

Ten Hag's side have been strongly linked with a move for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, but any deal for the youngster is likely to require a significant fee perhaps in excess of that which they shelled out for Harry Maguire in 2019.

With that in mind, reports claim that the Red Devils are also looking elsewhere at potential options, and now they could have found one.

Red Devils eye versatile Barcelona star

That comes in the shape of Barcelona defender Jules Kounde, who is reportedly open to a move away from the Nou Camp this summer. The Frenchman only arrived in Catalonia in 2022, but has struggled to nail down a spot in his favoured centre-back role and has reportedly grown tired of playing at right back.

jules-kounde-liverpool-transfer-joe-gomez-premier-league

That is according to FootballTransfers, who report that the defender is "unhappy playing exclusively as a right-back" and is now "open" to leaving Barcelona this summer. Meanwhile, his biggest backer has left the club with Xavi's departure.

Speaking last month after his side beat PSG, the Spaniard hailed Kounde as "one of the best", adding that he asked for the defender personally.

“He was one of the transfers that I asked for. He’s one of the best defenders in the world right now. Stopping Mbappé was a collective effort. Kounde did amazing against Mbappé but Lamine [Yamal] also helped him a lot”, the Barcelona icon explained.

But with Flick having now taken charge, and Barcelona in need of funds, a 50m euro price tag has been slapped on the Frenchman's head.

The 25-year-old was formerly on Chelsea's radar, but it is the Red Devils credited with an interest this time around. A deal at around £42m would see Barcelona break even on the Frenchman, and it could prove a very savvy piece of business from Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS as they look to rebuild the Manchester United backline.

Just over half the price of any move for Branthwaite, Kounde's arrival could allow funds to be freed up elsewhere at Old Trafford.

Joe Root: Bad light issue 'needs to be addressed' by game's authorities

England’s Test captain, Joe Root, believes the issue of bad light “needs to be addressed” so the game can avoid the farcical scenes witnessed at the Ageas Bowl in recent days.Only 134.3 overs were possible in the second Test – 38.1 of them on the final day – as a combination of bad light and conditions deemed too wet to play conspired to ruin any chance of either England or Pakistan pushing for victory. Only eight Tests in England or Wales in which any play has been possible have been worse hit by such conditions; all but one were not five-day encounters. That left Root calling for a variety of “different things that could be trialled” to avoid such examples in the future. Among the measures Root suggested was earlier start times, the use of a brighter ball and improved floodlights to ensure play could continue regardless of the light.ALSO READ: Crawley makes most of chance as second Test ends in drawBut he cautioned against expecting a change to start times ahead of the final Test of this series, which is scheduled to begin on the same ground on Friday, arguing that agreements had been made with Pakistan ahead of the series and it may be too late to change them.”Maybe we could start half-an-hour earlier if we’ve lost time,” Root said. “You don’t necessarily have to start every game at 10.30am, but maybe if you need to make time up that is something to look at so light isn’t as much of an issue. It’s something to look at. It may be a possibility.”There an MoU [Memorandum of Understanding] that’s been put in place [ahead of this series], so I’m not sure how flexible things are to change. But moving forwards, it is something that could potentially be looked at beyond this series.”Maybe there’s got to be a minimum standard of floodlights and [we should] play on throughout. Maybe we could use a lighter red ball rather than a dark Dukes ball.”There are different things that could be trialled to avoid similar scenarios in future. It’s not very often you lose so much cricket to bad light, but it’s frustrating and a huge talking point. I think it needs to be addressed somewhere, somehow.”At present, every day of Test cricket in England starts at 11am regardless of the amount of overs lost in the game. The ECB has, in the past, argued that to change the start time at short notice – such as the evening before – could leave ticket holders missing the start of play. There have also been concerns expressed at the help an earlier start might provide to seamers able to exploit any dew or other moisture in the pitch or wider environment.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Many of Root’s concerns were echoed by the Pakistan bowling coach, Waqar Younis, who also called for more trials into measures that could mitigate against the problem of bad light.”Worldwide the pink ball is only really being played with on a trial basis as we see if we run into problems,” Waqar said. “In day-night matches, there is strong evidence to suggest the pink ball could work, but in England, only one pink-ball Test has happened.”I don’t yet know how a pink Dukes ball is going to behave in this country. If conditions are overcast and the lights are on, maybe it’ll do too much. The toss becomes very important.”Purely for revenue and entertainment, it’s a promising idea, but everyone will need to adapt. We need to see more pink-ball use in domestic cricket in England to get the full picture. We need further trials in England.”I feel unless the light gets really bad, we can stay out there a bit longer.”Root, meanwhile, said he had sympathy both for the match officials and groundstaff and suggested it was an issue which needed to be addressed “higher up the chain”. ESPNcricinfo understands the ICC cricket committee will review issues around bad light at their next meeting.”I don’t think I’ve ever seen a game be affected by bad light as much as this,” Root said. “Which is very frustrating. But it’s been very wet throughout the week and the ground staff have done everything they can to get it dry.”I do think it’s hard to blame the umpires here. I think there’s something bigger that needs looking up higher up the chain. This is way above my pay grade.”Root also provided some insight into the challenges posed by playing in poor light, suggesting safety was only one of the aspects to consider.”There’s an element of danger that comes into it,” he said. “Sometimes when you are facing someone really quick it can feel a little bit more dangerous.”But sometimes with the bat in hand, if I’m brutally honest, it becomes more challenging [in poor light]. It can be quite hard trying to pick which way a bowler is looking to swing it or you might be trying to spot a googly from a legspinner. That can be frustrating at times.”But it’s the field, square of the wicket, where you feel most vulnerable. You don’t want to be at fault, running in the wrong direction or missing a big chance. Similarly, the umpires might feel in danger as well if someone crunches a pull shot or hits one straight back at them. They have also got to be able to see and make the right decisions on the field.”

Lancashire 322 (Vilas 90, Croft 63) and 96 for 3 (Davies 54) lead Leicestershire 409 for 8 (Slater 172, Ackermann 94, Azad 58) by nine runs Ben Slater hit a career-best 172 and Colin Ackermann 94 as Leicestershire declared with a first-innings lead of 87 before taking three early wickets as opponents Lancashire closed the third day just nine runs ahead in the Bob Willis Trophy match being played at Blackfinch New Road.Keaton Jennings went caught at third slip off Chris Wright for 8, the ball looping off an inside edge and his pads, Josh Bohannon was leg before wicket to a full delivery from Ben Mike for 3, and Alex Davies leg before for 54 missing a pull at a delivery from left-arm spinner Callum Parkinson that went on with the arm to give the Foxes real hope of forcing victory on the final day.Slater, signed by Leicestershire on a two-week loan from Nottinghamshire, shared in a partnership of 165 with Ackermann, a third-wicket record for Leicestershire against Lancashire, beating the 163-run partnership between James Bradshaw and Norman Armstrong at Leicester’s old Aylestone Road ground in 1929.Ackermann was positive from the start when his side resumed on 183 for 2, looking to get forward where possible against an inexperienced bowling attack including three men making their first-class debuts in seamers Ed Moulton and George Balderson, and left-arm spinner Tom Hartley. All bowled straight and to their fields, however, and on a good, dry but slightly slow pitch, Ackermann and Slater found it hard to work the ball to the boundary. Slater kept the scoreboard moving with singles as he worked his way towards 150, going in to lunch on 143 off 318 balls, while Ackermann hit seven fours in reaching 50 off 88 deliveries. Only one chance was created, when Ackermann, on 47, drove a delivery from Balderson that stopped a little in the pitch back towards the young bowler, who was unable to hold the catch very low to his left.It was a different story after the interval as Leicestershire looked to secure a fourth batting bonus point. Having passed 150, Slater lofted Tom Bailey for consecutive sixes over long-on, but a third attempt landed in the hands of Bohannon at deep mid-off.George Rhodes came and went quickly in the search for quick runs, driving Bailey to Dave Vilas at cover, but Ackermann, on 94, looked certain to reach a century of his own until he was called through for an unlikely second run by Tom Taylor and failed to beat Jennings’ throw from the midwicket boundary. When Taylor went lbw hitting across the line at Balderson and Harry Swindells was bowled trying to improvise against Hartley’s left-arm spin, Leicestershire had lost five wickets for 43 runs, but Mike, Klein and Parkinson saw them past 400 before Ackermann declared to ensure the Foxes were able to bowl before tea.Neither Jennings nor Davies were troubled during the seven overs they did bowl before the break, but Jennings’ unfortunate dismissal, followed by those of Bohannon and Davies, means much will depend on Lancashire’s in-form captain Dave Vilas, who was unbeaten on 7 at the close. Before play began, match umpire Alec Swann confirmed Leicestershire seamer Klein had been handed a three-point penalty and a reprimand after being adjudged to have committed a level two offence under Law 43, throwing the ball at another player in an inappropriate and dangerous manner. The incident occurred on the second day of the game, when Klein threw the ball at the stumps but hit Lancashire batsman Danny Lamb on the foot.

Manchester United have a new superstar! Grace Clinton punishes Everton as Marc Skinner's side continue perfect start

It was by no means a classic, but during the fourth minute of the game, Grace Clinton managed to light the game up for a brief spell, in only her second game for the club. The midfielder read Justine Vanhaevermaet's wayward pass, then rushed towards goal and coolly clipped a shot over Courtney Brosnan to score the only goal of the game.

The Belgian defender did make up for her mishap by preventing a late United second when she threw her body in the way of Hinata Miyazawa's shot, and United were kept at bay when trying to extend their lead.

United have subsequently moved up into second in the WSL table, while Everton remain winless, having lost 4-0 to Brighton last weekend.

    DID YOU KNOW?

Clinton's game-winning strike was her second of the season after netting United's third against West Ham last week, and she has continued her incredible form from last season's loan spell at Tottenham.

While on loan in north London she was awarded the Young Player of the Season award, and it has resulted in her returning to Marc Skinner's side.

  • THE MVP

It wasn't just the goal that made Clinton stand out in this game, as she was involved in just about every effective United attack. She was unlucky not to record an assist as well as a goal, and would have done if not for poor finishing from her team-mates. She linked up well with the likes of Ella Toone, with her reading of the game also being key for United's success in Merseyside.

    THE BIG LOSER:

The game just passed Geyse by completely. The Brazilian was marshalled well by Everton's defence and at times she made it too easy for them. She started her season with a goal last weekend but could not have a similar effect on this game, even when found in positive positions.

Southampton could seal "monstrous" ace who’d star alongside Lallana

Southampton coolly and confidently beat Leeds United in one of the most pressurised one-off games in football, winning 1-0 in the Championship play-off final to secure their Premier League status again.

Russell Martin's Saints didn't fluke the slim victory, frustrating and getting under the skin of Daniel Farke's out-of-sorts Whites throughout, whilst also being able to deliver the killer blow when needed courtesy of Adam Armstrong firing home unmarked.

Now, the summer suddenly starts to look very intriguing and interesting for the newly promoted side with a whole host of impressive names now being linked with a switch to St. Mary's to have a go at top-flight football.

Adam Lallana, who was formerly a Southampton youth product, is edging closer to a return – according to reports – and he could be partnered in the centre of the park with this gem if another deal comes to fruition.

Southampton eyeing up permanent capture

According to Southampton Echo journalist Alfie House, Martin's men are very much keen on tieing down Flynn Downes to a permanent deal on the South Coast after an exceptional loan spell this season.

House further states that the Saints will also aim to sign Ryan Fraser on a permanent deal, who has managed 11 goal contributions on loan from Newcastle United in his own right, with Southampton showing they mean business attempting to get so many captures done so early on.

Downes could form an electric duo with Lallana in central midfield for the newly promoted outfit, with the current West Ham United man deployed as a slick operator of the ball who rarely makes a mistake, whilst the now 36-year-old has more of an eye for goal going off his previous Saints exploits.

How Downes and Lallana could feature together

Bagging 60 goals and picking up 45 assists from 265 appearances last time around on the South Coast, there could be some apprehension from Southampton supporters that Lallana might well taint his legendary status at the club so late into his playing days.

Yet, his versatility to play all across the midfield, and even as a winger if necessary, means he will be a useful utility option for the group, and a figure that will be vital for the likes of Downes who aren't as experienced with what is required in the cut and thrust of the top division.

As can be seen by glancing at the table above, Lallana and Downes would complement each other well next season with Downes shining in certain aspects – such as tackles and interceptions – compared to his more experienced counterpart shining going forward in shot-creating actions and touches in the attacking penalty area.

Martin will want the 25-year-old to continue playing with this grit present in his game in the Premier League, having described his star loanee as being "monstrous" earlier in the season for the sheer amount of tackles he managed in a game versus Birmingham City, on top of his composure to rarely misplace a pass.

It was evident in the play-off final as well, seen in this crunching tackle from Downes to kill the Whites coming forward, to ensure Southampton gained a foothold in key moments.

Lallana did only manage to pick up a solitary assist last season donning his now old Brighton and Hove Albion colours, but his game could be raised knowing he's back at his beloved Saints.

It will be an entertaining campaign for those on the South Coast to hopefully savour, as many new faces get lined up to join the ranks.
