Talks open: Liverpool in contact to sign "amazing" £50m Premier League star

Liverpool have made contact with an "amazing" Premier League player over a move to Anfield in the summer transfer window, according to a fresh update.

Liverpool eyeing new centre-back

The Reds' focus last summer had to be on rebuilding the midfield, following a horribly below-par 2022/23 campaign that saw Fabinho and Jordan Henderson struggling in the middle of the park, whereas Naby Keita and Thiago continued to be dogged by injury problems.

Jurgen Klopp oversaw a fantastic transformation of the midfield, signing Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch, and it has allowed Liverpool to return to being a huge force in the Premier League again, as they still search for a legendary quadruple this season.

This summer, it could be the defence that the Reds focus on, albeit without Klopp around, with too much onus on Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate to stay fit currently. Jarell Quansah is still a young player learning his trade, while Joel Matip could leave when his contract expires at the end of the campaign.

Various defenders have been linked with joining Liverpool, including Sporting CP star Goncalo Inacio and Bayer Leverkusen ace Piero Hincapie, both of whom possess the added luxury of being able to do a job at left-back. Meanwhile, highly-rated teenage Lille defender Leny Yoro was linked with the Merseysiders in the January window, and could yet emerge as a target again in the near future.

Liverpool make contact with "amazing" ace

According to a new update from TEAMtalk, Liverpool have contacted Marc Guehi's representatives over a move to the club this summer, with the Crystal Palace centre-back potentially moving on to pastures new.

The report states that "another defensive partner for Van Dijk and Konate is the top priority for the club", and they have "now taken the first concrete step towards" signing the England international at the end of the season.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

Guehi could represent a brilliant option for Liverpool this summer, ticking so many boxes for the Reds, even though Palace will understandably demand huge money for his signature, possibly £50m as the report states.

Still only 23 years of age, the Englishman has proven himself in the Premier League over a consistent period of time now, and perhaps more importantly than anything, he is robust in terms of not getting injured often, missing just nine games across four years.

It could be argued that Guehi deserves to start for England alongside John Stones at Euro 2024 this summer, and he has been hailed by Harry Maguire, who said:

"Marc has done amazing. I think he left Chelsea at an amazing time when he had to play football. When you watch him play he doesn't look like a young boy playing football.

"He's a captain of Crystal Palace. He’s going to have a long career in the game. He has all the attributes you need to be a centre-back. The friendly in the first half at Scotland unfortunately he had to come off. He's such a young boy playing with so much maturity."

That being said, the English premium that can happen when signing homegrown players could mean that Inacio and Hincapie represent greater value for money, but the Palace ace has the advantage of knowing the Premier League inside out.

Patience pays off as England try new approach against New Zealand

It took 2,000 years to build the Great Wall of China and 1,600 years to build Stonehenge. The Sagrada Familia – started in 1882 – is still not complete. And let’s not even mention Brexit. The point? Sometimes it takes time to build something worthwhile (which is very much not a political statement about Brexit). And sometimes, during that process, you have to be patient.Certainly spectators at the Bay Oval were obliged to be patient on the first day of the series between New Zealand and England. While there were moments during the tenure of Trevor Bayliss when England were accused of reacting to every adversity by playing ever more aggressively – like speeding through fog to get past it – there were moments here when their caution was like deciding to park the car and walk. Joe Root and Joe Denly took 21 balls to get off the mark. Ben Stokes took 15.England spectators, in particular, have probably been spoiled in recent times. Many of their Test wins have been almost impossibly unlikely and, as a consequence, entertaining. Take the victory against Ireland that was achieved despite being bowled out by lunch on the first day. Or the victory against Australia at Leeds that came despite having been bowled out for 67 in their first innings. Even when they are bad – and they were pretty bad in Barbados – they are entertaining. And all those games were just this year. But this is what Test cricket used to be like. And, on a slow wicket, against a disciplined attack this was probably the best approach they could take. So while there were moments – and by moments, think of several hours – with bowlers aiming wide of off stump in the hope of tempting the batsmen and England simply letting the ball sail through, when it seemed the game was in something approaching stalemate, England eventually started to pull away from New Zealand in a final session that realised 120 runs. There had only been 121 in the first two combined. You do wonder what Bayliss, no doubt keeping an eye on scores from his hotel room in the UAE, would have made of it, though. He used to reason that the dangers of such a cautious approach were that it only took a couple of wicket-taking balls and all that work was wasted with little to show for it. And maybe, had Stokes been held at slip on 63, or Rory Burns taken in the slips on 37, Bayliss would have been proved right. But they weren’t and, with Stokes starting to wrestle the initiative away from New Zealand, the day finished with England perhaps slightly the better placed of the two teams. That’s not just a reflection of the scores, either. It’s a reflection of the amount of work invested by both sides. The New Zealand bowlers, despite their obvious stamina, are human. And there is a quick turnaround – just three days – between games. The miles put in their legs here could yet turn out to be crucial in the coming days. There is every chance they will be pulling their boots on for a fifth session here.Maybe there were times on day one when we witnessed an over-correction from England. Times when it became apparent that they were learning a new approach and times when they got it slightly wrong. Take Root’s innings: he is masterful at rotating the strike; as adept at anyone of nudging and deflecting and picking up singles. Yet here, perhaps wanting to provide an example to his team, he became almost stroke-less and was eventually persuaded into a loose shot.Such moments are inevitable. It doesn’t mean the approach is wrong. It just means England have to get better at the way they execute such plans. Because despite all their patience, three of the wickets that did fall in the day – Burns’, Root’s and Joe Denly’s – all owed a little to frustration. But it’s worth remembering that England tried the Bayliss approach for the best part of five years. It gave them great days and some decent success. But they are the No. 3 side in the Test rankings and, if they want to rise higher, they probably have to show a more sophisticated approach. What we saw here was the start of a new era for England cricket. Nobody should mistake them for the finished article.Several batsmen can feel satisfied with their day’s work. Denly, in particular, may well have done enough to secure his trip to South Africa. This was his fourth half-century in six Test innings and was, perhaps, as assured as any of them. His six off Mitchell Santner, a bit of a luxury player at this stage, was the shot of the day: a perfectly timed lofted drive that he bore plenty of beauty and no brawn. And while Denly and Burns, in particular, may feel they failed to capitalise on the foundations they had built, they can console themselves with the knowledge that they resisted a fine attack and built a strong platform for their team. There’s a lot of work left to do – 400 might be considered par in such conditions – but with Stokes set and more batting to come, England could be quietly satisfied with their first day of Test cricket under Chris Silverwood.

Rangers fumbled on "one of the best" who is now outperforming Cantwell

Glasgow Rangers return to domestic action this weekend following the recent international break, facing Hibernian in the Premiership at Ibrox.

Philippe Clement led his side to victory over the Easter Road outfit just a few weeks ago in what was a bad-tempered Scottish Cup clash in Edinburgh, and another win would allow the club to carry on their momentum into the final weeks of the season.

Injuries have played their part since the turn of the year, but it surely won't be long before the Belgian manager welcomes back the likes of Danilo and Abdallah Sima into the first-team squad.

With just nine games to go in the Premiership, Rangers and Celtic are battling it out at the summit in what has been the fiercest title race since 2011.

Clement will be hoping his star players can continue to perform between now and May as the chance to secure a first treble in over 20 years is within their grasp.

Rangers midfielder Todd Cantwell.

Todd Cantwell returned from injury to enjoy a brief cameo against Benfica prior to the break and the Englishman will be key over the coming weeks.

Todd Cantwell’s statistics this season

It's safe to say that Cantwell enjoyed an excellent start to life in Glasgow upon joining the club last January. Under Michael Beale, the former Norwich City starlet scored six goals and registered five assists in just 20 matches during the second half of the 2022/23 season.

The Light Blues failed to win a trophy, but hopes were high heading into the current campaign, especially if Cantwell could resume where he left off.

The opening few weeks were a disaster, however. Not only did the club miss out on the Champions League group stages, but they lost three of their first seven Premiership matches, meaning they slipped eight points behind Celtic.

Cantwell managed to register just one assist before suffering a knee injury against Celtic during the first Old Firm clash of the season, which ruled him out for seven games.

By the time he was fit enough to return, Clement had taken over from Beale, meaning Cantwell had a new manager to impress.

During the early stages of his tenure, the Englishman was often used out wide on the right flank, a position where he failed to really showcase his true talents, with the nadir coming against Aris Limassol in the 1-1 draw, where he was subbed off after just 36 minutes.

Since then, however, Cantwell has gone on to score five times in the league while being utilised in his favoured number ten slot.

Among his teammates, the 26-year-old currently ranks fourth for goals and assists in the top flight, along with ranking fourth for key passes per game (1.6) and fifth for successful dribbles per game (1.1), showcasing his talents in an attacking midfield role this term.

While he has been impressive recently, the Ibrox side had the chance to sign a player towards the end of the last season who is now currently outperforming Cantwell for his new club – Malik Tillman.

Malik Tillman’s Rangers statistics

The American attacking midfielder joined on a season-long loan deal from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2022, and it looked like a shrewd piece of business by Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Despite being only 20 years old, Tillman enjoyed a solid start to life at Ibrox, scoring against USG in the Champions League qualifiers, while setting up Antonio Colak’s winner against PSV Eindhoven, which sent the Gers through to the group stages for the first time since 2010/11.

Former Rangers midfielder Malik Tillman.

As the season wore on, the youngster continued to shine. By the end of the campaign, he had scored 12 goals and grabbed five assists while ranking third in the squad for big chances created (12) in the top flight, third for successful dribbles per game (1.5) and fifth for shots on target per game (0.7), demonstrating how effective he was in the opposition third.

He was hailed by teammate John Lundstram after a game against Aberdeen, who said: “Tell him how good he can be and how good he is. Because he’s phenomenal, his talent is up there with one of the best young talents I’ve seen. Stick with him, rather than saying he needs to be dropped if he has one bad game.”

Rangers had the chance to secure his signature for around £5m, but Bayern preferred to keep him, loaning him to PSV this season, where he has exceeded all expectations.

What Malik Tillman is doing now

The 21-year-old has taken the experience he gained during his time at Rangers last season and put it to good use for the Dutch giants this term.

Across 32 games for the Eredivisie side, Tillman has scored six goals and registered ten assists in all competitions as PSV look set to win the league following an impressive campaign.

The former Rangers gem has shone domestically and ranks fourth for goals and assists (12), sixth for key passes per game (1.9) and fifth for successful dribbles per game (1.5), suggesting that the American is enjoying life in Eindhoven.

These performances currently see the attacking midfielder valued at €13.7m (£12m) according to Football Transfers, while it could continue to rise over the coming months if he ends the season strongly.

It appears as though the Light Blues have missed out on signing a player who could have made them a stunning profit in the transfer market.

Not only that, but he is currently outshining Cantwell this season and his goals could have proven crucial for the side as they look to end Celtic’s recent dominance of Scottish football.

His future looks unclear, yet if he can maintain his current form, there might be a chance for the young talent to make an impression on the new Bayern Munich head coach ahead of the 2024/25

campaign.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

Tillman was raw during his spell at Rangers, but his potential had no ceiling. PSV are the beneficiaries of that now, and they could well make Bayern an offer they can't refuse for the American.

Wolves readying transfer offer to sign "remarkable" £40m+ star

With Wolverhampton Wanderers enjoying a successful maiden campaign under Gary O'Neil, it is clear that the club are eager to back their manager by giving him some much-needed reinforcements this summer.

Despite being rarely shy to splash the cash on a number nine, it is clear that recent high-profile strikers to arrive at Molineux have failed to hit the ground running.

Despite spending a club record £35m fee to secure his services, Fabio Silva struggled in the Midlands and was eventually shipped off for a loan spell with Rangers. It was a similar story with the 2019 signing of Patrick Cutrone, with the £25m fee spent on the Italian forward yielding just two Premier League goals.

Wolves have had some success this season with the partnership of Hwang Hee-chan and Matheus Cunha yielding a combined 19 goals in the Premier League. However, it is still clear that the side is crying out for an out-and-out number nine.

Update on Wolves' Nketiah pursuit

As first reported by Football Insider's Pete O'Rourke, Wolves are now set to launch a bid to sign Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah. Sources have told the outlet that Crystal Palace and Brentford are also set to join Wolves in the race to secure the 24-year-old's services, giving the Midlands outfit competition for his signature.

It had previously been reported that Wolves expressed an interest in the striker, though this development sees O'Neil's men set to launch a formal bid in order to get their man. The Gunners have reportedly set a minimum price tag of £40m for Nketiah – something of a steal in the modern transfer market.

Sitting on the fringes of the Gunners' starting XI for most of his senior career, it is reported that Kai Havertz's return to form, as well as Arsenal's pursuit of Ivan Toney, is what has led to Nketiah pushing for a move away from north London.

Whilst Nketiah's stats for Arsenal don't make for great reading, it has long been common knowledge that the 24-year-old is a quality striker starved of genuine game time. Nketiah stands as the all-time top scorer for England's under-21 side, breaking a record held by Alan Shearer for decades.

August 2023 saw Nketiah earn his first call-up to the senior side, and Three Lions' manager Gareth Southgate was quick to heap praise on the forward, telling the press:

“With Eddie coming in, it is an area where we want to have a look at him. Young player with a lot of pedigree, really good finisher, and the record goalscorer in the Under-21s.”

Club manager Mikel Arteta has been similarly complimentary of the striker, commending his "remarkable" performances earlier in the season.

Nketiah continued his good form at the start of this season by scoring his first career hat-trick in the Gunners' 5-0 thrashing of Sheffield United back in October. A glimpse into the quality possessed by the forward, it is clear that under the stewardship of a manager like O'Neil, Nketiah could finally fulfil his potential as a genuine Premier League star.

MLS star Zimmerman is filling the captain’s armband, as one of three overage players in U23 ranks, and he has told of the goals being set in the U.S. camp: “We have our eyes on a gold medal. It’s a unique tournament since there are only 16 teams, so the fact that if you get out of your group, you’re in a quarter-final, and if you win that game, you’re playing for a medal even if you lose the semi-final. It just amps up so quickly and that’s really different from a lot of other major tournaments. Games are every three days and we’re going to have to rely on everyone with the reduced roster size to make it happen.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

A medal of any kind with be considered success for the USMNT, with Nashville SC defender Zimmerman adding: “It would be a huge. It’s such an important moment for everyone on this roster to do something special as a collective, to do something special for their individual careers. It’s a big opportunity and it’s just a matter of whether we take it or not. We got to watch the movie Miracle for a team bonding event and a lot of the guys hadn’t seen it yet. I guess it was before their time, but it’s such a good reminder that you have such a great opportunity and you got to go out there and take it.”

New Zealand left-arm quick Neil Wagner has moved up to No.3 among bowlers in the ICC Test rankings. He gained five places after bagging eight wickets, including a five-for in the second innings, to lead New Zealand to victory in the first-ever Test in Mount Maunganui. Wagner’s team-mate BJ Watling, who became the first New Zealand wicketkeeper to make a Test double-hundred, shot up 12 spots to be placed 12th among Test batsmen.Watling had soaked up 473 balls in Mount Maunganui – only Sri Lanka’s Brendon Kuruppu has faced more balls than the New Zealander among wicketkeeper-batsmen in a Test innings. Watling’s effort took his points tally to a career-best 693. Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne also reached career-best points of 684 and slotted in at 21 – nine places behind Watling.Labuschagne’s 185 in the Brisbane Test was central to Australia securing an innings victory over Pakistan. David Warner, who endured a horrid Ashes series in England, opened the home Test summer with 154 and consequently gained six places to move to 17th. Steven Smith continues to be the No.1-ranked Test batsman with 931 points. India captain Virat Kohli is hot on his heels, with 928 points, having hit a century in the first-ever pink-ball Test in India.England captain Joe Root, meanwhile, dropped out of the top ten for the first time since August 2014.

Uh oh: European paper drops news on McKenna possibly leaving Ipswich

As things stand, Ipswich Town are on course to secure sensational back-to-back promotions to reach the Premier League under Kieran McKenna. But that success could come at the ultimate cost with a European club now eyeing a move for their impressive manager.

Kieran McKenna's Ipswich future

It's no surprise that McKenna has been linked with a move away. A manager of his calibre, who has transformed Ipswich, is destined for the top. It just seems a matter of when and not if he'll become a top-flight manager, whether that is with Ipswich or elsewhere in years to come.

Championship Table: Latest standings for the 2024/25 season

Latest English Football League Championship standings 2024/25.

ByStephan Georgiou Apr 22, 2025

Crystal Palace were, of course, reportedly interested in securing his signature to replace Roy Hodgson earlier this year, before eventually turning to former Eintracht Frankfurt boss Oliver Glasner. McKenna remained at Portman Road and now looks set to finish the Championship promotion job that he started.

Amid any potential celebrations, however, clubs will undoubtedly begin to circle once more as the manager is left weighing up his options yet again. Among the clubs that could circle is VfB Stuttgart, who have enjoyed an excellent Bundesliga campaign so far this season. But, like Ipswich, Stuttgart's success could come at a managerial cost, with Sebastian Hoeness already linked with the Bayern Munich job.

Sebastian Hoeness for Stuttgart.

Now, according to Sport Bild via Sport Witness, Director of Football Fabian Wohlgemuth and Stuttgart have placed McKenna on their shortlist of options to replace Hoeness should they need to this summer. Given that Hoeness has taken the Bundesliga club from 16th all the way up to third this season and just four points adrift of Bayern Munich, he would be some act to follow. But McKenna has more than proven his credentials at Portman Road.

In a summer of mass managerial change, McKenna could complete a shock switch to deal Ipswich a major blow.

Ipswich can't afford to lose McKenna

It almost goes without saying just how vital it is that Ipswich keep hold of McKenna for as long as possible. He has been the key to their recent rise and he is the one who is most likely to unlock the Premier League doors sooner rather than later. If Ipswich do fail in their bid for promotion, however, then luring McKenna away should be far easier, given his own ambitions of managing at the best level.

Stuttgart are an ideal next choice too. Whilst on paper, they may seem an unorthodox choice, Stuttgart's rise isn't dissimilar to that of Ipswich's, who also went from a struggling side to one of their division's best teams under the guidance of a young manager. Now, McKenna is perfectly placed to pick up where Hoeness potentially leaves off this summer, should Stuttgart need to make their move.

What's more, the Ipswich Town manager's preferred system also uses a 4-2-3-1 like Honess' does in another concerning similarity for those at Portman Road hoping to keep the man who has already achieved so much at the club. As things stand, McKenna's future is at Ipswich, but if Stuttgart are in need ot a new manager this summer, then the promotion hopefuls will have every right to be concerned.
