Nottingham Forest struck gold on “bargain” sensation, he only cost £15m

Nottingham Forest aren't shy of a transfer or two, as demonstrated by their dealings in the window since their promotion back to the Premier League in May 2022.

Since beating Huddersfield Town at Wembley, the Reds have made 34 new additions, with owner Evangelos Marinakis investing over £200m on new players, helping establish themselves as a modern-day Premier League outfit.

Players such as Taiwo Awoniyi, Morgan Gibbs-White and Ibrahim Sangare have all broken Forest's transfer record within the last two years, showcasing the owner's ambition to take the club forward.

Ibrahim Sangare

Not all of Forest's signings have been successful, however, with players such as Emmanuel Dennis and Jonjo Shelvey joining for hefty fees and wages, but failing to provide value for money – their pair both now out on loan away from the City Ground

However, one player has proven to be a brilliant piece of business after joining the club in July 2023 as a replacement for a one-time fan favourite.

How much Nottingham Forest paid for Anthony Elanga

The Reds forked out a reported £15m on a deal to sign winger Anthony Elanga – with the Swedish proving to be a replacement for Brennan Johnson after the Forest academy graduate joined fellow Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur for £47.5m.

Over six months on from the transfer, it looks as though the Reds have conducted an astute piece of business for a player who is just 21, with Jamie Redknapp branding the deal as a "bargain".

Anthony Elanga.

He's already featured 13 times for Sweden, with the winger currently enjoying his best season in England's top flight. Elanga's scored five goals and registered seven assists in his 24 Premier League appearances during his time at the City Ground.

The former Manchester United youngster made an instant impact under then-boss Steve Cooper during the 2-1 defeat against Arsenal at the Emirates with the Swede's bursting run setting up Awoniyi to fire home past Aaron Ramsdale.

Since his debut, the winger has gone from strength to strength, impressing against sides such as Chelsea, Newcastle United and Luton Town after getting either a goal or an assist in those encounters.

Anthony Elanga's market value in 2024

Elanga has been pivotal for Forest in their attempts to maintain their top-flight status for a third successive season, with the winger the only Reds player to reach double figures for combined goals and assists.

He's also averaged 0.4 assists per 90 in the Premier League this season – a stat that ranks him within the top 9% of all attackers in Europe's top five leagues. The 21-year-old has impressed with his direct running, averaging 3.8 progressive carries per game – the most of anyone in the Forest squad.

His performances on Trentside have seen his market value soar to £26m, as per CIES Football Observatory- a figure that is higher than striker Awoniyi whose value remains around the £17m mark, the fee which the club paid for him in the summer of 2022.

Erik ten Hag's side appear to have missed a trick on their former player, with the youngster proving himself to be a brilliant Premier League footballer with the Swede amassing more goal contributions than £86m winger Antony – who is yet to score or assist in the league this season.

The Red Devils' trash has therefore proven to be Forest's treasure.

Azad and Cosgrove set platform for Leicestershire before Sanderson strikes

Leicestershire 276 for 8 (Azad 86, Cosgrove 65) v Northamptonshire
Opener Hassan Azad passed 1,000 championship runs for the season as Leicestershire built a solid first-innings score after being put in by promotion-chasing Northamptonshire at the Fischer County Ground.Azad made 86, sharing a partnership of 122 for the third wicket with Mark Cosgrove as the Foxes reached an imposing 150 for 2. But Ben Sanderson produced the ball of the day to bowl the in-form Cosgrove for a fine 65 before Luke Procter picked up two wickets in two balls to ensure the visitors remained very much in the game. The Foxes lost captain Paul Horton early, Brett Hutton finding the right-hander’s edge with just his second ball of the day, and Alex Wakely taking a low catch at first slip. The pitch was playing well, however, and Colin Ackermann was understandably disappointed when, having reached 16 and beginning to play fluently, he hit Gareth Berg’s first delivery in Northamptonshire colours straight to Rob Newton at point to leave Leicestershire on 28 for 2.Azad and Mark Cosgrove raised a 50 partnership off 77 balls, but Azad did have one fortunate escape when on 34 he clipped a Hutton in-swinger to leg gully, only for New Zealand international Doug Bracewell, signed by Northants for the final three championship games of the season, to drop the chance.Azad and Cosgrove extended their third-wicket partnership well into three figures before Cosgrove, who had hit eleven boundaries and looked in wonderful touch, had his off-bail removed by a fine delivery from Sanderson which straightened off the seam.Procter then bowled Azad off the inside edge before swinging the next ball back in to win a leg before decision against Neil Dexter. George Rhodes, making his Leicestershire debut after joining the county from Worcestershire, dug in, compiling useful partnerships with Harry Swindells, Callum Parkinson and Chris Wright, before reaching an unbeaten half-century shortly before the close.”I didn’t set out with a target at the start of the season, but it means a lot to have achieved the 1,000 run milestone,” said Azad. “There was a little bit of seam movement early and it was hard work, but as the ball got older it came on a bit better, and in the afternoon session, especially with ‘Cozzie’ in his stride, scoring got a little bit easier. Well, for him, anyway!”They bowled really well to bring it back, Procter in particular, but George Rhodes played a really good and hard-working innings to lift us to a pretty good score. Hopefully we can get a few more and really give our bowlers something to bowl at.”Northants bowler Gareth Berg said: “It was fun to get a wicket with my first ball, even if it wasn’t quite the way I’d have liked to. We bowled a bit of a mixed bag overall, but we brought it back.”It wasn’t an obvious decision to bowl first, but we felt if there was anything to come out of the wicket it would be on the first day. We’ll come back tomorrow and hopefully end it quickly.”

Journalist drops teasing Tuchel to West Ham hint after Bayern statement

West Ham's rumoured interest in former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is refusing to go away, and it is believed their chances of appointing him may be even greater after some news this week.

Moyes under pressure as Tuchel linked with West Ham job

Time is running out for under-fire boss David Moyes to convince both club hierarchy and supporters that he is the right man to take them forward.

The Hammers have been linked with a new manager.

ByEmilio Galantini Feb 21, 2024

Moyes put an end to their near-40-year wait for a piece of major silverware last season, guiding West Ham to a Europa Conference League triumph in Prague, but their league form has been average at best since 2022.

West Ham flirted with relegation last season and have endured a torrid start to 2024, winning zero games in all competitions so far as the pressure piles on Moyes to turn things around quickly.

The Scotsman's contract expires this summer, and it is believed West Ham have been assessing managerial alternatives to Moyes, including Tuchel. There are some hopes that West Ham could sway Tuchel into a return to London, following a successful stint with Chelsea, where he won the Champions League in 2021.

Some big news came to light on the 50-year-old's future at current club Bayern this week as well, with the Bavarians deciding to part company this summer as they find themselves far behind Bayer Leverkusen in the race for Bundesliga title glory.

"In a good, open discussion, we came to the decision to end our working relationship by mutual agreement in the summer," said FC Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen.

"Our goal is to pursue a new footballing direction with a new head coach for the 2024/25 season. Until then, every individual at the club is expressly called upon to achieve the maximum possible in the Champions League and Bundesliga."

In light of this decision, journalist Dean Jones has dropped a teasing hint about the prospect of West Ham hiring Tuchel after all.

Journalist drops teasing Tuchel to West Ham hint

He says Tuchel to West Ham may just "fall into place" following this statement, suggesting his move to the London Stadium is a real possibility.

Despite his tenure at Bayern ending somewhat unceremoniously, Tuchel has still been praised for being an "unbelievable manager" by players to have worked under him – like defender Ben Chilwell.

"As players we have full confidence in the manager – we know we’re not going to get a better manager here. I’m not just saying it. He’s an unbelievable manager in all aspects and I think he has a lot of trust in us as well," Chilwell said.

"Now there is that stability, everything that could have potentially been tricky last season has all been resolved, so it’s up to us to work and try to get that consistency on the pitch, which is only going to happen if we put the work in away from match days."

Shakib Al Hasan's masterclass sees Bangladesh through

He made an unbeaten 70 off 45 balls, as he rode out the pressure created by Afghanistan’s spinners, even as wickets kept falling at the other end

The Report by Mohammad Isam21-Sep-2019Shakib Al Hasan’s calculated counterattack helped Bangladesh win a tense game by four wickets in Chattogram, marking their first win over Afghanistan in a T20 in five years. Shakib’s knock helped his side chase down 139 after they were struggling at 104 for 6 in the 16th over, with the captain batting on 54.Shakib finished on an unbeaten 70 off 45 balls with eight fours and a six, as he rode out the pressure created by Afghanistan’s spinners, even as wickets kept falling at the other end.Shakib strikes down RashidShakib finished on top in the battle of the captains. With Bangladesh needing 27 off 18 balls, Shakib turned the game Bangladesh’s way by hitting Rashid Khan for a four and a six in an 18-run over that left them needing just nine off the last two overs.Rashid had gone off the field in the eighth over with a hamstring niggle. He returned to bowl the 14th over and removed Mahmudullah for 6, before dismissing Afif Hossain for 2 in his next over, leaving Bangladesh six down. When Rashid returned for the 18th over, Mosaddek Hossain started with a four past short third man before Shakib muscled the ball over midwicket twice, first for a four and then a six that landed in the stands.Bangladesh’s seniors to the rescueBangladesh lost their openers within the first four overs which left them at 12 for 2. Mujeeb Ur Rahman had Liton Das caught for 4 in the third over, and in the next over Najmul Hossain Shanto became Naveen-ul-Haq’s maiden T20I wicket as he chipped a slower ball to Rashid at midwicket.Shakib provided the relief for Bangladesh by striking two fours to end the Powerplay on 28 for 2. He picked up the singles and twos on offer and brought up a calculated fifty off 35 balls in the 15th over. He added 58 runs for the third wicket with Mushfiqur Rahim, who survived in the tenth over when substitute Najeeb Tarakai, on for Rashid, dropped a catch on the leg side. Mushfiqur, however, fell in the very next over when he dragged a pull off Karim Janat to deep midwicket for 26.Yet another strong start for AfghanistanAfghanistan’s openers put up yet another strong show. Rahmanullah Gurbaz was lucky to be dropped on 1 in the second over, but that hardly stopped the Afghanistan openers from going big. Hazratullah Zazai struck Shafiul Islam for two fours in the fourth over and then blasted Mahmudullah for two fours and a six in a 16-run over to round off a good Powerplay. They took turns to hit three more sixes in the next three overs. Gurbaz then connected with a reverse sweep off Mosaddek for six, stretching the run rate further despite the end of the Powerplay.Collapse dents final flourishBut after the 75-run opening stand ended, Afghanistan lost their next six wickets for 39 runs. Hazratullah’s wicket in the tenth over, after he made a quick 47 off 35 balls, triggered the collapse. After Afif had Hazratullah top-edge to short fine leg, he removed Asghar Afghan for a second-ball duck.Gurbaz was caught and bowled by Mustafizur Rahman for 29 before Shakib had Mohammad Nabi lbw for 4. A run-out soon removed Gulbadin Naib, and Najibullah Zadran and Janat then fell in successive overs, as Afghanistan meandered to 114 for 7 in the 17th over. They managed only two fours in the 31 runs they scored in the last five overs.

WBBL will be 'a fantastic opportunity' – Nida Dar

Featuring in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) is going to be “a fantastic opportunity” for Nida Dar after she became the first Pakistan women’s player to be signed for the league, by Sydney Thunder. The opportunity, she says, will help her raise her game as the Women’s T20 World Cup is less than six months away.Dar, 32, has played 96 T20Is and 71 ODIs, her last series being the T20I matches in South Africa where she finished with five wickets and scored 192 runs in five matches. Her T20I strike rate of 96.27 is the highest for a Pakistan women’s player among those who have batted at least five times in the format.”This is a great honour to represent Pakistan in a league where all top cricketers are playing in Australia,” Dar told ESPNcricinfo. “Being a first Pakistani to be there is wonderful for me and for the country. It’s a fantastic opportunity for me and I will the make best out of it. This is not only going to help me raise my game personally but I will be learning a lot…game plans, thought process and all my experience is going to help my [Pakistan] team-mates.”The basics of cricket are the same everywhere but it’s the standard and the competition level that makes a difference. Big Bash is an amazing league and playing in it with all the top players in the world in one place is what any player dreams of. The standard indeed is one step ahead of us in Pakistan so with this opportunity I know I have to play hard and after the season I will bring back a lot of experience which is going to help everyone here.”The door opened for Dar after India’s T20I captain Harmanpreet Kaur didn’t renew her ties with the Thunder as India’s month-long tour of the Caribbean is going to clash with the WBBL, and the Indian players, including Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues, wanted to manage their workload before the T20 World Cup early next year. Harmanpreet had been a key player in the Thunder line-up since the 2016-17 season.”I have a great regard for Harmanpreet Kaur…she is a top player and someone I look up to,” Dar said. “I know I am going to replace her in the squad and I understand the level of expectations from me. I have worked so hard over the years and I’m in my prime form. The balance between my batting and bowling is very important. I do enjoy my batting but it’s more about the role what I am asked to play. I adapt quickly. Harmanpreet is a wonderful player with sound technique and her power-hitting is amazing. I know the challenge and filling in for her will be a great responsibility and I will try not to make them miss her.”The grounds [in Australia] are a lot bigger and one has to adapt to that. But the ball skids very fast there too, with the bounce and that is ideal [for batting]. You don’t need to push hard while batting, it is about technique and timing the ball. I am prepared for the challenge.”Dar is one of Pakistan’s most experienced players, having made her international debut in 2010, and has been one of their main players in the last decade. No Pakistan woman has taken more T20I wickets than her 88, and she ranks fourth in ODIs with 66 wickets after Sana Mir, Sadia Yousuf and Asmavia Iqbal.”I am in the 30s now but with the kind of exposure I have, I am more sensible and in control of my game,” she said. “It’s not about age actually, it’s about the passion and fitness required for the game and the guidance by my coaching staff. That is pushing me in the right direction. Fitness has become a top priority these days and no matter what age you are, you have to be fit.”Fitness is going to dictate how long you can play. I have lost weight recently, I was 62.5kgs and I have lost almost 6.5kgs in one week and now I am more active than ever.”Pakistan women’s next assignment is against Bangladesh – from October 26 to November 4 – and the PCB has exempted Dar from the series so that she gets T20 exposure with international players in the WBBL ahead of the T20 World Cup in 2020.

Southampton dud who earns double Smallbone’s wages must be ditched soon

Southampton just about got over the line away at Birmingham City on Saturday, dramatically winning 4-3 courtesy of a last-gasp Joe Aribo strike from off the bench.

Russell Martin would've been the most relieved man in St Andrew's when one of his last roll-of-the-dice substitutes buried their late chance, with the stuttering automatic promotion candidates ecstatic to secure the three points after losing three of their last four games before this clash.

Will Smallbone also stood out in the midfield away at the Blues, tallying up two assists in the barnstorming contest to more than play his part in the exhilarating match swinging in Southampton's favour at full-time.

Yet, there's one figure in Martin's camp at St. Mary's currently earning double Smallbone's wage despite featuring just once all season.

This could see the 38-year-old manager bin the dud soon, freeing up significant space in the wage bill in the process.

Alex McCarthy's wage at Southampton

Making just one EFL Cup appearance this term to date – where he shipped three goals to League Two Gillingham Town – it's fair to say Alex McCarthy's £50k per week pay packet with the Saints is rather extortionate.

McCarthy was only present for nine of Southampton's games in all competitions last season too as the South Coast club suffered relegation, further exposing the goalkeeper's hefty salary to be a mind-boggling amount to keep paying up.

Southampton'sAlexMcCarthyin action

Keeping just 35 clean sheets in total for the Saints over 139 total appearances, the time could well be right to offload McCarthy soon to then better utilise the money elsewhere in bolstering the Southampton squad especially if promotion is achieved.

Many members of Martin's promotion-chasing squad could well be seeking a pay increase too, with Smallbone just one face who could clamour for more money being on a meagre £25k per week compared to the reserve shot-stopper.

Wage Burners

Football FanCast's Wage Burners series explores the salaries of the modern-day game.

Alex McCarthy's wage compared to the Southampton squad

When casting an eye over the wage bill at the Championship side, McCarthy comes in as the joint fifth-highest earner currently at the club – the likes of Adam Armstrong, Jan Bednarek, Stuart Armstrong and goalscoring hero Joe Aribo all bettering the Saints outcast.

Yet, that quartet are regular first-teamers compared to the 34-year-old who hasn't tasted a single minute of league action under Martin this campaign.

Southampton top earners – 2023/24 season

1. Joe Aribo – £70k per week

2. Stuart Armstrong – £65k per week

3. Jan Bednarek – £60k per week

4. Adam Armstrong – £55k per week

5. David Brooks – £50k per week

5. Alex McCarthy – £50k per week

Sourced by Capology

McCarthy astoundingly comes in on a higher wage than Martin's first-choice goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu, the former Manchester City keeper notching up ten clean sheets as a permanent fixture in his manager's starting elevens in the second tier.

The cast away 34-year-old doesn't even have a spot on the bench anymore, with the Saints boss preferring to give Joe Lumley fleeting starts here and there as his back-up over the £50k per week outsider.

It could well be that McCarthy is still a remnant of Southampton's hay day in the Premier League where inflated wages were commonplace, with the likes of Theo Walcott and Danny Ings demanding handsome £75k per week wages each despite not offering much for the Saints.

McCarthy's time as a high earner could come to an end soon, however, as Martin's young and hungry Saints bid for promotion and look towards a bright future back in the top flight.

NSWE mean business: Reporter shares big 9-figure Aston Villa transfer plan

Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz could hold the keys to any of Unai Emery's transfer plans this summer, it has been revealed.

UCL qualification to ease Villa's FFP woes

Though the Villans are flying in the Premier League, they are looking over their shoulder when it comes to financial fair play. The Midlands outfit posted losses of £119.6m after tax compared to a £0.3m profit last season in their latest accounts, which has sparked concerns that they may be forced to sanction departures this summer, despite reassurances from the board that 'these figures are in line with the strategic business plan'.

NSWE ready to make Aston Villa bid for "warrior" Emery has signed before

Could it be a return to the Premier League?

ByBen Browning Mar 6, 2024

Qualifying for Europe's Premium competition would certainly help, with the Champions League offering an excellent financial incentive to its participants. For comparison, the Conference League offers just £500,000 for a group stage win and £5m for winning the entire competition, which pales in comparison to £2.4m for a Champions League group stage win and £18m for winning the whole thing.

Villa are well placed to reach that competition, currently five points ahead of Tottenham in fifth and a massive 11 points clear of 6th placed Manchester United. Though Tottenham have a game in hand on the Villans, the pair meet at Villa Park on Sunday, which will give Emery's side the chance to stretch their lead even further and all but book their place in next season's Champions League.

Luiz part of NSWE's big transfer plan

With major signings planned though, even qualifying for the Champions League may not be enough to balance the books, and sales may be required. As per Football Insider, Douglas Luiz will be the man most likely to make his departure from Villa Park. Unai Emery values his midfield maestro around £100m and there is thought to be interest from Manchester City and Arsenal, with the latter having made three bids for the Brazilian back in 2022.

Should Luiz depart and Villa qualify for the Champions League, it is added that the powers that be in the Midlands would be willing to sanction a massive £200m spending spree this summer, with the ultimate aim of joining the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal in the elite bracket in the Premier League.

Whether any club would be willing to splash out £100m on Luiz is another matter, with both Arsenal and City having spent extensively on their midfield in recent years.
