Rob Jones, Luke Wood offer bright glimpses of future on opposing sides

Pair of 22-year-olds dominate second day at Old Trafford while Keaton Jennings falls just shy of a century

Paul Edwards at Old Trafford15-May-2019
Nearly thirty years ago that fine writer Neville Scott collaborated with Geoff Cook on a book entitled . Subtitled “An Anatomy of Professional Cricket” it examined, among other things, the tests a player had to survive if he was to prosper in the county game. Despite the various revolutions and fandangos cricket has experienced since its publication Scott and Cook’s book retains its value. One has only to watch Rob Jones bat or Luke Wood bowl to be reminded of its wisdom and insight. Both Jones and Wood are finding their way in the game yet these 22-year-olds dominated much of this second day at Emirates Old Trafford. Jones’ 152-stand with Keaton Jennings had given Lancashire the opportunity to establish unassailable dominance until Wood, who had removed Joe Burns some five hours earlier, produced a couple of inswingers to account for Liam Livingstone, bowled for a third-ball duck, and Jones, who was leg before on the front foot for 67.But the wickets of Jones and Livingstone were no more than the filling in an unpalatable post-tea sandwich for Lancashire’s batsmen, four of whom fell to the second new ball. Their side’s collapse from 188 for 2 to 209 for 6 had begun Ben Sanderson produced a fine lifting delivery which brushed the shoulder of Jennings’ bat on the way to Ricardo Vasconcelos. Jennings had made 97 in over five hours and had shown typically firm resolve on a pitch which permits few liberties. Ten overs after his departure, Vasconcelos was called into action again when Steven Croft edged Jamie Overton wide to the keeper’s right. The flurry of wickets ceased when Tom Bailey joined Dane Vilas and this pair had shared an unbroken stand of 67 by the close. That gave Lancashire a first-innings lead of 46 with power to add on the third morning. But as spectators made their way home from Old Trafford this evening it would not be surprising if a few of them were reflecting on the technical excellence of Jones and Wood, two cricketers born three months apart who share a green and white dream. This is Jones’s 15th first-class match. He has been in and out of Lancashire’s team since making a brave century against Middlesex in only his third appearance in 2016. He won a regular place in the eleven about halfway through last summer but his place on the team-sheet is now secure. There is no case against selecting a player who makes a century and a 67 in successive games.Wood, who has a contract at Nottinghamshire, has played over twice as many top-level matches as Jones but has recently been loaned to both Worcestershire and Northamptonshire. His ability to swing the new ball testifies both to his ability and to the strength of seam bowling at Trent Bridge, whose coaches have given him the chance to play elsewhere. The ball which had Burns caught behind in the third over of the day was pushed across the Australian opener whereas that which bowled Livingstone curved in deliciously before plucking out the off pole.Jones also has the attributes of a formidable cricketer. His forward defensive is cricket’s equivalent of a government bond and his driving through the off side possesses the same technical accuracy as his less flashy strokes. Wood could have testified to the latter a few hours before he took his wicket. But this was a day on which batsmen had to wait for their opportunities against an accurate attack. Both Jennings and Jones did so during their 63-over stand and it was a particular shame that Jennings fell three runs short of his century. On the other hand, he would have been dismissed for five runs fewer had Sanderson accepted a simple chance at short fine leg off Rob Keogh just before tea.Jones still has much to learn. The coaches at Old Trafford will tell him as much and he will take it in. He was dropped on 47 when he failed to cover Overton’s bounce and Temba Bavuma grassed a two-handed slip chance many good club cricketers would describe as easy. Four overs later he reached his fifty off the same bowler with a scurried single which was immediately upgraded to a three by a couple of buzzers. And one wondered at tea whether Jones might make the most of his escape to score his second century in three championship innings.Wood put an end to such notions but the exploits of both these young players were a reminder there are times when we should set aside the easy allegiances of birth, upbringing or partiality. It is Maytime in England. Rob Jones and Luke Wood are attempting to cross the narrow line. The heart dances at the thought they might succeed.

Langer's biggest lesson: 'You don't mess with the Barmy Army'

Australia’s coach Justin Langer has counselled Steven Smith and David Warner to turn the other cheek to the Barmy Army’s inevitable barbs in England this summer, having reflected on how he made himself the focus of their tuneful banter as a player.During the 2002 Boxing Day Test, Langer made 250 and followed up by attacking the Barmy Army for baiting Brett Lee with shouts of “no-ball”, saying in part: “These people stand behind a fence drinking beer with most of them 50 kilos overweight making ridiculous comments,” Langer said at the time. “It’s easy for someone to say that from behind a fence, they’re within their rights because they’ve paid their money, but there’s still some integrity in life, I think.”From then on, Langer seldom had any peace from the English supporters’ group, something he recounted in Brisbane on Friday. “This is the biggest, probably, lesson of my sporting career,” he said. “I just got 250 so I walked in, I think I’m Viv Richards, I feel like I’ve got the gold chain and the chest out and like I’m the king … and I made one comment about the Barmy Army because I was sticking up for Brett Lee. Then they start singing the song about the seven dwarfs, so you don’t mess with the Barmy Army. I’m not messing with the Barmy Army.”One thing I respect about the Barmy Army, through thick and thin they always barrack for the England cricket team. We’re never going to be best friends but… I’ll never argue with the Barmy Army again. The songs are humiliating.”I think there’s going to be plenty of spotlight on the whole team. The boys are big boys now, they’ve worked through a real tough 12 months, they’ll be thicker skinned for it. There’s no real remedy for it, we know what we’re going to get, we’ll be ready for it. There will be some strategies, personal and collective strategies in place, so together we’re moving in the right direction and going on with what we love doing which is playing cricket and World Cup and Ashes cricket – it doesn’t get much better than that.”

Man Utd could repeat Vidic trick by signing "one of the most underrated CBs"

Erik ten Hag’s team is seventh in the Premier League after 17 matches, but their seven losses show that this season has been far from smooth sailing.

The only positive from this season for Manchester United is that they have only conceded 1.24 goals per game on average, and Andre Onana has the joint most clean sheets.

However, the fact that United have been forced to field 35-year-old Jonny Evans six times this season in the Premier League highlights the need for centre-back reinforcements.

Man Utd transfers latest – Jean-Clair Todibo

Fabrizio Romano took to X this week to state that Jean-Clair Todibo has been on Man United’s list of transfer targets since June.

Nice defenderJean-Clair Todibo.

According to Transfermarkt, the Nice defender has a value of £30m, but the French side are reportedly asking for at least £35m.

However, the 23-year-old has also been linked with Tottenham Hotspur, and the London club has recently opened talks with Todibo, but the deal is expected to be complex.

Jean-Claire Todibo’s style of play

United legend Nemanja Vidic joined the club halfway through the 2005/06 Premier League season for £7m and the Red Devils could repeat that trick by signing Todibo in January, who has the potential to transform the United backline just like the Serbian did during his eight-year spell at Old Trafford.

The ex-Barcelona defender has the perfect blend of on-the-ball ability, defensive security, and athleticism, which makes the centre-back a complete player who can fit in any system. Furthermore, according to Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, Todibo is “one of the most underrated CBs in Europe,” and based on the table below that shows his stats compared to centre-backs in the top European leagues, it is difficult to disagree.

Todibo would slot into the right centre-back position at United and instantly elevate the team's ability to progress the play through the defence. The signing of Onana in the summer indicated that Ten Hag wishes to use his keeper in buildup and when playing out from the back, however, some of the current crop isn't equipped for the philosophy.

As you can see by the stats, the France star is among the most elite defenders for his ball-playing skills. Luke Shaw is currently the only defender that can consistently and effectively progress the play in the backline, and Todibo could take on a similar role to what Jurien Timber did under Ten Hag at Ajax.

Jean-Clair Todibo

Lisandro Martinez is also set to return soon, and he would walk straight into the left centre-back role. Due to the Argentine’s lack of speed and ability to cover ground, Todibo would be the perfect partner for United’s number six, as he has the capacity to use his acceleration to recover quickly and stop dribblers in transition.

Overall, Todibo is the definition of a Ten Hag signing, and he would form a formidable partnership with Martinez. The duo would tick every box and allow the boss to play much closer to the style he impressed with at Ajax. At just £35m, the 23-year-old would be an absolute bargain and transform United.

Chelsea make contact over bargain transfer for Serie A star Paulo Dybala

Chelsea have reportedly made contact over a move to sign a new forward, however, Todd Boehly and co may need to act fast to seal a bargain transfer.

Chelsea target new striker

The Blues and manager Mauricio Pochettino are on the hunt for a new forward in 2024, despite bringing in Nicolas Jackson from Villarreal over the summer.

The Senegal international is currently away at the Africa Cup of Nations but has scored eight goals in 23 appearances in all competitions at Stamford Bridge.

There hasn’t been a shortage of attacking names linked with a move to London, with recent rumours claiming the club have held “positive” talks with the entourage of Napoli’s Victor Osimhen.

Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic is another who has been internally discussed at Stamford Bridge, whereas AS Roma’s Paulo Dybala is another rumoured target. Recent reports claimed that Chelsea were looking at tabling a formal offer for the World Cup winner over the coming days, and it seems as if a first move has now been made.

Paulo Dybala transfer update

Sport Witness relayed an update from Italy regarding the future of Dybala on Wednesday, claiming three Premier League clubs have now made contact with the forward’s agent.

Chelsea, Aston Villa and Newcastle are the three sides in question, with clubs in Saudi Arabia also keen on the Argentine. The report adds ‘that times are tense at AS Roma, because his €13m (£11.1m) release clause for foreign clubs will expire on January 15th’.

It looks as if Chelsea have until Monday to activate the release clause, and you could argue that just over £11m would be a steal for someone of Dybala’s quality.

Now 30 years of age, he can play as a second striker, centre-forward, winger or attacking midfielder, so would provide plenty of versatility for Pochettino in the final third. He’s also starred at the highest level, winning the World Cup with Argentina in 2022 while also winning the Serie A title on five occasions.

Dybala has also come in for praise throughout his career, including from Italian icon Francesco Totti, who said of him after joining Roma:

"I am happy that he joined Roma because he deserves it and because the city must have a player of his value. You can understand when players are special, he’s proving so with great performances. We are happy to have it at Roma, we are enjoying his performance."

A transfer could therefore be one to keep an eye on over the coming days following this latest update, with a move to England seemingly a real possibility with multiple clubs circling.

West Ham could sign a "special" £35m Said Benrahma upgrade

West Ham United enjoyed a fantastic 2023 that saw them lift European silverware for the first time, and as the Premier League takes a short winter break, they find themselves all the way up in sixth.

There have been plenty of stand-out performers for the Irons over the last 12 months, with long-term players and summer signings stepping up for the team when called upon.

That said, things can always be improved, and what better time to strengthen the team than when things are looking great?

West Ham United forwardSaid Benrahma.

This is clearly the attitude that David Moyes and the club are taking, as the latest player touted for a move to the London Stadium could bring with him bags of goals and be an upgrade on Saïd Benrahma: Ajax's Steven Bergwijn.

West Ham United transfer news – Steven Bergwijn

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Ajax winger Bergwijn is one of West Ham's "top targets" in the January window, and he will be allowed to leave the Dutch giants should a "good proposal" come in for him.

In good news for the Hammers, Dutch journalist Valentijn Driessen revealed last year that an offer of around €40m – about £35m – should be enough to convince Ajax to sell, and while that is still a lot of money, it is not out of reach.

Steven Bergwijn for Ajax against Brighton & Hove Albion.

The other interested parties might be the more significant obstacle to this deal being completed, though.

Romano has also claimed that other Premier League clubs are keen on the rapid winger, as are sides from the Saudi Pro League, who could offer wage packages too dear for the Eastenders to match.

However, if West Ham can get ahead of the competition, they could have their hands on a "top player", as dubbed by former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paul Robinson, for a not-so-unreasonable price.

How Steven Bergwijn compares to Saïd Benrahma

Now, if the Conference League champions can get this deal over the line, it would likely spell the end of Benrahma's career in Claret and Blue – especially as the club are reportedly open to selling the Algerian this month.

Alongside the former Brentford star, Lucas Paqueta has been frequenting the left side of the midfield, and for as good as the Ajax star has been over the last year, he isn't going to leapfrog the Brazilian right away.

However, if he can come in, replace Benrahma and make appearances across the frontline, that would still represent savvy business from the club.

Steven Bergwijn for Ajax

That said, how does the former Spurs player stack up to the man he could replace in East London?

Well, it's not pretty reading for Benrahma as the Netherlands international has him soundly beaten in almost every relevant statistic, bar progressive carries.

The "special" player, as former manager Antonio Conte once dubbed him, has a more impressive non-penalty expected goal and assist figure, takes more shots on target per 90, has a significantly better passing accuracy, and produces far more shot-creating and goal-creating actions per 90. It's promising stuff indeed.

At the end of the day, while Bergwijn might have struggled somewhat at Spurs, he has more than proven his ability back in the Netherlands, and if West Ham can get this deal over the line, then they could have a serious player on their hands.

'Very tough event for corruptors to come near' – ICC ACU chief

Alex Marshall says he has written to known unscrupulous elements on ACU’s radar and warned them they are “not invited” to the World Cup

An officer from the ICC’s anti-corruption unit (ACU) will, for the first time, travel alongside each of the 10 participating teams in the World Cup. The move is part of the ACU’s drive to stave off the ever-increasing, ever-present danger of corrupt elements who have been frequently implicated in various sport-fixing scandals. However, the ACU is confident that the World Cup is “well protected”.Alex Marshall, the ACU general manager, said that the advantage of having an officer from his unit travel with each team was to instill confidence among the players and support staff in reporting any approach from corruptors. “We have put an anti-corruption manager from my team with each of the squads, my people who work all around the world. Usually this is someone who has worked with the team anyway, goes on tour with them, knows all the players and support staff, and has a good relationship so they can report any concerns,” Marshall said at a media conference at the Oval on Friday.Marshall said the exercise proved to be fruitful when ACU officers travelled recently with a few international teams. “It’s something we’ve used at some of the T20 events around the world, and being away from the ground, it just allows anti-corruption managers to get to know the entire squad very well.”The person who’s with Bangladesh has been on tour with Bangladesh in recent months, knows all the players and all the squad. The person with Afghanistan has been on tour with Afghanistan, knows all the management, knows all the players. We’ve developed a much closer relationship with all the players and the squads, and having them (ACU officers) with them (the squad) throughout the whole of the World Cup just perpetuates that good relationship. The indicators that it’s working are the amount of reporting we’re getting from players.”Unlike his predecessors, Marshall has been more open and aggressive in his stance and words with regards to sending a message to unscrupulous elements. The ACU has identified that the corruptors, having found it hard to tread around players, have been trying to influence people on the “edge” which includes support staff, selectors, administrators, and groundsmen. Recently the ACU charged five people in Sri Lanka, including former captain Sanath Jayasuriya, as part its wide-ranging and longstanding investigations into alleged match-fixing activities. The others who were charged were Sanath Jayasundara, Dilhara Lokuhettige (twice), Nuwan Zoysa (twice), and Avishka Gunawardene.Marshall said the ACU had identified about a “dozen” corrupt elements globally, whose images were being shared with all 10 teams as well as the UK police. “This World Cup will be very, very well protected by anti-corruption (unit) working with police, National Crime Agency and gambling organisations. You can never guarantee any event will be free of an issue – what I can say is that the corruptors know how well protected this event is, they know how professionally it’s run and we have an anti-corruption manager with every single squad, not just at the matches, but away from the matches looking out for these people. And it’s around a dozen people who have had the ‘disinvite’ to the Cricket World Cup 2019 and who we will keep away.”If anymore pop up, we will be speaking to them as well. They are people who live all over the world, but the majority of the corruption we deal with has its origins in the sub-continent, unregulated betting markets.”In an interesting move, Marshall said the ACU had reached out to some of the corruptors – through solicitors and direct communication in some cases – alerting them they would be barred from the World Cup as soon as they were spotted. Some wrote back saying they would not come to the tournament. “I have either written, called or Whatsapped all the corruptors and the other main corruptors we know operating around the world to tell them not to come anywhere near the World Cup. So far they have all promised me they are not coming. But sometimes with corruptors, you find they don’t always tell the truth. So we will be very proactive in keeping on top of them, keeping them away from the tournament.”And that’s going to be enough to keep the corruptors away? “Who knows? I can’t actually prevent somebody getting on plane somewhere, but what I can do is keep communicating with the corruptors, tell them they are not invited to the World Cup, if they are seen here, at the ground, they will be thrown out. We have shared their details with the law enforcement and the police here in the UK – if our guys see them anywhere around the World Cup, they will be asked to leave.”Marshall was confident the various safeguards put in place would make it really difficult for the corruptors to disrupt the World Cup. “When they look at the World Cup they see a very well organised, professional, well governed, well protected event. This is a very tough event for corruptors to come near.”ICC ACU open to amnesty across all cricket?During the probe in Sri Lanka, the ACU also offered amnesty to encourage people to come forward with information. Marshall said the exercise had proved “pretty successful” with about 11 people coming forward. Asked whether the ACU planned to repeat the exercise in other countries, Marshall said he was open, but wanted to first wrap up the Sri Lanka investigation. “Not at the moment. We are still digging with what came from the amnesty – you will see we charged three people last weekend from Sri Lanka and there are more cases in the pipeline.”When we come to the end of that, we will then evaluate whether we repeat that elsewhere or in fact across the whole of cricket. It was pretty successful – 11 people came forward and we got quite a lot of new information.”

Farke eyeing late Leeds swoop for "monster" Rodon partner

While at one stage automatic promotion looked a long shot for Leeds United, the Yorkshire giants have impressively closed the gap on second-place Ipswich Town to just two points, following Wednesday night's win over Norwich City.

That narrow 1-0 victory – which saw Patrick Bamford continue his recent hot streak in front of goal – has ensured that the Whites are now on a five-game winning run in all competitions, having conceded just once since the turn of the year.

Maintaining that rampant momentum might require additional reinforcements before the close of the window, however, with recent reports indicating that the Elland Road outfit have set their sights on snapping up a Premier League defender this month.

Leeds want to sign Premier League titan

According to the Daily Mail, Leeds are one of the Championship clubs who are showing an interest in Liverpool centre-back, Nat Phillips, with the Englishman said to be up for grabs having returned from a loan spell at Celtic in the first half of the season.

The piece indicates that both Cardiff City and Blackburn Rovers are keen on the 26-year-old, although Farke and Co are also 'keeping an eye' on the one-time Stuttgart loanee, having previously been linked with a £10m permanent swoop for the player during the summer.

Nat Phillips

The in-demand titan didn't exactly enjoy the best of spells in Glasgow after making just eight appearances in all competitions under Brendan Rodgers, although his prior heroics would make him a welcome addition at Elland Road.

How Nat Phillips would fit in at Leeds

With Pascal Struijk currently sidelined and Liam Cooper – who could be in his final season at the club – also only just returning from injury, Farke has been forced to deploy midfield maestro Ethan Ampadu at the heart of the defence, alongside Joe Rodon.

8/10 Leeds star outshone Patrick Bamford vs Norwich

This Leeds United star even outshone goalscorer Patrick Bamford in the 1-0 win over Norwich City.

ByKelan Sarson Jan 25, 2024

While that switch has paid off of late, such has been the club's imperious form, moving Ampadu away from his usual midfield berth is unlikely to be a long-term solution and with young Charlie Cresswell also out of the picture, a regular partner for Rodon needs to be found.

That is where Phillips comes in, with the 6 foot 3 "monster" – as previously lauded by Reds boss Jurgen Klopp – able to provide a dominant defensive presence alongside the on-loan Welshman, with the latter man catching the eye to such an extent that a permanent deal is believed to be on the cards.

Although Phillips has seen his game time limited in recent years – making just 29 first-team appearances in total for his parent club – he did particularly impress during his prior stint in the second tier, having helped propel AFC Bournemouth to promotion during the 2021/22 campaign.

Hailed as a "throwback" of a defender by pundit Jamie Redknapp, the £65k-per-week brute was a standout figure during his six-month stint on the south coast, helping to keep eight clean sheets in just 17 Championship appearances, while impressively winning 65% of his total duels and 69% of his aerial duels.

To put that into context, Rodon, for instance, has helped Leeds to nine clean sheets from 26 league games in 2023/24, while winning 68% of his total duels and 68% of his aerial duels – a remarkably similar record to the Bolton native's time at the Vitality Stadium.

That then bodes well for the impact that Phillips can make alongside the former Swansea City man under Farke, with the Whites needing to overlook the centre-back's underwhelming recent spell in Glasgow.

Bid accepted: "Incredibly talented" Rangers player set to leave in January

An "incredibly talented" Rangers player is now on the verge of leaving the club in the January transfer window, with the Scottish giants accepting an offer in recent days.

Rangers transfer news

The Gers have been linked with so many players in recent weeks, as clubs all over the country look to potentially complete some late business, in what is their last chance to do so this season, as well as Philippe Clement's first opportunity to do so as Ibrox boss.

It looks as though a deal is in place to sign Fluminense left-back Jefte, according to renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano, with that position seemingly the main area that is being targeted. An agreement has reportedly been reached, so it looks as though the signing is all but done, as the club prepare for the possible departure of Ridvan Yilmaz.

Elsewhere, Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland has been seen as a transfer target for Rangers for an extended period, as he continues to enjoy an impressive season for his current club. The 28-year-old has scored four more goals than anyone in the Scottish Premiership in 2023/24 to date, finding the back of the net 14 times. Vitesse star Million Manhoef is also an exciting option who has been backed to seal a move to Ibrox, even being described as someone who could be Clement's version of Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah.

Yilmaz isn't the only one who could leave Rangers this month, however, and a big exit update has emerged regarding Jose Cifuentes.

Rangers accept bid for Jose Cifuentes

According to an update from Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph on X, Rangers have accepted a bid for midfielder Jose Cifuentes from Rizespor, as his time at the club nears its conclusion.

"Rangers have accepted an offer from Rizespor for midfielder Jose Cifuentes. The Turkish side made a loan bid, with an option to buy for around £2m."

Losing depth midway through the season is not ideal for Rangers, but equally, it does make sense for everyone concerned, given his squad status at Ibrox currently. The 24-year-old has been limited to only six starts in the Scottish Premiership this season, with a further three appearances coming from the substitutes' bench, so a loan move with an option to buy could be shrewd business for all parties.

Cifuentes is an undoubtedly gifted footballer, however, so Rangers losing him while he is still young isn't exactly great news, with his former Los Angeles coach Steve Cherundolo saying of him: "Cifu is an incredibly talented player. The sky is the limit for him. He is a complete player."

Assuming he does move on, the Ecuadorian will be remembered as a solid performer for the Gers, but one whose time at Ibrox was ultimately fleeting, with only 20 appearances made in total.

Fabrizio Romano says Rangers have “deal in place” to complete another signing

An agreement has been reached to sign the player in question.

ByHenry Jackson Jan 28, 2024

It would have been nice to see him stay for longer and fulfil his potential, but assuming he doesn't return in the summer and instead seals a permanent exit away from Ibrox, it will always be seen as a transfer that didn't completely work out.
