Wolves "In Talks" To Sign "Crazy" £7m Matheus Nunes Replacement

After months of stagnancy in the transfer window, Wolverhampton Wanderers are set for a dramatic end to deadline day, as another target has emerged.

The Old Gold have already announced both the £53m sale of Matheus Nunes to Manchester City and the capture of Tommy Doyle from the treble winners on loan, with reports pointing to more action to come.

Who could Wolves sign on deadline day?

As reported by Sky Sports News (relayed via Football Daily), Strasbourg midfielder Jean-Ricner Bellegarde has emerged as a target for the Midlands club to chase ahead of the 11pm deadline, with the two clubs locked "in talks over a potential deal."

Recent reports in France (via Get Football News France) claim that Strasbourg have turned down an €8m (£7m) bid from Wolves for the 25-year-old, who is said to have even agreed personal terms with the Premier League side.

With just hours remaining of the summer window, Gary O’Neil must act fast in the quest to secure the talented Frenchman, who was reportedly not in training for the club today.

Who is Jean-Ricner Bellegarde?

Deployed in a host of areas on the pitch, but primarily in central midfield, the 25-year-old machine could be the ideal capture for O’Neil this window, however, it’s clear as to why Strasbourg are reluctant to let him leave.

In the opening three Ligue 1 fixtures, the Wolves target has had a hand in four goals, scoring two and assisting two to assert his importance in his side’s midfield.

Named as one of the “crazy” talented midfielders that France have at their disposal by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Bellegarde could be the missing piece of the puzzle in O’Neil’s side.

Sales this summer have generated Wolves some critical funds, however have equally left the squad short in some areas due to the calibre of talent lost.

Bidding farewell to both Ruben Neves and Matheus Nunes leaves Molineux without two star creators, which is where the Strasbourg ace could come in and bolster the options in such an area.

While Wolves will undoubtedly miss the quality of Nunes, the Portuguese whiz is not irreplaceable, certainly not for the £57m gained for his transfer.

In fact, when revising the numbers accumulated by the former Sporting CP whiz in comparison to Bellegarde in their respective 2022/23 campaigns, the averages pose an interesting read.

As per FBref, the Frenchman averaged 5.69 progressive passes and 3.87 progressive carries in Ligue 1 last term, as well as averaging an impressive 2.12 key passes per 90 to account for his nine assists that year.

At Molineux, Nunes fell far short of the Wolves target last season, averaging 3.06 progressive passes, 2.15 progressive carries and 0.99 key passes per 90 for the Old Gold, via FBref, suggesting that the 25-year-old could in fact be a stronger fit.

Taking into consideration that the Portuguese ace was adapting to the Premier League, it was perhaps a wise moment for Wolves to sell him, considering that he had not yet hit true form at the club, as highlighted by his two goal contributions in 34 league appearances.

With an opening offer turned down, O’Neil will have to work to secure the signature of Bellegarde, in a signing that could prove to make those at Molineux forget all about the talent of Nunes.

Southampton: Saints make move to sign 28 y/o free agent

Southampton have reportedly made a first move to sign an in-demand free agent for manager Russell Martin.

Who did Southampton sign this summer?

The Saints have had a busy few months both on and off the pitch following relegation from the Premier League to the Championship last season.

Martin came in as the club’s new manager and wasted no time in adding to the squad. At the end of the window, Southampton brought in a total of eight new players.

Shea Charles and Ross Stewart commanded relatively big fees for a second-tier side from Manchester City and Sunderland, whereas Ryan Manning and Joe Lumley arrived on free transfers.

Meanwhile, four Premier League players – Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Mason Holgate, Flynn Downes and Ryan Fraser – signed on loan from Manchester City, Everton, West Ham United and Newcastle United.

There were also a number of departures, with Southampton bringing in over £150m in player sales. The likes of Romeo Lavia, Tino Livramento, James Ward-Prowse, Nathan Tella, Mohammed Salisu, Moussa Djenepo and Mislav Orsic all made permanent exits.

Martin was looking forward to the prospect of focusing on football and not the transfer window, though, saying:

"The best bit of the job is when you get to work with the players on the grass. The fewer disruptions you have, the bigger the focus is from the players.

"I think as a club we’ve navigated through this window of change so well. But we will still improve and the window shutting will definitely help with that."

However, despite the window slamming shut at the beginning of the month, it looks as if the Saints are still looking at possibly adding to their squad in the free-agent market.

According to TEAMtalk, midfielder Xeka is attracting plenty of interest in England, with Southampton and Championship rivals West Brom making enquiries to the player’s agent.

Alongside the second-tier sides, Xeka is also being looked at by Everton, Crystal Palace, Sheffield United and Wolverhampton Wanderers as well as clubs in France, Italy, Spain and Turkey.

Who is Xeka?

Xeka is 28 years of age and can play as a central, holding or left midfielder, so would provide a versatile option at St Mary’s.

The Portuguese midfielder is valued at €6m by Transfermarkt and is best known for his time in France with Lille. He made 144 appearances for the Ligue 1 side, contributing to 16 goals, and has also represented the likes of Stade Rennes, Braga, Dijon and SC Covilha throughout his career.

Xeka has been without a club since the middle of August, and as per FBref, the player has been compared to former Saints midfielder Oriol Romeu, now with FC Barcelona, over the past 365 days.

He has ranked in the top 4% for pass completion, top 6% for blocks and top 8% for passes blocked, so he could prove to be a shrewd pick up for whatever club manages to secure his services, and by the looks of things, Southampton are trying to do just that.

Alongside JWP: West Ham colossus stole the show in the Europa League

There were more than a few nervous Hammers in the London Stadium on Thursday night as Serbian side Backa Topola took the lead against West Ham United early in the second half, but an incisive flurry masterminded by James Ward-Prowse's creativity and Mohammed Kudus' dynamism clinched victory.

Last year's Europa Conference League champions, West Ham are seeking ascendency to the next level and now have their eye on Europa League glory. It's early days, true enough, but there is quality in abundance in this Irons squad and a foray into the latter stages is more than feasible.

Having won three and lost just one of their opening five Premier League fixtures, David Moyes' side dispatched TSC after a dreadful blunder from veteran defender Angelo Ogbonna, but ultimately, the home side's quality shone through, notably through James Ward-Prowse.

How did James Ward-Prowse play vs Backa Topola?

Having signed from relegated Southampton for around £30m in August, the creative midfielder looks to be one of the bargains of the summer, with his brace of assists on his West Ham European debut now taking his tally to seven goal contributions from five matches. Incredible.

Against the Serbian opposition, the 28-year-old produced a match-best rating of 8.4 – as per Sofascore – complementing his assists with seven key passes, a remarkable 94% passing accuracy.

Journalist Josh Bunting was among those waxing effusive over his seamless integration into the squad, saying: "He’s just fitted in so well, got to grips so quickly with the movement of his teammates, always has been a threat from set-pieces. More freedom in his role really helps."

Truly, an all-encompassing, quick-witted, sharp-shooting midfielder, and the promise he has in this burgeoning West Ham team is, frankly, frightening.

A slow start to the summer market threatened to derail the good work Moyes and co have plied over the past several years, but it all paid off with astute moves made to replace Declan Rice, and while Ward-Prowse is the undisputable success story, Konstantinos Mavropanos also proved his worth and then some in defence.

How did Konstantinos Mavropanos play vs Backa Topola?

The former Arsenal centre-half had been flourishing in the German Bundesliga before the Premier League came a-calling after an initial failure, with West Ham signing the Greek titan from Stuttgart for £19m.

Heralded as a "gladiator" by his erstwhile manager Pellegrino Matarazzo, the 25-year-old dazzled on his debut against Backa Topola, and after Ogbonna's disappointing night, will likely have done himself justice as Moyes allocates him to a wrung of the squad ladder.

Praised for his "impressive" performance by journalist Dan Woffenden, Mavropanos looked like he had plied his trade under Moyes' wing for years; commanding and courageous, he produced a pleasing, rounded display.

Indeed, Mavropanos won all three of his ground duels, only lost possession eight times despite taking a mammoth 108 touches and completing 86 passes, succeeded with both of his attempted dribbles, and made two clearances and interceptions apiece, achieving a commendable 7.7 match score.

Given that he ranks within the top 10% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, shot-creating actions, progressive carries, successful take-ons, interceptions and aerial wins per 90, as per FBref, he's evidently one of the most dynamic defenders in Europe, and his skill set will pay dividends for Moyes' side.

West Ham have their eye on the prize, and while the sunlight of the competition's dawn has scarcely bespeckled the campaign, with further imperious showings from the likes of Ward Prowse and Mavropanos – married with the trophy-winning credentials of the lion's share of the squad – well, there's a pretty good chance of emulating last season's great victory.

Rangers: Advocaat’s £1.3m signing would thrive if he played for Beale

Glasgow Rangers haven’t enjoyed the best of starts to the campaign, winning only 50% of their matches so far during 2023/24.

Defeats to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League qualifiers was then followed by a woeful 1-0 loss to Celtic during the first Old Firm tie of the Premiership season, and it surely gives Brendan Rodgers' side an advantage in the title race already.

There have been few things to get excited about for the supporters, yet one player who seems to be rejuvenated this term is Rabbi Matondo.

How has Rabbi Matondo performed this season?

The Welsh winger failed to hit the ground running last term, managing to register just five assists across 28 matches, and it appeared that his Gers career was over before it really began.

Instead of seeking a move away from Ibrox, he knuckled down and worked hard during pre-season and has so far gotten his reward.

Seven appearances so far this season have yielded two goals and an assist, with his strike against PSV his first for the club.

Rangers forward Rabbi Matondo.

It has represented a massive turnaround for the player who looked out of the picture towards the end of 2022/23.

With Ryan Kent and Fashion Sakala leaving Glasgow during the summer transfer window, Matondo has a chance to cement a regular spot on the left side of the attack, or even alongside another forward depending on which system Michael Beale deploys.

However, what the manager would give for a former Light Blues gem who would most certainly be a key player under the current regime; Peter Lovenkrands.

How much did Peter Lovenkrands cost Rangers?

Under Dick Advocaat, the Gers had resumed their dominance of Scottish football, winning back-to-back titles in 1998/99 and 1999/00. In fact, the club had won five out of six domestic trophies on offer for the Dutchman, and it appeared they weren’t going anywhere.

Advocaat made a few more signings during the summer of 2000, luring players such as Fernando Ricksen, Kenny Miller, and Bert Konterman, while Tore Andre Flo joined in November from Chelsea.

Peter Lovenkrands for Rangers

It was the signing of Lovenkrands however, who would outlast every single one of Advocaat’s signings and turn into a key player for the Glasgow side over the coming years.

The Dane cost just £1.3m from Akademisk Boldklub, which in relation to the fees they were shelling out for other players, £12m on Flo for example, it represented a wonderful bargain on a youngster who would only get better.

How good was Peter Lovenkrands?

It took time for the player to settle in at Ibrox, making just nine appearances in his debut season, failing to score or grab an assist, but he stuck in and soon became a major part of the Alex McLeish rein, as the former Aberdeen defender took over from Advocaat in December 2001.

Featuring either on the left wing or as a centre-forward, as the aforementioned Matondo can, Lovenkrands’ pace was his main weapon, while he also began to show a keen eye for goal and this quality soon paid off during the 2002 Scottish Cup final.

Not only did the Denmark international net the equaliser, but in the dying embers of a captivating match, he popped up to head a winner past Rab Douglas in the Celtic goal to secure a famous win.

It ensured the balance of power was swinging back in favour of Rangers following a tough 18 months, playing second fiddle to a resurgent Celtic side under Martin O’Neil and his goal was the catalyst for change.

The 2002/03 season saw him score nine league goals while also netting against Celtic in the League Cup final and these goals against their Old Firm rivals were beginning to become a regular habit.

Indeed, during his six seasons at Ibrox, Lovenkrands was lethal against their Old Firm rivals, not only scoring twice against them in cup finals, but also grabbing two goals against the Hoops in the league.

Totally hypothetical, of course, but Matondo would be largely forgotten if Beale was able to rely on a peak Lovenkrands to strike fear into opponents via his wonderful abilities on the wing. He would certainly chip in with key goals throughout the campaign, absolutely no doubt about it.

What happened to Peter Lovenkrands?

He enriched himself further into Ibrox folklore by scoring the equaliser against Inter Milan during the final matchday of the 2005/06 Champions League campaign which saw the Gers become the first Scottish side to make the knockout rounds.

In total, he scored 18 goals and registered nine assists that term, which attracted the attention of other clubs, and he joined Schalke on a pre-contract deal, ending his six-year stint in Scotland.

It didn’t quite work out for him in Germany and a move to Newcastle United in 2009 saw Lovenkrands back on British soil.

Former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer was full of praise for the forward when he arrived at the club, saying: “I know he made a big impression when he first came here, and I thought he started well against Chelsea before he had the injury.

“He can play in a few positions, and has scored a couple of important goals. If we need him, hopefully he can do the same again.”

High praise indeed from one of the finest strikers to emerge from England, and it proved that the Dane could shine out of Scotland.

The former Gers star is still fondly remembered by supporters of a certain vintage and there have been times in the last few years when a prime Lovekrands is dearly needed, particularly now.

Unfortunately, Beale doesn’t have the luxury of being able to call upon him to slot into his system, but if he did, the Gers may well have defeated Celtic a few weeks ago.

Having won two titles and a handful of domestic cups, Lovenkrands knows what it takes to succeed at the Light Blues and his wisdom would surely be greatly received by those who are currently trying to claim a first title since 2021 this season.

Nottingham Forest could sign a ‘monster’ to partner Sangare

An update has emerged on Nottingham Forest and their attempts to bolster their midfield options before the summer transfer window slams shut tonight.

What's the latest Nottingham Forest transfer news?

According to Spanish outlet Sevilla ABC, the Tricky Trees are 'pressing' ahead with a late swoop to sign Real Betis central midfielder Guido Rodriguez.

The report claims that the club have already had one offer of €7.5m (£6m) turned down for the Argentina international and are now prepared to raise their offer to secure his services.

It states that these next few hours are important after talks between Betis and the experienced ace, as it now remains to be seen whether or not he will move on before the deadline passes.

How good is Guido Rodriguez?

The 29-year-old has proven himself to be an excellent combative midfielder in LaLiga over the last few years and could form an outstanding partnership with Ibrahima Sangare in the middle of the park.

Forest have reportedly agreed a £30m deal to sign the Ivory Coast international from Dutch giants PSV and he could be a dominant force alongside Rodriguez for Steve Cooper's side.

In the Eredivisie last season, the 25-year-old giant caught the eye with an average Sofascore rating of 7.24 across 29 appearances as he scored five goals and made 3.1 tackles and interceptions per game for his side.

Rodriguez, meanwhile, averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.07 across 34 LaLiga outings for Betis as he showcased his ability to break up play to win possession back for his side on a regular basis.

Real Betis midfielder Guido Rodriguez.

The £28k-per-week ace made a phenomenal 4.6 tackles and interceptions per match for his team and displayed his physical strength with a duel success rate of 60%, which shows that he came out on top in the majority of his physical contests.

He also averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.05 over 32 Spanish top-flight outings during the 2021/22 campaign and made an impressive four tackles and interceptions per appearance. This shows that the Argentine brute has been able to deliver a high standard of defensive performances over a prolonged period of time.

Comparatively, no Forest central midfielder managed more than Remo Freuler's 2.5 tackles and interceptions per game in the Premier League last season.

No player in any position averaged a Sofascore rating higher than 6.99 for Cooper's side as they avoided relegation back to the Championship, which illustrates how impressive the two potential deadline day recruit's performances for their respective clubs were last term.

Indeed, Rodriguez, who was once described as a “defensive monster” by analyst Marcus Bring, has the potential to be an outstanding addition to the squad due to his knack for winning the ball back more frequently than any of the manager's current options have the capability of doing.

Therefore, the current Betis star could form a monstrous partnership with Sangare as they are both able to be destroyers in midfield with their physical strength and their quality out of possession to be rocks in front of the defence.

Olivier, Morris added to South Africa Test squad

There is no room yet, however, for Dale Steyn, who has yet to play a competitive match since injuring his heel in January

Firdose Moonda18-Mar-2018Fast bowler Duanne Olivier and allrounder Chris Morris have been added to South Africa’s squad for the last two Tests against Australia but there was no room for Dale Steyn, who has yet to play a competitive match since injuring his heel in January. With Kagiso Rabada’s participation in the rest of the series hinging on whether he succeeds in his appeal against a Level 2 sanction on Monday, the selectors opted to boost the bowling resources in the squad.”Circumstances have forced us to name a large squad at this stage so that we can cover all possible options,” Linda Zondi, the convener of selectors, said. “We have retained the 15 players who produced an excellent performance to level the Test series in Port Elizabeth. Olivier was the pick of our bowlers for South Africa A in their tour match against Australia while Morris has been in excellent form in domestic cricket, taking four wickets in an innings and making more than 150 runs, including a century, for the Titans in the Sunfoil Series against the log-leading Warriors.”Neither Olivier nor Morris were named in the original squad. Olivier last played Test cricket against Bangladesh at the start of the summer, while Morris hasn’t played a Test match since July 2017 in England. Morris was part of the group that was named to play India, but did not play a Test match and coach Ottis Gibson said he felt Morris had “work to do” after the limited-overs matches. However, with South Africa needing players immediately, they don’t have time for that work to be done.It is also not guaranteed that either Olivier or Morris will play a Test, even if Rabada remains suspended. Morne Morkel, who did not play in Port Elizabeth, is likely to replace Rabada with Vernon Philander and Lungi Ngidi making up the rest of the pace attack.

Talks underway: Chelsea have "already" made offer for "interesting" player

Chelsea have reportedly "already" made an offer for an "interesting new young player" as Todd Boehly and co get busy ahead of January.

Who have Chelsea signed 2023?

Mauricio Pochettino's side spent £397 million on the summer signings of Christopher Nkunku, Axel Disasi, Nicolas Jackson, Lesley Ugochukwu, Robert Sanchez, Romeo Lavia, Moises Caicedo, Cole Palmer, Djordje Petrovic, Angelo and Deivid Washington before deadline day.

Going the other way, Kalidou Koulibaly, N'Golo Kante, Edouard Mendy, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Christian Pulisic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Cesar Azpilicueta, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ethan Ampadu and Callum Hudson-Odoi all left either on loan or permanently for £230 million in total.

It was a busy, busy few months for Boehly and his co-sporting directors – Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart – as the west Londoners look to get back fighting at the very highest level.

Pochettino hasn't exactly enjoyed a dream start to his Chelsea tenure overall; losing two, drawing two and winning just one of his opening five Premier League games – despite the injection of quality.

The sole victory came against Luton Town while Chelsea couldn't get past both Liverpool and Bournemouth. Their losses came in shock defeats to West Ham and Nottingham Forest. However, despite torrid run of form, Pochettino is optimistic his side will turn a corner ahead of their bout against Aston Villa on Sunday.

"I think the fans know if you invest the type of money, there is expectation," said Pochettino. "What I can tell the fans is the circumstance, I cannot change the reality. With all of the squad fit we can compete, we don't have all of the squad available, what can we do?

"For me, nothing to say, the fans can do this. Twelve injured today, three of four youngs guys, two keepers on the bench, I am going to cry, I am going to complain, to who? I have to accept this. That is the circumstance and we need to accept. We have our opinion, our reality. I think we are doing good things, more than people can expect but I told you before the season, Chelsea is about the win. Young players need to feel what it means to be a Chelsea player."

What's the latest Chelsea transfer news?

Boehly, according to recent reports, is said to be chasing a new goalscorer with links to both Victor Osimhen and Ivan Toney. Meanwhile, Chelsea are also continuing the hunt for exciting new talent, as reporter Rudy Galetti shares news for Tribal Football. As per the journalist, writing in his column, talks are "underway" to sign a "new interesting young player" in Corinthians defensive midfielder Gabriel Moscardo.

Chelsea are said to have "already" made a "first verbal proposal" for the Brazilian, and while there hasn't quite been an agreement, they're working to lower the price and find a deal. Corinthians are believed to value Moscardo at around £26 million with Boehly's offer coming in at around £17m.

The negotiations are not said to be advanced at this point, but Moscardo is a man in demand. Indeed, other clubs in Italy, Spain and England want to sign him as well with Chelsea attempting to get ahead of the competition.

Wolves: Journo names one player that could "reignite" the club

Wolverhampton Wanderers completed the signing of Manchester City midfielder Tommy Doyle this past transfer deadline day, on a season-long loan with an option to buy for a fee of around £4.3m.

Cityzens boss Pep Guardiola once described Doyle as a “special” player, after he stood out for the Sky Blues in an FA Cup win in February 2021.

The 21-year-old gem comes into a struggling Wolves side who have just three points from the opening four games, leaving them in 15th place heading into the international break.

Doyle is one of eight new arrivals over the summer at Molineux, and fans will be hoping he can fill the void of recent departure Matheus Nunes, who went in the opposite direction joining Manchester City in a £53m move.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, respected journalist and transfer insider Dean Jones has offered an exciting insight into what Wanderers fans can expect from their new man.

What did Dean Jones say about Tommy Doyle?

Jones has stated that Doyle’s potential influence on this Wolves side should not be underestimated.

When asked whether Gary O’Neil should introduce Doyle immediately into the Wolves side after the international break, he replied:

“I think so because Wolves are obviously now producing the results that people feared might be coming their way at the start of the season.”

He continued on Wolves’ start to the season:

“They started okay when they went to Manchester United and put in that performance, so it looked like they might be okay and there had been a few flashes under O'Neil that suggests they could get out of this.

"But they need the new signings to come into the team now and start getting settled. I think Doyle is one I'm particularly excited to see start to show what he is capable of.

"The early joy that Wolves felt from the start of the season is now gone, but somebody like Doyle undoubtedly has the potential to reignite something in that Wolves team."

Where does Doyle fit in at Wolves?

The 21-year-old whiz impressed in the Championship last season on loan at Sheffield United, as they gained promotion back to the Premier League. He played 33 times in all competitions, scoring four goals and assisting seven for his teammates.

Former Sheffield United loanee Tommy Doyle.

For Wolves, Doyle can expect to be one of two more central midfielders, which since the absence of Nunes has included the young Joao Gomes, alongside the more experienced Gabonese midfielder, Mario Lemina.

Upon arrival, sporting director Matt Hobbs waxed lyrical about the City academy gem, stating that he "ticks a lot of boxes" and is "something different" in the engine room, via the club's official website.

It is likely he will be part of Wolves’ squad when the West Midlands side return to action on the 16th of September, where they host in-form title hopefuls Liverpool at Molineux.

O’Neil has already expressed his delight with his new signing stating the addition of his quality will really “affect games at this level,” hinting at Doyle’s readiness to feature in a game of high magnitude.
