Aston Villa Could Sign £52k-p/w ‘Animal’ This Summer

Aston Villa are turning their attention to the summer transfer window as the 2022/23 campaign comes to a close.

Unai Emery has taken the Villans to new heights, with one game remaining of the Spaniard’s first season that could take the Midlands club to Europe.

Not many could have predicted the success that Villa would lead this term, following the dismissal of Steven Gerrard in October, when the club were loitering towards the bottom three.

The 51-year-old Premier League manager of the year nominee, is targeting more highs in his first full season and is reportedly looking towards an active summer in the transfer window.

Reports have linked a number of La Liga names to Villa Park in the coming window, with news reported over the weekend of the potential progression regarding a Real Madrid star.

What’s the latest on Dani Ceballos to Aston Villa?

As reported by one Foot Mercato journalist, Villa are speculated to have made a “very important” offer to Spanish midfielder Dani Ceballos.

The 26-year-old is out of contract in Madrid this summer, sparking rumours of his potential exit ahead of Emery’s interest.

The two were first linked in January when it was reported by Marca that the midfielder rejected a potential move.

What could Dani Ceballos bring to Aston Villa?

Ceballos has had a spell in the Premier League previously, as well as working under Emery while on loan at Arsenal.

Described by the Villa boss as a player that can do “great things”, the midfielder could have a real impact on his current side, with FBref likening him based on statistics to Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez.

The Utrera-born play-maker ranks in the top 1% of progressive passes in Europe’s top five leagues in his position, with a monstrous 11.73 per 90. He also ranks highly in terms of take-ons (best 2%), averaging a successful 2.36 per 90 – as per FBref.

Lauded by former boss Mikel Arteta when speaking to BBC as being an "animal" in training, the £52k-per-week ace could be a powerful weapon in Emery's plans.

Soccer Football – Europa League – Group F – Arsenal v Standard Liege – Emirates Stadium, London, Britain – October 3, 2019 Arsenal’s Dani Ceballos celebrates scoring their fourth goal REUTERS/David Klein

While his position is comparative to Villa’s Emi Buendia, his numbers over the past year dominate the Argentine as per FBref, with the former Norwich City ace recording just 2.18 progressive passes per 90 and only 0.98 successful take-ons per 90.

The potential arrival of the Madrid man could spark competition with the midfielder in Emery’s system, adding to depth and player performance.

Villa are on the path to great success with the four-time Europa League winner’s guidance, however, the summer window will be crucial as every team in the top tier will look to strengthen.

The club have strong targets for the 2023/24 campaign, and should they seal European football on the final day, Villa Park could become a very tempting location for hot talents to progress their game.

Lumb, Christian blitz brings Notts new record

Dynamic batting from Michael Lumb and Dan Christian powered Notts Outlaws to an eight victory over Leicestershire Foxes, under the Duckworth Lewis method – also helped establish a new county record. The Outlaws romped to their eighth straight win, the first time they have done that in the NatWest T20 Blast, with Lumb scoring an unbeaten 69 from 26 balls and Christian clubbed his way to 54 not out from just 16.After both innings of the match had been interrupted by bad weather, Notts were left to score 141 from 14 overs. Thanks to Lumb’s start – which saw him reach his 50 in only 17 deliveries – and then Christian’s brutality which saw him get to his half century from a ball fewer, the home side raced to 146 for 2 in only 10.3 overs.Put in, after Christian had won his eighth straight toss, Leicestershire Foxes made 170 for four, after an interruption had initially reduced the contest to 18 overs.Mark Cosgrove made 53 from 34 balls for the visitors, having hit six fours and a six and Farhaan Behardien made an undefeated 48 from 26 balls. After sharing in an opening stand of 50 with Cosgrove, captain Mark Pettini perished in the seventh over, lifting Patel into the hands of Christian at short extra cover.Imran Tahir’s leg spin was held back until the eleventh over and he made up for lost time by immediately ending Cosgrove’s stay with a googly, which had the batsman groping forward and unable to get back and beat the Read stumping.Cameron Delport presented the ‘keeper with another scalp in the next over, hoisting Steven Mullaney high into the skate grey skies.Behardien hit the same bowler high over the midwicket ropes and appeared set to mount an assault in the closing overs but deteriorating conditions soon forced the players back to the pavilion with 115 for three on the board.Despite a lengthy delay the umpires found time for the Foxes to have three more overs, which produced 55 runs.Lewis Hill hit 30 before hitting Luke Fletcher out to Jake Ball on the leg side fence, one delivery after the same fielder had spilled a diving effort in the same vicinity.Behardien monopolised the strike from then on, clubbing 25 from the final over, bowled by Ball.Notts began their romp to the finishing line with an explosive start from Lumb and Riki Wessels. They blazed their way to 60 from just 4.3 overs,at which point Clint McKay bowled Wessels, heaving across the line, for 19.Lumb had given the innings a real impetus by hitting three sixes in a Richard Jones over, which went for 26 runs. Neil Dexter’s introduction into the attack cost a further 16 as Lumb moved to his 50 from 17 balls, with seven fours and three sixes.Rob Sayer sent back Greg Smith, lbw for 4 but his next ball was smashed back over his head for another maximum as Christian stylishly announced his arrival in the middle. The Australian then went on a super-charged offensive. He hit Sayer for three sixes in a row before his sixth maximum, off Clint McKay, sealed the victory for his side.Whilst the defeat leaves the Foxes at the foot of the table, Notts Outlaws can now look forward to a home quarter final against Essex, the fourth placed team in the South Group.

Lyth hundred serves timely reminder of qualities

England’s erstwhile Test opener Adam Lyth hit an unbeaten century as Yorkshire edged toward parity going into the final day of their rain-ruined Specsavers County Championship clash with Surrey

ScorecardAdam Lyth’s century anchored Yorkshire’s reply•Getty ImagesEngland’s erstwhile Test opener Adam Lyth hit an unbeaten century as Yorkshire edged toward parity going into the final day of their rain-ruined Specsavers County Championship clash with Surrey. The 28-year-old left-hander from Whitby defied Surrey’s attack and a gloomy afternoon in south-east London to reach 116 not out for his part in a third-wicket stand with Andrew Gale (61) that added 150 and helped cut the first innings deficit to 60.With Yorkshire on 207 for 3, a positive fourth-day result appears unlikely on a pitch at The Kia Oval that has grown flatter by the hour, but Lyth must have been quietly pleased with his timely display on the eve of the first Investec Test against Pakistan.Responding by the mid-session to Surrey’s 267 all out, the championship title-holders initially stumbled to 47 for 2 within 13 overs. They lost Alex Lees (15) in the eighth over who, having plundered a brace of boundaries off Sam Curran, was undone by one that trimmed off stump to make it 28 for 1.Jack Leaning soon followed without scoring when he went back to cut Stuart Meaker’s first-ball loosener, only to chop a short delivery onto the base of his off stump.Yorkshire re-grouped nicely through Lyth and Gale, the former moving sweetly to a 70-ball 50 after rocking back to punch through the covers for four against the bowling of Gareth Batty.Batty suffered again after tea when Lyth, who won the last of his seven England caps against Australia here almost a year ago, pulled a long-hop into the lower echelons of the OCS Stand for the first six of the match, then, after a short break for bad light, he danced down the pitch to deposit one from Zafar Ansari into the Pavilion seats for another maximum. He reached his 19th first-class century with a pulled boundary to fine leg off a Meaker bouncer. He reached three figures off 159 balls and hit 11 fours and a brace of sixes. At the other end, Gale was content to play second fiddle, posting a 131-ball fifty – his first of the campaign – that, whilst ensuring his side could not lose this match, also maintained their slim chances of pushing for a last-day victory. The Yorkshire captain fell five overs from the scheduled close when feathering one from Tom Curran into the gloves of Ben Foakes for a season’s best 61, leaving Lyth to go into the final day with power to add.At the start of the third day, Yorkshire needed a shade over two hours to mop up Surrey’s five remaining first innings wickets. With the hosts nine wickets down at 1pm, umpires Martin Saggers and Neil Bainton had just sanctioned an additional 30 minutes when, three deliveries later, Meaker (4) nibbled to first slip to end the innings at 267 and leave top-scorer Sam Curran undefeated on 59.Surrey had made a poor start when, without addition to their overnight score and to only the fourth delivery of the day, Foakes steered one from Steven Patterson to second slip where Lyth pocketed the catch to make it 164 for 6.Steve Davies raised a 69-ball half-century as he and Sam Curran added 75 in tandem but, with his score on 56, the former England keeper went lbw to one from Tim Bresnan that appeared to cut back in to the left-hander.Curran posted his 50 from 82 balls but, moments later his brother Tom fell lbw after rocking back when aiming to leg against Adil Rashid.Four balls later Batty fell in similar fashion without troubling the scorers enabling Yorkshire to bank their third bowling bonus point.

All six territorial boards of the West Indies Cricket Board will find representation for the first time in the upcoming Regional Women’s Tournament, comprising the limited-overs format, starting Thursday. Leewards Islands will field a team for the first time in the tournament, while Windward Islands will play as a single unit, also for the first time.Windwards earlier had each of its four nations – Dominica, St Lucia, St Vincent and Grenada – playing as individual teams when the regional tournament was an eight-team competition. That changed in 2015 when Windwards fielded only two outfits – North and South.”We want to welcome Leewards Women into the fold and are looking forward to them playing a valuable role in the expansion of the women’s game in the region,” Josina Luke, WICB project officer for women’s cricket, said. “We have spent the last year working with the Leewards in the development of this squad, following a decision by our directors to have them involved this year, so this is another step towards strengthening the base of the women’s game in the region and expanding our talent pool.”The banding together of the talents of the Windwards Women helps us to streamline our tournaments and bring greater competitiveness to the overall women’s game, as the ultimate aim is to create a stronger West Indies Women’s team with a view to winning more global titles.”Leewards will be captained by Shawnisha Hector, the Antiguan pacer, while Afy Fletcher, the West Indies Women’s legspinner, will lead Windwards. The tournament, this year, will comprise the Super50 as well as Twenty20 competitions. “We want to broaden the pool of players for the West Indies Women’s team, bearing in mind two important things,” Luke said. “First, we are well-placed for automatic qualification for the ICC Women’s World Cup next year in England and want to remain on that trajectory with important series in the ICC Women’s Championship later this year against England at home and India on the road. Also, we want to fortify our squad in the T20 format, so we can continue to put forward the kind of performances that enhance our position as World champions.”The tournament will begin with the Super50 competition. Barbados, the defending champions, will face Trinidad & Tobago. Leewards will take on five-time champions Jamaica, while hosts Guyana kickstart their campaign against Windwards. Each of the teams will meet the others once in the round-robin stage, which will consist of five matches of 50-overs-a-side. The teams with the maximum points will clash in the final, on July 17.The T20 tournament will take place four days later with three games on each match day, all of them at the Guyana National Stadium, before a final round of play-off matches to determine positions on July 25.SquadsBarbados: Shaquana Quintyne (captain), Aaliyah Alleyne, Shamilia Connell, Deandra Dottin, Keila Elliott, Allison Gordon, Reshelle Griffith, Malissa Howard, Kycia Knight, Hayley Matthews, Shakera Selman, Charlene Taitt, , Shanna Thompson, Tiffany ThorpeGuyana Tremayne Smartt (captain), Shemaine Campbelle, Shabika Gajnabi, Erva Giddings, Melanie Henry, Mandy Mangru, Plaffiana Millington, Subrina Munroe, Kaysia Shultz, Heema Singh, Latoya Smith, Akaze Thompson, Lashuna Toussaint, Kavita YadramJamaica Stafanie Taylor (captain), Alecia Bookal, Shanel Daley, Keneshia Ferron, Chinelle Henry, Corrine, Howell, Natasha McLean, Jodian Morgan, Chedean Nation, Roshana Outar, Tameka Sanford, Jerona Walcott, Vanessa Watts, Rashada WilliamsLeeward Islands Shawnisha Hector (captain), Jasmine Clarke, Melicia Clarke, Davanna Claxton, Kimberly Dookhan, Amanda Edwards, Sherma Jackson, Rozel Liburd, Terez Parker, Grace Persaud, Kerisha Powell, Jenisen Richards, Eldora Sylvester, Saneldo WillettTrinidad & Tobago Merissa Aguilleira (captain), Kirbyina Alexander, Reniece Boyce, Britney Cooper, Rosalie Dolabaille, Stacy Ann King, Lee Ann Kirby, Shenelle Lord, Anisa Mohammed, Selene O’Neil, Kamara Ragoobar, Karishma Ramharack, Amanda Samaroo, Rachael VincentWindward Islands Afy Fletcher (captain), Stacy Ann Adams, Holly Charles, Roylyn Cooper, Nerissa Crafton, Krisani Irish, Qiana Joseph, Juliana Nero, Akeira Peters, Rosilia Registe, Yasmine St. Ange, Glendeen Turtin, Rackel Williams, Swayline Williams

"Terrific" £91k-p/w Tottenham Ace Could Leave This Summer

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks "wants to return" from his loan spell with Sampdoria and prove himself to the new manager, but he could be shown the exit door, according to journalist Paul Brown.

How has Harry Winks performed for Sampdoria?

Winks has managed to hold down a consistent place in the Sampdoria starting XI when he has been fit, making 18 appearances in the Serie A, gaining some much-needed game time after sparsely appearing for Tottenham in the previous campaign.

The Englishman has managed to prove himself against some of the better sides in the Italian top flight, with journalist Matt Barlow hailing him for a "terrific" performance against Inter Milan team back in February.

In his last three matches, the 27-year-old has averaged a Sofascore match rating of 7.0 or higher, having really started to find his form, displaying his defensive aptitude by winning six ground duels against Udinese, the joint-highest amount of any player.

Having finally put his injury problems to bed, Brown believes the Spurs academy graduate would be eager to come back to north London, although he indicates it will not be easy for him to break into the team.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: :“Winks is in flux. He has not been able to convince a series of managers now that he deserves a starting place.

“I'm 100% sure he wants to return and try to prove that to whoever comes in.

“But he's facing an uphill battle and has a lot of people in front of him at the moment who the club have invested more money in.

“So, it could be that we're seeing the end of Harry Winks at Spurs.”

Should Tottenham sell Winks?

Although the central midfielder has shown some promising signs out on loan, there are no real indications he would be able to fight for a starting spot at Tottenham, given that he does not offer a great deal in either an attacking or defensive sense.

The £91k-per-week maestro has registered zero non-penalty goals in the past year, while he also ranks in just the 14th percentile for tackles, and in the third percentile for blocks in the same time period.

In truth, Winks is unlikely to push either Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg for a starting berth next season, given that the fellow defensive midfielder scores higher on the vast majority of key metrics, including interceptions, tackles and assists per 90.

As such, Tottenham should look to sell their youth product this summer, and Sampdoria could be interested, given that he has fared pretty well on loan there this season.

Chelsea In Talks Over Blockbuster Transfer For £955k-p/w Star

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is in talks with Paris Saint-Germain chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi over a potential move for Neymar, French football expert Julien Laurens has claimed.

What's going on with Neymar?

The Brazil superstar is set to leave PSG this summer, having been targeted by the club's fans, who called for him to depart the French capital.

In what has been an injury-hit campaign, he has 18 goals and 17 assists in 29 games, and the 31-year-old would be a statement signing for anyone.

Speaking on ESPN FC (5.30), Laurens claimed that Chelsea are in talks over a potential deal for the attacker, even though they will not be playing European football next season.

"We know that Todd Boehly has had meetings already with the Al-Khelaifi to talk about Neymar, talking about the possibility of bringing him to Stamford Bridge next season," he stated.

"I don't think this is a strategy from Newcastle to go and get someone like Neymar, their strategies in recruitment have been very different despite the money that they have.

"For Chelsea. however, the bling-bling has been the strategy, that's what they want. So I think Neymar on that point would fit well."

Could Neymar solve Chelsea's problems?

Although he is still prolific in front of goal, Neymar, who has been described as a "special talent," may not solve Chelsea's issues in attack.

Chelsea have already invested a large sum of money in left-winger Mykhailo Mudryk, and Neymar's arrival could block the Ukrainian's pathway to the team.

The Blues have struggled all season, scoring just 34 times in 34 matches, and as he is not an out-and-out striker, Neymar may not be the striker Chelsea need to lead the line.

If Chelsea keep loanee Joao Felix, then they will have two expensive, younger players in Neymar's favoured positions, and signing the Brazilian on a big-money deal would not solve their other issues.

On a wage of around £955k-per-week, he would cost the club a huge amount of money during a time when they need to cut costs, with an inflated squad that needs trimming as well as a lack of Champions League revenue.

At 31, Neymar would be a short-term signing, and whilst his arrival would be a huge statement, his poor injury record would likely mean Chelsea get little value for money, and given that other areas of the team need investment, it is a signing that they should avoid.

Praise For £60k-p/w Declan Rice After Fan Interaction

Fans online have been left singing the praises of West Ham United captain Declan Rice after he showed his class when interacting with a young fan.

Why is Declan Rice getting plaudits?

It was a great outing for the England international on Sunday evening as he led his team to a Premier League win over rivals Manchester United.

In the end, it was a howler from goalkeeper David De Gea that allowed Said Benrahma to score the only goal of the game as the Hammers picked up a 1-0 victory.

The three points mean that West Ham are almost certainly set to avoid relegation at the end of the season and Rice played his part in the victory.

He was named the “star man” by Jonty Coleman in his football.london player ratings for his 8/10 display. The journalist wrote: “For however much West Ham get for Rice when he eventually leaves, he will be worth every penny, and probably many, many more.

“Showed he was the Premier League’s highest interception winner by winning several against a Man United side chasing Champions League football.

“Created chances with his quick feet and clever running and mopped up all sorts in the middle of the pitch. Probably deserved an assist for his second-half crosses, an outstanding display.”

What’s more, as per Squawka, Rice is the only player in Europe’s top five leagues with 30+ interceptions, 51 clearances, take-ons completed, aerial duels won, chances created, and shots this season while he’s also won possession more times than any other player (322).

With that in mind, it’s little wonder clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle United and Liverpool are all monitoring the £60k-per-week midfielder.

But after footage emerged with the 24-year-old speaking to one starstruck fan at the London Stadium, love for the player seems to have gone up even higher.

As the video shows, Rice can be seen comforting the young supporter who seems a little overwhelmed after meeting one of his heroes. The Englishman then calms the child and gives him his shirt.

It’s a very wholesome exchange and people online really appreciated the kindness. Here are some of the best Twitter reactions…

And the praise kept coming…

Crystal Palace Expected To Bid For £13m "True Warrior"

Crystal Palace are now expected to make a bid for Galatasaray right-back Sacha Boey this summer, according to recent reports from Turkey.

Who is Sacha Boey?

Boey has caught eye with his fantastic performances for Galatasaray this season, averaging a 7.26 match WhoScored match rating in the Turkish Super Lig, which ranks the right-back as the second-best performer in his squad.

The Frenchman is coming to the end of just his second season in Turkey, and he is still contracted until June 2025, however he could be on the move this summer, with a number of teams looking to sign him in the upcoming transfer window.

According to a report from Fotomac, a whole host of clubs from across Europe are expected to make bids for the 22-year-old this summer, including Palace, Arsenal and Wolfsburg, meaning competition for his signature is going to be fierce.

Galatasaray are set to demand at least €15m (£13m) to sanction the departure of the defender, who is now set to leave the Turkish club, and they have already set their sights on potential replacements, including former Arsenal man Hector Bellerin.

Will Crystal Palace sign Boey?

It is clear that Palace will need to sign a new right-back in the summer, given that both Nathaniel Clyne and Joel Ward are set to be out of contract at the end of the season, with no new deal seemingly on the horizon for either player.

Given that both players are approaching the latter stages of their career, a younger option may be required even if one of them ends up staying at Selhurst Park, and Boey could prove to be an excellent signing.

Soccer Football – Europa League – Round of 16 Second Leg – Galatasaray v FC Barcelona – Turk Telekom Stadium, Istanbul, Turkey – March 17, 2022 Galatasaray’s Sacha Boey in action with FC Barcelona’s Pedri REUTERS/Murad Sezer

Hailed as a "true warrior" by members of the media, the former Rennes man has done a stellar job defensively for Galatasaray this season, averaging 2.7 tackles per game in the Super Lig, the second-highest amount of any player in the squad.

That figure is a huge increase on the amount of tackles any Palace player has amassed in the Premier League, with Ward averaging 1.8, and Clyne just 1.2, while Boey also scores higher than both of them for interceptions.

It is no guarantee the Galatasaray ace would be a success at Selhurst Park, given that he is unproven outside of the Super Lig, but he has shown very promising signs this season, and the Eagles should at least test the waters with a bid.

Worcestershire Rapids kept alive their slim hopes of reaching the NatWest T20 quarter-finals with a five wicket victory over local rivals Birmingham Bears after some explosive hitting from Ross Whiteley. The Rapids ended a run of five successive defeats in completed matches and completed a double over their neighbours to retain the Norman Gifford Trophy. Some explosive hitting by Ross Whiteley enabled the Rapids to reach their 165 target with four balls to spare. He showed the form which brought him 29 sixes in last season’s competition in smoting an unbeaten 42 off 20 balls with four sixes and three fours. Now the Rapids must now defeat Derbyshire Falcons in their final North Group match and hope other results go their way if they are to reach a fourth quarter-final in five years. In contrast, Birmingham’s colossal collapse when baqtting meant they have now lost three matches in a row in the competition to undermine their own hopes of a last eight spot.Dougie Brown, Birmingham’s director of cricket, said: “It wasn’t a case of the game drifting away. We were masters of our own demise again. We were last week as well. We lost eight wickets for 19 runs from a real position of authority.”Worcestershire were immediately on the back foot as they lost three wickets inside the first four overs.Tom Kohler-Cadmore clipped Rikki Clarke into the hands of deep mid wicket, Joe Clarke played on to Oliver Hannon-Dalby and Joe Leach sliced Recordo Gordon to backward point.Brett D’Oliveira, who this week earned his first England Lions call-up, and skipper Daryl Mitchell tried to repair the damage as their half century stand came up in seven overs. The Rapids needed 95 off the final 10 overs and Mitchell targeted the first over from Aaron Thomason to increase the tempo, striking two sixes as the all-rounder conceded 19 overs. The return to the attack of Clarke ended a stand worth 76 in nine overs as D’Oliveira skied a comfortable catch to Josh Poysden at backward square leg.Mitchell reached his half-century off 29 balls with two sixes and four fours but Clarke also brought about his downfall on 61 as he drilled a catch to Sam Hain at mid off. But then Whiteley moved into overdrive with support from Ben Cox to turn ther game in ther Rapids favour.Birmingham appeared to be heading for a score in excess of 200 after reaching 120 for 1 in the 12th over. But a dramatic collapse saw nine wickets fall for just 35 runs and the Bears were bowled out for 164 in 19.3 overs.Australian wicket-keeper Matthew Wade led the initial onslaught for the visitors in his second T20 appearance for the Bears. He raced to a half century off just 23 balls with the aid of three successive sixes over long on off spinner D’Oliveira in an over costing 25 runs.Wade and Sam Hain plundered 103 in just nine overs for the second wicket. But the Rapids struck back once Wade, having made 74 off 32 deliveries, was caught by Rhodes at long-on off Ed Barnard.Rhodes then came into the attack and in his second over picked up three wickets as Laurie Evans, Hain (46) and Clarke all perished to the off spinner.Ateeq Javid was run out attempting a second run in the next over from Rhodes before Mitchell pulled off a fine one-handed catch at mid wicket to account for Jeetan Patel.Rhodes finished 4 for 13 from three overs in only his second T20 appearance before Henry polished off the innings with two wickets in his final over of his current spell at New Road.
