Crystal Palace eyeing up clinical new striker who "terrifies opponents"

Crystal Palace are said to have a clinical new striker target on their radar as manager Roy Hodgson seeks to address that area of the squad.

Palace among Premier League's lowest scorers

The Eagles lie a lowly 13th in the Premier League table, having scored just five goals in their last five league matches with a single win to boast in that time. Palace rank among the division's lowest-scoring sides, and despite an upturn in form for Odsonne Edouard, it is believed the south Londoners are keen on signing a new striker.

Red Bull Salzburg ace Karim Konate, who has enjoyed an electric start to the Austrian season, is one name Palace are reportedly keeping tabs on.

By his own admission, Edouard also suggested that he is eyeing a move away to one of the top European clubs if he can maintain his own brilliant start to 2023/2024 – meaning Palace may have to weigh up future replacements for the Frenchman.

“I try to give the best version of myself every time I step onto a pitch," said Edouard to PSG's official website, as translated by Sport Witness.

"Making the supporters at Selhurst Park proud is my goal. It is by achieving successful performances that I could aspire to join one of the biggest European clubs. I strive to become a striker that matters on the European scene. It is therefore important to have a great season with the Eagles.”

It will be interesting to see who Palace, and by extension sporting director Dougie Freedman, could bring in to support Hodgson in the forward areas, with news now coming to light on an interesting new target.

Palace eyeing up Thijs Dallinga

Indeed, it is now believed Palace are eyeing Toulouse forward Thijs Dallinga. According to TEAMtalk, Hodgson's side are impressed by the Dutchman's performances in France and are keeping tabs on his progress ahead of a possible swoop.

Dallinga is also being watched by Bournemouth and Brentford with all three clubs, including Palace, searching for striking reinforcements. The 23-year-old has performed brilliantly so far this season, scoring seven goals already across his Europa League and Ligue 1 appearances.

Dallinga "terrifies opponents" with his positioning

Dallinga is continuing to earn rave reviews across the channel, with a report by The Athletic describing him as an attacker who "terrifies opponents" with his positioning. The former Excelsior star bagged 18 goals in all competitions over his debut campaign for Toulouse last term, playing a heavy hand in their eventual French Cup triumph as well.

"He has the ability to attack the spaces in behind but also come short to play the passing game," wrote journalist Ahmed Walid earlier this year (The Athletic).

"The first part is clear in Dallinga’s constant signalling for the ball to be played behind the defence, regardless of how far away he is.

"The centre-forward doesn’t get tired from making off-ball runs behind the defence, even if the pass doesn’t arrive, however, when the pass comes, he is ready."

Johann Myburgh, the Somerset batsman, has announced he will retire at the end of the season. He initially joined the club on a one-year deal in 2014 but was then retained. Last week he struck his maiden T20 century, off 42 balls, against Essex. He wrote an open letter to the Somerset team and the supporters thanking them for his time at the club.”What a special place this has been for me and I have felt so at home here in Taunton. My boy Joshua was born at Musgrove Park Hospital and I’m convinced that I now have Somerset blood pumping in my veins,” he said.

“My team-mates have of course played a massive role in my enjoyable time here in the South West. I have made friendships that will last forever, seen young boys turn into men and enjoyed the inner child in the seasoned guys. I want to take this opportunity to thank you all for the great times both on and off the field and more importantly, for accepting me into your changing room and making it ours.”Myburgh had been highly rated as a youngster growing up in South Africa. In 1998, as a 17-year-old schoolboy, he broke Graeme Pollock’s record to become the youngest double-centurion in South African first-class cricket and played for South Africa U-19s alongside the likes of Graeme Smith and Jacques Rudolph. However, he then moved to New Zealand with the aim of going through the three-year qualification period to be eligible for them but as he came close to completing it he then opted for a Kolpak move to the county game where he joined Hampshire in 2010. In 2012 he had a T20 contract with Durham then after a year of club cricket joined Somerset.Andy Hurry, Somerset’s director of cricket, said: “During his time with the county, Johann has been a key member of the Somerset family. Not only is he an outstanding cricketer and athlete, he is a gentleman, a leader and a friend to all associated with the Club.”He is an outstanding role model and mentor, and our young players will have taken much from his experience over the years. He has taken the decision to retire whilst he is still enjoying the game, as well as positively influencing matches as he showed last week with his exceptional innings against Essex Eagles.”I feel privileged to have worked with Johann and I am certain that whatever he does next he will approach with the same passion and professionalism that he has demonstrated during his years here. Everyone associated with the Club wishes him and his family the very best for the future.”

Sky Sports: Ratcliffe and Man Utd eyeing move to sign £100m+ "warrior"

Manchester United are thought to be eyeing up a possible 2024 move for a teenage midfielder, according to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg.

Man Utd transfer news…

The Red Devils haven’t had the best of starts to the new season under Erik ten Hag despite bringing in eight new players over the summer. Four defeats from eight in the Premier League alongside back-to-back losses in the Champions League have seen pressure building on the manager. However, in recent updates on Ten Hag’s future at Man Utd, the Red Devils aren’t yet considering parting ways with the Dutchman following a successful first year at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, the Man Utd takeover saga looks set to come to an end soon, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe set to invest in the club after Sheikh Jassim withdrew his offer over the weekend. Ratcliffe and INEOS are on course to pay £1.3bn for a 25% stake in the club and are expected to run the football operations as part of the deal.

Therefore, they look set to be in control of signings in the New Year, with one possible addition being Benfica’s Joao Neves. The midfielder, who has a £100m+ release clause, has recently been linked with a move to Old Trafford, and a Man Utd transfer update has been shared by Sky Sports’ Plettenberg, who said:

“João Neves is a potential transfer target for Man Utd! Not in winter, but for summer – confirmed. The 19 y/o midfielder is on the list of MUFC for a long time. More top clubs are monitoring the top talent from SL Benfica!”

Benfica's Joao Neves

Joao Neves profiled

Neves could well be a possible signing next summer then, by which time he will be approaching his 20th birthday. He can play as a defensive, central or attacking midfielder and has enjoyed a brilliant rise over the past 12 months, with Neves’ transfer value going from €400,000 to €20m, as per Transfermarkt.

Already a Portugal international, Neves has been labelled as a “warrior” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig and has progressed through Benfica’s youth system, making 31 senior appearances in all competitions. (Joao Neves stats – Transfermarkt)

Former trainer Luis Castro has also praised Neves recently, describing him as a “complete” player who could shine in the Premier League, should a move materialise.

“(He can) play in any championship in the world. (He’s) a complete and very intelligent player. The Premier League is the best league in the world, and not only would he be able to adapt, but he would also play and shine.

“Knowing João, I think he is not worried about the next step but about the next game. He had good training at Benfica, but at family level he also had a lot of support. He is very focused. I believe that if and when he takes the leap he will be prepared. He started training with the A team around the time of the World Cup because they needed him, and I told my technical team that we probably wouldn’t see him again. I knew his quality and his way of working.”

Therefore, it looks as if a move will be one to keep an eye on over the next six months or so, where United may be hoping to be in a good position to get a deal over the line.

Farhad Moshiri's Worst Everton Signings – Ranked

Record-breaking transfers, relegation battles and a whole host of managerial sackings – Farhad Moshiri’s tenure as Everton owner was chaotic.

The Iranian businessman’s arrival on Merseyside was welcomed with much optimism due to his well-documented wealth. That money, however, has not been spent well to say the least, with just over £600m worth of transfers seemingly going to waste in recent years.

Moshiri’s spell of eight turbulent years came to an end when he was replaced by the Friedkin Group in December 2024.

Here, we take a closer look at some of the worst Everton signings under Moshiri’s ownership.

10 Salomon Rondon

Now, this was a move that had flop written all over it, and the only reason it isn’t higher on this list is that there was no fee involved.

The only reason Rondon joined the club in August 2021 is due to Rafael Benitez, whom he had played under at Newcastle United and Chinese Super League outfit Dalian Pro.

In all, the Venezuelan striker made 31 appearances for the Merseysiders, scoring just three goals and providing a single assist. Those are atrocious numbers, and when it was clear that he wasn’t at the required level, he agreed to terminate his contract with the club six months early.

Poor decisions were rife during the short-lived Benitez era, and Rondon’s signing was chief among them. Granted, the Spanish boss will have been hamstrung by Financial Fair Play constraints at the time, but this only serves to point the finger at Moshiri once more, as his catalogue of previous expensive mistakes is clearly continuing to hurt the club to this day.

9 Theo Walcott

Now, there is no denying that Theo Walcott had a rather excellent career in the Premier League; you can’t spend 12 years at a club like Arsenal and not have something special about you.

However, when he finally left north London and joined Everton, he was undeniably past his best, and his record for the Toffees shows that.

In total, the former Gunner made 85 appearances for the Toffees, in which he scored 11 goals and notched nine assists, giving him a goal involvement on average every 4.25 games. Were he signed on a free, those kinds of numbers could be seen as good enough, but he wasn’t free. In fact, he cost the club a whopping £20m when they signed him in the summer of 2018.

Ultimately, Walcott wasn’t an atrocious signing for the club, but you would generally want to get more out of an experienced attacker who costs £20m, so he has to make this list. Whoever sanctioned this has a lot of explaining to do.

8 Moise Kean

Moise Kean was destined for Everton greatness when the club signed him from Juventus for an initial fee of £29m in August 2019, but after just 39 appearances for the club and three seasons on loan, he was sold back to the Old Lady.

Admittedly, the fact that Everton were able to sell the player for £25m – practically erasing the cost of signing him in the first place – is rather impressive, but it doesn’t make that transfer any less of a failure.

In his 39 appearances, the young Italian scored just four goals and provided two assists, which is well below what was expected of him. He also picked up a straight red during his time with the Toffees.

In all, he failed to live up to the hype, and the four years he spent at the club were a waste of time for all involved.

7 Fabian Delph

Now, this might seem a little bit harsh to some; after all, Fabian Delph was a Premier League winner at Manchester City and could well have been a difference-maker at Everton had it not been for injuries that weren’t his fault – but that is the problem: he was always injured.

Delph signed for the Toffees in July 2019 for a reported fee of £8.5m, which for someone of his experience, seemed like a reasonable deal, especially as he signed a three-year contract at the club.

However, injury problems quickly arose, and before he had even seen his first Christmas as an Everton player, he had already missed 25 games for club and country through a myriad of injuries. In total, Delph would miss 63 games through injury as an Everton player and make just 41 appearances across three campaigns.

This signing was only made worse by the fact that it was well-known just how injury-prone he was before Everton signed him, but they did it anyway.

6 Jean-Philippe Gbamin

Gbamin joined the club in the summer of 2019 for a reported £25m from German outfit Mainz.

Hopes were high when the midfielder first arrived on Merseyside, with Everton having reportedly shrugged off interest from the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham to land the Ivory Coast international.

Sadly for both Everton and Gbamin, the midfielder’s time in England has been constantly plagued by injury, with the player’s agent recently describing his Everton spell as ‘a nightmare’.

Racking up only six Premier League appearances to date, Gbamin’s body has prevented him from making the impact he would have desired.

Recent loan moves to CSKA Moscow and Trabzonspor have not changed the midfielder’s fortunes, as he remains without a club after leaving Goodison Park in the summer.

5 4 Yannick Bolasie

One of the first signings of the Moshiri era, Bolasie’s flair and unpredictability during his time at Crystal Palace got a lot of Everton fans excited ahead of his move.

Joining for around £25m, the winger had an impressive start to life on Merseyside, contributing to five goals in his first 13 games. Bolasie then, however, would sustain a cruciate ligament rupture just four months after arriving at Goodison Park – an injury that would ultimately derail his Everton career.

Bolasie would only go on to make a further 16 appearances for Everton the next season and then headed out on a number of loans to clubs such as Aston Villa and Sporting CP, later leaving the club on a free transfer in 2021.

3 Davy Klaassen

Regarded as one of the most talented players in the Netherlands at the time of the move, Klaassen joined Everton for £23.6m from Dutch giants Ajax in the summer of 2017.

However, the midfielder, could not replicate the form that he had shown back in his homeland, ultimately failing to make an impact on Merseyside.

Seemingly struggling with the pace of the English game, the Dutchman only went on to make seven league appearances in his one season at the club.

He later left the Toffees to join Werder Bremen in a deal that saw Everton lose £13m on the player in the space of a year.

2 Cenk Tosun

Following the departure of Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United, the Toffees were in dire need of a goalscorer back in 2017. This led to them signing Turkish striker Cenk Tosun in a deal just shy of £30m.

After notching six goal contributions during the Champions League group stage earlier that season, Everton fans will have been hopeful that Tosun could fill the void left by Lukaku.

With four goals in his first seven games, the striker started well under the stewardship of Sam Allardyce. However, that is as good as it got for Tosun, as following the departure of Big Sam, the Turkiye international struggled for goals and game time under his successor, Marco Silva.

Scoring four league goals over the next two seasons, Tosun fell down the pecking order at Goodison Park – heading out on two loan moves at Crystal Palace and Besiktas in search of minutes.

Tosun eventually left Everton to join Besiktas permanently on a free transfer in 2022, meaning the Toffees did not recoup a single penny of the £28m they paid for the striker.

1 Sandro Ramirez

First hailed as an astute piece of business, the La Masia graduate joined the Toffees back in 2017 for what was an apparent bargain £5.25m fee.

The Spaniard’s performances on Merseyside soon changed those opinions, as the striker struggled to resemble anything like a top-flight striker – scoring only one goal in 16 disappointing appearances for the club.

Sandro would head out on numerous loan moves to clubs such as Sevilla and Real Sociedad, before leaving Everton permanently in 2020 to join SD Huesca on a free transfer.

Man United: Romano drops Ten Hag update with "alarm bells ringing"

To say that Manchester United have got off to a poor start in the Premier League this season would be an incredible understatement. Everything has gone wrong for Erik ten Hag following such an impactful debut campaign last time out.

Five games into the season, the Dutchman has had injuries to key players such as Luke Shaw, off-field disputes with the likes of Jadon Sancho, and the results to match what is going from a blip to a potential full-blown crisis at Old Trafford.

United have already lost three of their five games, and their victories have hardly been convincing either. And, with that said, Fabrizio Romano has dropped an update about the future of Ten Hag.

What has Fabrizio Romano said?

In the previous campaign, Ten Hag successfully took United into the Champions League places, and even picked up his first trophy for the club, defeating Newcastle United to win the Carabao Cup. So, fans at Old Trafford would be forgiven for thinking that the opening few weeks of his second season in charge would go slightly better than they have, especially after welcoming the likes of Andre Onana, and Rasmus Hojlund.

It has been quite the opposite, however, placing pressure on the former Ajax manager to turn things around. Things didn't get much better against Brighton & Hove Albion, either, with United losing 3-1 against the Seagulls at home.

Speaking in his Caught Offside column after the defeat, Romano spoke about Ten Hag's future, saying: "The defeat at home to Brighton will obviously have alarm bells ringing with some fans, but my view is that Ten Hag did an excellent job last season because the situation he inherited was complicated.

“Now he needs some time and also to have some players back from injuries because there are many important players not available for different reasons. I’d say: keep calm, let Ten Hag work as he’s an excellent coach. No panic.”

Should Manchester United sack Erik ten Hag?

Just five games into the season, and with his squad facing plenty of issues, it would be a fairly harsh decision to sack Ten Hag. That said, he must turn things around at Old Trafford, after being backed so heavily in the summer transfer window.

It doesn't exactly get any easier for the manager, however. Quite the opposite, in fact. Up next, the Red Devils travel to Germany to face Bayern Munich in their first game of the Champions League group stage. With the pressure on against such a talented side, Ten Hag will be hoping to see his side get a surprise result and kickstart their season in the process.

If things take an even greater turn for the worse, though, then suddenly Romano's verdict of "no panic" may begin to fade away when it comes to those in charge of making the decisions at Old Trafford.

Of course, for now, patience is needed, but it will certainly be interesting to see how much time Ten Hag bought himself during last season's successful debut at Manchester United. A blip is quickly becoming a crisis, that's for sure.

In-form Pakistan heavy favourites against inexperienced West Indies

Big Picture

The series between the top-ranked team playing at home and a West Indian team without its key players doesn’t have much by way of intrigue in it. Since the PSL final, the hype, the excitement, clamour for tickets, mayhem on the streets, overwhelming security and crazy marketing campaigns have all been toned down. It’s not about the revival of international cricket so much as its normalisation now.Pakistan have the upper hand, what with the West Indies featuring an inexperienced, depleted side. The series may end up being a one-sided affair after Cricket West Indies had to scramble to assemble a squad of 13 players ready to visit Pakistan. Many automatic selections including Chris Gayle, Jason Holder and Evin Lewis along with the T20 captain Carlos Brathwaite pulled out. The series will see West Indies vice-captain Jason Mohammed step up to lead the side in the absence of regular captain Brathwaite in the three-match series.Although Pakistan head coach Mickey Arthur somewhat patronisingly termed West Indies a “dangerous” side that had “nothing to lose”, the biggest challenge for the visitors is to keep the series competitive. They have to recover from the jetlag, having to turn up to play just hours after landing in Karachi from the Caribbean. Pakistan, on the other hand, have been in the city for several days, and been training well ahead of the three back-to-back-to-back games.Pakistan’s 15-man squad has plenty of young, in-form players raring to go in the international games. The batting is centred around Fakhar Zaman, Shoaib Malik and Babar Azam, while the bowling is led by Mohammad Amir and Hasan Ali, with a new sensation in the 17-year-old fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi likely to make his debut.Pakistan are presently atop the world T20I rankings and the three-match series will give them the opportunity to widen the gap between themselves and Australia at No. 2. A 3-0 victory will see Pakistan consolidate their position, while in the unlikely event of them suffering a 3-0 reverse, they will slip to fourth.

Form guide

In the spotlight

Given his indifferent form in the PSL, Ahmed Shehzad‘s selection for the home series raised a lot of eyebrows. The opening batsman had a poor PSL season with the bat, scoring 173 runs at 19.22 with a strike rate of 85.22, but selectors have decided to stick with him given his decent T20I form. A propensity to play out far too many dot balls for the modern game often sees him come under fierce criticism, but he is the second-highest run-getter for Pakistan in T20Is since the start of 2017, behind only Babar Azam, with 367 at 33.36. He will look to improve his numbers further against West Indies’ short-of-big-names side. There is no denying West Indies’ inexperience, but it is the one side you wouldn’t bet against in this format. One man Pakistan wouldn’t want to write off in particular is Marlon Samuels. Twice a World T20 winner – not to mention Man of the Match in both finals he’s played, Samuels will be the major driving force for the Caribbean side, and is expected to provide much-needed support for captain Jason Mohammed. When West Indies visited Pakistan last 12 years ago, a memorable unbeaten 100 from Samuels in Multan saw West Indies rout Pakistan. Shoaib Malik – the only Pakistan survivor from that game – will be sure not to let his side underestimate him.

Team news

Pakistan will open with Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam, and not play Ahmed Shehzad most likely. Hussain Talat is set to make his debut at No. 3 and Asif Ali will likely get his international cap too, but Shaheen Afridi will have to wait.Pakistan (likely XI): 1 Fakhar Zaman, 2 Babar Azam, 3 Hussain Talat, 4 Sarfraz Ahmed (capt & wk), 5 Shoaib Malik, 6 Faheem Ashraf, 7 Asif Ali, 8 Shadab Khan, 9 Mohammad Amir, 10 Hasan Ali, 11 Mohammad NawazIt’s difficult to predict West Indies’ combination, but there is no news of injury. With two uncapped players of their own, the first game could see several players from each side taking their first steps in international cricket.West Indies (likely XI): 1 Andre Fletcher, 2 Chadwick Walton, 3 Marlon Samuels, 4 Jason Mohammed (capt), 5 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 6 Rovman Powell, 7 Keemo Paul, 8 Rayad Emrit, 9 Veerasammy Permaul, 10 Samuel Badree, 11 Kesrick Williams

Pitch and conditions

The temperature in Karachi has risen drastically since the PSL final last week, touching 40 degrees Celsius, but the sea breeze in the evening should make the weather more pleasant. The pitch is expected to be hard with the sun baking it all day, and a run-fest could be on the cards.

Stats and trivia

  • Pakistan have a 6-1 win-loss record at home in seven T20Is. Their only defeat was to World XI last year.
  • Since the start of 2017, Pakistan have been the best T20I side in terms of results, with a 10-3 win-loss record.
  • In the last 15 months, Babar Azam has been Pakistan’s highest run-getter (461 at 41.90) and Shadab Khan their highest wicket-taker (19 at 16.15).

Crystal Palace Set To Lose Star For Summer Steal

christopher-nkunku

According to Dan Bardell, whoever put in the release clause in Michael Olise's Crystal Palace contract must be "absolutely fuming" with the recent developments for a key reason.

The 21-year-old looks set to depart Palace this summer after two seasons at Selhurst Park.

What is the latest news on Michael Olise?

Olise looks set to make the switch to Chelsea in the coming days.

That is according to David Ornstein, who reports that on Tuesday the Blues activated the release clause in the young Frenchman's contract and expect to complete the deal for the currently injured forward in the coming days. It is believed that Palace will receive a guaranteed £35m from the deal that will take the former Reading man to Stamford Bridge, and take Chelsea's spending for this window to over £300m.

michael-olise-premier-league-transfers-chelsea

The Blues weren't the only side interested in the creator, with Manchester City reportedly eying up the Palace star as a potential Riyad Mahrez replacement following the Algerian's switch to the Saudi Pro League with Al-Ahli. Ultimately, it seems that the reigning Premier League champions have moved onto an alternative target in the form of Rennes winger Jeremy Doku, with the club reportedly having agreed personal terms with the player who Jurgen Klopp earmarked as Sadio Mane's successor in 2017.

Chelsea's summer signing Christopher Nkunku suffered a devastating knee injury in pre-season which is set to rule him out for four months, and the arrival of Olise could help fill the creativity void in the short term, and give the Blues a fantastic young option for the long term both in the middle of the park and out wide.

Speaking on Sky Sports Good Morning Transfers show, presenter Bardell praised the window that Chelsea have had so far, and stated that Crystal Palace will be gutted to lose Olise just as he was really stepping into the mold of a team player:

"Chelsea are having an incredible window with the type of player that they are bringing in under this manager. Like I said earlier, I like Olise's development. He's operated in the high-level academies, he's gone to a Championship club, got in the team there, done it in the EFL, gone to Crystal Palace and again had a good couple of seasons there learning his trade and now the time feels right to get that move to Chelsea.

"In the modern-day market as well, I mean whoever put that clause in Crystal Palace must be absolutely fuming because £35m for a 21-year-old player who has got two years in the Premier League now, someone whose game really developed last season, it felt like the end product came a little bit more last season but also if you watch him, he seemed a bit more switched on defensively, became more of a team player, so just as Palace have gotten him to that level, you're losing him for £35m which is a snip."

Will Michael Olise be a big miss?

Olise was incredibly impressive for Crystal Palace

Last season the winger made 37 appearances for the Eagles in the Premier League and was the sides second-best performer in the division according to WhoScored, being just 0.04 behind to performer Eberechi Eze. The 21-year-old recorded two goals and 11 assists whilst also recording 1.9 key passes and 1.5 successful dribbles per 90.

Olise is a creative force, who according to FBref sits in the top 10% for assists, progressive passing distance, key passes, crosses into the penalty area, and shot-creating actions per 90 minutes.

The French youth international impressed both Palace managers he played under, with Patrick Vieira stating:

"When you look at the last round and this one, he played well. He can score goals, create chances and he is a special talent."

Whilst current boss Roy Hodgson stated: "What I make of him is that I think he is an enormous talent – he has got a great possibility to have a wonderful career and a wonderful future. We can only hope we at Crystal Palace can give him that platform.”
