Lancashire 322 (Vilas 90, Croft 63) and 96 for 3 (Davies 54) lead Leicestershire 409 for 8 (Slater 172, Ackermann 94, Azad 58) by nine runs Ben Slater hit a career-best 172 and Colin Ackermann 94 as Leicestershire declared with a first-innings lead of 87 before taking three early wickets as opponents Lancashire closed the third day just nine runs ahead in the Bob Willis Trophy match being played at Blackfinch New Road.Keaton Jennings went caught at third slip off Chris Wright for 8, the ball looping off an inside edge and his pads, Josh Bohannon was leg before wicket to a full delivery from Ben Mike for 3, and Alex Davies leg before for 54 missing a pull at a delivery from left-arm spinner Callum Parkinson that went on with the arm to give the Foxes real hope of forcing victory on the final day.Slater, signed by Leicestershire on a two-week loan from Nottinghamshire, shared in a partnership of 165 with Ackermann, a third-wicket record for Leicestershire against Lancashire, beating the 163-run partnership between James Bradshaw and Norman Armstrong at Leicester’s old Aylestone Road ground in 1929.Ackermann was positive from the start when his side resumed on 183 for 2, looking to get forward where possible against an inexperienced bowling attack including three men making their first-class debuts in seamers Ed Moulton and George Balderson, and left-arm spinner Tom Hartley. All bowled straight and to their fields, however, and on a good, dry but slightly slow pitch, Ackermann and Slater found it hard to work the ball to the boundary. Slater kept the scoreboard moving with singles as he worked his way towards 150, going in to lunch on 143 off 318 balls, while Ackermann hit seven fours in reaching 50 off 88 deliveries. Only one chance was created, when Ackermann, on 47, drove a delivery from Balderson that stopped a little in the pitch back towards the young bowler, who was unable to hold the catch very low to his left.It was a different story after the interval as Leicestershire looked to secure a fourth batting bonus point. Having passed 150, Slater lofted Tom Bailey for consecutive sixes over long-on, but a third attempt landed in the hands of Bohannon at deep mid-off.George Rhodes came and went quickly in the search for quick runs, driving Bailey to Dave Vilas at cover, but Ackermann, on 94, looked certain to reach a century of his own until he was called through for an unlikely second run by Tom Taylor and failed to beat Jennings’ throw from the midwicket boundary. When Taylor went lbw hitting across the line at Balderson and Harry Swindells was bowled trying to improvise against Hartley’s left-arm spin, Leicestershire had lost five wickets for 43 runs, but Mike, Klein and Parkinson saw them past 400 before Ackermann declared to ensure the Foxes were able to bowl before tea.Neither Jennings nor Davies were troubled during the seven overs they did bowl before the break, but Jennings’ unfortunate dismissal, followed by those of Bohannon and Davies, means much will depend on Lancashire’s in-form captain Dave Vilas, who was unbeaten on 7 at the close. Before play began, match umpire Alec Swann confirmed Leicestershire seamer Klein had been handed a three-point penalty and a reprimand after being adjudged to have committed a level two offence under Law 43, throwing the ball at another player in an inappropriate and dangerous manner. The incident occurred on the second day of the game, when Klein threw the ball at the stumps but hit Lancashire batsman Danny Lamb on the foot.

Cricket Australia to appoint mental health overseer

The position will report to the head of sports science Alex Kountouris

Cricket Australia are facing plenty of resistance to their financial outlook•Getty Images

In the wake of 40 redundancies at Cricket Australia and more than 150 around the states in the time of the Covid-19 pandemic, there is some logic to the news that the first new job created at the downsized governing body will be devoted entirely to mental health.CA this week advertised for the role of mental health and wellbeing lead, to report to its head of sports science Alex Kountouris. It is a little less than a year since the AFL appointed its own head of mental health and wellbeing, Kate Hall, and the winter after Glenn Maxwell, Nic Maddinson and Will Pucovski all made very public withdrawals from cricket to deal with their mental health. While Maxwell, Maddinson and Pucovski were all dealing with issues stemming one way or another from the unrelenting treadmill of constant cricket, its attendant pressures and risks, the more recent Covid-19 crisis has laid bare matters concerned with what happens when that particular schedule and the sporting business in general are brought to a shuddering halt by unforeseen external events. Both instances, though, have underlined the need for more focus on the area, the better to allow CA’s two dedicated sports psychologists, Michael Lloyd for the men’s team and Peter Clarke for the women’s team and pathways, to spend more time with individual cricketers and staff.Meanwhile the new role is geared at taking a broader approach to the area, whether that be in managing cases between CA, states and W/BBL clubs, updating the governing body’s approach according to new research, or evolving the remit beyond high performance to the whole of CA.”The new Mental Health and Wellbeing Lead will give a greater focus on mental health at Cricket Australia, giving us an individual resource dedicated to this area,” CA’s high performance chief Drew Ginn told ESPNcricinfo. “The role will also provide broader case management support for CA contracted players.”It’s a great chance to prioritise mental health. It will provide further reinforcement to our current psychologists working with our teams. To have a dedicated leader in a national role and having them focus on a national strategy, policy, future partnerships, critical case management and support for players and states is a positive step forward for the sport.Michael Lloyd (left) chats with Australia coach Justin Langer•Getty Images

“This role is more important than ever, particularly in a world where mental health issues continue to be prevalent, particularly with the demands of elite cricket, Covid and all of the uncertainty. It’s crucial for us to provide the right support and environment for our players, coaches and staff, and this builds on fantastic work being done by Michael Lloyd and Peter Clarke.”Required qualifications for the role include post-graduate qualification in psychology/psychiatry, behavioural science, or a related field and clinical practice experience, in addition to senior management and case management expertise. One of the areas needing to be negotiated will be the varying approaches taken in each state association, where not every department has the same structure or resources regarding mental health or other areas. This has only been exacerbated by the aforementioned staff cuts, where only Cricket New South Wales has so far managed to steer clear of cost-cutting.At the same time, CA staff are still regaining their composure after the traumas of April, May and June, when 200 staff were stood down ahead of redundancies that also saw the departure of the chief executive Kevin Roberts amid widespread rancour between CA, the states and the players’ union.”We are looking for a senior mental health professional who has experience in systems leadership,” the position description states. “You will have expertise in the development and operationalisation of best practice mental health and wellbeing strategies, policy, governance and partnerships. In this role you will also be assisting Australian Cricket health professionals in case management.”Reporting to the Head of Sports Science & Medicine, you will bring your previous success in implementing best in class mental health and wellbeing outcomes. This is a pivotal strategic role and your success will be determined by your ability to influence outcomes across a complex stakeholder landscape.”

T20 World Cup provides early test for England's new era

Now coached by an Australian, Heather Knight’s team have started to rebuild after their Ashes drubbing

OverviewA new head coach heralds a fresh start for England, left chastened by their failed Ashes campaign in which they were shown to be significantly lagging behind Australia. Their sole victory of the series, in the final T20I, gave a glimmer of hope and it falls to Lisa Keightley, the Australian appointed as Mark Robinson’s successor, to turn that hope into belief and then results. Aside from the notable retirements of star wicketkeeper Sarah Taylor, Laura Marsh and, before them, Danni Hazell, England have largely stuck with the same core group of players in recent years, so Keightley’s focus has been on instilling confidence within the side. Having stated that she wants England “to bowl teams out”, expect to see a positive, clear-thinking approach if Keightley’s game plan comes to fruition.SquadHeather Knight (capt), Tammy Beaumont, Katherine Brunt, Kate Cross, Freya Davies, Sophie Ecclestone, Georgia Elwiss, Sarah Glenn, Amy Jones, Nat Sciver, Anya Shrubsole, Lauren Winfield, Fran Wilson, Danni Wyatt, Mady Villiers (Coach: Lisa Keightley)Group fixturesFebruary 23: South Africa, WACA

March 1: West Indies, Sydney ShowgroundT20 World Cup historyEngland won the inaugural event in 2009, defeating New Zealand by six wickets at Lord’s. Since then they have finished as runners-up on three occasions – each time to Australia – in 2012, 2014 and 2018.Form guideUntil last year’s Ashes, England had enjoyed a strong run in T20Is through 2019. They swept three-match series in India and Sri Lanka before a home win against West Indies in the only one of their three fixtures that were not washed out during the English summer. But then came two comprehensive defeats at the hands of Australia before their consolation win in the final game. More recently, they have had one loss and one win against India in the tri-series which also included a Super Over victory against Australia in Canberra followed by defeat to the hosts by 16 runs, a margin which proved too great to see England through to the final.Key playersHeather Knight appears to be hitting some timely form. Since leading her side to victory in England’s third and final match against Pakistan in December, she struck 67 against India and a career-best 78 against Australia (and the decisive runs in the Super Over with consecutive fours) to be the third-highest run-scorer for the tri-series. Nat Sciver forms part of a three-pronged all-round threat, along with Katherine Brunt and Georgia Elwiss. Her vast experience in the format, internationally and in the WBBL, should come in handy. Sophie Ecclestone may still only be 20 years old and she may be a spinner in a squad which opted for a more pace-heavy attack, but her ability to hold her nerve and turn a match – see that Super Over again – make her dangerous. Fran Wilson is worth watching for her fielding alone. She took one of the best catches of 2019 during an ODI against West Indies and, if you had to pick an England player who could have pulled it off beforehand, her name would have been right up there with Ben Stokes’.What would be a success at the tournament?Reaching the final. Keightley, has said that she and her players are “planning to be in the final” with a tone that suggested anything less would not be enough. As they are seeded, England, ranked No. 2 in the world, should not meet the No.1-ranked Australians until the tournament decider, provided both sides finish on top of their respective groups. Australia being arguably in the tougher group, featuring New Zealand and India, helps England but means avoiding any slip-ups in the group stage is crucial to their ambitions.

Uh oh: European paper drops news on McKenna possibly leaving Ipswich

As things stand, Ipswich Town are on course to secure sensational back-to-back promotions to reach the Premier League under Kieran McKenna. But that success could come at the ultimate cost with a European club now eyeing a move for their impressive manager.

Kieran McKenna's Ipswich future

It's no surprise that McKenna has been linked with a move away. A manager of his calibre, who has transformed Ipswich, is destined for the top. It just seems a matter of when and not if he'll become a top-flight manager, whether that is with Ipswich or elsewhere in years to come.

Championship Table: Latest standings for the 2024/25 season

Latest English Football League Championship standings 2024/25.

ByStephan Georgiou Apr 22, 2025

Crystal Palace were, of course, reportedly interested in securing his signature to replace Roy Hodgson earlier this year, before eventually turning to former Eintracht Frankfurt boss Oliver Glasner. McKenna remained at Portman Road and now looks set to finish the Championship promotion job that he started.

Amid any potential celebrations, however, clubs will undoubtedly begin to circle once more as the manager is left weighing up his options yet again. Among the clubs that could circle is VfB Stuttgart, who have enjoyed an excellent Bundesliga campaign so far this season. But, like Ipswich, Stuttgart's success could come at a managerial cost, with Sebastian Hoeness already linked with the Bayern Munich job.

Sebastian Hoeness for Stuttgart.

Now, according to Sport Bild via Sport Witness, Director of Football Fabian Wohlgemuth and Stuttgart have placed McKenna on their shortlist of options to replace Hoeness should they need to this summer. Given that Hoeness has taken the Bundesliga club from 16th all the way up to third this season and just four points adrift of Bayern Munich, he would be some act to follow. But McKenna has more than proven his credentials at Portman Road.

In a summer of mass managerial change, McKenna could complete a shock switch to deal Ipswich a major blow.

Ipswich can't afford to lose McKenna

It almost goes without saying just how vital it is that Ipswich keep hold of McKenna for as long as possible. He has been the key to their recent rise and he is the one who is most likely to unlock the Premier League doors sooner rather than later. If Ipswich do fail in their bid for promotion, however, then luring McKenna away should be far easier, given his own ambitions of managing at the best level.

Stuttgart are an ideal next choice too. Whilst on paper, they may seem an unorthodox choice, Stuttgart's rise isn't dissimilar to that of Ipswich's, who also went from a struggling side to one of their division's best teams under the guidance of a young manager. Now, McKenna is perfectly placed to pick up where Hoeness potentially leaves off this summer, should Stuttgart need to make their move.

What's more, the Ipswich Town manager's preferred system also uses a 4-2-3-1 like Honess' does in another concerning similarity for those at Portman Road hoping to keep the man who has already achieved so much at the club. As things stand, McKenna's future is at Ipswich, but if Stuttgart are in need ot a new manager this summer, then the promotion hopefuls will have every right to be concerned.

Chelsea could bench Sterling for £30m star with 4 league starts all season

Since the takeover of Todd Boehly in May 2022, Chelsea have spent over £1b on transfers as they aim to close the gap produced by the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool in recent seasons.

Players such as Enzo Fernández and Moises Caicedo have both joined the Blues for fees over the £100m mark – with the latter breaking the English transfer record after his move from Brighton and Hove Albion in the summer of 2023.

The club also brought in winger Raheem Sterling from Manchester City for a fee in the region of £45m back in July 2022 – with Sterling failing to make a real impact at Stamford Bridge.

The former Liverpool youngster has made 70 appearances for the Blues, scoring 17 times – a disappointing return for the hefty fee the club spent on him a couple of years ago.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino has often stuck with the 82-cap England international despite some of his below-par performances this campaign. The Blues host Leeds United in the FA Cup on Wednesday night, with one player in the Chelsea squad more than deserving of a starting place.

Raheem Sterling stats against Liverpool

The 29-year-old played 67 minutes during the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool, before being replaced by Christopher Nkunku – with Sterling achieving the lowest rating of anyone in the Chelsea squad, as per Sofascore.

Chelsea forward Raheem Sterling.

During his 67-minute display, the winger only achieved 19 touches – completing just eight passes, before being substituted.

The former Manchester City man has always been known for his dribbling ability. However, on Sunday, Sterling attempted three dribbles, failing to complete any of them and also lost possession seven times – giving the ball away once every nine minutes.

Sterling further contested seven duels throughout the final, losing all seven of them – with his substitution justified given the stats from the encounter.

Given the attacker's poor performance, Pochettino should look to unleash winger Noni Madueke against Leeds United in their latest cup outing.

The man to replace Sterling against Leeds

The "unreal" Madueke, as dubbed by scout Jacek Kulig, has found starts hard to come by under Pochettino, with the former PSV man only making four in the Premier League.

The 21-year-old, who joined the Blues from PSV for £30m last January, has huge potential as seen from his time in the Netherlands with the Chelsea faithful yet to see the best of the winger.

Madueke has scored twice for Chelsea in the Premier League this season, with his record impressive given the fact he's only managed 344 minutes in England's top flight.

Noni Madueke.

With the Blues in cup action against Championship side Leeds tonight, Pochettino should look to give the winger a rare start in order to stake his claim for a regular first-team position.

That, coupled with Sterling's current poor run of form, gives the Argentinian a free hit to let Madueke express himself and start to showcase why the club were so keen to spend a hefty amount on him given his tender age.

Azad and Cosgrove set platform for Leicestershire before Sanderson strikes

Leicestershire 276 for 8 (Azad 86, Cosgrove 65) v Northamptonshire
Opener Hassan Azad passed 1,000 championship runs for the season as Leicestershire built a solid first-innings score after being put in by promotion-chasing Northamptonshire at the Fischer County Ground.Azad made 86, sharing a partnership of 122 for the third wicket with Mark Cosgrove as the Foxes reached an imposing 150 for 2. But Ben Sanderson produced the ball of the day to bowl the in-form Cosgrove for a fine 65 before Luke Procter picked up two wickets in two balls to ensure the visitors remained very much in the game. The Foxes lost captain Paul Horton early, Brett Hutton finding the right-hander’s edge with just his second ball of the day, and Alex Wakely taking a low catch at first slip. The pitch was playing well, however, and Colin Ackermann was understandably disappointed when, having reached 16 and beginning to play fluently, he hit Gareth Berg’s first delivery in Northamptonshire colours straight to Rob Newton at point to leave Leicestershire on 28 for 2.Azad and Mark Cosgrove raised a 50 partnership off 77 balls, but Azad did have one fortunate escape when on 34 he clipped a Hutton in-swinger to leg gully, only for New Zealand international Doug Bracewell, signed by Northants for the final three championship games of the season, to drop the chance.Azad and Cosgrove extended their third-wicket partnership well into three figures before Cosgrove, who had hit eleven boundaries and looked in wonderful touch, had his off-bail removed by a fine delivery from Sanderson which straightened off the seam.Procter then bowled Azad off the inside edge before swinging the next ball back in to win a leg before decision against Neil Dexter. George Rhodes, making his Leicestershire debut after joining the county from Worcestershire, dug in, compiling useful partnerships with Harry Swindells, Callum Parkinson and Chris Wright, before reaching an unbeaten half-century shortly before the close.”I didn’t set out with a target at the start of the season, but it means a lot to have achieved the 1,000 run milestone,” said Azad. “There was a little bit of seam movement early and it was hard work, but as the ball got older it came on a bit better, and in the afternoon session, especially with ‘Cozzie’ in his stride, scoring got a little bit easier. Well, for him, anyway!”They bowled really well to bring it back, Procter in particular, but George Rhodes played a really good and hard-working innings to lift us to a pretty good score. Hopefully we can get a few more and really give our bowlers something to bowl at.”Northants bowler Gareth Berg said: “It was fun to get a wicket with my first ball, even if it wasn’t quite the way I’d have liked to. We bowled a bit of a mixed bag overall, but we brought it back.”It wasn’t an obvious decision to bowl first, but we felt if there was anything to come out of the wicket it would be on the first day. We’ll come back tomorrow and hopefully end it quickly.”

Graeme van Buuren seals last-ball win to give Gloucestershire home quarter-final

Graeme van Buuren hit the final ball of the match for six as Gloucestershire squeezed past Sussex by three wickets to secure a home tie in the quarter-finals of the Vitality Blast. Needing six off the final over, Gloucestershire were restricted to four runs off the first five balls by Reece Topley, but van Buuren smashed the last delivery over the longest boundary on the ground at deep midwicket to finish unbeaten on 37 from 20 balls.Gloucestershire looked to have a chase of 164 under control when captain Michael Klinger, fresh from Thursday’s unbeaten hundred against Kent, was helping take his side to 103 for 2 in the 13th over. But Klinger was caught behind off left-arm spinner Delray Rawlins and in his next over Rawlins, who had earlier top scored with 69 in Sussex’s 163 for 8, bowled Ryan Higgins for a duck. With Will Beer picking up Jack Taylor for a single, Gloucestershire were 115 for 5 and needed 48 off the last five overs. Ian Cockbain got them closer with 37 off 25 balls before he was caught at long-on in the 18th over.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Gloucestershire took 12 off the penultimate over from Chris Jordan but Topley appeared to have given Sussex a chance until van Buuren swung with mighty effect off the last ball. It was Sussex’s second successive defeat at Hove, but they had already secured home advantage in next week’s quarter-finals.Sussex had earlier made 163 for 8 after being put in, a slightly disappointing outcome after they had reached 111 for 2 in the 12th over thanks to a stand of 108 from 60 balls between Luke Wright and Rawlins. They came together in the second over after the hosts had lost Phil Salt and Laurie Evans, who was run out by Miles Hammond’s direct hit from backward point after hesitating slightly in backing up Wright’s call for a single.Left-hander Rawlins had a reprieve when Tom Smith dropped a straightforward chance at point off van Buuren when he had scored just a single. He made the most of his fortune, using his strong wrists to whip the ball into the gaps and matching his captain when it came to the big hits as well. They took 20 off Josh Shaw’s first over and it was a surprise when Wright heaved across the line at the former Yorkshire paceman and lost his leg stump for 41. Rawlins fell for 69 when he was caught and bowled off a high full toss from Andrew Tye in the 14th over, having hit eight fours and two sixes in 41 balls faced.Sussex could only score 43 in the remaining six overs as wickets fell regularly. David Wiese made 26 but the outstanding Andrew Tye conceded just 11 runs in his four overs and David Payne backed him up with 3 for 36 including the wickets of Wiese and Ollie Robinson in his final over.
