Kohli says Kuldeep is making a strong case for Test selection

India’s wristspinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal could both find a place in the Test squad, according to Virat Kohli, following their success in the limited-overs games against England. India are set to pick their team for the five-Test series in England in the next few days.”There might be a few surprises in there,” Kohli told Sky Sports after India won the first ODI at Trent Bridge, when asked by Mike Atherton whether Kuldeep had done enough to play the Tests. “Anything is possible because we still have a few days to pick the Test side. Yeah, look, he is making a strong case for himself. So is Chahal. Both of them together are pretty lethal for us. Looking at the English batsmen struggling against them we might be tempted to do that.”Kuldeep’s case is particularly compelling, having taken a five-for in the T20I series and a six-for in the first ODI, on his maiden tour of England. He has played two Tests so far and taken nine wickets at an average of 20.77. Chahal has only featured in limited-overs cricket for India and has played 27 first-class matches for Haryana. He has 70 wickets at an average of 33.90 with two five-fors.The fingerspinners R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have been India’s regular spinners in Test cricket in recent years, but they have lost their place in the limited-overs teams and now face a challenge from the two wristspinners. Although the BCCI has not revealed a date for the Test selection, it is understood the squad will be picked in the next few days. MSK Prasad, the chief selector, joined the Indian squad in Nottingham this week and it’s likely the Indian think-tank will consult the India A coach Rahul Dravid before the squad is announced. Dravid is currently with India A, who are playing West Indies A in the UK.India have so far lost just one match on this tour, which began with two T20Is in Ireland. Before leaving India, Kohli had said his wristspinners would be his primary weapon, especially in the middle overs of ODIs.”When given more overs and more time they become even more lethal when guys are not going hard against them for 4 overs,” Kohli had said. “When they have 10 overs and they have something to play with to come back into the game, they know they have the skill to make an impact.”Kohli summed up the victory in Nottingham as “clinical” and gave credit to Kuldeep, whose 6 for 25 were the best figures for a left-arm wristspinner in ODIs. “Tonight Kuldeep was outstanding. To give away 25 runs on that sort of a pitch and picking up 6 wickets in the first innings with two hard balls was an outstanding spell,” Kohli said. “I don’t think I have seen a better ODI spell for a while.”But why had Kuldeep been dropped for the Bristol T20I? Kohli said that was a “tactical” decision keeping in mind the breeze blowing towards the shorter boundary. “We want him confident because we know he can be a matchwinner. And T20 cricket is such a short game that anyone can make an impact and win you games, but when it comes to longer games we need players who can really make an impact, because in 50-overs cricket if you don’t get wickets in the middle overs it is going to be really difficult.”Kuldeep and Chahal had already proved their worth in South Africa, where India won the ODI series 5-1 – 28 of the 33 wickets they had taken there had come in the middle overs. So far in England, Kuldeep has 18 wickets from 24.3 overs at an economy rate of 4.89 and an average of 6.66. Chahal has got 8 wickets from 30 overs at an economy rate of 6.73 and an average of 25.25.There is also a stark difference in the impact Kuldeep has made in the middle overs against England, who have played Chahal more confidently. Kuldeep has given just 59 runs off 69 balls at an economy rate of 5.13, while Chahal has gone for 132 runs off 198 balls at an economy rate of 7.33.”These two remain a strength for us in the middle overs,” Kohli said. “We got to make sure we keep them strong, keep them confident and put in these kind of performances regularly. These two guys since they have come into the team they have been the difference for us. They remain a huge weapon for us.”

Heino Kuhn's hundred and Darren Steven's six-wicket haul flatten Surrey

Kent equalled their highest one-day total and Surrey never got close to challenging them

In looking to clear the ropes again, Blake skied to Roy at long off to go for 59.Kuhn, who cramped up toward the end of his 193-minute stay, departed for 117 after top-edging a hook to long leg against countryman Morne Morkel, then Dickson, in attempting to reverse paddle, was bowled by Dernbach.Cameos from Stevens and Haggett helped Kent equal their List A record total against Berkshire at Finchampstead in 1994, while, of Surrey’s bowlers, only Curran with a flattering 4 for 75, will want to remember the day.

Wolves: Journo names one player that could "reignite" the club

Wolverhampton Wanderers completed the signing of Manchester City midfielder Tommy Doyle this past transfer deadline day, on a season-long loan with an option to buy for a fee of around £4.3m.

Cityzens boss Pep Guardiola once described Doyle as a “special” player, after he stood out for the Sky Blues in an FA Cup win in February 2021.

The 21-year-old gem comes into a struggling Wolves side who have just three points from the opening four games, leaving them in 15th place heading into the international break.

Doyle is one of eight new arrivals over the summer at Molineux, and fans will be hoping he can fill the void of recent departure Matheus Nunes, who went in the opposite direction joining Manchester City in a £53m move.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, respected journalist and transfer insider Dean Jones has offered an exciting insight into what Wanderers fans can expect from their new man.

What did Dean Jones say about Tommy Doyle?

Jones has stated that Doyle’s potential influence on this Wolves side should not be underestimated.

When asked whether Gary O’Neil should introduce Doyle immediately into the Wolves side after the international break, he replied:

“I think so because Wolves are obviously now producing the results that people feared might be coming their way at the start of the season.”

He continued on Wolves’ start to the season:

“They started okay when they went to Manchester United and put in that performance, so it looked like they might be okay and there had been a few flashes under O'Neil that suggests they could get out of this.

"But they need the new signings to come into the team now and start getting settled. I think Doyle is one I'm particularly excited to see start to show what he is capable of.

"The early joy that Wolves felt from the start of the season is now gone, but somebody like Doyle undoubtedly has the potential to reignite something in that Wolves team."

Where does Doyle fit in at Wolves?

The 21-year-old whiz impressed in the Championship last season on loan at Sheffield United, as they gained promotion back to the Premier League. He played 33 times in all competitions, scoring four goals and assisting seven for his teammates.

Former Sheffield United loanee Tommy Doyle.

For Wolves, Doyle can expect to be one of two more central midfielders, which since the absence of Nunes has included the young Joao Gomes, alongside the more experienced Gabonese midfielder, Mario Lemina.

Upon arrival, sporting director Matt Hobbs waxed lyrical about the City academy gem, stating that he "ticks a lot of boxes" and is "something different" in the engine room, via the club's official website.

It is likely he will be part of Wolves’ squad when the West Midlands side return to action on the 16th of September, where they host in-form title hopefuls Liverpool at Molineux.

O’Neil has already expressed his delight with his new signing stating the addition of his quality will really “affect games at this level,” hinting at Doyle’s readiness to feature in a game of high magnitude.

Tottenham: Spurs Set For Last Gasp "Superstar" Bid

Journalists Ryan Walker and Simon Jones have shared an update on Tottenham Hotspur's possible late bid for Nottingham Forest star Brennan Johnson.

Who will Spurs sign next?

Ange Postecoglou is looking to replace Harry Kane's goalscoring influence after the England international star opted to join Bayern Munich in a potential £103 million deal.

Kane, who bagged 30 goals over his 38 league appearances for Spurs last season, will be a tough, tough player to replace but Postecoglou's new-look and fluid side have done pretty well thus far.

Premier League victories over Man United and Bournemouth showcased the Spurs head coach's brand of open, attacking football but, ahead of a long season, the club arguably need more depth in the attacking areas.

Postecoglou has had plenty of time to weigh up how he'll replace Kane, with the Australian admitting that Tottenham's former star was eyeing the exit door for a long time.

Ange Postecoglou

“I had a conversation with Harry the first day he arrived and he was up front and honest, and I was the same,” Postecoglou said ahead of their opening 2-2 draw against Brentford.

“You get an indication there that he kind of made up his mind: that if the clubs agreed he would go, particularly if it was before the first game. That was my preference as well.

“There's nothing along the way that's sort of made me feel there's anything other than this outcome."

Johnson, who played a starring role in Forest's successful battle against relegation last term, has been reported as one of the number one targets for the role.

brennan-johnson-2

Reporters Walker and Jones, sharing a piece for The Daily Mail, have an update on their interest in the Wales international as Tottenham plot a last gasp bid.

It is believed they're set to make a late offer to sign Johnson, who Postecoglou is a big fan of, mainly due to his versatility across the attacking areas.

However, there is a potential roadblock in the form of Brentford's interest, with the Bees resurrecting talks to sign the 22-year-old after initially pulling out of the race to sign him.

How good is Brennan Johnson?

Johnson racked up eight goals and three assists in the league last term, totalling eleven goal contributions. The player also received some huge endorsements, particularly from ex-Nottingham Forest midfielder Chris Cohen.

"Bren's a superstar, I loved working with Bren," he told BBC Radio Nottingham's Shut up and Show More Football podcast.

"From the first day I saw him play football I knew he was going to be a superstar.

"I actually sent him a video the other day of some clips we did for him when he was 18. I was cold calling League 1, League 2 managers to try and get him out on loan because he was too good for our under-23s team.

"I won't say the name of the club but one actually didn't take him on a free because he didn't want to pay the hotel bill for him – now he's gone onto what he's gone onto.

"It's crazy people couldn't see what everyone in the football club could see but he obviously needed a loan too."

Burnley: Clarets Hold Discussions For "Rolls Royce" Midfielder

Burnley have held discussions with Sheffield United to sign star man Sander Berge this summer, according to reports, as Vincent Kompany looks to add to his midfield options.

The Norwegian has just one year left on his current contract at the Blades.

What's the latest on Sander Berge to Burnley?

The Clarets have opened talks with Sheffield United in an attempt to sign Berge this summer, according to Mike McGrath of The Daily Telegraph, who also stated that the midfielder has been linked with a move away in the past, without transfer away coming to fruition.

With just one year left on his current deal, however, it could be now or never for Sheffield United if they want to receive a transfer fee for the midfielder before his exit.

The Blades initially signed the 25-year-old for a reported £22m, but the midfielder had a release clause of £35m come into play upon Sheffield United's relegation in 2021, according to The Yorkshire Post.

Speaking on Berge's future last summer, manager Paul Heckingbottom told The Star: “Sander, the way he’s handled himself, it’s a credit to him really.

“When you are a player and you find yourself in a position like this, it’s the centre of your world and it can be a distraction. You are dealing with it, thinking about it, all the time. It’s not the same for everyone else, because they have other things to consider as well.

“It’s so important, if that happens, to remain focused and concentrated on your profession. Because, if you don’t, the only person who ends up suffering is the player themselves.”

With that said, now in the Premier League, it remains to be seen whether Berge will make the switch to fellow newly-promoted side Burnley in the coming weeks of the summer transfer window.

Should Burnley sign Sander Berge?

Given Kompany's neat, tidy, and offensive style of play, a midfielder of Berge's quality on the ball wouldn't go amiss for Burnley in the Premier League this season.

Statistically speaking, Berge would be an upgrade on the Clarets' current options, too. According to FBref, the Norway international made more progressive carries, more blocks, and had a better take-on success than three of Kompany's current options, Josh Brownhill, Josh Cullen, and Johann Berg Gudmundsson.

He's earned plenty of praise during his time at Sheffield United for putting up such numbers, with teammate Rhian Brewster telling Sky Sports' Saturday Social: "He’s a Rolls Royce.

“Ask him next time you interview him. What does Rhian call you in training, and he’ll say Rolls Royce. ‘The Rolls Royce is back’ is what I shout at him.”

With that said, if Burnley do push forward with a deal to sign Berge this summer, it would not only strengthen their own side, but also weaken Sheffield United, who they may see as a side they can take six points off in the coming campaign in pursuit of first-time survival back in England's top flight.

For now, however, Kompany's main focus will be on Burnley's opening day clash with former side Manchester City, in a game where he will hope to see his side pull off the ultimate shock.

Celtic Closing In On £4m Deal For Impressive "Revelation"

An update has emerged on Celtic's attempts to add further reinforcements to the playing squad before the end of the summer transfer window…

What's the latest Celtic transfer news?

According to Football Scotland, Bhoys boss Brendan Rodgers is closing in on a deal to sign Legia Warsaw central defender Maik Nawrocki ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

The report claims that the Hoops are pursuing a swoop to sign the 22-year-old enforcer for a fee within the region of £4m, whilst they are also set to include a 15% sell-on clause for the Polish side.

However, it states that Turkish giants Galatasaray remain in the race to land the talented youngster, which could put pressure on the Bhoys to push this over the line as quickly as possible.

How good is Maik Nawrocki?

The German-born titan enjoyed an impressive campaign for Legia Warsaw throughout the 2022/23 campaign and could come in as an immediate upgrade on Yuki Kobayashi.

Celtic's Japanese centre-back arrived at the club in January from Vissel Kobe but struggled to adapt to Scottish football during his first six months in Glasgow.

The 23-year-old colossus averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.80 across six Scottish Premiership outings for Ange Postecoglou last season, which is a score that 21 of his teammates were able to beat.

Meanwhile, the Poland U21 international averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.00 across 25 Ekstraklasa matches for his current club, which would have ranked him six places higher than Kobayashi within the Hoops squad.

Nawrocki, who is proficient with both feet, made more tackles (1.3) and interceptions (1.2) per game than the ex-Yokohoma warrior, who made 0.3 and 0.7 per outing respectively for Celtic.

In fact, no Bhoys central defender managed more of either defensive intervention per clash than the Polish titan, which illustrates how impressive his work at that end of the pitch was for Legia Warsaw.

Legia Warsaw centre-back Maik Nawrocki.

The 6 foot 1 monster also showcased his ability to dominate opposition players with a sublime duel success rate of 61% in the air.

This shows that he is able to rise above forwards to win key battles and could be a threat from set-pieces in both boxes, given that the promising talent scored four league goals – in comparison to his potential competitor's zero strikes in his last 54 league games for Kobe.

Kobayashi, however, struggled to deal with the physicality of Scottish football. He lost 64% of his aerial contests and 63% of his duels in total, which shows that the former Japan U20 international was a lightweight at the heart of the defence.

The weak centre-back was dominated by attackers instead of the other way round.

Therefore, the £4m-valued Celtic target could be a significant upgrade on Kobayashi in that aspect of the game due to his impressive display of strength in Poland last term.

Nawrocki's aforementioned defensive statistics also indicate that he would offer the Hoops more quality in terms of his ability to make vital contributions to cut out opposition attacks.

The superb battler, who was once dubbed a "revelation" by scout Jacek Kulig, is able to make tackles and interceptions to stop his goalkeeper from being worked more frequently.

Kobayashi's disappointing performances for the club this year could be one of the reasons behind Rodgers insistence on another player coming in to bolster his options in that position, with the Polish brute looking like an upgrade on paper.

England set up Test opener shootout

England have set-up a Test shootout for the role of Alastair Cook’s Test opening partner as four batsmen vie for the opportunity in the Lions squad which will face South Africa in Canterbury next week.Haseeb Hameed and Keaton Jennings are the two men in pole position, but they will have to promote their claims alongside the Middlesex batsman Nick Gubbins and Mark Stoneman, who is having a fine inaugural season with Surrey since making the switch from Durham.Jennings is averaging a shade under 40, with only one century, in a Durham side that has been in the doldrums since relegation to Division Two of the Specsavers Championship with a 48-point penalty, but he also had an unproductive Lions tour of Sri Lanka earlier this year as he also came to terms with the responsibilities of captaincy, a role he has retained.Hameed has had a disturbing loss of form, averaging only 19.33 and still to pass fifty in six Championship matches for Lancashire as his inclusion in their 50-over side has coincided with a reduction in the ingrained concentration that won so many plaudits last season. The confidence surrounding England’s one-day side as they have advanced to the semi-final of the Champions Trophy has not been without its own uncertainty about the top of the order with Jonny Bairstow well placed to replace the out-of-form Jason Roy in the semi-final against Pakistan on Wednesday. The questions in the Test side ahead of a four-match series against South Africa, beginning at Lord’s on July 6, are equally pressing, yet with different personnel. Joe Root batted at No. 3 throughout England’s disastrous Test series in India last winter, which if that policy persisted against South Africa, and ahead of this winter’s Ashes series, would leave only a single place available.Somerset’s spin-bowling duo, Jack Leach and Dom Bess, a teenaged offspinner, are both named in the squad. Leach, who played in the Lions’ last four-day game against Sri Lanka A in Dambulla in February, is also joined by another Somerset team-mate in Jamie Overton.Stoneman and Bess, about a decade apart in age, are the only two members of the squad not to have played previously for the Lions. A separate Lions squad will be named next week for a three-day match against the senior South Africa tourists in Worcester starting on June 29.James Whitaker, the national selector, said: “We have had to delay naming that squad because the game clashes with the Royal London One-Day Cup final, and we will not consider players from the counties who qualify for Lord’s.”There were other considerations in selecting this squad – as ever, we were mindful of counties who have important fixtures in the Specsavers County Championship, while four members of the Lions squad who won the Royal London One-Day Series against South Africa A were unavailable after being selected for the full England squad for the NatWest T20 internationals against South Africa.”England Lions squad: Keaton Jennings (Durham, capt), Mark Stoneman (Surrey), Haseeb Hameed (Lancashire), Nick Gubbins (Middlesex), Dan Lawrence (Essex), Ben Foakes (Surrey, wk), Sam Curran (Surrey), Jamie Overton (Somerset), Tom Helm (Middlesex), Jamie Porter (Essex), George Garton (Sussex), Jack Leach (Somerset), Dominic Bess (Somerset)
