Forget Vlahovic: Chelsea could sign "monster" star who’s the "new Haaland"

A striker has been at the top of Enzo Maresca’s shopping list ever since he arrived as Chelsea manager, with this January undoubtedly no different.

The Blues recruited well over the summer window, landing the likes of Pedro Neto and Jadon Sancho, subsequently improving the threat in wide areas alongside Cole Palmer.

However, no deal was completed for a new focal point, leaving Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu as the two out-and-out strikers at the Italian’s disposal.

Nicolas Jackson

The Senegal international has been the number one option in the Premier League during 2024/25, scoring nine times in 19 matches – the second-highest tally behind star man Palmer.

Despite his form in front of goal, it may not be enough to secure his regular starting role, with the hierarchy already looking for attacking reinforcements in January.

Chelsea’s hunt for a new striker in January

Although we’re only a week into the transfer window, numerous names have been touted with a move to Stamford Bridge, including Ipswich Town star Liam Delap.

The 21-year-old joined the Tractor Boys for £20m from Manchester City in the summer but has wasted no time in impressing, scoring eight times in his first 19 top-flight matches in 2024/25.

Such interest has captured the interest of the Blues board, with the Englishman just one of many attackers currently on their radar.

However, Juventus striker Dušan Vlahović is a name that continues to be linked with a move to West London, but Maresca’s side aren’t alone, with Arsenal also in the hunt for the Serbian international.

The 24-year-old has scored seven times in Serie A to date, but could be allowed to leave the Old Lady should any side fork out €75m (£62m) during the January window.

However, despite the interest in the aforementioned players, the hierarchy should reignite interest in another attacker who would undoubtedly improve their front line and potentially be their own version of a Premier League star.

The player who could be Chelsea’s own Haaland

Erling Haaland has been the leading marksman in England’s top division since his move to join Pep Guardiola’s side ahead of the 2022/23 season – finishing as top scorer in both of his two seasons in England.

Erling Haaland in action for Manchester City

The Norwegian has been a constant menace to the backline of every side in the Premier League, registering a staggering 111 goals in just 125 appearances – including 16 this time around despite the Citizen’s recent decline in form.

Every club wishes they could have a clinical scorer, with Haaland having such quality in abundance, but the Blues could land their own version of the superstar in the form of Benjamin Sesko in January.

The Slovenia international was widely linked with a move to the Bridge in the summer, but a deal was never completed, which saw the 21-year-old remain at Bundesliga side RB Leipzig.

He’s continued his impressive form into the current campaign, scoring 11 goals across all competitions – leading to yet more rumours over a move to join Chelsea during the ongoing window.

At the end of December, TEAMtalk confirmed the club were in contact with the German side over a potential move, with Arsenal and Manchester United also waiting in the wings.

The striker would be a superb addition for the club, finally ending their hunt for a new number nine, whilst aiding their ambitions of securing a top-four finish come the end of May.

Sesko had previously been dubbed the “new Erling Haaland” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, with the comparison more than just their huge frame, pace and aerial ability when delving into their respective stats from 2024/25.

Whilst the City ace has massively outscored the Leipzig man, the “monster” Slovenian, as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, has a higher shot-on-target rate, proving that he’s more accurate with the chances he’s presented within the final third.

He’s also completed more take-ons per 90 and won more aerial duels, making him the perfect all-round focal point that the Blues have desperately been hunting for in the past six months.

Whilst it’s unclear how much any deal for Sesko would set the club back, it would be a superb deal regardless given his talents, not to mention his potential to improve given his tender age.

If he does manage to get anywhere close to the level of Haaland should he make the move to England, he would be worth every penny – handing Maresca a deadly finisher to boost their title credentials in the years to come.

Despite the rapid and ongoing expansion of T20 leagues around the world, there is an increase in the amount of bilateral international cricket scheduled in the new ICC men’s Future Tours Programme (FTP) for the next four years. This includes two Border-Gavaskar series – Test cricket’s headline rivalry of the last decade or so – between Australia and India that will, for the first time in over 30 years, be contested over five Tests. The ICC released the 2023-27 FTP on Wednesday, in which the 12 Full Members play a total of 777 international matches – 173 Tests, 281 ODIs and 323 T20Is – compared to the 694 games in the current cycle.Bangladesh play the most bilateral international games (150) in the new FTP, followed by West Indies (147), England (142), India (141), New Zealand (135), Australia (132), Sri Lanka (131), Pakistan (130), Afghanistan (123), South Africa (113), Ireland (110) and Zimbabwe (109).Related

In terms of T20Is, West Indies play the most bilateral matches (73) followed by India (61), Afghanistan (57), Bangladesh (57), New Zealand (57), Pakistan (56), Sri Lanka (54), England (51), Australia (49), Ireland (47), South Africa (46) and Zimbabwe (45).Bangladesh also play the most bilateral ODIs (59), followed by Sri Lanka (52), Ireland (51), England (48), West Indies (48), Pakistan (47), New Zealand (46), Afghanistan (45), Zimbabwe (44), Australia (43), India (42) and South Africa (39).In Test cricket, England play the most matches (43), followed by Australia (40), India (38), Bangladesh (34), New Zealand (32), South Africa (28), Pakistan (27), West Indies (26), Sri Lanka (25), Afghanistan (21), Zimbabwe (20), Ireland (12).The first five-Test Border-Gavaskar series will take place during the 2023-25 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, when India tour Australia in the Australian summer of 2024-25. Australia then tour India during the 2025-2027 World Test Championship cycle for five Tests in January-February 2027. India also play two five-Test series against England – at home in early 2024 and away in 2025. As has been the case for the last few FTPs, there is no bilateral series between India and Pakistan.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Tri-series between Full Members are also set to make a comeback, with Pakistan hosting New Zealand and South Africa in an ODI tri-series in February 2025, Zimbabwe hosting New Zealand and South Africa for T20Is in July 2025, and Pakistan hosting England and Sri Lanka for an ODI tri-series in October-November 2026.There is also an extended window for the IPL, during which very little international cricket has been scheduled, from the middle of March right through to the start of June every year between 2023 and 2027. England and Australia have also created windows in August and January, respectively, in their own international schedules, to allow their marquee white-ball players to participate in the Hundred and the BBL. Bangladesh has done likewise with a window for the BPL in January, during which it plays no international cricket in this FTP.In 2025, the PSL will become the first T20 league to overlap with the IPL because of Pakistan’s packed international season. Starting November 2024, Pakistan have away tours of Australia, Zimbabwe, South Africa and New Zealand, before returning home for a tri-series in February 2025, followed by the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan that ends in March. The PSL will begin only after the Champions Trophy ends, leading to a clash with the IPL.There will also be an ICC men’s event every year of this cycle – the first time that has happened since the 2011-2015 FTP – starting with the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA, the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan, the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, and the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

BCB approves Regional Cricket Associations aimed at decentralising the sport

“We used to control everything from Dhaka but now are going into the divisions,” board president Hassan said

Mohammad Isam19-Jul-2022The BCB approved the much-delayed regional cricket association (RCA) scheme, aimed to decentralise the game in the country. BCB president Nazmul Hassan said that the decision was made during Tuesday’s Annual General Meeting where the board’s constitution was amended. The country’s divisional headquarters Dhaka, Sylhet, Rajshahi, Chattogram, Khulna, Rangpur, and Barisal will have RCAs while the one in Mymensingh, a newly formed division, will be run by Dhaka.Board directors from each region will be working in the respective associations. The larger divisions will have 17 members while the smaller ones will have 11 members.”We used to control everything from Dhaka but now are going into the divisions,” Hassan said. “We had even lesser control at the district level. Once the RCA starts, we will work better there. I am hopeful that we can make it operational before the next board meeting. For now, the councilors have given BCB the responsibility to run the RCA.”The BCB constitution defines regional cricket associations as bodies to run cricket in the different administrative divisions of Bangladesh. It states the BCB should ensure that cricket is run across the country through the regional and district sports associations (DSA).While the DSAs are formed and run by the government in all 64 districts of the country, the regional cricket bodies haven’t seen the light of day despite being in the works for nearly two decades and being included in the board’s constitution since 2012. Hassan had the RCA as his mandate since he first became BCB president in 2013.There was even talk of making one of the divisions, Chattogram or Sylhet, into a pilot project of the RCA in 2015, but that too never materalised.Over the last two decades, the only real connection between the BCB and the divisions and districts of the country have been either through representation of members in the form of councilors and directors, and through the age-group tournaments to find talented cricketers from across the country. The other major decision in the BCB AGM was to increase the number of councilors from the Dhaka’s clubs from 58 to 76. These councilors are among those involved in electing the 12 directors who serve on the board.According to the 2013 amendment, the top six clubs in the points table of the Dhaka Premier League would have two councilor positions, while the other six DPL clubs had one each. Now all twelve DPL clubs would have one councillorship each.In the lower leagues however, all clubs in the Dhaka First, Second and Third divisions will have one councilor each. Since 2013, only the clubs that qualified to the super league of the second and third division leagues would get councilor positions (12 in the case of second division and eight in the third division).Meanwhile, the BCB also formed two additional committees. Bangladesh Tigers, a concept of a training squad to run all year round, has a separate body now, as does the Welfare committee.

'Bruno deserves respect' – Roy Keane called out for 'harsh' criticism of Fernandes as 'loyal' Man Utd captain sees Louis Saha jump to his defence

Louis Saha has called out Roy Keane for his "harsh" criticism of "loyal" Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes.

Keane has been a harsh critic of FernandesHas repeatedly questioned his leadership qualitiesSaha believes the criticism has been "unfair"Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Keane, known for his no-nonsense punditry, has repeatedly questioned Fernandes’ ability to inspire his teammates, often highlighting what he perceives as a lack of composure and excessive complaining on the pitch. He has argued that talent alone is not sufficient for a captain, stressing the importance of leading by example.

"Talent is not enough! You keep going back to talent – Bruno's a talented player, but it's not enough!" Keane stated. "Who were you (Ian Wright) in the dressing room with, Tony Adams! Tony Adams was this, Tony Adams was that, because he was a fighter! You've got young players who have to look at somebody and go 'I like what he does'. They all can't put the ball in the top of the net from 25 yards, I get that, but you want someone who's going 'Lads, are you with me? Are you with me?'"

However, Saha that the criticism directed at the Portuguese playmaker is unjust and could even push him toward an exit from Old Trafford.

Speaking to , the former United forward expressed his fears that excessive criticism might force Fernandes to consider his options.

"He could be tempted because, yes, he has proved over the years that he plays to a certain standard. He plays really well and is still being harshly attacked," Saha said. "I always come to the defence of Bruno because, as I said, I try to explain what I see and I think it's completely unfair. It’s interesting that Roy Keane has criticised him. I understand and I respect his point because he knows his position. He knows what leaders need to do. That's not easy when you are a fan, you criticise harshly. But I would still say it is harsh, because Bruno deserves respect, and as a human being you make mistakes and all sorts."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Saha further argued that Fernandes’ commitment to the club should not be overlooked, especially when the Red Devils are struggling to revive their fortunes since the exit of Sir Alex Ferguson.

"I think he has too much weight on his shoulders and at some point he may consider other opportunities," he added. "Whenever he talks, I don't see someone who just wants to play for the club as much as he can. He is really loyal. He seems to be a very loyal player. So I do think that he will be likely to stay."

DID YOU KNOW?

Fernandes has taken the criticism in his stride and has vowed to use the Irishman's words as motivation.

Speaking after Manchester United's 3-0 win against Leicester City before the international break, Fernandes said: "Obviously, it's not nice to hear those things about you, I think no one likes that. But at the same time, it motivates and makes you think people think there's a lot of things you have to improve.

"You have to take it in a positive way, and think whatever people are saying, if there's a margin for improvement or not. I know you're talking about Roy Keane. I have huge respect for Roy Keane. I think he was one of the best captains the club had. An amazing player for the club, won basically everything for this club."

There are even reports that West Ham could decide to part ways with Fullkrug, which would surely make him go down as one of the Premier League’s biggest flops in recent memory, even if that tag would be harsh considering that he has no control over his Achilles issue.

That being said, GiveMeSport recently suggested that West Ham hold some regret over Fullkrug’s transfer, and this has motivated technical director Tim Steidten to explore emergency short-term alternatives.

West Ham are targeting Lyon striker Georges Mikautadze amid the Ligue 1 side’s precarious financial situation, which could yet doom them to life in Ligue 2 next season.

The Hammers could take advantage of their woes to strike a cut-price move for the Georgia international, given Lyon could be forced to sell players mid-season as they attempt to balance their books.

Meanwhile, another intriguing target linked in the last week is Brighton starlet Evan Ferguson, who is finding it difficult to break into Fabian Hurzeler’s starting XI on a regular basis this season.

West Ham declare intent to sign Evan Ferguson

According to CaughtOffside, the Republic of Ireland international is planning to leave in January, and Brighton won’t stand in his way – piquing interest from east London in the promising £60 million striker.

West Ham have “confirmed their intention” to sign Ferguson in the winter, as per the outlet’s sources, and it is believed they are the current favourites to seal a loan deal for the 20-year-old ahead of Newcastle United, Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal.

The Hammers apparently have the most concrete interest in Ferguson and want to progress on a move for the attacker, who Ian Wright called “very mature” for his age.

“When you look at him, the way he plays, his appreciation for the game, his movement and finishing both feet, good in the air and good pace, he has all the attributes at 18. Very mature in the way he plays,” said Wright in 2023, when Ferguson was just a teenager.

“All he has to do is keep doing what he is doing, and they are going to start talking about him in million terms because that striker is not allowed. You can’t find that guy to come around, who is 18, in the Premier League and at the perfect club to continue to grow.

“They aren’t going to be able to hold onto that guy if he carries on doing what he is doing. He is too good. So intelligent – for 18, it’s really, really composed finishing.

“He is fearless at 18. Can you imagine being in the Premier League at 18? You’re not under the pressure you would be under like Garnacho would be under at Manchester United – you watch the way he plays, all the top teams, the top-six teams. He can play in any of those teams. We know Brighton, at some stage, they will sell him.”

'I want to be involved as much as I can' – Healy still keen to keep and open in Tests

Keeping wicket and opening the batting in Test cricket has been, arguably, the toughest juggling act in the history of the game, but Alyssa Healy is adamant that she wants to do the job again in the women’s Ashes Test starting on Thursday in Canberra.Healy has opened in her last two Test matches, but her returns across the four innings have given a clear indication of how difficult the task of opening and keeping is in the longest format. She made 58 in her first Test innings as an opener in the 2019 Ashes but it was the first innings of the match, giving her the chance to start fresh. She then kept 107 overs before walking straight back out to bat, and made 13 in the second innings.Related

In her last Test, against India earlier this summer, Australia fielded first and Healy kept for 145 overs before walking out to bat under lights against the pink ball. She made 29 from 66 deliveries and then made just 6 in the fourth innings after keeping for 37 more overs in the third innings of the match.”There’s obviously ongoing chats about it,” Healy said. “I think the approach we took in that last Test match we played was we’ll see how we go. I mean, if things don’t quite go to plan, we’re out in the field for an extended period of time and I am feeling fatigued then we make that call on the fly and maybe I don’t open the batting. But I’m always going to stick my hand up and say I’m ready to go and ready to contribute whether that be at the top of the order or with the gloves, so I’m sure it will be okay.”Hopefully, we get the full four days in and I’m out there for all four days. I look forward to that challenge and test my body, physically and mentally. The chats are being had but at this point in time, considering it’s such a one-off event for us, I want to be involved as much as I can.”Only five wicketkeepers in the history of women’s Test cricket have averaged more than 30 while opening the batting, with England’s Betty Snowball the only one to average more than 40. Snowball is the only women’s player to make 400 runs in the dual role, averaging 66.57 with one century and three half-centuries.Betty Snowball keeping during England’s tour of Australia and New Zealand in 1934-35•National Library of Australia

Only six wicketkeepers in the history of men’s Test cricket have made more than 400 runs opening the batting with India’s Budhi Kunderan the only one of those to average more than 40 (43.46).Healy has had remarkable success opening the batting in the shorter formats and suggested that it remained, to her mind, the best place to bat in in Test cricket too.”I still think opening the batting is the best time to bat in any format,” Healy said. “It’s going to be a little bit tricky, obviously with the new red ball, but I’m looking forward to the opportunity and the challenge that the England attack are going to throw at us.”Healy was keen for some time in the middle coming off one of her leanest WBBL campaigns. In her last nine matches, including in the WBBL, the WNCL and the first T20I against England, she has only reached double-figures four times and passed 20 once, scoring 51 for NSW against Victoria. But Healy does have a history of coming off lean spells and delivering on the big stage, having starred in the 2020 T20 World Cup after a horror spell in the lead-in.”I’m actually a little bit quietly excited about the opportunities of some slightly longer-format cricket, obviously the Test match and then the one-dayers leading into a World Cup,” Healy said. “I feel like everything’s back where it should be for me at the crease, and whilst it may or may not have looked like it in the first T20, I feel like I’m in a really good place with my batting again.”So I’m really excited for the opportunity to spend a bit of time out in the middle and, hopefully, get my team into a really good position to win whether it be a Test match or a one-dayer.”The identity of Healy’s opening partner remained a mystery, with Beth Mooney pushing to be fit to play despite fracturing her jaw last week. Rachael Haynes has also put her hand up to open, after having missed the Test against India because of a hamstring injury.”Absolutely no idea. We haven’t even had that discussion yet. We were just trying to get through these T20s. I don’t know the chat around Moons, I’m not really sure where they’re at with her, whether or not she’s playing, not going to play, likely to play, so I can’t really answer that question,” Healy said. “But I’ve got no doubt that we’ve got a lot of coverage here and obviously with the Aussie A squad around, someone would come in and do a really good job. Whoever it might be, I’ll just welcome them to the crease like I did Meg [Lanning] the other night.”

"Brilliant" Newcastle player in line for return after 7 months out injured

In an international break full of positives on the injury front for Eddie Howe, Newcastle United have been handed yet another boost with one long-term absentee now in line for a return.

Newcastle injury news

Barring the continued absence of Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman, who suffered ACL injuries last season, Newcastle are all but back to full strength ahead of their meeting with Brighton & Hove Albion fresh from the international break this weekend. This means that both Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak are in line for much-needed returns, with the former potentially making his first start of the season.

Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson for Newcastle United.

Meanwhile, Isak’s return will mark his first appearance since Newcastle’s 3-1 defeat at the hands of Fulham towards the end of September. Without the Swede, the Magpies have been without a goal from open play in 270 minutes of football in all competitions – a run that Wilson should also help to end of course.

Without a Premier League win in three games, the Brighton game suddenly has added importance as Newcastle look to get back on track. With Wilson, Isak and now one other in line for a return though, their fortunes are certainly looking up.

As reported by Chronicle Live, Lewis Miley has returned to Newcastle training for the first time in seven months and is in line to make his first appearance of the season in the coming weeks.

The young midfielder suffered a broken metatarsal in last season’s FA Cup quarter-final defeat against Manchester City and has faced a long road to recovery ever since. Now, seven months later, he has battled back well and will hope to put himself back in contention for Howe’s side as soon as possible.

Still just 18 years old, Newcastle will likely ease Miley back into action in a run that he’ll hope to pick up where he left off at St James’ Park.

Newcastle must remain cautious with "brilliant" Miley

Whilst Miley was one of the few positives to emerge from Sandro Tonali’s ill-timed suspension last season, the Magpies eventually paid the price for their failure to find other options, with their academy graduate soon suffering a long-term injury. Learning a harsh lesson, Newcastle must not rush Miley back now that he’s returned to training. After all, this is a player who could be at the heart of their midfield for years to come.

Starting 17 games for the first team last season, it’s clear that Miley has the quality to earn a place under Howe but Newcastle must not run their young talent into the ground before he even has the chance to reach his peak.

Howe will need to act with caution when it comes to the full recovery of a player destined for great things, as the Newcastle boss pointed out last season, telling reporters via The Northern Echo: “I believe there’s huge growth in every area of his game – athletically, physically, technically, tactically.

“We’ll never stand still with Lewis and will look to continually help him. But what he has got already is a brilliant brain, and that brain allowed him to play so well (against Chelsea).”
