  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Mullin remains a fan favourite at SToK Racecourse after registering more than 100 goals for the Red Dragons while helping them to promotion out of the National League and League Two. The 2024-25 campaign has been a tough one for the 30-year-old frontman.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The target has been found on just three occasions, with only nine starts being recorded. Mullin has not figured in a matchday squad since February 23, with record-breaking transfer business in January seeing him slip down the pecking order.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

There has been talk of Wrexham sanctioning a sale in the next window, freeing up funds and squad space for further additions, with Phil Parkinson looking for more Championship pedigree to be added to his ranks.

    WHAT EFL PUNDIT SAID

Former EFL star turned pundit David Prutton has told of Mullin’s situation: "As we saw when he first joined the club, dropping out of the EFL, he took a real chance and a gamble. Yes, you would say it was a well-paid gamble, but he's delivered the goals that have given the foundations of a side that has gotten itself into the Championship, which is a glorious thing to see.

"There would be an element of sentiment there, I don't think he would be used sentimentally. I think he's a player that is proven to be a very decent part of this Wrexham side. However, the Championship, as we know, is brutal. Wrexham, potentially, given their financial foundations, may want to think that – and this is casting no shade on Paul Mullin – they maybe want to look at someone more established from a Championship point of view, or someone dropping down from the Premier League.

"Undoubtedly, the story that's been created around them will make them a very, very attractive proposition for many players."

Rodgers personally driving Celtic move to sign "crazy" Kyogo replacement

Following the departure of Kyogo Furuhashi in the January transfer window, Brendan Rodgers is now reportedly driving Celtic’s summer move to sign a replacement for the forward in the summer.

Celtic transfer news

The Bhoys may have been forced to bid farewell to Kyogo last month, but they certainly earned a reward for their sacrifice – welcoming star forward Jota back to the club less than two years after he swapped Scotland for the Saudi Pro League. With plenty of making up to do, it’s fair to say that he got off to the perfect start by scoring on his second debut in a recent 3-1 victory over Motherwell.

Those at Celtic Park may not stop there with attacking improvements though, as they look to replace the goals of Kyogo when the summer transfer window arrives.

Following a relatively quiet transfer window which saw just Jota and Jeffrey Schlupp arrive on loan from Crystal Palace, the Scottish giants may yet aim to steal the headlines ahead of the next campaign.

Jeffrey Schlupp

According to Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider, Rodgers is now personally driving Celtic’s move to sign Mathias Kvistgaarden in the summer transfer window having been left unhappy by the club’s failure to replace Kyogo in January.

A long-term target, Celtic could finally get their man when the summer arrives in what would end their search for his signature at last. The 22-year-old has certainly got the credentials to replace Kyogo, with an impressive goalscoring record speaking for itself.

Seemingly destined for Scotland following such continuous links, Kvistgaarden could now take that record to a bigger stage and one he could share with Jota to form quite the partnership.

"Crazy" Kvistgaarden can replace Kyogo

Whilst replacing Kyogo will be no easy task, 10 goals in 15 games so far this season suggests that Kvistgaarden is the man that Celtic should be chasing to do exactly that this summer. With such a record, the young Dane has found himself at the centre of praise from football talent scout Jacek Kulig, who described his form as “crazy” last season.

Of course, as already mentioned that “crazy form” has only continued in the current campaign and doesn’t look destined to come to an end anytime soon – whether that be at Brondby or, indeed, Celtic next season.

Given that Kyogo is already 30 years old – eight years the senior of Kvistgaarden – welcoming a younger replacement is far from a bad idea, either. In the space of two moves, Celtic could have both Jota and a rising star in the Danish forward to spearhead Rodgers towards another Scottish Premiership title next season.

Acredito no Rafael e no que ele me disse.

Newcastle keen on signing "elegant" Eric García; deal possible in January

Newcastle United are keen on signing an “elegant” young defender, and a deal is possible this January, according to a recent report.

Newcastle targeting new centre-back

Newcastle are planning on signing a new centre-back in the January transfer window, with Eddie Howe keen to strengthen his squad heading into the second half of the Premier League season. As such, the Magpies have started to weigh up different options in defence, and their top target is believed to be Abdukodir Khusanov of Lens, who has caught the eye due to his impressive performances in Ligue 1 this term.

Paris St Germain's Ousmane Dembele in action with RC Lens' AbduqodirKhusanov

Such is Newcastle’s interest in the youngster, they are said to have come forward to orchestrate a deal, which could amount to a fee of around £25m. Should Howe miss out on Khusanov, the manager could make a move for Club Brugge’s Joel Ordonez, having previously sent scouts to run the rule over the 20-year-old earlier this season.

Although Newcastle seemingly have their sights firmly set on Khusanov and Ordonez, a new target is now entering the frame, with Spanish sources reporting that Barcelona’s Eric Garcia is now of interest. The La Liga side are happy to let Garcia leave in January, and they would be looking to receive a fee of around €25m (£21m) for his services.

The Magpies are not the only Premier League side keen on the Spaniard, however, with Chelsea also interested, and there is a feeling he could adapt to life in England quickly, having played for Manchester City in the past.

Newcastle are said to be looking for a signing to help them compete at the highest level in Europe, and the 23-year-old could fit the bill, given his experience playing for some of the continent’s top clubs.

Talks are believed to be ongoing.

1 ByHenry Jackson Dec 21, 2024 Garcia struggling for game time

The Barcelona-born defender is struggling to get consistent minutes in the team this season, often being limited to cameo appearances off the bench, but there are signs he could be a solid addition for Howe this winter. Given that the former Manchester City man already has experience in the Premier League, he could have the edge on the likes of Khusanov and Ordonez, who are both yet to test the English game and less experienced in high level football generally.

Furthermore, the Spaniard impresses on some key defensive metrics, ranking in the 86th percentile for tackles completed per 90 over the past year, when compared to his positional peers. Garcia has also been lauded by football talent scout Jacek Kulig in the past.

£21m is a fair price to pay for a player of Garcia’s ability, so it is exciting news that Newcastle are now in the race for his signature.

Emery plots role change for £100k-per-week Aston Villa star who could leave

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery is plotting to use one of his players on a more regular basis from now until the end of this season, but that same man could still be on the way out next year.

Aston Villa slump in form but Unai Emery remains calm

Losses to Club Brugge and Liverpool followed soon after, rounding off a nightmare few weeks for Villa, who were happy to see the international break come around.

Oliver Glasner is a man under pressure at Palace, so the Eagles won’t be easy customers as they look to resurrect their own season.

“We have 38 matches in the Premier League,” said Emery on Villa’s form lately.

“Sometimes we can have good results, sometimes not, but we have to accept it. This is the reason we try to keep calm, try to rest the players after their matches with the national team. We are focusing on the match because it’s a very, very important three points.

“We will try to dominate and impose our game plan with our tactical idea and the duels against the players they have. The Premier League is very difficult and we can remind ourselves of the matches we played last year against teams more or less in the bottom of the table, like when we drew against Sheffield [United] in the last minute and came back against Burnley in the last minute. We know how to feel comfortable and strong, playing with our idea and imposing and dominating the match.”

Ahead of their return to action, there are reports casting doubt on the long-term future of £100,000-per-week defender Diego Carlos.

Emery plotting role change for Diego Carlos who could leave Aston Villa

There are suggestions that Emery is open to selling Carlos, with Football Insider and journalist Pete O’Rourke providing a further update on the situation.

He writes that Emery could consider using Carlos in his Villa eleven more often, but it is still believed that the Brazilian may still be axed in January for a suitable fee, rather than let him leave when his contract expires in 2026.

Realistically, NWSE and Monchi have just two more transfer windows to sell the 31-year-old for a suitable fee, so this is the most likely scenario as things stand, with Villa weighing up whether to let him leave in the winter or at the end of this season.

Emery has been boosted by the return of Tyrone Mings, but Villa’s presence in the Champions League and effort to seize back Premier League form means that Carlos should arguably stay, as injuries could ravage the squad at any given time.
