Contact made: West Ham now move to sign "huge player" alongside Max Kilman

After making an offer to sign Max Kilman from Wolverhampton Wanderers, West Ham United have now reportedly enquired about a potential deal to sign another Premier League star for Julen Lopetegui.

West Ham transfer news

Into a new chapter under Lopetegui, West Ham have already welcomed their first signing of the summer, having announced the arrival of young Brazilian winger Luis Guilherme earlier this month. The 18-year-old completed a deal worth a reported £26m to become the Hammers' first signing under Lopetegui this summer.

After putting pen to paper on the deal, Guilherme told the club's official website: “I’m very happy to be signing with West Ham United, a Club that trusted in my work. I also want to thank everyone at West Ham, particularly Tim and his team who came to Brazil, and not only talked with me, but also with my family.

“They presented the project, and both my family and I liked it. So, I'm very happy to be signing with this Club and hope to contribute as much as possible. If things go well, we have a beautiful journey ahead."

West Ham's attention has since turned elsewhere. Wasting no time resting on their laurels, the Hammers have reportedly made contact to sign Kilman from Wolves this summer and have had a bid turned down, whilst also shifting their focus elsewhere in the Premier League.

Alongside Kilman, West Ham have made contact about signing Callum Wilson from Newcastle United, according to Lee Ryder. The Magpies reportedly value their striker at £18m as they look to cash in before his contract comes to an end next summer. Wilson, of course, knows West Ham forward Michail Antonio well, given that the duo host The Footballer's Football Podcast together, and could now link up with his co-host for the first time on the pitch.

"Huge" Wilson can replace Antonio

Whilst they're good friends off the pitch, Wilson and Antonio's relationship could be in for an awkward test if the Newcastle man completes a move to the London Stadium to potentially take the latter's place in Lopetegui's side this summer.

With Wilson's role left in doubt at Newcastle following their links with signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin, his move will likely centre around game-time no matter who he has to leapfrog to get it, including Antonio.

Remaining clinical even as he has struggled for fitness over the years, it's no surprise that Eddie Howe has been full of praise for Wilson, previously hailing him as a "huge player" for Newcastle: "He has to lead the press and the one we bounce off initially. He kept going right until the end and his goalscoring record is excellent. I'm delighted for him, he's a huge player for us and a big presence in the dressing room."

Liverpool put plan together to sign "clever" £50m+ star in transfer update

All eyes are on the future at Liverpool, with Arne Slot on his way as Jurgen Klopp ends a legendary nine-year tenure at Anfield. And as one chapter ends, Michael Edwards is seemingly ensuring that the next era is equally as successful, if not more, by instantly turning towards the transfer market.

Liverpool transfer news

For a brief moment, it looked as though it would be Ruben Amorim to replace Klopp at Liverpool, but the plan quickly changed as it is Slot who is almost certain to take over. The Feyenoord boss has been fairly open about his next move, too.

That said, Edwards can now shift his focus towards reinforcements to get the Slot era started with a bang, which has seen the likes of Crysencio Summerville linked with a move to Anfield. The Leeds United star has enjoyed an excellent campaign in the Championship and has found himself on Liverpool's radar as a result. And he's not the only one, as the Reds have now made their intentions clear on a player they have been watching for some months.

According to Bild (via TEAMtalk), Liverpool have put a plan together to sign Willian Pacho, before loaning him back to Eintracht Frankfurt this summer. A player the Bundesliga club value at a reported €60m (£51.5m), the Reds would have to splash out to secure a deal, which would see the central defender feature for the first time in the 2025/26 season.

Interestingly, that deal would also see Pacho arrive at the same time that Virgil van Dijk's current Liverpool deal comes to an end. By that stage, the Frankfurt man could be a perfectly timed, ready-made Van Dijk replacement to hand the Reds a major boost in years to come.

"Clever" Pacho has the potential to replace Van Dijk

Replacing Klopp this summer is difficult enough, but Liverpool had better get used to it, with both Mohamed Salah and Van Dijk nearing the end of their current deals. Whilst fresh terms could be agreed, both players are past 30 years old and will gradually near the end of their illustrious careers, meaning that those at Anfield would be wise to plan ahead.

Virgil van Dijk for Liverpool

Pacho, still just 22, has plenty of potential, and by the time 2025 arrives, should be primed and ready to help fill any void left behind by Liverpool's current captain.

The Colombian's rise has resulted in high praise in the Bundesliga, including from Frankfurt sporting director Markus Krösche, who said via the league's official website: "Willian is a very clever player, who listens well and is quick to implement what's asked of him. His speed and strength in the tackle are what make him stand out."

Now, it is Liverpool looking to benefit from the defender's intelligence, albeit in the summer of 2025, rather than the immediate future.

Leeds eyeing dream Cooper upgrade in 6ft 3 titan who’s "one of the best"

Leeds United will be aiming to get rid of some deadwood at Elland Road in the summer, especially if Daniel Farke's men secure promotion up to the Premier League.

Liam Cooper's forlorn expression at the final whistle of the Whites' emphatic second-leg victory against Southampton suggests that the decorated Whites servant will be a likely casualty pushed out of the door in the summer, the German boss giving the 32-year-old a run-out late on in the 4-0 win to allow him to lap up the appreciation of the Leeds masses come full-time.

Liam Cooper

There will be upgrades already in the mind for the promotion hopefuls to fill the gap of the long-standing member of the Leeds squad exiting, with Joe Rodon an obvious permanent buy the West Yorkshire outfit will be looking to get over the line.

Their success rate with targets could well depend on whether they return to the Premier League or stay put in the Championship, however, with a swoop also being lined up for this exciting centre-back according to reports.

Leeds looking at Gent defender

As per Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, Leeds are eyeing up a potential swoop for Gent centre-back Jordan Torunarigha when their rollercoaster season is over, with interest also coming in the form of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.

The Nigeria international would cost Farke's Whites in the region of £2.5m to acquire his services from his current Belgian employers, as per Plettenberg, a deal that would, for instance, eclipse the £1.3m spent on current talisman, Crysencio Summerville.

Formerly on the books at Hertha Berlin, Leeds will have to sell the club to Torunarigha so he doesn't just opt to return back to these comforts in the Bundesliga, where he picked up six goals and five assists from 81 games.

The forward-thinking defender could well suit Leeds' style of play, seen in Rodon gradually playing out from the back this season, having amassed an impressive four goals and five assists with Gent over 102 games by being a measured operator on the ball.

It could now be a case of out with the old and in with the new regarding the ex-Hertha Berlin man, with Cooper struggling at points this season when called into action and he could really hinder Leeds back up in the Premier League if kept around.

How Torunarigha compares to Cooper

Described as being "one of the best" defenders in the game by ex-Gent teammate Gift Orban back in September, who further elaborated that the 26-year-old defender is "very good" on the ball alongside his combative duties at the back, Cooper would be bumped down the Whites pecking order even more with Torunarigha's arrival onto the scene.

Comparing the two defenders on FBref, the £2.5m-rated titan would be a smart acquisition to make with his progressive passes statistic over the last year – coming in at five per 90 – even bettering Rodon's 4.35 in contrast despite the wantaway Tottenham Hotspur defender being touted for a move in and around the £10-15m ballpark.

Bettering Cooper as well in many key aspects in the table above, surprisingly trumping the 32-year-old in the tackles department to back up Orban's claims of the Gent defender being a well-rounded player, the 6 foot 3 Torunarigha could also be an ideal player to bring in if Leeds cannot strike a permanent deal with Rodon.

It will be an exit tinged with a lot of sadness when Leeds do move on Cooper, but with the likes of Torunarigha available on the cheap, any disappointment about the ageing defender's exit would soon be quelled.

Before any concrete talks take place, however, the Whites – led by 20-goal hero, Summerville – will aim to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking against Southampton to control what deals can and cannot happen.

McAvennie warns Celtic to “be aware” of rumours he’s hearing from Rangers

Ex-Celtic striker Frank McAvennie has warned his former club to "be aware" of a potential transfer development happening at Rangers this summer.

Rangers eyeing summer signings

The Gers may be focusing on winning the Scottish Premiership title this season, but work will also be going on behind the scenes to complete some important summer transfer business.

Abdallah Sima has been an excellent loan signing from Brighton in 2023/24 to date, even though injuries have disrupted his campaign, with ten league goals coming his way to date. The Seagulls are happy to offload him at the end of the season, and it could be that Rangers strike a permanent deal for him.

Fabio Silva

Fabio Silva finds himself in a similar position, too, admittedly not impressing as much as Sima this season, but potentially leaving Wolves for good this summer, at which point the Gers could look to retain his services albeit for a larger fee.

Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland is seen as another top option to bolster Philippe Clement's attack, possibly even standing out as a superior player to both Sima and Silva. He leads the Scottish scoring charts so far in 2023/24, finding the net 20 times in the league.

McAvennie shares Shankland warning to Celtic

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie admitted that Shankland joining Rangers could be a great piece of business, and one that he could see happening.

"I don’t understand why the Shankland rumours are all over the place if there’s nothing in it. I think he would do well at Rangers. He hasn’t got the pace for England. Unfortunately for him, the Premier League is all about pace. But Shankland is a very intelligent player, he’s great with his feet. Has he got the pace to play in England? No.

"He’ll score goals in Scotland. I think it’ll be an interesting one if he goes to Ibrox – it’s a real step in the right direction and something Celtic will have to be aware of."

Regardless of what Rangers are planning with Sima and Silva this summer – Champions League qualification may need to achieved in order for them to afford at least one of them – Shankland should be considered a brilliant choice to come in and make Rangers' attacking even more fearsome.

The 28-year-old is now an experienced player who knows the Scottish Premiership inside out, and his performances this season suggest that he is a player who is coming right into his prime.

From a Celtic perspective, seeing the Gers snap up Shankland would be a big concern, at a time when Clement's men have not only narrowed the gap hugely on their rivals, but are also threatening to pip them to title glory.

David de Gea needs to decide what's more important: Getting his football career back on track or merely earning massive money?

The Spaniard has been out of the game for more than a year, but seems to think he should still be able to demand megabucks

David de Gea has given no interviews since leaving Manchester United, even though he must have plenty to say. His media blackout is reportedly out of respect for the club where he spent 12 years, though the goalkeeper has continued to use social media during his hiatus from the game, and he has been indulging his habit of making cryptic posts.

The Spaniard dropped a yawning emoji last year when rumours about him leaving United began to circle. A couple of days before he confirmed his departure from the Red Devils, he had posted a juggling emoji, hinting he was weighing up his options.

He dropped his latest teasing message earlier this month, posting an hour glass emoji. Users instantly presumed this was a sign he was about to announce his next move. And sure enough, a week later reports emerged that he was in discussions with Genoa.

The Serie A club’s fans quickly flocked to his Instagram post and urged him to complete a move to their club. But just a day later, it emerged that Genoa were looking at alternative targets as De Gea’s wage demands were too high. The episode begged the obvious question: does De Gea really want to return to football, or is he only interested in money?

  • Getty Images

    Ugly exit

De Gea has lived a curious life since his unsavoury departure from United last July. The Spaniard thought he would be staying with the club despite coming to the end of his contract and was expecting to sign an extension.

However, that offer was withdrawn by the Red Devils at the last minute and replaced by an alternative, lower offer, at the same time that United were trying to sign Andre Onana.

It was a cruel way to treat a loyal club servant like De Gea and, faced with the prospect of getting a worse deal to be a back-up goalkeeper, no one could blame the Spaniard for saying thanks but no thanks.

It was with some sadness that he called an end to his long spell at Old Trafford, where had become the club’s longest-serving goalkeeper and the man to have kept the most clean sheets in their history.

  • Taking time out

It has been hard to make sense of what has happened since. De Gea naturally received offers to continue his career immediately after leaving United, but for some reason he preferred to take a breather from the game, deciding that none of the opportunities on the table tickled his fancy.

The transfer window thus closed and he was left without a club. According to , he was so upset with how he had been treated by United manager Erik ten Hag and then-sporting director John Murtough that he considered retiring from football altogether.

No announcement came, though, and the only indication of his activities was his Instagram account, where he posted videos of him doing individual training and a picture of a reunion with Bruno Fernandes while visiting Manchester.

That led to some excitement among United fans about the prospect of De Gea making a shock return to the club, although such a move was never on the cards. It was later established that he had been spending time back in England primarily for tax reasons.

  • Getty

    Feeling picky

When he was not watching United's women's team or playing padel, De Gea kept himself busy running his E-sports team, Rebel Gaming, and spending time with his wife and daughter back in Spain. As a United player, De Gea had gotten used to making frequent trips back to see his wife, who continued to live in Spain as he had famously said she did not like Manchester.

Who could blame him for enjoying some family time and being away from the goldfish bowl existence of being a Manchester United player? However, according to , about five months into his break, De Gea ‘realised he missed football and started working towards a return’.

The imminent arrival of the January transfer window led to inevitable speculation that he would be looking for another club, and reports emerged that there was interest in him from a number of Saudi Pro League clubs, including Steven Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq.

At the time, GOAL consulted a source who knows De Gea and was told the Spaniard was being “picky” about his next club. So it proved. The transfer window came and went and De Gea was still without a club.

The Spaniard returned to England in the new year and posted more videos of him training, this time at the home of National League side Altrincham, based near where De Gea used to live.

    Stability or money?

De Gea was believed to have trained there regularly, although one reporter who visited the stadium to try and find out more information was given short shrift by a security guard.

The De Gea mystery continued, with the goalkeeper continuing to be silent about his future plans and little word coming in the media. The fact that the Spaniard has not worked with an agent since cutting ties with Jorge Mendes in 2019 has made it harder for him to find a new club, as his inner circle of trusted friends do not have the network of contacts that agents can count upon.

It has also meant there are fewer genuine stories about his negotiations with clubs. reported last week, just days before news of the interest from Genoa emerged, that De Gea’s priority was ‘a club and a city that guarantees stability for him and his family’, adding that he had received interest from Saudi Arabia, Italy and the United States.

That description was vague, to say the least, and it is tempting to conclude that the word stability could easily have been substituted for ‘well enumerated’.

MLS star Zimmerman is filling the captain’s armband, as one of three overage players in U23 ranks, and he has told of the goals being set in the U.S. camp: “We have our eyes on a gold medal. It’s a unique tournament since there are only 16 teams, so the fact that if you get out of your group, you’re in a quarter-final, and if you win that game, you’re playing for a medal even if you lose the semi-final. It just amps up so quickly and that’s really different from a lot of other major tournaments. Games are every three days and we’re going to have to rely on everyone with the reduced roster size to make it happen.”

Steidten personally senses opportunity for West Ham to sign free defender

West Ham United transfer chief Tim Steidten apparently senses an opportunity for the club to bring in a "magnificent" defender this summer.

Whether or not David Moyes will be around long enough to benefit from it, there is a real belief that West Ham are making transfer plans for later in the year.

ByEmilio Galantini Mar 12, 2024

There is a belief that Steidten and co are chasing a new forward for West Ham, having failed to sign one in the January window. Sporting Lisbon star Pedro Goncalves has been linked this week as one option, coming after his sensational season in the Primeira Liga.

Another area of concern for the Hammers has been in defence, with fan concerns surrounding centre-back Nayef Aguerd, who has been prone to the odd error.

West Ham defender Nayef Aguerd.

The Morocco international is also attracting interest from Saudi Arabia (Pete O'Rourke), and he could be the next high-profile West Ham player to leave as exit links surround midfield star Lucas Paqueta.

Sourcing a replacement for Aguerd could well be a top item on Steidten's agenda if he does leave West Ham this summer. Reports suggest West Ham are fans of Wolves defender Max Kilman as one option, and they were repeatedly linked with a move for the Englishman in the build up to January.

However, the likes of Kilman could command a hefty price tag, so it could be prudent for West Ham to look at potentially cheaper options. There are a fair few defenders who could be available for nothing by the time summer comes around, including the likes of Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly, who is rumoured to be attracting real interest.

Another potentially cheap option is Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo, as outlet GiveMeSport point out this week.

As per GMS, West Ham director Steidten personally senses an opportunity to sign Tosin, coming after they previously failed to lure him away from Craven Cottage.

"Adarabioyo is back on West Ham's radar ahead of the summer transfer window after his contractual situation at Fulham has resulted in there being plenty of intrigue," wrote GMS. "Steidten taking note of a potential opportunity to pounce for his services, according to GMS sources."

Tosin has been called "magnificent" by members of the press, with Man City boss Pep Guardiola calling him "fast" and "strong".

“He is fast, strong in the air, and has the quality to look forward behind the line for the next pass,” said Guardiola (via GOAL). “He definitely has a future in the first team.
