Vitinha: From failed Wolves loan to becoming the world's best midfielder at PSG

The Parisiens' forwards may have hogged the headlines during their treble win, but Luis Enrique believes the Portuguese is his most important player

Towards the tail end of Paris Saint-Germain's remarkable 2024-25 campaign, Ruud Gullit admitted that he was utterly enamoured with Luis Enrique's thrilling team. Just like everyone else, the Dutch legend had been captivated by the French club's wonderful wingers, but it was Vitinha's play-making in the middle of the park which really blew Gullit away.

"He wasn't even good enough to play for Wolves and now he's the best player at Paris Saint-Germain!" the former AC Milan and Netherlands attacker told reporters at the Laureus World Sports Awards.

Gullit wasn't exaggerating either – at least, not about Vitinha being PSG's best player. He is the man that makes the treble-winners tick. And, clearly, the talent had always been there, even during his unsuccessful loan spell at Molineux.

But how did Vitinha go from a Wolves reject to a PSG superstar in four years? GOAL charts the remarkable rise to prominence of one of the new members of our World-Class Club…

AFP'Not easy'

Despite Wolves' propensity for signing Portuguese players, due to the close ties between the club's owners, Fosun International, and super-agent Jorge Mendes, Vitinha's move to Molineux in September 2020 still came as something of a surprise.

The Porto academy graduate had only made his professional debut eight months previously and had yet to start a single league game at senior level. However, Porto's Financial Fair Play (FFP) problems necessitated a move, so one of their most promising youngsters was sent out on loan with a view to a permanent €20 million (£17m/$23m) transfer.

The presence of so many of his compatriots at Wolves undeniably helped Vitinha settle into his new surroundings – particularly as he arrived during the pandemic – but it wasn't all positive from a sporting perspective, as it meant having to compete with more established Portuguese players such as Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho for a place in Nuno Espirito Santo's starting line up.

"Everybody saw the ability was there," the former Wolves boss recently told reporters. "But you have to consider the impact of the physicality. We signed him when he was 20, and he was just getting used to the senior level, which was a big impact. And I have to be honest with you: we had Joao Moutinho [in Vitinha's position] and he was another amazing player.

"So, sometimes young players who join can have the talent, but it is the coach who makes the decisions. At that time, the midfield was Moutinho and Ruben Neves, so it was not easy for Vitinha. But he played a lot of games, went back to Porto and his level started rising and rising."

AdvertisementGetty Images Sport'Great year of learning'

Wolves may have ended up regretting their decision not to take up their option to buy Vitinha, but he looks back on his season-long stay at Molineux as a pivotal period in his development.

The combative but cultured playmaker realised quite quickly that his style of play wasn't a good fit for Nuno's counter-attacking game, but he still ended up featuring 19 times in the Premier League, and starting seven times in total in all competitions.

"It didn't go as I liked nor wanted it to," Vitinha admitted to . "But I tried, I did my best. It was a great year of learning."

The rejection also spurred him on, making the youngster even more determined to prove himself at the highest level – and without changing his progressive approach to the game.

AFPBelieving in himself

Indeed, former Wolves defender Fernando Marcal would later reveal in an interview with that Vitinha was not in the least bit discouraged by his failure to secure a permanent transfer.

“The coach was hard on him," the Brazilian revealed. "Despite doing amazing things in training, he couldn't convince him. Nuno wanted Vitinha to keep it simple, to release the ball more quickly. He tried to follow instructions but he didn’t want to lose his identity. So, I asked him how he thought the following season would go for him and he replied: 'I'm going back to Porto, I'm going to smash it there and the season after I'll be playing for one of the eight best teams in Europe.'

"I thought to myself, 'Wow, this guy can't get a game at Wolves and he thinks he's gonna sign for Man City or a club like that? He's a bit crazy!' But no, he certainly wasn't."

AFPDoing a lot of 'chores' for Mbappe & Co.

As Marcal pointed out, Vitinha's bold prediction proved prophetic, because after a stellar season at the Dragao, featuring 47 appearances while securing a domestic double, the midfielder was snapped up by PSG for €41.5m (£36m/$49m) in the summer of 2022.

The Parc des Princes dressing room was like a dream world for Vitinha; being surrounded by Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe was a truly surreal experience. It was also challenging, though. The forwards' refusal to do any defensive work meant that Vitinha was left with an awful lot of "chores", as he put it – and securing their respect wasn't easy either.

In just his second Ligue 1 outing, Vitinha decided against playing a pass to Mbappe and opted instead to pick out Messi instead, which resulted in the visibly frustrated Frenchman petulantly turning his back on the play. It was a moment that rather summed up the pervading sense of entitlement at Parc des Princes at the time – and helps explain why Vitinha and others were so happy with PSG subsequently shifting their focus from signing superstars to recruiting young players of enormous potential.

"The way that they want to build the team now, the long-term vision, it's the best way," Vitinha enthused last season.

Paul van Meekeren spearheads rout of Bangladesh

Scott Edwards once more dragged his team from the abyss, but it was the bowlers who led the victory charge as the Netherlands held firm in their defence of a middling total of 229 to record an emphatic 87-run win over Bangladesh. The result sees Bangladesh all but eliminated from the semi-final contention, while the Dutch have yet another famous victory to add to their collection – one that, aside from its impact on this tournament, in the grand scheme of cricket as a sport in the Netherlands will be yet another rung on an ever more impressive ladder of growth. The victory was arguably made sweeter by virtue of it coming in Kolkata, where Bangladesh had support as close to home backing as they are likely to get this World Cup, with the short flight in from Dhaka offering many fans easy access. But in the end, it would be a journey ending in frustration – many were seen leaving the stadium early – as a well-drilled Dutch outfit trumped their much more experienced counterparts in nearly all facets of the game.Related

  • BCB chief asks players to be 'courageous' in aftermath of Netherlands loss

This was primarily a victory built on the now customary rearguard heroics of captain Edwards – his entire clan in attendance at the stadium to cheer him on – as he stitched together his second fifty of the tournament, an 89-ball 68.What will particularly hurt Bangladesh is that they could have seen the back of him before he even got going – twice dropped on zero – but that in a microcosm was the difference between the two sides. While both teams struggled with the bat, the Dutch persevered to get to a fighting total, and while both sets of bowlers kept things tight to create chances through pressure, it was the Dutch who capitalised on them with ferocity; Bangladesh, on the other hand, were left to rue their missed opportunities.Such fortune though would be for nought without proper backing and, like they had done so impressively against South Africa, the bowlers and fielders once more ensured that their skipper’s efforts did not go in vain.Scott Edwards brought up his second fifty in this World Cup•AFP/Getty Images

Paul van Meekeren was excellent picking up figures of 4 for 23, including that of Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim; Bas de Leede, fresh off his World Cup record hounding at the hands of Australia, took out the only two Bangladesh batters who threatened the Dutch total – Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Mahmudullah, for 35 and 20, respectively; and then there was the ever reliable Aryan Dutt, who despite picking up just one wicket was wily as ever, starting off the Dutch defence by dismissing Litton Das, reeling of two consecutive maidens inside the first powerplay, and generally affording the batters with rarely a moment’s rest with his guile and variation. In the face of this Dutch exuberance, Bangladesh floundered in their chase, unable to match their opponents’ energy. They lost wickets at regular intervals, unable to string together partnerships of any reasonable length – 38 was their highest – as a middling chase fast became a daunting and, eventually, impossible one. That hardly seemed the case midway through the Dutch innings, though, when having won the toss and elected to bat, they suffered yet another top-order collapse. Only a late surge at the death where they scored 74 in the last ten overs, including 36 in the final three, got them to their eventually winning total. That Bangladesh were able to keep them to 229 even after that was a testament to the work put in by their bowlers. The early damage had been caused by Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam, who picked up openers Vikramjit Singh and Max O’Dowd inside the first three overs to leave the Dutch reeling at 4 for 2.While there was a brief counter courtesy Wesley Barresi, his run-a-ball 41 was the only instance of a Netherlands batter showing any degree of dominance over a disciplined Bangladeshi attack. In fact, Netherlands would have to wait until the penultimate over of the innings to register their first six.Mustafizur Rahman, Shakib Al Hasan and Co had reduced Netherlands to 194 for 8 at one stage•Associated Press

But another pair of wickets once more set Netherlands back as the two set batters, Barresi and Colin Ackermann, fell in quick succession to Mustafizur Rahman and Shakib, respectively. It was at that point the spinners began their slow strangle, as none of Shakib, Mehidy or Mahedi Hasan conceded more than four an over across the middle overs. Indeed, it was only in the final over of the innings that Netherlands showed any sort of aggression against spin, taking Mahedi for 17.And so it was that Edwards was once more tasked to patch his side up, first with de Leede and then Sybrand Engelbrecht. With de Leede, he scrounged 44 off 74, and with Engelbrecht, a slightly quicker 78 off 105.Throughout those stands there was hardly a highlight that could be extracted or stroke played in anger, with the intent simply to knock it around and bat as deep as possible. An understandable endeavour considering Edwards had entered the fray with his side on a perilous 63 for 3, which soon became 63 for 4.But when he departed 30 overs later, he had dragged them to a slightly more respectable 185 for 6, before the late hitting took them to a fighting total. At the time that seemed below par, especially with many expecting the surface to favour the batters. However, with the ball starting to stick in the pitch and take some turn, it was Netherlands who adapted better and showed the wherewithal to come through victorious in the end.

"Like a young Rio Ferdinand" – Leeds plot swoop to sign "exciting" defender

In what could see them finally sign a target they set their sights on back in January, Leeds United are now reportedly plotting a summer move to sign a defender who’s been compared to Rio Ferdinand.

Leeds set sights on January target again

As the international break ends, Leeds are set to return to action against Swansea City on Saturday afternoon knowing full well that they cannot afford any more slips. With just eight games left to play in the Championship, the Whites sit top of the league on goal difference and only two points above third-place Burnley. To put it simply, the race for automatic promotion remains on a knife-edge.

Promotion to the Premier League is almost certain to provide those at Elland Road with a major boost on the transfer front this summer too, with names such as Matt Targett already threatening to steal the headlines.

Whether they secure their place in the top flight or suffer the ultimate promotion heartbreak, however, the 49ers look set to target one particular reinforcement at Elland Road this summer.

According to GiveMeSport, Leeds are now plotting a summer move to sign Andrew Omobamidele from Nottingham Forest after missing out on his signature during the January transfer window.

£20m star really failed at Leeds, now he's outperforming Gray after leaving

Reportedly available for less than £10m if Strasbourg decide not to trigger their option to make his loan move permanent in the coming months, Omobamidele could complete a permanent exit from Nottingham Forest and join up with Daniel Farke. The Leeds boss remains a fan of the defender, who he brought through the Norwich City academy in 2021.

"Exciting" Omobamidele could find form at Leeds

Whilst his move to Nottingham Forest hasn’t quite worked out, there’s still every chance that Omobamidele finds his form elsewhere and perhaps even at Elland Road next season. The 22-year-old is yet to even reach his peak, but has already earned impressive praise from the likes of Vinny Perth.

The former Dundalk manager went as far as comparing Omobamidele with Premier League legend Ferdinand a few years ago, telling reporters: “I watched him play for the Ireland under-21s against Wales – he was ok. But I watched him against Preston in a 1-1 draw, and he subsequently stayed in the team. He has been outstanding – a really, really exciting footballer.

“They want to play out from the back, he is so comfortable on the ball. I hate giving players tags, but he looks like a young Rio Ferdinand. He has got bits to learn, in that he could develop his upper body strength but he is 18, playing against men.”

With that said, whether or not they earn a Premier League place, Leeds should push to reunite Farke with his former academy graduate and hand the German a key defensive reinforcement this summer.

Man Utd's 17-year-old "Foden regen" could be even better than Obi & Heaven

Chido Obi has made a real impression for Manchester United so far this season. After scoring consistently in the youth team, the youngster has been rewarded with first-team experience by manager Ruben Amoirm, where he has impressed.

He has played four times so far, featuring for 78 minutes, including a 52-minute cameo against Fulham in the FA Cup. During the clash against the Cottagers, United legend Wayne Rooney said he has “been really impressed” with how Obi played.

For Arsenal fans, it must sting to see Obi performing so well in United’s first team. Most recently, the Gunners lost talented centre-back Ayden Heaven to Old Trafford, too, although he has just picked up an injury after a string of good performances.

The latest on Ayden Heaven’s injury

What a shame it was for Heaven that he picked up an injury. He had to be stretchered off with a leg issue around 50 minutes into United’s most recent game against Leicester City, after yet another fantastic start to the game.

At this stage, there is no diagnosis, nor is there a return time specified for the youngster.

However, he took to Instagram to explain he is “doing well and recovering fast”, and Manchester Evening News journalist Steven Railston stated United are ‘continuing to assess’ his issue.

It certainly comes at a bad time for the defender, who has now played four times for the Red Devils.

He impressed on his debut against Fulham in extra-time, before making a superb start to life in the Premier League against the Gunners. His first start came against Real Sociedad in the Europa League, and he also played from the off against the Foxes.

Talents like Heaven and Obi do not come around often, but United have a habit of making them prominent players in the first team.

Incredibly, the Red Devils may have an even more talented youngster in the academy, who is just waiting to break into the senior set-up under Amorim.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

Man United's next-best talent after Heaven & Obi

Over the years, United have boasted several exciting academy talents in their first team. Most recently, of course, the likes of Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo have become prominent senior stars.

When it comes to Carrington graduates, next up for the Red Devils could be attacker Shea Lacey. Although he has struggled with injury at times over the past few seasons, he is a talented player, described as “unstoppable” by United academy-dedicated page Academy Scoop.

The 17-year-old, who was born in Liverpool, has sadly managed just eight appearances this season, after suffering from injury for much of the campaign. In that time, he has grabbed one assist, coming against FK Zalgiris in the UEFA Youth League.

That has not been Lacey’s only success in that competition. The teenager also grabbed an assist against Galatasaray last season. He impressed in both of those games and, as per Sofascore, created two chances against the Lithuanian side and one against the Turkish giants.

As for his exploits in domestic football for United’s U18s, the winger has once again impressed. He has five goals and five assists in 27 games in the U18 Premier League, including two goals and one assist in a 5-2 win over Newcastle United last term.

There is no doubting Lacey’s talent. The England U17 international is like a magnet with the ball at his feet, excelling at close control, and is someone who can create chances out of nowhere, an excellent trait for all attackers. So exciting is his potential that many have pointed out his similarities to PFA Premier League Player of the Year for 2023/24, Phil Foden.

If he can put his injury issues behind him, Lacey is more than talented enough to break through into United’s first team. He could become an important player for Amorim in the years to come and help form part of a dynasty alongside the likes of Obi and Heaven.

Farke must now axe Aaronson to unleash "electric" Leeds ace instead

Leeds United face Millwall at Elland Road tonight looking to return to winning ways after falling to a first Championship defeat since November against Portsmouth on Sunday.

Daniel Farke will want to see a reaction from his side as they look to further bolster their push for promotion as the season gradually approaches its conclusion.

The Whites have already received a boost ahead of the clash with Alex Neil’s side, with promotion rivals Sheffield United and Burnley both dropping points at home against Bristol City and West Brom last night.

However, if Farke’s side are to avoid following suit, multiple changes may need to be made from the side that lost on the South Coast at the weekend, handing them the best chance of extending their lead at the summit.

One player in particular needs to be dropped from the side, with his performance against Pompey below the levels expected of a player pushing for a return to the Premier League.

Why Aaronson needs to be dropped against Millwall

Attacking midfielder Brenden Aaronson returned to Leeds in the summer after spending last season on loan at Union Berlin following relegation from England’s top flight.

The American international has posted eight goals and two assists in his 36 league appearances to date, only managing one of those contributions since the turn of the year.

His showing against Portsmouth on Sunday afternoon was an unacceptable one, failing to deliver in the final third and unable to prevent the side from falling to defeat.

The 24-year-old only managed 21 touches, completing just 11 passes, but also lost 100% of the duels that he entered – highlighting how disappointing in and out of possession.

After such a disappointing showing, Farke must take action and drop him from the side, needing to hand one player a needed start to try and claim an important victory.

The player who Farke needs to start against Millwall

Since the start of the campaign, the Whites have often had a very settled side with very few changes made – mainly only occurring due to injuries or suspension.

Despite Aaronson’s poor form, he’s started every single game since the end of August, with the manager needing to take him out of the firing line and hand a start to Largie Ramazani this evening.

The Belgian joined in an £11m deal from Almeria in the summer but has struggled with injuries, returning to first team action over the last couple of weeks.

The 24-year-old has found starts hard to come by after his big-money transfer, appearing from the off just seven times in 2024/25, but still managing to register four goals and two assists in the process.

Ramazani, who’s previously been labelled “electric” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, came off the bench against Pompey at the weekend, looking to make an impact after falling behind.

During his 22 minutes on the pitch, he registered 11 touches and completed six passes whilst also completing 100% of his crosses – producing an encouraging showing in such a short period.

While he’s primarily a winger, Farke could look to shift him centrally or even opt for Daniel James or Manor Solomon to move inside and allow for Ramazani to enter the attack at Aaronson’s expense.

Sunday’s defeat was a disappointing one for the club, especially after their recent form, which has seen their phenomenal unbeaten run lead them to the top of the table.

Given the dropped points from their rivals last night, it’s pivotal that Farke’s side return to winning ways, putting them one step closer to ending their two-year absence from the top flight.

Jandrei falhou no lance.

TRICOLOR SENTE O EMPATE E PERDE INTENSIDADE
