O confronto
O técnico Matheus Costa avançou a marcação e encurralou o Bugre no campo defensivo.

Australia fast bowler Mitchell Johnson has been rested from the Twenty20 series in South Africa and will return home before joining the squad in Bangladesh for the World Twenty20. Allrounder Moises Henriques will remain in South Africa as his replacement.”Mitch has had a very long summer and we think he will benefit from returning home for a few days of rest with his family where he can freshen up,” Australia’s coach Darren Lehmann said. “He will link back up with the squad in Bangladesh ahead the ICC World Twenty20.”Johnson was the highest wicket-taker in the Test series, which Australia won 2-1, claiming 22 wickets at 17.36 apiece. He also bowled the most overs – 126.1 – across three innings.Australia’s first T20 against South Africa is on March 9 and their first game of the World Twenty20 is against Pakistan on March 23.

Both Sri Lanka and West Indies have strong spin attacks, but West Indies have been unstoppable with the bat in the last five overs

Darren Sammy has scored 99 runs from 39 balls while batting in the last five overs•AFP
Sri Lanka and West Indies won three matches and lost one each in the group stages of the World Twenty20, and their overall batting and bowling stats are fairly similar. West Indies have the marginally better batting numbers, with a slightly higher scoring rate and average, while Sri Lanka have a marginally better bowling average. Both teams have taken exactly 31 wickets, which shows there’s little to separate the two teams. Both teams have had one match in which they leaked more than 170 runs – West Indies conceded 178 against Australia (but still managed to win) while Sri Lanka went for 190 against England. Both have also had a couple of excellent bowling performances: Sri Lanka shot out Netherlands for 39 and New Zealand for 60, while West Indies bowled out Bangladesh for 98 and Pakistan for 82.In terms of scoring patterns, though, there is some difference. West Indies have relied heavily on boundaries: they’ve struck almost twice as many sixes as Sri Lanka, and have scored almost 66% of their runs in fours and sixes. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, have played about 15% fewer dot balls than West Indies.

West Indies have had Samuel Badree at the start of the innings, and Sunil Narine through the middle and end overs, while Sachitra Senanayake and Ajantha Mendis were Sri Lanka’s spin options through much of the tournament, before Rangana Herath made his tournament debut against New Zealand and completely blew them away with figures of 5 for 3.Overall, West Indies have been more reliant on their spinners: they’ve bowled more overs than the seamers, and have accounted for 19 of their 31 wickets. Badree is the third-highest wicket-taker of the tournament, while Narine’s economy rate of 4.50 is second only Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s, among bowlers who have bowled at least 10 overs in the tournament. And then there has been Krishmar Santokie, the unsung hero for West Indies: no one’s talked much about him, but he has taken six wickets at an average of 13.83 and an economy rate of 5.59. (Click here for West Indies’ batting and bowling averages in the tournament.)For Sri Lanka, Nuwan Kulasekara has been superb, taking six wickets at 11.67 and an economy rate of 5.83, but Lasith Malinga has had a relatively quiet tournament, taking three wickets in 12 overs. Both teams have taken 11 wickets in the first six overs – the most by any team in the tournament – though Sri Lanka have a slightly better economy rate. There’s little to choose between their stats in the middle overs too, but in the last five, West Indies have a better economy rate. Sri Lanka have conceded 9.55 per over in the last five, thanks to their games against England and South Africa, when they went for 48 off 26 balls and 45 off 30 in the last five overs.

Their run rate in the last five is 12.55, a period during which they’ve scored 247 runs in 118 balls. Darren Sammy alone has caused immeasurable damage to the opposition bowling figures during this period, scoring 99 off 39 balls during this period, at a staggering run rate of 15.23 per over. Dwayne Bravo hasn’t done badly either, scoring 54 from 24. Sri Lanka’s run rate of 9.83 in the last five isn’t too bad (141 runs from 86 balls), but this is clearly a period that has belonged to West Indies.Sri Lanka’s strength has been more in the middle overs, when they’ve scored at a brisk pace without losing too many wickets. Mahela Jayawardene has been at the forefront in this aspect, scoring 74 off 50 balls during this period (run rate 8.88) and getting out just once.

However, conditions in Mirpur have favoured spin more than in Chittagong, which should suit Sri Lanka as well: spinners have bowled twice as many overs in Mirpur compared to Chittagong in the main stage of the tournament, and achieved better economy rates. (Click here for the stats of spinners at the two venues, and here for the pace bowlers’ numbers.)The head-to-head historySri Lanka and West Indies have played five Twenty20 internationals so far, all of them in the World Twenty20. While Sri Lanka won the first four, West Indies beat them in the big game, the final of the 2012 edition, by 36 runs. Four of the five matches between them have been won by the team batting first. In matches between these two teams, Jayawardene has been the top batsman, scoring 202 runs at a strike rate of 133.77; Tillakaratne Dilshan isn’t far behind in terms of aggregate, scoring 187 at a strike rate touching 160. West Indies’ batsmen have been relatively quiet, with Chris Gayle scoring only 73 in four innings.Among the bowlers, Mendis has stunning stats: in 20 overs he has figures of 13 for 82, an average of 6.30 and an economy rate of 4.10. Malinga, though, has leaked almost 9.50 runs per over against West Indies. Narine has played only two games against Sri Lanka, but has been his usual self, taking 3 for 32 from 7.4 overs.

Kevin Pietersen is expected to recover from a finger injury and make his first appearance of the season against Sunrisers Hyderabad•Getty Images
Pietersen poised to make first appearance Delhi Daredevils are likely to receive a much-needed boost, as Kevin Pietersen, the team’s captain, is expected to recover from a finger injury and make his first appearance of the season against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Friday.”I’m going to hopefully be back in the next game after I train well for a week. I have trained a couple of days, but it hasn’t been an ideal start going into this tournament,” Pietersen told “I had good practice for a couple of weeks in London, but then hurt myself and have had three weeks off. I just need another good week of training and then I’ll be back.”With two heavy defeats at the hands of Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings, Daredevils currently languish near the bottom of the table with the worst net run-rate among the eight teams. To compound their woes, their seamer Nathan Coulter-Nile suffered a hamstring injury against Super Kings and according to the stand-in captain Dinesh Karthik, could be “out for some time”. Pietersen, however, remained optimistic of the team’s chances.”I want all the guys in the team to know that there is no pressure. I want all the players to relax and play to the best of their ability. Another important thing for me as a leader is that the guys train well. According to me, the training should be so thorough and intense that the game-day becomes easier.”Pujara wants to mould his style on Kallis Kings XI Punjab batsman Cheteshwar Pujara has accepted his limitations as a T20 batsman and wants to mould his style on Jacques Kallis, as a steady accumulator. The opening batsman, whose IPL experience was limited to only 24 matches over four seasons before the current edition began, says he is “getting better and better” in the T20 format.”I cannot be flamboyant like [Glenn] Maxwell or [David] Miller, but I can always be a Jacques Kallis who plays proper cricketing shots, but can still score runs at a good strike-rate,” Pujara told . “My way of hitting may be classical where you try and time the ball.”In Kings XI’s successful chase of 192 against Rajasthan Royals, Pujara batted through the innings to make 40 off 38 balls, while Maxwell and Miller batted at frenetic pace to achieve the target. Pujara made a relatively quicker 35 off 32 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Tuesday and the innings left him “satisfied”. When questioned about his strike rate, Pujara said the presence of big hitters in the team has allowed him to play within his limitations.”My role in the team is to stick at one end. I intend to rotate the strike and hit the boundaries as and when it is possible. I am opening the innings and I have to be ready to hit the ball from ball one or the very first over. The job becomes a bit difficult, but with time and few more matches, I will get better. I am getting better with each passing day.”Made too many mistakes against Maxwell – Moody Sunrisers Hyderabad coach Tom Moody has said his team paid the price for letting Kings XI Punjab’s Glenn Maxwell off the hook as many as three times during his imposing 95 off 43 balls in Sharjah on Tuesday. Maxwell had offered two chances at long-on early in his innings. When on 4, a mis-hit fell short and later in the over, on 11, David Warner spilled a sitter in the same position. When on 62, Maxwell was caught at deep midwicket, but unfortunately for the Sunrisers, the bowler Darren Sammy had overstepped the crease.”It is the nature of the game that we make mistakes at times and, unfortunately, we made three against the wrong batsman and ended up chasing 40 runs extra which in these conditions, is unrealistic,” Moody said. “When a wonderful striker like Maxwell, who is in incredible form, is dropped twice in one over and is caught off a no ball, he is going to hurt you.”Moody said Sammy’s no ball was unfortunate because the plan was to bowl a back of a length slower ball to tempt Maxwell to slog, with a fielder in the deep. Sunrisers slumped to their second defeat in as many games after they collapsed to 121 in pursuit of 194. Moody however backed the top order comprising Warner, Aaron Finch and Shikhar Dhawan to fire.”It is not the ideal situation to be two down. We would rather be two up, but we have a world-class top-order who have proven themselves over time. I am absolutely confident that our top-order will fire and win us games.” Bailey looks to improve fielding Kings XI Punjab could not have begun the season any better, moving to the top of the table with three successive wins on the back of some powerful hitting from Glenn Maxwell and David Miller, but the captain George Bailey believes that the team are yet to peak and could do with improving their fielding.”I’m pleased with winning. I still don’t think we’ve played a real good strong all-round game as yet,” Bailey said. “We’ve batted well throughout and our bowling was good tonight but I don’t think we’ve fielded to our potential yet. Just want to be realistic, there is still a long way to go in the tournament and a lot can happen.””There have been quite a few dropped catches here (at Sharjah). The problem has been that whenever the ball goes high in the air in night games, there is no back drop. That makes it extremely hard to pick up the ball how it’s coming down. Plus, there is a bit of pressure of dropping the catches too. I’m sure things will pick up.”Bailey also saved special praise for his left-arm spinner Akshar Patel, who has picked up four wickets from three games.”For a young guy, he’s doing a fantastic job. Not to forget his fielding too, he took a sharp catch today,” he said. “He is only going to get more confident. We really back his batting abilities too. We see a fantastic cricketer coming out in him.”

Ver a tabela assim é ruim. É jogo a jogo.
