David Saker has turned down a chance to become director of cricket at Warwickshire, saying that the prospect of back-to-back Ashes tours in the next year and the 2015 World Cup has left him “unfinished business” with England.Saker first revealed to ESPNcricinfo last month that he was attracted by the role relinquished by Ashley Giles last month after he took over day-to-day coaching duties with England’s one-day sides and Warwickshire were interested enough to pursue the matter.However, exploratory talks over the weekend have not come to fruition, leaving Saker to commit his future to England as he prepared to leave on Thursday with the team for their tours of India and New Zealand over the next three months.He told the : “I had talks with Warwickshire and it was certainly an attractive offer they made. But it has come a little too early for me. I have unfinished business with the England team and I would like to take that through at least until the end of the 2015 World Cup.”Warwickshire’s chairman Norman Gascoigne insisted that a firm offer had not been made. “We contacted David to clarify the situation with him and ask whether he wanted to apply or not. He came back to us and said that the timing was not right for him and that he intended to continue with England. That is as far as it went. I can categorically say that at no stage did we offer him the job.”Saker, lives south of Birmingham and, as a fulltime member of England’s backroom staff, still must withstand the heavy travelling demands that have caused Andy Flower to relinquish day-to-day management of England’s one-day sides to Giles.Since funding his own flight from Australia to be interviewed for the job, he has played a leading role in England’s home and away Ashes wins as well as victory in the Test series in India. He must be due a refund on his original ticket.His emphasis on the psychology and methodology involved in fast bowling, rather than biomechanics, has had a positive effect on England’s fast-bowling attack.His decision to stay with England increases the likelihood that Warwickshire will follow Giles’ initial recommendation and appoint somebody with links to the county.

Sheik também deu sua opinião sobre os planos do Corinthians para 2019. Ele foi perguntado se acreditava que o time seria coadjuvante este ano, mediante os investimentos de outros clubes, como Flamengo e os rivais Palmeiras e São Paulo. E foi irônico, citando a tal “quarta força” que marcou o clube em 2018. A expressão surgiu no início de 2017, colocando o Timão atrás dos rivais, mas o clube acabou campeão paulista e brasileiro. Sheik, então, recorreu ao passado vitorioso do clube recentemente.

-Eu super concordo. Nos últimos dez anos, o Corinthians vem sendo quarta, quinta, sexta força. Só que essa sexta força vem sendo campeã da Libertadores, três Brasileiros, Mundial, Paulistas, Recopa. Nem sei quantos, foram tantos. Quando jogador me acostumei trabalhar assim, deixa pensar que somos zebra. Tem dado certo assim – disparou.

Emerson Sheik encerrou a carreira de jogador no fim do ano passado, quando recebeu convite do presidente Andrés Sanchez para atuar na função fora das quatro linhas. Ao lado de Vilson, que também se aposentou no fim do ano, ele ocupará a vaga deixada por Alessandro Nunes, gerente de futebol nos últimos cinco anos.

Como vai trabalhar com Vilson
A amizade que foi criada enquanto atleta, ela se estende, ela continua. A gente está dividindo todas as funções. Obviamente o Duílio tem participado de tudo, porque tudo é muito novo para a gente. Mas as funções são divididas. Nós encontramos uma maneira de suprir a necessidade do clube, como Alessandro fazia, e está indo muito bem. São nove dias e estamos muito satisfeitos com esse período.

Convite para ser dirigente
Eu recebi o convite para voltar em dezembro de 2017. A minha ideia era disputar o Paulista, vencer o campeonato, vencemos, e encerrar a carreira. Já falei uma vez, que não sei o que o Fábio viu no primeiro semestre, empolgou e pediu para eu ficar no segundo semestre. Mas não era minha ideia. Mas foi convite do Corinthians. E eu me apeguei muito ao Alessandro, cara muito competente. Não entramos zerado, mas também não 100%. Já vínhamos conversando, e independente de assumir ou não, eu tinha muita curiosidade, e peguei o Alessandro, mesmo sem saber que assumiria, via uma possibilidade, talvez no Corinthians. A gente não entra totalmente cru.

Quem são as referências como dirigente
Eu tenho sete anos de Corinthians, oito. O Duílio me trouxe para o Corinthians. E nesses anos, eu convivi com ele, conheço o comprometimento dele com o clube, a transparência. O doutor Kalil também tem nos ajudado muito, uma pessoa incrível. Mas ter o Duílio do lado num momento como esse em que tudo é novidade facilita muito. Ele sempre está presente, trocando ideias, mostrando o caminho certo. Já aprendemos muito com eles. Estou do lado de quem sabe muito. E para mim eles servem de espelhos.

Criação de time sub-23 está na pauta?
Sim, na última semana viajamos para Itu, ver a Copinha. Todos estão observados, a ideia é fazer essa integração. Temos grandes jogadores na base. Todos serão observados de perto. Eu possivelmente vou estar olhando esses meninos com um carinho muito especial, porque sei o quão é importante para eles ter esse apoio do profissional e motivante também. Vamos acompanhar de perto toda a base.

Quem já pode subir do time da Copinha?
Tem uns 15 lá que dá vontade de pegar e colocar para treinar aqui. Mas tem alguns que estão se destacando, não só nos jogos, mas no comportamento. A ideia é, sim, após a Copinha, trabalhar com alguns atletas, mesmo que seja para treinar aqui no profissional, eles entenderem como é. Vamos acompanhar de perto.

Vai participar de contratações?
Essa parte é do Kalil, do Duílio, mas vamos participar de tudo. Opino, Vilson opina, a decisão final é do presidente, do Duílio com Kalil, assim como a opinião do treinador, que é importante. Mas vamos estar, sim, muito presentes em todas as conversas. Mas negociação, essa parte por enquanto está com o Duílio, porque a experiência está aqui hoje, mas vamos alcançar ele, em breve. A gente participa das conversas ligadas a contratações.

O uso de seus contatos internacionais é uma das funções de Zé Roberto em seu novo emprego, que assumiu logo depois de se aposentar, no fim de 2017. Depois de uma temporada no cargo, o ex-jogador, hoje com 44 anos, quer fazer cursos para se especializar e se sentir ainda mais útil.

– Foi um ano bem intenso. Até porque comecei a fazer uma coisa nova. A função de assessor técnico, que é um elo entre diretoria, comissão técnica e jogadores, e a transição base-profissional. Estou diariamente no clube e, também, acompanhando jogos do profissional e da base. É claro que, pela experiência que tive como jogador, consigo passar algo para os mais jovens através da liderança e imagem positiva que sempre tive. Mas, neste ano, quero ingressar em alguns cursos e buscar conhecimento de coisas que acho importante para a função e para eu crescer nesta nova carreira – falou, empolgado com a partida de domingo.

– A expectativa está grande, estou bastante ansioso, treinando um pouco também para aguentar esse solzão. Vou rever companheiros e voltar a viver esse ambiente, com o torcedor. Dá saudades. Estou muito feliz por voltar aos gramados para fazer o meu último jogo oficialmente, uma despedida pelo clube em que escolhi encerrar minha carreira. Foi uma ideia do presidente Maurício Galiotte e do Alexandre Mattos (diretor de futebol) e será muito mágico, um presente, um privilégio.

Australia’s resistance over that period arrived too late to change the result, but in it may be found the clues to a tighter contest when the second match begins in Hyderabad on Saturday.MS Dhoni, R Ashwin, Virat Kohli and Tendulkar were the pivotal contributors to India’s 1-0 series lead, showing greater discipline and awareness of the sort of cricket best played on the MA Chidambaram Stadium’s clay court. Save for Michael Clarke’s first-day century and James Pattinson’s fiery pace, it was not until Moises Henriques stood up with the bat in the second innings that the tourists showed evidence of catching up.A target of only 50 to win was reached with the help of some Tendulkar fireworks – towering sixes from his first two deliveries against Nathan Lyon – but Pattinson again bowled well to the openers and Lyon showed far greater consistency of line and control of length than he had managed while being taken for 3 for 215 in the first innings.Smart stats

India’s eight-wicket win is their 13th in Chennai. It is their most successful venue followed by Delhi, where they have 11 wins.

India have now won three of their last four Tests against Australia in Chennai (draw in 2004). The last defeat for India against Australia in Chennai came in 1969.

This is only the third time that Indian spinners have picked up all 20 wickets to fall in the match. The previous instance was against New Zealand in Auckland in 1976. Pakistan have done so twice and England once (Old Trafford 1956 when Jim Laker picked up 19 for 90).

The win is India’s best-ever against Australia in terms of wickets. Overall, they have won eight times chasing (seven at home).

With the win, MS Dhoni now moves level with Sourav Ganguly on the list of Indian captains with the most Test wins. His win-loss ratio (1.75) is also slightly superior to Ganguly’s 1.61.

The 66-run stand between Moises Henriques and Nathan Lyon is the second-highest last-wicket stand for Australia against India. The highest is 77 between Allan Border and Dave Gilbert in Melbourne in 1985.

India were left with some questions about their opening pair, M Vijay and Virender Sehwag doing little in either innings, and they may also wonder about subtracting another seam bowler from their XI should the Hyderabad surface be anything like this one. Australia have found a steady batting hand in Henriques, but much of their display in this match will be the cause of serious introspection.Henriques and Lyon had put on 66 for Australia’s last wicket, a defiant gesture after the earlier batsmen had failed to stand their ground. Sehwag sliced a brace of boundaries over the slips cordon from Pattinson, and when Peter Siddle replaced him he drove sweetly down the ground.Lyon, meanwhile, showed some evidence of improvement in his bowling. He twirled down far fewer deliveries that could be tucked around the corner behind square leg, and the better line forced some impatient premeditated strokes from Pujara. It also undid Sehwag when he snicked to Clarke at slip. This little joust was ultimately immaterial to the result, sealed as it was by Tendulkar’s sixes, but demonstrated that Lyon was learning.

Novidades só no banco de reservas

Embora Luiz Felipe Scolari tenha feito testes na equipe titular com Felipe Pires e Deyverson, a escalação inicial teve Gustavo Scarpa e Borja nessas duas vagas e apenas atletas que fizeram parte do elenco campeão brasileiro entre os titulares. Reforços, só Zé Rafael e o próprio Felipe Pires, mas no banco.

Gol cedo, mas vantagem perdida

Foi justamente a partir das “novidades” na escalação que o Palmeiras saiu na frente no Moisés Lucarelli. Em cruzamento de Scarpa da ponta direita, Borja desviou de cabeça e abriu o placar, aos 13 minutos. O colombiano começou a temporada tentando movimentar-se mais, saindo da área, e conseguiu ajudar enquanto o trio de meias também trocava constantemente de posição.

Mas diferentemente do que aconteceu ao longo de 2018, a defesa palmeirense teve dificuldades nesta estreia do Paulista, desde a dupla de volantes com Thiago Santos e Felipe Melo. Em uma jogada que envolveu o Verdão, o Red Bull empatou aos 34, com um belo chute de Jobson, sem chance para Weverton.

Verdão melhora pouco com trocas

Bruno Henrique e Felipe Pires entraram no intervalo, nas vagas de Felipe Melo e Gustavo Scarpa. Diferentemente da primeira etapa, em que abusou de chutões, o Palmeiras ficou mais com a bola no segundo tempo, investindo na troca de passes. Só que em alguns momentos a condução tornou-se lenta, facilitando para que o Red Bull bloqueasse as investidas.

Andrew Miller22-Apr-2016You’d have thought that Ben Stokes would be sick of the sight of batsmen teeing off after the agonies he endured at the hands of Carlos Brathwaite in the World T20 final in Kolkata earlier this month.And yet, after spending the morning in the company of Joe Root at Woburn Golf Course in Buckinghamshire, it is safe to surmise that Stokes – and the rest of the England team – have parked that near-miss in India and are ready to take the positives (as only sportsmen can) into their next international assignment: the Test series against Sri Lanka that gets underway next month.”I’d been back in the country for about eight or nine days before I realised I wanted to get back to training,” said Stokes, whose hectic round of sponsors’ engagements in recent days – from a game of street cricket in Soho to a bout of WWE in Newcastle and now to an Investec golf day – reflects the extent to which his and England’s exploits, in victory and defeat, have captured the imagination this winter.Though the winter ended in a manner that Stokes will not wish to dwell on for too much longer – with his head in his hands and Brathwaite’s fourth six in a row disappearing into the Eden Gardens stands – England’s shortcomings in that contest cannot detract from the sense that a real team ethic has been forged in the course of 18 extraordinary months.”The amount of people who’ve said how excited they were by the World Cup, and how we should be proud of what we achieved, it was a lot more than I thought it would be,” said Root. “That is really nice to see. That puts a smile on your face and gives us a lot of confidence.”The squads vary from format to format, and the captains too, with Alastair Cook and Eoin Morgan taking charge of red- and white-ball cricket respectively. However, Stokes and Root have been integral players throughout, from England’s reboot in limited-overs cricket to their hard-earned Test series wins against Australia and South Africa. Root in particular believes that the confidence forged in one format can be carried across to the others.”It’s a completely different playing XI, but we are implementing how we want to play in all three formats,” he said. “Cooky has been like Morgs in reminding us that we got here by playing in this way for our counties and through the last 18 months, so let’s keep trying to push that. We don’t want to get to a certain level and stop, we want to keep trying to improve and play positive and aggressive cricket.”Teeing off: Stokes prepares to unleash at Woburn•Investec

“In one-day cricket, I think perceptions have been changed for a while now,” he added. “We’ve said previously we’ve got inexperience and we are going to make mistakes, but we want to play a certain way and everyone’s committed to doing that.”We won’t get it right every time, but the more we do that, we’ll get better and better, and we’ll learn along the way, both from getting it right and getting it wrong. If we win both series it would be a huge achievement.”England’s batting line-up for the first Test against Sri Lanka, at Headingley on May 19, may be significantly altered from the team that was beaten in the fourth and final Test against South Africa at Centurion in January. Not only are they now looking for a replacement for James Taylor, who was sadly forced to retire last week with a serious heart condition, there is talk of Root – the best batsman in the team – being pushed up the order to No. 3, from where he will be better placed to influence the course of an innings.”Who knows?” said Root, who averages more than 65 at positions 4 and 5, from where he has scored eight of his nine Test hundreds. “There have been lots of runs scored in the County Championship so far, but I’ve not had any conversations with the coaches yet about batting orders. I feel pretty settled at 4 but if they want to change things up, I’m sure we’ll have a discussion and see what’s best for the side.”One man who would prefer Root to stay exactly where he is, however, is Stokes, who has played some of his finest innings alongside his team-mate at four-down – not least their game-changing stand of 161 in the Lord’s Test against New Zealand last summer.”His record at 4 and 5 has been incredible,” said Stokes. “I’d personally like him to stay at 4 as he’s been so successful. When we’ve got off to bad starts, he’s come in and still kept the run-rate going, and also it would mean he’s closer to where I’m batting, and I enjoy batting with him.”The reason for their success as a partnership, Stokes added, was their shared sense of enjoyment and relaxation in the heat of the battle.”Some players are very keen and switched on when they are batting in the middle,” he said. “That is them. They stay with themselves in their own bubble, and you know that and respect that, you let them do what they want.”But me and Joe are very similar in the middle – having a laugh, not taking things too seriously, letting things go on. It lets us both play our natural games, which we want to do anyway, but it almost frees us up even more. I know Rooty scores quick, he knows I score quickly. We don’t put any pressure on each other.”As for Root himself, he finished the World T20 as one of the most talked-about young cricketers in the game, with most commentators agreeing it is a three-way shoot-out between him, India’s Virat Kohli and New Zealand’s Kane Williamson when it comes to identifying the best current batsman in the world.The player himself, however, only has eyes for the team cause. “You hear stuff and it’s nice when people say nice things about you, but it’s about scoring runs, isn’t it?” he said. “It’s not about personal gain. It’s about winning games of cricket and being part of something really special with your team-mates.
