Anderson rested for third Test

England have omitted James Anderson from their squad for the third Test against West Indies

England have omitted James Anderson from their squad for the third Test against West Indies, which starts on Thursday. Anderson suffered a minor quad problem during England’s nine-wicket victory at Trent Bridge and, with the series already won, the selectors have decided to rest the bowling attack’s leader in order to keep him fresh for the rest of the summer. Anderson’s new-ball partner, Stuart Broad, has been included in an otherwise unchanged 12-man squad.Broad could also be told to put his feet up, with Steven Finn and Graham Onions available to step in as seam-bowling cover. Broad, who is England’s T20I captain, missed the second Test against Sri Lanka in April, as well as a planned stint in the IPL, with a calf injury and a decision on his involvement is expected nearer the start of the Edgbaston Test. Both Anderson and Broad have bowled more than 100 overs in the series so far.Geoff Miller, the national selector, said: “We have been made to work hard for our two victories so far and are delighted to have secured the series, however we know that we will need to continue to play some good cricket if we want a third win against the West Indies this week.”James Anderson will miss this Test as we look to manage his workload ahead of a busy period of cricket this summer and beyond, a decision which is in the best interests of the team and James himself.”England are due to play West Indies in three ODIs and a T20 international after the Tests, followed by a five-match ODI series against Australia, starting at the end of June. That will be followed by three Tests against South Africa, which will decide the No. 1 Test ranking, then five more one-day internationals and a three-match T20I series finishing on September 12. Nine days later, England will begin their defence of the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka.Although Anderson has not played for England’s T20 team since 2009, he has previously expressed a desire to break back into the side. His value in Tests, where he is ranked No. 3 in the world, is undisputed, however, and writing in his column he said it would be “extremely disappointing” to miss out against West Indies.”It would be different if I felt fatigued or was struggling with an injury,” he said. “But I believe I am fit to play – and while I am fit to play I want to play in every England game I can. Resting players is going to happen more and more often as the schedule gets busier and the ECB has been excellent at monitoring players to keep them fit and ready.”England are 2-0 up in the three-Test series against West Indies and had been widely expected to rest at least one member of the pace attack. Finn stood in for Broad in Sri Lanka in April, taking three wickets as England squared the series, and also replaced Anderson against the same opposition at Lord’s last year. A side strain ruled Anderson out of that match – the only Test he has missed since being rested for the 2010 tour of Bangladesh.Finn became the youngest Englishman to take 50 Test wickets in the same Test but was unable to retain his place and then slipped behind Tim Bresnan in a lengthy fast-bowling queue when injuries struck down Chris Tremlett. Finn has, however, become a key component of the one-day side and was the leading wicket-taker as England whitewashed Pakistan 4-0 in the UAE.Onions, who last played international cricket more than two years ago before suffering a career-threatening back injury, is also included and, if England decide to rest Broad as well, may get to resume a Test career that left off with two memorable rearguard batting actions during the drawn series in South Africa in 2010. Onions claimed career-best first-class figures on Saturday, with an 11-wicket haul in Durham’s defeat by Lancashire, and only Andre Adams has more than his 34 Championship scalps so far this season. The continuity in England’s selection policy means Jonny Bairstow is likely to get another chance to further his claims on the No. 6 spot, unless Andy Flower and Andrew Strauss decide to change the balance of the side and play five bowlers. Bairstow scored 16 and 0 not out on his debut at Lord’s, before being worked over by a series of short deliveries from Kemar Roach in making 4 during the second Test, but England will almost certainly want to have a further look at him before the arrival of South Africa next month.England squad Andrew Strauss (capt), Alastair Cook, Jonathan Trott, Kevin Pietersen, Ian Bell, Jonny Bairstow, Matt Prior (wk), Tim Bresnan, Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann, Steven Finn, Graham Onions

– O time está pronto.

'Sad we didn't get over the line' – Lake

Malcolm Lake rates his century against India Under-19s in Townsville as among his best knocks as his 118 brought Zimbabwe back into the match but couldn’t prevent defeat

George Binoy in Townsville14-Aug-2012

Malcolm Lakes’ innings, which broke his poor run with the bat, brought Zimbabwe back into the game but his team fell well short as he began to run out of partners•ICC/Getty

For a brief period in Townsville, India had a fright in a game they had to win to avoid being sent to the Plate Championship of the Under-19 World Cup. From the boondocks of 30 for 4, Zimbabwe’s Malcolm Lake resurrected the chase of 262. He singlehandedly dragged his team along with his clean, long-handled hitting but cricket isn’t supposed to be played by one man against 11. Lake was the last man out in the 45th over, having scored 118 out of 198, with the next highest contribution being 29.Lake, only just 18, is a tall allrounder from Harare who bowls right-arm medium pace but bats left-handed, like other illustrious Zimbabwe allrounders Neil Johnson, Sean Ervine and Andy Blignaut did. After making a duck against Papua New Guinea, he chose the grandest stage of his career so far to play his best innings.”It’s definitely my highest score,” Lake said. “It’s up there with the best I’ve batted for my team, just sad we couldn’t get over the line [in] the end.”He had an 87-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Luke Jongwe, which revived the chase, and it ended with a run-out that left Lake sitting on his haunches and shaking his head in disappointment as his partner walked back. His remaining partners did not stay as long.”In the beginning with Luke, [we wanted to] just knock it around, get ourselves into a position from where we can expand later, from where we can hit and get the big shots away,” Lake said. “Near the end I just wanted a partner. I was excited about the hundred but just sad we didn’t get over the line.”And he did play some big shots. The boundaries at Tony Ireland Stadium are of considerable size, although one side was shorter than the other today because the pitch closest to the pavilion was used. Lake picked out gaps in the off-side field for his fours but preferred the long-on and midwicket region when attempting sixes. He cleared it four times. His coach Chris Harris called it a “magnificent innings.” “It was one of those innings, when looking from the sidelines, you felt as though you had a chance, how well he was striking the ball,” Harris said. This century, however, was a dramatic turnaround in form for Lake, who had been struggling for runs even before his duck against Papua New Guinea. “He’s probably been in the worst nick of his life leading up to this tournament,” Harris said. “He’ll be the first to admit it. But he’s a tremendous striker of the ball and he is very much a confidence player, and we’d like to think he picked up a lot of confidence today. I’ve always seen him as a match-winner.”Some of Lake’s confidence with the bat would have come from his bowling performance, an economical seven-over spell that prevented India from getting 300. Harris reckoned Lake could have been faster than he was, and Lake also said he had told himself “not worry about the pace, get it in the right areas.”Those right areas were short of a length and straight. Kyle Bowie, Curthbert Musoko and Jongwe, however, bowled a fair number of full balls but were primarily guilty of giving India’s batsmen width to free their arms. India were 122 for 0 when Lake began his spell in the 23rd over.”During practice, we had been through a few plans [for the Indian batsmen],” Lake said. “The main plan was definitely to bring the length back and put them on the back foot. Campbell [Light] and I bowled very well to that plan.”Lake broke through in the third of his seven consecutive overs, giving Zimbabwe their first wicket, and denied the batsmen scoring opportunities. And though he had three overs remaining, he was not used anymore after the 35th over and ended on 1 for 19.That wasn’t the last questionable bowling decision the Zimbabwe captain Matthew Bentley would make. Light had been introduced only in the 42nd over and he had figures of 3 for 14 in three overs before conceding eight in the 48th over. Bentley replaced Light with Musoko for the 50th and watched Kamal Passi plunder 24 runs, propelling India from 237.”To be fair [to Bentley], part of the reason Curthbert has been picked is to bowl at the death, he’s been practising it,” said Harris. “From Matthew’s point of view, he thought Curthbert was the specialist bowler picked to do it. Today he had an off day.”Zimbabwe now need to beat West Indies and also get their net run-rate higher than that of India, who will probably beat Papua New Guinea. If they can’t do that, they will compete for the Plate Championship, after which several players will hope to secure places in Zimbabwe’s domestic franchise system.Harris had said that several of the Under-19 cricketers had come through the age-group system and it was vital their talent wasn’t lost after this World Cup because Zimbabwe Cricket had invested heavily in them. Lake is one such investment. He hasn’t played first-class cricket yet and he hopes his performance has caught the attention of the franchises.”I’ve come through all the age groups of Zimbabwe Cricket,” he said. “The standard of school cricket in Zimbabwe is what’s brought me through, many coaches at school and national level have brought me to this point. I’m still to see where cricket takes me, and where I’m going in my life.”With the right breaks, Lake could begin to follow the path Johnson, Ervine and Blignaut took.

Afghanistan run New Zealand close

A round-up of matches on August 14 during the Under-19 World Cup 2012

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Aug-2012

New Zealand’s bowlers overcame a spirited resistance from Afghanistan’s lower order to seal a thrilling nine-run win at the Kev Hackney Oval in Buderim. This win puts New Zealand at No. 2 in Group B, behind Pakistan, on run-rate, while Afghanistan are at the bottom.New Zealand won the toss and elected to bat, but struggled against the opening bowling duo of Aftab Alam and Sayed Shirzad as they slumped to 20 for 3 in the eighth over. Robert O’Donnell and Henry Walsh then set about rebuilding the innings as both stroked half-centuries. Their 108-run stand for the fourth wicket lifted New Zealand to 128 before Yamin Ahmadzai dismissed Walsh to pick up the first of his four wickets. New Zealand then lost wickets in a heap as Ahmadzai (4 for 35) and Shirzad (4 for 34) combined to restrict them to 198.Afghanistan’s chase started disastrously as New Zealand’s opening bowlers Jacob Duffy and Matthew Quinn reduced them to 26 for 5. However, Afghanistan’s lower order put up a fight – Najibullah Zadran (69) was involved in two half-century stands for the sixth and seventh wicket to lift Afghanistan to 139 for 6 before he was dismissed. No. 8 Afsar Khan (42) held firm as Afghanistan inched closer to the target. They needed 22 runs off the last two overs with three wickets in hand but Quinn and Duffy picked up a wicket each including that of Afsar in the final over as Afghanistan fell nine runs short to give New Zealand a close win.Australia ensured they would finish on top of the table in Group A thanks to a dominant performance against Ireland in Townsville. Ireland captain George Dockrell won the toss and chose to bat, but things didn’t go to plan with the 33-run opening stand between Robin Kelly and Ryan Hunter being the highest partnership of the innings. Fast bowler Alex Gregory got rid of both the openers and the No. 3, Jason van der Merwe. Shane Cassell (3 for 24) and the rest of the attack then ran through the middle order to bowl Ireland out for 129 in the 43rd over. Hunter was the top-scorer for Ireland with 31.It turned out to be a relatively straightforward chase for the hosts, although they were reduced to 45 for 3 at one stage. Captain Will Bosisto (36 not out) combined with Travis Head, who scored a quick 25, and then Sam Hain (26 not out) as the Australians cruised to the target in the 41st over.South Africa completed their second victory in as many games, comprehensively beating Namibia in Brisbane. The 209-run victory was set up by a double-century opening stand between Quinton de Kock and Chad Bowes, both scoring centuries in the process.South Africa chose to bat and the match was taken away from Namibia’s reach in the first 31.5 overs. De Kock and Bowes put on 212 in 191 balls, smacking 24 fours and three sixes between them. Once the stand was broken, none of the other batsmen could get an extended partnership going – Zhivago Groenewald struck with regularity to finish with three wickets, despite going for 85 in nine overs – but quick cameos made sure South Africa powered past 350.Chasing 360, Namibia were never in the match. No one in the line-up managed to get past Pelham Myburgh’s 37, and they could not score at a quick rate either. Namibia were bowled out for 150 in 46 overs – the lower order being cleaned up by offspinner Theunis de Bruyn, who finished with figures of 5-0-20-4.”Chad and I got off to a good start but it was difficult in the morning with a sticky and bouncy wicket,” de Kock said. “We had to work hard for our runs and I’m proud of our achievements today, they were well fought for.”Bowes said his side had gained good momentum ahead of their next game against Sri Lanka tomorrow. The confidence is up and the spirit within the side is high,” Bowes said. “We have a good net run-rate so it will take a little bit of the pressure off going into the game, but we’re ready to give it our best shot.”
