Ablish's 5 for 6 helps Punjab rout Delhi

A round-up of matches on the sixth match day of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2011-12

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Oct-2011North ZoneA headlining spell from Love Ablish helped Punjab to their third successive win in the Syed Mushtaq Ali competition, in the process handing Delhi their first defeat at the Bansi Lal Cricket Stadium, Rohtak. Delhi’s decision to bat came unstuck against Ablish who blitzed the top order, before coming back to mop up the tail and finish with dream figures of 4-2-6-5. Three of Delhi’s top five were dismissed for ducks, and if not for Mithun Manhas’ 25 and Puneet Mehra’s 35, they would have been bowled out in under 20 overs. The target of 86 posed Punjab with few problems, and they got home in the 17th over for the loss of four wickets.Narender Kumar and Ansuhl Gupta carried Services to an unlikely four-wicket victory over Himachal Pradesh with one ball to spare at the Bansi Lal Cricket Stadium in Rohtak. Chasing 122, Services had slumped to 63 for 6 in the 13th over, leaving them needing almost 9 runs an over with just four wickets in hand. Gupta had been batting patiently while wickets fell around him and found in Kumar a surprising, attacking ally. The No.8 hit his way to 35 not out, his highest score in Twenty20 cricket, from 22 balls, striking two fours and two sixes, to pick up the four points and take them into second place in the points table. Gupta top scored with 39 from a much more sedate 49 balls. Himachal Pradesh’s total had been built around opener Hemant Dogra, who made 32, and Rishi Dhawan, who made 31.Jammu & Kashmir succumbed to their third defeat in as many games, after cobbling up a sorry 66 for 8 in 20 overs against Haryana at Delhi Public School, Rohtak. Joginder Sharma, Harshal Patel and Kuldeep Hooda finished with combined figures of 6 for 31 off 12 overs to wreck the top order, while Sachin Rana chipped in with two wickets in one over. Haryana lost two early wickets in the chase, but Rahul Dewan and Rana finished the game with 4.1 overs to spare.West ZoneHalf-centuries from Ambati Rayudu and Kedad Devdhar at the Khandheri Cricket Stadium in Rajkot helped Baroda consign Gujarat to their third loss in as many games, and move to the top of the West Zone table. After being inserted, Baroda were rocked early by the loss of Pinal Shah with no run on the board, but Rayudu and Devdhar counterpunched with a 109-run stand off 64 balls. Rayudu departed after striking four sixes and three fours in his 58, and Yusuf Pathan ensured his dismissal did not affect the scoring, as he ran up 39 off 32 balls to help Baroda to 177 for 4. Gujarat’s chase was off to a strong start courtesy IPL find Asad Pathan (53 off 29 balls) before Baroda came back with regular wickets. The Pathan brothers, Irfan and Yusuf, were the most stifling of Baroda’s bowlers (combined figures of 3 for 49 off eight overs) as Gujarat finished 18 runs short.Shushant Marathe bludgeoned his way to an unbeaten 90 to lead Mumbai past Saurashtra at the Khandheri Cricket Stadium in Rajkot. Saurashtra chose to bat and some aggressive hitting from Pratik Mehta, whose 38 included two fours and three sixes and came from just 19 balls, and captain Jaydev Shah, who made 36 from 22, helped them post a competitive total of 151 for 5. Mumbai captain Wasim Jaffer was caught behind in the second over, but Marathe was unfazed and rattled along in the company of India batsman Rohit Sharma (32) as the pair added 86 together. A couple of quick wickets after Rohit’s departure proved to be nothing more than a brief blip as Marathe ensured Mumbai picked up their first win in their second game.East ZoneAn abject batting performance from Tripura resulted in a loss to Assam by 45 runs at the Keenan Stadium in Jamshedpur in a match shortened to 13 overs a side. Tripura chose to bowl first and had Assam struggling at 35 for 3 but Amit Sinha’s 48 from 33 balls, a remarkable effort given that only two batsmen reached double figures, lifted Assam to 101 for 8. Tripura stumbled right out of the gate and were quickly reduced to 23 for 5 in the sixth over. Captain Rajib Saha (17) managed to reach double figures, but nine batsmen scored less than five runs as Tripura laboured to 46 for 9 in their 13 overs. Rajagopal Satish picked up 3 for 12 for Assam, while Dhiraj Goswami took 2 for 7.Bengal and Jharkhand shared points after their fixture at the Keenan Stadium was washed out without a ball being bowled.Central ZoneCaptain Mohnish Mishra and fast bowler Amarjeet Singh combined to give Madhya Pradesh a 35-run victory over Vidarbha at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore. MP chose to bat and Mishra led from the front, top scoring with 49 from 32 balls, and adding 58 with fellow opener Naman Ohja in 5.5 overs. Rameez Khan’s 32 in the middle order helped MP to 148 for 5. Vidarbha got off to a poor start, losing three wickets with only 21 on the board, but 59-run fourth wicket partnership between former India batsman Hemang Badani and Apoorv Wankhade appeared to give them the upper hand. However, when Amarjeet had Badani caught for 35, that triggered a collapse and Vidarbha lost their last seven wickets for 33 runs. Amarjeet picked up three more wickets to finish with figures of 4 for 21.Railways coasted to a seven-wicket win over Uttar Pradesh at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore. Railways chose to field and it took a 66-run sixth wicket stand between Parvinder Singh (41) and Arish Alam (33) to lift UP to 113 all out, as only one other batsmen reached double figures. Railways were always in control of the chase, with opener Mahesh Rawat making an unbeaten 50 to see his side home.

Series heads for gripping finish

Pat Cummins claimed six wickets in his debut Test•AFP

Aided greatly by Usman Khawaja, Ricky Ponting summoned his deepest reserves of skill and focus to give Australia a fighting chance of chasing 310 to square the two-match series against South Africa.Ponting’s 122-run union with the sure-handed Khawaja, who was out to Imran Tahir only one ball before the close, took the tourists to 142 for 3, leaving the match and series deliciously poised with one day remaining. In an innings critical to his career and perhaps the manner of its conclusion, Ponting presented the straightest bat he has managed in quite some time to make a first Test half-century since the opening Test of the Ashes series last December. The captain Michael Clarke will accompany Ponting on the final morning.Dale Steyn’s bold striking meant the tourists required the highest fourth innings target to win a Test at the Wanderers, despite a stirring six-wicket haul on debut for the 18-year-old Pat Cummins.Shane Watson and Phillip Hughes failed to repeat their first innings displays, both out to Vernon Philander with only 19 scored, but Ponting and Khawaja dulled the home side’s offensive.Without Steyn’s 41, speckled with three sixes, Australia might easily have been chasing a target as thin as 250, after the hosts lost 4 for 29 in the morning to be 266 for 7. Cummins’ remarkable efforts, adding up to one of the most outstanding debuts by an Australia fast bowler in the past 40 years, prevented South Africa from making the game entirely safe.Hashim Amla went on to a deserved 105 from his overnight 89, but was involved in a run-out to account for Ashwell Prince and then became Mitchell Johnson’s third wicket of the series. Nathan Lyon delivered another useful spell, only to be denied the wicket of Steyn via the vagaries of the DRS.Australia’s openers added 174 in the first innings, but in the second Watson allowed Philander to crash a straight delivery into off stump second ball, and after a pair of boundaries Hughes sparred at the same bowler to present a catch to Jacques Kallis in the slips.Khawaja had begun with a pair of wonderfully crisp boundaries in Philander’s first over and Ponting, the eyes of the cricket world upon him in the manner of Mark Taylor at Edgbaston in 1997 or Steve Waugh at Sydney in 2003, eluded the early shuffle and lbw that had confounded him so far on this tour. Though he was beaten by the odd seaming delivery, twice Ponting swivelled into the pull shots of his pomp. Khawaja proved equally adept with a horizontal bat, and Australia’s 50 was raised before tea.Play resumed in bright sunshine, and Ponting made hay in the company of Khawaja to frustrate the diligent efforts of South Africa’s bowlers. Slowly, but increasingly surely, they met the challenge of each bowler, be it Steyn’s pace, Philander’s line or Morne Morkel’s bounce. Tahir’s introduction had Ponting scampering down the wicket almost every ball, and overthrows gifted Khawaja a first half-century in his fourth Test.Steyn was straining every sinew in search of a wicket, but Khawaja in particular was able to pick him off for runs, and one hook sailed over the head of fine leg for a splendid six. There were the vaguest signs of fatigue or discomfort from Steyn, in a match that has tested the stamina of bowlers on both sides.Smart stats

Pat Cummins became the first Australian fast bowler to take a five-wicket haul on debut since Stuart Clark in Cape Town in 2006.

Cummins’ analysis of 6 for 79 is the best bowling performance by an Australian bowlers in a Test in South Africa since South Africa’s readmission.

The 147-run stand between AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla is the second-highest fourth-wicket stand for South Africa against Australia since South Africa’s readmission.

Amla’s century is his 14th in Tests and his second in consecutive matches against Australia. He has now scored 4136 runs at an average of 47.54.

The 122-run stand between Usman Khawaja and Ricky Ponting is the fourth-highest third-wicket stand for Australia in Tests against South Africa (since the latter’s readmission). Ponting has been involved in three century stands for the third wicket.

Khawaja was on 65 when Tahir switched to over the wicket against Australia’s No. 3. A natural against pace, Khawaja is still learning to read spin, and he prodded uncertainly forward to edge a googly to slip. Clarke only had time to face one ball, pushed for a single, before the umpires tramped off for bad light and eventually called stumps. The tourists had needed a rush of wickets on the fourth morning, and Clarke started off with Cummins and Johnson in search of it. Swinging the old ball prodigiously at times, Cummins maintained his rapid progress when he coaxed de Villiers into chasing one that curled away. Clarke held the catch and dared to hope.Amla completed a century of formidable composure, cuffing Peter Siddle through point to get there, but his insistence on a short single to the right of Ponting resulted in a mix-up with Prince and the left-hander’s exit. Johnson, still somewhat out of sorts, was able to produce a handy cutter that took Amla’s outside edge on the way through to Brad Haddin, and suddenly Australia’s position was arguably the one preferred by neutrals.Mark Boucher swatted three boundaries before driving at Lyon and snicking to slip. He loitered at the crease partly because he also hit the ground, as well as out of recognition that not much batting remained after him. Steyn had made only five and the lead was only 246 when he was beaten by a Lyon off break and so very nearly lbw. But the umpire Billy Bowden demurred, suspecting an inside edge, and Australia’s referral was refused, not for an inside edge but because the ball’s projected path was not hitting enough of leg stump. This episode felt more damaging in the ensuing overs, as Steyn demonstrated the knack for nuisance batting he had famously shown with JP Duminy at the MCG in 2008, and Philander played with the level of skill befitting a No. 8. Clarke tried Michael Hussey before reverting belatedly to the second new ball.Nearing lunch, Steyn swung hard at Johnson and edged through the hands of Clarke, and Siddle moved the ball too much to claim the outside edge the tourists so desperately required.Having rested up in the latter part of the morning session, Cummins produced a snorter first ball after lunch to clip the glove of Philander. Bowden hesitated before giving Philander out, but the batsman’s decision-referral found just enough circumstantial evidence to ensure the original call was upheld. Next ball Cummins whirred down a yorker to wreck the stumps of Morne Morkel, thus claiming five wickets, and Imran Tahir did well to keep out a hat-trick ball that tailed away.By surviving the over Tahir allowed Steyn to keep blazing away, and he lustily struck sixes off Siddle and Cummins. Those hits, plus a glove down the legside, added precious runs. Tahir managed one boundary himself, but Steyn eventually nicked Cummins behind to conclude yet another beguiling passage in this all-too-short series.

Australia to manage Cummins' workload

Australia will need to manage the workload of their young fast bowler Pat Cummins, according to the captain Michael Clarke

Australia will need to manage the workload of their young fast bowler Pat Cummins, according to the captain Michael Clarke. Cummins was Man of the Match in his first Test thanks to his seven wickets at the Wanderers, where he also struck the winning runs in a display that was more mature than most people expected of an 18-year-old.Fans are excited about seeing Cummins play at home, but with six Tests coming up this summer – two against New Zealand and four against India – it will be a heavy burden on Cummins if he is to play all of Australia’s matches. Apart from the Tests, Australia will play two Twenty20s against India in January, and up to 11 one-day internationals in the tri-series with India and Sri Lanka.Cummins is contracted to Cricket Australia but he could also have state commitments with New South Wales when time permits. This time last year he had not yet played for his state, and Australia will need to ensure they do not ask too much of Cummins in his first year of full-time cricket.”We’ve got to be smart,” Clarke said. “I don’t think it’s possible for Paddy right now to play all forms of the game for Australia. To play every single game I think would be silly. That’s only my opinion. We need to speak to the selectors and we need to make a plan for him, because he’s got a bright future. He’s got the potential to be an amazing cricketer for Australia, and we have to be smart and make sure we look after him.”In Johannebsurg, Cummins was Australia’s best bowler and took 6 for 79 in the second innings, his swing, pace and aggression turning the match in Australia’s favour when South Africa could have shut them out. He was also calm when he came to the crease with Australia needing 18 runs to win with two wickets in hand; he hit 13 of them, including a four off Imran Tahir to seal the result.”He’s an amazing talent,” Clarke said. “He’s shown that in the shorter forms of the game. He’s shown that throughout this Test. The one thing that continues to impress me is not just his bowling. I’ve made it very clear to him that I think he’s a very good batsman, with a lot of talent. He just needs to continue to work hard with that. He’s as good an athlete in the field as we’ve had come into this team for a while.”While Cummins was the standout, his bag of wickets only highlighted the lack of victims claimed by the more senior fast bowlers, Mitchell Johnson and Peter Siddle. Cummins will surely be the first bowler selected for the opening Test against New Zealand at the Gabba, starting on December 1, but Clarke said it was not a concern that Australia had relied so heavily on a teenage debutant in Johannesburg.”I couldn’t be happier, I don’t care who gets the wickets,” Clarke said. “I said that in Sri Lanka, Michael Hussey can get ten-for, I don’t care who gets the wickets. I just want 20 wickets and I want to get more runs than the opposition. It was Paddy’s day. First Test in Brisbane could be Peter Siddle’s day or Mitchell Johnson’s day.”

No time paulista, Dudu voltou a jogar mal e complicou a vida da equipe.Esse resultado coloca os cariocas em oitavo lugar, com 21 pontos. Já o Verdão fica em sexto, com 23.

Show de vaias

Boots worn by the young fast bowlers Pat Cummins, James Pattinson and Josh Hazlewood are being investigated by Cricket Australia as a potential source of the foot injuries that have cruelled their summer.Pat Howard, the Australia team performance manager, has requested the investigation after noting that Cummins, Pattinson and Hazlewood were all wearing the same type of Asics cricket boots while sustaining foot injuries.”I’ve asked exactly the same question,” Howard told ESPNcricinfo. “It’s a fair question, we’re not suggesting it is the reason, but it is something that has to be reviewed as part of the overall.”Workloads, body management, history, age, footwear, all those things have got to be reviewed as part of the bigger picture.”There’s lots of people wearing Asics that haven’t had that problem. It is definitely being reviewed, but the reality is they’re all young men and it is also about how much bowling have they done in the lead-up to this period [to getting injured].”Cummins complained of heel pain during his Test debut against South Africa in Johannesburg, and has not played a competitive match since after the early signs of stress fractures were spotted.Pattinson scooped 25 wickets in four Tests before complaining of foot pain during the second innings of the SCG Test, and was ruled out of the remainder of the series against India when scans also revealed stress hot spots in the metatarsal bone.Hazlewood, who made his ODI debut for Australia in 2010, returned to action for New South Wales this summer after a lengthy recovery from back stress fractures, but has been put out of action for the remainder of the domestic summer due to a fracture in his left foot. When he took the job as team performance manager from a background of rugby and pharmacy, Howard promised to ask awkward questions, and the one of fast bowlers’ footwear is not the most convenient. Asics, manufacturers of the boots worn by the fast bowling trio, took up a lucrative equipment and sponsorship deal with CA at the start of the summer.Asics boots have long been the favoured footwear of fast bowlers in Australia, and are also popular in England.Howard said that while the injuries had been unfortunate for those concerned, they had also allowed the selectors to expand the pool of fast bowlers they are confident of choosing for international duty, whether they be in the marquee series against India or lower profile engagements against New Zealand or the West Indies.”We have changed the mandate for what we look for out of different series,” Howard said. “What we have done well and the selectors and the coaches and the medical staff have worked really hard on, is having Mitchell Starc and Ryan Harris there around the Test team.”They were coming into the squad in Sydney, bowling in the nets in Melbourne, we wanted these guys in and around because we knew the workloads had been very high for the likes of James Pattinson and we had to make sure players were ready to go.”Part of it is mitigating injury and part of it is making sure the next guys are raring and ready to go. We know players will be injured and one of the positive things we’ve got out of this summer is we’ve got a lot of bowlers we believe in, and we actually believe there’s a couple more we can believe in. That’s been a positive out of the summer.”
