Reservas do Palmeiras perdem para o São Caetano e ouvem vaias no Allianz

O São Caetano do técnico Pintado soma três vitórias seguidas e ocupa a segunda colocação do Grupo B, um ponto atrás do São Paulo. Na quinta, recebe o Botafogo-SP.

O alvo

Hodge heroics lift Victoria to victory

Brad Hodge rushed to his second hundred in consecutive matches as he guided a difficult Victorian chase to beat Queensland on a cold night at the Gabba. Chasing the Bulls’ 8 for 238, Hodge opened and stayed until the end as he carried his men to victory with five balls and two wickets to spare.Hodge, who blasted 134 against Western Australia last week, launched two late sixes and 28 from his last eight balls, taking him to a career-best 140 off 121 deliveries. The Bushrangers were 18 behind at the 20-over break and Hodge, who resumed on 54, took a while to warm-up as he dealt with a series of setbacks.Hodge collected four boundaries from a Chris Swan over to lift the pace and stayed cool to cover for the exits of Andrew McDonald (26) and Matthew Wade (21), who was caught behind slashing to the debutant Cameron Gannon. Ryan Carters (0) gave Swan his third but Michael Hill and Mark Cleary made useful contributions to support Hodge.Craig Philipson provided an important late burst for Queensland with an unbeaten 53 off 54 after the Bulls had struggled for momentum during their second innings. Lee Carseldine and Chris Lynn were cruising along as the hosts were 2 for 114 after 20 overs, but they found it hard to regain their rhythm on their return.Carseldine fell for 38 and Lynn pushed on to 50 before being bowled by Cleary. Dirk Nannes did the most damage for the visitors with 4 for 44 off 12 overs in his first domestic game of the season.

Warne texts Ponting to explain Twitter comments

Shane Warne has smoothed over a potential rift with Ricky Ponting after he criticised the Australian captain’s field placements for the spinner Nathan Hauritz on Wednesday

Shane Warne has smoothed over a potential rift with Ricky Ponting after he criticised the Australian captain’s field placements for the spinner Nathan Hauritz on Wednesday. During the final day in Bangalore, as India moved towards victory, Warne tweeted that he was feeling sorry for Hauritz: “How the hell can hauritz bowl to this field??”But as Ponting later explained, Hauritz himself had asked for the very fielders that Warne was upset about. On Thursday, Warne said he was only responding to questions from fans and that he had made up with Ponting after the match, which Australia lost by seven wickets.”Me and Punter swapped a few SMSs last night,” Warne told Australia’s Channel Nine. “We’re mates, we’re going to disagree a few times, it doesn’t mean suddenly we hate each other and things like that.”Warne also said that despite Australia losing the series 2-0, he had not changed his opinion that Ponting’s men could regain the Ashes this summer. The battle for the urn kicks off in Brisbane on November 25 and Warne said the Indian series should not have any effect on Australia’s preparation.”It’s been hard work in India a few times,” Warne said. “We got smashed all over the park as spinners. It’s very difficult. Unfortunately to lose 2-0 to India is not great, but I don’t think it will have an impact on the Ashes.”Australia are always tough to beat at home. They’re a pretty proud team. We’ve always been like that over the last 20 odd years that I’ve been playing. I think we’ll give the Poms a run for their money out here.”

Southampton predicted XI vs Brighton

Southampton will look to return to winning ways in the Premier League this afternoon as they make the short trip down the south coast to take on Graham Potter’s high-flying Brighton.

Having ended a run of no win in six with a 1-0 victory over Arsenal, the Saints returned to their bad habits, losing 2-0 at lowly Burnley on Thursday evening.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men are safe, but a top-half finish looked extremely possible a month ago with a place in the top ten come the end of the season now looking a tall task.

However, the Saints will leapfrog the Seagulls with a victory at the AMEX Stadium today, so, who should Hasenhuttl entrust to oversee victory on the south coast?

Here is how Football FanCast expects Southampton to line up in Sussex:

Saints XI: Forster, Walker-Peters, Bednarek, Salisu, Perraud, Romeu, Ward-Prowse, S. Armstrong, Elyounoussi, Adams, Broja.

Having played around with different formations of late, we expect Hasenhuttl to return to his favoured 4-2-2-2 set-up with the use of a back-five offering inconsistent results in the last two matches.

After an exceptional game against Arsenal and another bright display at Turf Moor, Fraser Forster keeps his place in between the sticks as expected.

However, there is a change in the defence as Mohamed Salisu returns to the starting lineup, having been dropped after the 6-0 defeat to Chelsea two weeks ago.

The Ghanaian is undoubtedly the Saints’ best defender but had been under par for a handful of games, hence Hasenhuttl proving to the 23-year-old that his place in the side isn’t guaranteed.

Jan Bednarek keeps his place whilst Yan Valery and Lyanco drop out to allow the change of formation.

The former has been developed into a centre-back this season having notoriously been a right-back but has a bad habit of proving unreliable when handed a run of games, with The Athletic’s Dan Sheldon labelling the £16k-per-week 23-year-old a “weak link” in the defence.

As expected, Oriol Romeu and James Ward-Prowse continue their partnership in central midfield whilst Stuart Armstrong and Mohamed Elyounoussi will look to provide width and creativity against a solid Seagulls side that have conceded 40 goals in 33 matches.

The final change comes up front, with Che Adams making his return to the side, having been an unused substitute against Arsenal and coming off of the bench against Burnley.

The £18m-rated striker has netted eight goals this term and has looked his best when deployed alongside Armando Broja.

The two sides meet for a 2pm kick-off with just one point separating the south coast outfits.

Tanvir six-for puts ZTBL on top

A round-up of the first day of the opening round of matches in Division 1 of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Oct-2010

Sohail Tanvir ran through the Rawalpindi line-up•AFP

Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited dominated the first day against Rawalpindi at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium and have taken control of the game. Left-arm seamer Sohail Tanvir and Inftikhar Anjum – both have played for Pakistan – ran through Rawalpindi to skittle them out for 115. Tanvir grabbed 6 for 41 – his tenth haul of five or more wickets in first-class games – while Iftikhar backed him up with three. The top scorer for Rawalpindi was wicketkeeper Jamal Anwar with 29 but his team capitulated, losing their last six wickets for 15 runs. In response, ZTBL overcame a poor start to finish the day on 119 for 2, a lead of four runs, with Shahid Yousuf and captain Imran Nazir going strong with unbeaten half-centuries.Ahmad Raza’s five wicket haul ensured Multan shared the honours with Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited after opener Ali Waqas made his second first-class century at the Multan Cricket Stadium. Waqas put on 93 with fellow opener Naeemuddin, who made 56, before adding 90 with Raza Ali Dar to put Northern Gas in a commanding position at 183 for 1. That’s when Raza got into the act, taking five of the next six wickets to fall, including Waqas for 105, as Multan clawed their way back in to the match. Waqas’ century took 222 balls and contained 13 fours. Northern Gas ended the day at 282 for 7, with Raza taking 5 for 96.Habib Bank claimed the honours on the first day of their Division 1 clash against Faisalabad at the Iqbal Stadium. Pakistan legspinner Danish Kaneria’s 62nd five-wicket haul spun Faisalabad to 172 all out after fast bowler Sarmad Anwar had taken two early wickets to put them on the back foot. Faisalabad had slumped to 114 for 7 but No. 9 Hasan Mahmood’s fighting 39 lifted them to a modest score. The Habib Bank openers knocked off 40 runs by stumps, with Ahmed Shehzad hitting five fours in his unbeaten 27.Islamabad plodded to 240 for 7 against National Bank of Pakistan at the Diamond Club Ground, pushed along by forties from Imad Wasim and Ameer Khan. Whenever Islamabad built up a decent partnership, one of National Bank’s bowlers would strike, and then Islamabad would rebuild slowly all over again. This trend was repeated throughout the day, and Islamabad had seven partnerships between 20 and 40. Ameer took 193 deliveries for his 43, and Imad’s unbeaten 48 came off 118. Islamabad were also helped by the 43 extras that National Bank conceded, including 23 no-balls. Five of the six bowlers used were among the wickets.Thirteen wickets fell on the first day of the encounter between Sialkot and Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) at the Jinnah Stadium. Left-arm spinner Zulfiqar Babar, with 3 for 23, led WAPDA’s bowlers as they scythed through Sialkot, who folded up for 126. Majid Jehangir was the only batsman to offer resistance with his 55 that included nine fours. Opener Kamran Younis made 24 before he was run out. Fast bowlers Sarfraz Ahmed and Naved-ul-Hasan took two wickets apiece. Prince Abbas’ twin strikes hurt WAPDA, but opener Adil Nisar’s patient unbeaten 33 took them to 74 for 3 at stumps.

Ten Hag and Rangnick ‘pushing’ for Mitchell

Manchester United have been linked with a move for AS Monaco sporting director Paul Mitchell, Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg has reported.

The Lowdown: Mitchell profiled

Mitchell, who previously played in the Football League, is 40 years of age and has been with the Ligue 1 club since 2020.

He has previous experience of working in England as a chief scout with MK Dons, Southampton and Tottenham, admitting last year that he loves the Premier League.

Mitchell has also worked in Germany and the USA, but it looks as if he is wanted back in England ahead of Erik ten Hag’s first season in charge at Old Trafford.

The Latest: Plettenberg’s post

Plettenberg took to Twitter on Tuesday morning to share some news regarding Mitchell and Manchester United.

He revealed that both Ten Hag and Ralf Rangnick are ‘pushing’ for him to move to Old Trafford and have given him their endorsement, with Mitchell ‘open’ to the idea of leaving Monaco in the summer.

The Verdict: Smart move?

United will be losing chief scout Jim Lawlor and head of global scouting Marcel Bout over the summer, so bringing in someone like Mitchell could be a shrewd decision.

Mitchell was the mastermind behind successful Spurs deals for Dele Alli, Toby Alderweireld, Son Heung-Min and Kieran Trippier, while he also helped RB Leipzig to establish themselves in the Bundesliga.

It looks as if it will be an extremely busy summer off the pitch at Old Trafford, with up to 10 new signings potentially coming in, so finalising a deal for Mitchell to help Ten Hag over the coming months could be helpful.
