Ex-Rangers midfielder Barry Ferguson has suggested St Johnstone’s Zander Clark as a potential replacement if Allan McGregor leaves the club at the end of the season. 

The lowdown

McGregor, who turned 40 at the end of January, is out of contract at the end of the current campaign.

At the start of the season, Steven Gerrard rotated his ‘keepers, handing chances to Jon McLaughlin and Robby McCrorie, but McGregor has now started every league game since Halloween.

The Athletic’s Jordan Campbell recently wrote that he was expected to depart Ibrox in the summer, along with Connor Goldson and Steven Davis.

Significantly, Clark is also set to be free agent in five months’ time, meaning Rangers could snap him up on a free.

A report from The Daily Record in November revealed that The Gers were ‘closely’ monitoring the 29-year-old.

The latest Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show (via Glasgow World), Ferguson said he’d like to see McGregor stay for another year, but backed Jon McLaughlin and Clark to be able successors.”Jon McLaughlin is a really good backup keeper, I really like him,” he said.”Zander Clark is another, St Johnstone have had a poor season but Zander is still performing at a high level.”I’d like him to stay. While he can’t compete with McGregor, who’s played more than 400 times for Rangers, Clark does at least have plenty of experience.

He’s one short of 150 games in the Scottish top flight, and he’s kept an impressive 51 clean sheets along the way – that ratio of 0.34 is not far off McGregor’s top flight ratio of 0.46, when considering the quality of the squads they are playing in.

It also bodes well that Steve Clark has called him up to the Scotland squad twice this season, and that St Johnstone manager Callum Davidson has dubbed him ‘phenomenal’.

The £405,000-rated ‘keeper does have some weaknesses – WhoScored say he could improve when it comes to long passing and claiming crosses – but perhaps the opportunity to snap him up on a free will prove too good to turn down.

The Australian left-hander smashed a blistering 41 off 19 balls, hitting eight boundaries, as Lancashire chased down a victory target of 177 to win by six wickets with three balls to spare.The Foxes had posted a challenging 176 for 6 – their best score of the season – with Jacques Du Toit and James Taylor both making half-centuries. But Lancashire were always up with the required rate and Katich finished things off with a boundary blitz that sent the Foxes crashing to their fourth defeat in a row at home.It is Katich’s final game for Lancashire in the competition. After playing for them this weekend in the County Championship game against Yorkshire he joins up with the Australian squad for the forthcoming Test series against Pakistan.Lancashire were given the perfect start to their chase by openers Stephen Moore and Tom Smith who put on 44 in the first five overs. Moore stuck three sixes in his 26 off 15 balls and Smith hit three fours and a six as he made 32 off 25 balls.Steven Croft continued the Lancashire charge with a quickfire 42 off 36 balls and also included a six before being brilliantly caught behind by Paul Nixon off the bowling of James Benning. But it was only left-arm spinner Claude Henderson who caused any real trouble to the visitors claiming two wickets in two balls to give Foxes some hope of a victory.But Katich and Paul Horton snatched that away from them in a fifth-wicket stand, with Katich hitting six boundaries off the first 10 balls he faced. Everton are one of the Premier League clubs ‘tracking’ Bristol City’s teenage midfielder Alex Scott, according to Football Insider. 

The lowdown

The 18-year-old has been used in a number of different positions this season by Robins manager Nigel Pearson. He has played most of his minutes as an attacking midfielder or right midfielder, but he can also occupy deeper central roles.

He broke into the team at the back end of the 2020/21 season and has gone to make 24 appearances so far this term. Scott is under contract at Ashton Gate until June 2025, with Transfermarkt valuing him at £270,000.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Scott features on the ‘target list’ of ‘many’ Premier League clubs, with Everton among them.

Scouts from Goodison Park, along with Leicester City, apparently watched him against Blackpool last Saturday. In light of this, Bristol City are said to be ‘bracing themselves’ for bids in the summer.

The verdict

Scott has contributed three goals and two assists in his 20 Championship starts, a decent return for a teenage midfielder.

He has earned comparisons to Jack Grealish, the most expensive player in Premier League history, because he plays with his socks rolled down and is frequently able to win free kicks in dangerous areas (via The Daily Mail). Indeed, his former coach Tony Vance has marvelled at the teenager’s ability to ‘float around the football pitch’.

There are still some weaknesses to iron out – WhoScored identify shortcomings in aerial duels and discipline – but that’s to be expected at this embryonic stage in his career.

He appears to be an ‘elite’ talent (to quote figures at Bristol City), and Frank Lampard would surely love to get his hands on him.

Cork, who turns 39 next month, finished with 5 for 50 as Kent lurched to 251 all out after their captain Robert Key had won the toss.In reply, Hampshire lost in-form opener James Adams first ball and then Liam Dawson to end a turbulent first day 200 behind at 51 for 2. Cork’s burst of wickets took his first-class career total to 944 and the ex-Derbyshire and Lancashire player is also in sight of another impressive milestone, requiring 400 runs for his 10,000.Key was Cork’s first victim in the 11th over when the bowler took a smart return catch, and the rest was a bit of a procession with Geraint Jones and Martin van Jaarsveld both out by the 26th over. Giovanni van Bronkhorst enjoyed a magical night in the Europa League on Thursday, in a game many would have expected his side to lose in Germany.

It was Van Bronckhorst’s best game as Rangers boss since replacing Steven Gerrard, with numerous players performing magnificently.

The Latest: Sutton hails ‘excellent’ Jack

One of those was Jack, who made three tackles and interceptions apiece at Signal Iduna Park, as well as winning five duels, according to Sofascore, winning the ball back for his side a total of 11 times in an all-action performance.

Taking to Twitter after the game, Sutton lauded the Gers midfielder:

“Well played Rangers, a huge result. Some big performances but Ryan Jack really excellent.”

The Verdict: Big-game masterclass

While Jack may not have been a headline-maker in the game, neither scoring or assisting, his battling performance was one of the most effective in an understated manner.

His aforementioned statistics during the match highlight his tenacity and dominance in the middle of the park, up against a player in Jude Bellingham who is being tipped for great things.

If you take into account that this was just Jack’s second start of the season because of serious injury problems, it looks even more impressive.
