Pietersen's hoodoo undermines impressive Tredwell

There was only one burning topic of conversation at the close of the first day’s play at the Divisional Stadium – Kevin Pietersen’s voodoo-like curse by the Slow Left-Armers Union

It was only polite to ask James Tredwell to elaborate on his most successful day as an England offspinner, as he scalped six Bangladeshi wickets to enhance his chances of playing in next week’s first Test at Chittagong. But there was only one burning topic of conversation at the close of the first day’s play at the Divisional Stadium – Kevin Pietersen’s dreadful run of form, and the seemingly voodoo-like curse that has been inflicted on him by the Slow Left-Armers Union.Pietersen’s contribution to the contest lasted all of five balls in the closing moments of the day, but it was all that was needed to set tongues a-wagging once again. Mehrab Hossain Jr has claimed 45 wickets in 46 first-class games, and has a grand total of four Test-match victims to his name. But a solitary over was all he needed to bump Tredwell’s unstinting efforts off tomorrow’s front pages. Facing up to his fifth delivery, Pietersen propped forward uncertainly, and snicked a routine edge to the keeper. And so he was gone for 2 from five balls, taking his tally in all matches on this tour to 49 runs from six innings – and in each of his last four outings, including all three ODIs, he has been scalped by the same style of bowler. In the first match he edged Shakib Al Hasan to slip; in the next two games he was trapped lbw by Abdur Razzak.”He was a bit upset, he would have liked to get a score,” Tredwell told reporters at the close of play. “But we all know what KP’s like, he’s a confident character, and I’m sure he’ll come bouncing back. I’m sure Bangladesh will try to use [left-arm spin] to their advantage, but I’m sure he will come back with something else to throw at them.”Quite what Pietersen can come up with, however, is anyone’s guess, because his problems against slow left-arm are starting to become an embarrassment. He’d had his moments all throughout his career, most notably at Edgbaston in August 2008, when his attempt to mow Paul Harris out of the ground ended up with him holing out to mid-on, and sent England toppling towards a series-conceding defeat. But it turned from being an incidental issue to a real thorn in his ego during the tour of India in November 2008, when Yuvraj Singh bowled him through the gate in an otherwise unremarkable ODI defeat in Indore. One month later in the second Test at Chandigarh, Mahendra Singh Dhoni hauled Yuvraj into the attack at the very moment that Pietersen arrived at the crease. Though he escaped unscathed on that occasion, the message was clear – as Yuvraj’s earlier “bunny-ears” gesture had already made plain.Since then, his every failing against a left-armer has become a hot topic – and it is starting to make a visible dent in his statistics. Pietersen’s average in all formats against his nemeses hovers uneasily in the early 30s, compared to a solid plus-40 showing against all other varieties of bowling. And from Yuvraj (who has dismissed him four times in ODIs, more than any other bowler) to Daniel Vettori, Sulieman Benn and Harris in Tests, and now to Mehrab Hossain Jr, SLAB is intent on putting him in the mortuary.Come the Tests, Bangladesh are likely to have just the one such bowler to work on his weakness, but that man happens to be Shakib, the most fearless competitor in their line-up, and a man who will surely delight in the challenge. And of course, it is an added irony that England have not even got any left-arm bowlers of their own to enable Pietersen to hone his put-upon technique, with Monty Panesar overlooked in favour of Tredwell. Adil Rashid, who as a legspinner at least takes the ball away from bat, is not here either. But none of that is Tredwell’s immediate concern, of course. He has been selected on merit, and has done his utmost to make the most of his opportunity. “I’m certainly in contention [for a call-up],” he said. “I’ve only done the right thing. There’s less and less lead-ups going into international matches, so to actually perform in one of them is a decent thing.”I enjoy bowling with another offspinner,” he added. “It might cause problems for us if the batsmen come up with similar gameplans, but they’ve got a lot of left-handers, so that will come into our reckoning, turning the ball away from the bat.” As Pietersen will testify, such a skill really can get under a batsman’s skin.

ICC quandary over Nepal disturbances

The ICC faces a tough call when it has to decide what to do following crowd trouble in the match between Nepal and USA

Martin Williamson10-Mar-2010The ICC has dismissed criticism it was too slow to react to the crowd trouble which marred the match between Nepal and USA in Kirtipur in the ICC World Cricket League Division 5 tournament. In the immediate aftermath of the serious disturbances, Singapore lodged a complaint with the ICC, claiming they and not Nepal should have qualified for the final, and in turn promotion to Division 4 of the tournament. At the time the USA-Nepal match was suspended, Nepal were facing elimination on net run-rate (NRR), but they edged through after USA were set a revised Duckworth-Lewis target which slightly but crucially improved Nepal’s NRR and enabled them to squeeze out Singapore. The ICC was roundly attacked for its seemingly slow response, not announcing an investigation until two days after the end of the tournament, but it has told Cricinfo the process was started in the immediate aftermath of the game.An ICC spokesperson said the technical committee on duty in Nepal had followed the playing conditions and that at the time the situation regarding NRR could not have been a factor in their decision over the conclusion of the match. Furthermore, Singapore did lodge a complaint with the committee on the evening of the game but at that stage the result could not have been changed.”The ICC immediately launched an investigation into the security incident on the night of February 26 and followed all ICC protocols on the matter including the filing of report to ICC headquarters,” the spokesperson said. “The technical committee also held a meeting the evening of February 26 in regards to security for the following day’s matches.”In regards to the security issue this is being investigated externally following the Rules and Regulations of the ICC. As to the internal investigation that is now being conducted, this was instigated once the ICC Event manager and staff had returned to headquarters and completed a tournament debrief.”The next stage is the findings of the investigation will be delivered to the board who will deliberate what to do when they meet in Dubai in April.”There are two elements to what the panels can do,” the spokesperson said. “As regards the security aspect of the investigation (that goes to the external investigator/commissioner) under ICC Rules and Regulations sanctions can be imposed on a host nation, in this case Nepal, if the commissioner finds that a breach of the rules and regulations.”As regards the internal investigation, the ICC head of legal, David Becker, will no doubt make recommendations to the ICC board on the panel’s findings and these recommendations will be considered by the board.”Nepal have every reason to be worried that their on-field success allied to remarkable crowds which flocked to see them might be undermined by the behaviour of an admittedly significant number of their supporters. Singapore, meanwhile, appear to have the sympathy of many Associate countries, while the USA can rest easy as whatever the outcome, their promotion will stand. As for the ICC, it is in a difficult position. If it fails to act then there is a danger it sets a precedent for crowds to disrupt matches if doing so will benefit their side. Against that, it will not want to stamp down to heavily on a country where cricket has really taken hold.

Palace fans react to Nascimento contract

Crystal Palace confirmed on Saturday morning that youngster Adler Nascimento has signed professional terms with the club.

As to be expected, a number of Eagles fans have been reacting to the off-field news on social media.

Nascimento arrived at the club’s academy ranks over the summer from Championship side Peterborough United, where he made his professional debut at the age of 16 last May.

The Eagles reportedly forked out an initial £531,000 for his services, with the Portuguese teenager already making nine appearances for Palace’s under-18 side this season.

Nascimento has seemingly done enough to catch the eye in those games, despite starting on only three occasions, and he has penned professional terms at Selhurst Park.

Palace fans react

The Eagles’ official Twitter channel retweeted the club’s academy post regarding Nascimento’s contract on Saturday.

Here is what these Palace supporters had to say in reply, with one labelling it as ‘class news’ and another calling him an ‘absolute beast’.

The Akmal brothers, Kamran and Umar, have lodged appeals against the fines imposed on them by the PCB in the aftermath of Pakistan’s winless tour of Australia. The brothers were fined for their behaviour in the aftermath of the Sydney Test; Kamran was dropped by the board but insisted publicly he would be selected in the run-up to the third Test. Younger brother Umar was alleged to have feigned an injury to not play the Test in protest, though he did eventually play. Kamran has been fined Rs 3 million, Umar Rs 2 million and the pair are on probation for six months. The Akmals were among seven players penalised by the PCB, for various reasons; Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousuf were banned indefinitely, Shoaib Malik and Naved-ul-Hasan Rana were banned for a year, while Shahid Afridi, like the Akmals, was fined and placed on probation.”We have received their appeals in person and now it will be forwarded to an appellate tribunal,” Pakistan Cricket Board’s legal adviser Taffazul Rizvi told AP. Nicholas drops Celtic transfer claim

Charlie Nicholas has dropped a claim on Celtic’s potential business over the remainder of the January transfer window.

What’s been said?

Writing recently in the column for The Scottish Daily Express, the former Celtic centre-forward stated his belief that, despite recently missing out on the signing of Riley McGree and claiming that he has nothing currently in the pipeline regarding transfers, Ange Postecoglou is not done yet this month – particularly if the 56-year-old can cut loose a number of the Bhoys’ fringe players.

Regarding Celtic’s transfer business, the former Sky Sports pundit wrote: “Ange said last week he has nothing else in the pipeline as it stands. I still think he will do more business before the window closes, especially if he could get players out as well.”

Fans will be delighted

While it is true that Postecoglou has already secured the arrivals of four fresh faces this winter – with all of Reo Hatate, Yosuke Ideguchi, Daizen Maeda and Johnny Kenny making a move to Parkhead – considering just how much success the Greek-Australian coach has had with almost all of his signings for Celtic so far, the claim that there could yet be more additions made to the first-team squad this month is sure to have delighted Bhoys fans.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/?post_type=web-story&p=664142″ title=”Check out the latest Celtic news!”]

Indeed, since his arrival last summer, the 56-year-old has brought in the likes of Jota – who has scored eight goals and registered six assists over his 19 appearances for the club – and Kyogo Furuhashi – who has bagged 16 goals and five assists over 26 outings.

That’s as well as Cameron Carter-Vickers, Josip Juranovic and Carl Starfelt – who are averaging highly impressive SofaScore match ratings of 7.46, 7.29 and 7.28 in the Premiership respectively.

Furthermore, both Hatate and goalscorer Maeda highly impressed during their Celtic debuts in the 2-0 over Hibernian on Monday evening, with the duo looking to be yet another two signings that will massively improve the Hoops squad.

As such, considering his rather remarkable record with incoming signings, should the Bhoys’ winter business not be over yet, as Nicholas suggests, it is undoubtedly hugely exciting news for the Parkhead faithful.
