Newcastle have the opportunity to move level on points with 17th-placed Watford as they face Leicester in the Premier League today.

The Magpies skipper showed that he was able to stand up and be counted for in the relegation scrap, which is more than what could be said for Schar.

Toon legend Alan Shearer previously called the defender a “danger” due to his ability to score from the defence, but he has only scored one goal for club and country since the start of the 2020/21 campaign. This suggests that he does not carry the same threat in the present, having scored six goals in his first two Premier League seasons for the club.

In half a dozen Premier League outings this season, Schar has lost 55% of his duels and made two errors directly leading to shots at Newcastle’s goal. This, along with his worrying display against Burnley, shows that he has been a liability for the club this term and highlights why he should be axed from the starting XI.

The £8.1m-rated dud managed to get away without his dreadful performance costing Howe against Burnley, as the team still picked up the win, but there is no guarantee that he will be so lucky a second week running. So, he should be taken out of the spotlight and placed on the bench to allow another player to come in and get a chance to perform.

Ao ser questionado sobre Jair Ventura, do Botafogo, rival do Corinthians nesta segunda-feira, o comandante do Timão revelou que tem conversado com alguns técnicos brasileiros em busca “do crescimento do nosso futebol”.

– O Jair já mostrou o excelente profissional que é, chegou num mata-mata de Libertadores contra o Grêmio jogando de igual para igual. Tem dois técnicos que tenho conversado, que é o Jair e o Zé Ricardo (Vasco). Quero estreitar a amizade. Vejo que há um distanciamento entre os profissionais aqui, algo que não existe na Europa. Também estou ficando próximo do Dorival (Júnior, do São Paulo) e do Eduardo (Baptista, da Ponte Preta). Quero estreitar laços, fazer reuniões… Já está acontecendo, mas quero mais, para o crescimento do nosso futebol – afirmou Carille.

Em outra pergunta sobre a profissão, Carille recordou sua trajetória nesta temporada e lembrou de outra pessoa com quem tem conversado muito ultimamente: Muricy Ramalho, ex-técnico e hoje comentarista do SporTV.

Ouvi esses dias do Muricy, que é outra pessoa que tenho falado bastante, que o duro do futebol é o jogo. Se não fosse o jogo, o futebol seria maravilhoso para os técnicos – disse Carille.

O treinador do Corinthians ainda foi questionado sobre conversas com Tite, seu “mentor”. Desde que foi efetivado, no fim do ano passado, Carille afirma se espelhar no atual técnico da Seleção Brasileira. As conversas entre eles atualmente, porém, raramente são sobre futebol.

– Conversamos bastante, sempre deixei claro que o Tite ajudou a me formar, é meu pai no esporte. Conversamos bastante, mas não sobre futebol. Eu praticamente já sei as resposta dele, tem de viver o a dia a dia, saber quem é quem. Quando eu o encontro pessoalmente, quando ele vem para São Paulo, temos liberdade para falar mais de futebol. No telefone, falamos sobre outras coisas – declarou o treinador corintiano.

Carille chegou ao Corinthians em 2009, para ser auxiliar da comissão fixa do clube. Após terminar o ano como técnico interino, ele foi efetivado no comando da equipe em dezembro. A section of Newcastle fans were found partying outside St James’ Park when PIF officially completed their takeover of the club from Mike Ashley.

Supporters were then given another reason to rejoice as the club decided to take down the Sports Direct signage from the ground this week, removing sizeable reminders of the much-maligned former owner.

However, it will take longer to reshape the dysfunctional playing squad he created, with the Magpies currently sitting 19th in the Premier League table.

Transfer howler

One signing with whom the Sports Direct mogul had a complete howler was the addition of Emil Krafth from Ligue 1 side Amiens in the summer of 2019.

Ashley reportedly sanctioned a £5m transfer fee for the right-back. The defender signed a four-year, initial £32k-per-week, deal at St James’ Park, which went up to £37k-per-week this term. This means that he earned £1.6m per season in his first two years at the club and is set to earn £1.9m by the end of the 2021/22 campaign.

He averaged a dismal WhoScored rating of 6.30 in the Premier League in 17 games in his first season on Tyneside. He then recorded an average score of 6.47 in 16 games in 2020/21 and is currently averaging a rating of 6.23 this term, having started five games and made one more appearance as a substitute.

In terms of WhoScored ratings, he has ranked 19th (current), 16th (2020/21) and 24th (2019/20) in the Magpies squad in his two-and-a-half seasons at the club to date. This highlights how he has never been able to consistently perform to a good enough standard under Steve Bruce or Eddie Howe.

Former Arsenal forward Ian Wright previously claimed that the Sweden international was ‘out of his depth’ under Bruce last year, saying: “I thought Krafth was way too out of his depth there, playing in that position. Steve Bruce, with the players that he’s got and how it’s going, they’re doing the best that they could but the mistakes cost them.”

At the time of writing (11/12/21), Transfermarkt value him at just £3.15m – a drop-off from the £5m Newcastle paid for him just two years ago. This shows that he has been a disaster of a signing both in terms of his on-pitch performances and from the financial aspect of the deal, as his current valuation suggests that the club would have to take a loss on him if they decided to sell.

Therefore, Ashley had a howler with the signing of Krafth in 2019, and the defender is just one example of the remaining issues from the former owner’s tenure that PIF will need to fix in the coming weeks, months and years.

Mashrafe Mortaza has been named as Bangladesh captain for next month’s home tri-series featuring Sri Lanka and India. The BCB’s board of directors, who convened in Mirpur today, said the fast bowler would also lead the side during the home Test series against India which follows.Mortaza, who picked up an injury in the West Indies soon after taking over as captain from Mohammad Ashraful, missed the home ODIs against Zimbabwe in October-November after failing to recover in time from a knee surgery. Shakib Al Hasan, who led the team in his absence, has been named as vice-captain.”A selection from the 26-member squad of the preliminary national team camp will play a practice one-day match against Mohammedan Sporting Club at the Shere Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Saturday, December 26, 2009,” a release from the BCB said.The tri-series begins in Dhaka on January 4 and will be followed by two Tests against India at Chittagong (January 17-21) and Dhaka (January 24-28).The contracts of 13 national team players have also been renewed till November 30 next year. Newcastle United were beaten comfortably by Manchester City on Sunday as Eddie Howe’s team lost 4-0 to the league leaders.

Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo, Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling scored the goals for the away side as the Magpies struggled to keep the Cityzens at bay.

The Magpies had a penalty shout in the first half after Ederson swept Ryan Fraser off his feet after Cancelo walked away with the ball, but the referee and VAR did not deem it worthy of a spot-kick.

Forget Clark

Ciaran Clark may receive flak for his mistake in letting the ball go over him for Dias’ header, but another player in the back four was shocking on Sunday – Matt Ritchie.

The Scottish full-back came in for the injured Jamal Lewis and did not do enough to make the Northern Ireland international worry about winning his place back. Ritchie was handed the opportunity to show that he deserves to be the first-choice left-back in the side moving forward and failed to grasp his chance.

Defensively, he was shocking. As per SofaScore, he lost three of his four duels on the pitch as he made just one tackle in his 90 minutes on the pitch. He was also dribbled past a whopping three times, compared to Jacob Murphy’s zero at right-back, which shows that he was far too easily beaten by City players when they had the ball at their feet.

Ritchie also failed to switch on at the back post for the fourth goal as Sterling snuck ahead of him to tap the ball into an empty net from Gabriel Jesus’ low cross. He did not anticipate the danger and proactively look to stop the forward from getting into the six-yard box and this led to him being caught on his heels as the England international found himself with a tap-in.

On the ball, he did very little. As per SofaScore, he lost possession 13 times from 44 touches, whilst he also failed with all five of his attempted crosses. He did not create a single chance from full-back or attempt a dribble, showing that he did not make up for his weak defending with attacking quality.

Therefore, the £44k-per-week liability was shocking as he was poor at both ends of the pitch. Howe will surely be disappointed with his display and may potentially be praying that Lewis is back sooner rather than later in that position.
