Konur backs exciting West Ham development…

Taking to Twitter, Fichajes reporter Ekrem Konur has now backed an exciting West Ham United development involving defender Vladimir Coufal.

The Lowdown: Big news on Coufal emerges…

Near the end of last week, some major news emerged out of Rush Green on the Czech Republic international’s east London future.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-developments/” title=”West Ham developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, as first reported by journalist Roshane Thomas of The Athletic, the 29-year-old has now reportedly put pen to paper on a new deal at West Ham – becoming the first in a long line of players rumoured to be the subject of fresh terms.

This comes after there was an original delay in negotiations due to Coufal allegedly being unsatisfied with the club’s intial offer (Sky Sports).

The Latest: Konur backs Coufal development…

Now, taking to social media, Turkish reporter Konur has backed this exciting Coufal news out of West Ham whilst also sharing what he’s heard on the length of the deal.

The right back will apparently extend his current deal for another four years, coming after a fantastic debut season at the London  Stadium last year.

“West Ham will extend Vladimir Coufal’s contract until 2025,” Konur explained on Twitter.

The Verdict: Big boost for West Ham…

Lauded as ‘unbelievable’ and a ‘machine’ by club legend Mark Noble, it’s safe to say Coufal penning a new deal will come as a major boost.

Playing his way into the hearts of West Ham supporters, quickly becoming a favourite, he impressively made the joint-most tackles per 90 in the Premier League for Moyes’ side over 2020/2021 (WhoScored).

It’s certainly safe to say that Irons supporters will be overjoyed to see him tied down.

Collingwood and Prior guide England's fortunes

Paul Collingwood converted his ninth Test century into an imposing 161 and Matt Prior celebrated the birth of his first child with a hundred of his own, as England took advantage of West Indies’ outrageously negative tactics

The Bulletin by Andrew Miller07-Mar-2009 West Indies 92 for 1 (Gayle 49*, Powell 0*) trail England 546 for 6 (Collingwood 161, Strauss 142, Prior 131*) by 454 runs

Paul Collingwood converted his ninth Test century into an imposing 161 and Matt Prior celebrated the birth of his first child with a hundred of his own, as England took advantage of West Indies’ outrageously negative tactics to post a commanding 546 for 6 declared in the fifth and final Test in Trinidad. Nevertheless, by the close of the second day, England were themselves struggling to make inroads on a grimly unresponsive surface. West Indies reached 92 for 1 in 19 overs, with Chris Gayle cruising on 49 not out, and are now just three days away from securing their first series win in almost five years. While the bowling tactics employed by West Indies were understandable and may yet be justified by hindsight, they made nonetheless for grim and soulless viewing. Aside from a 45-minute burst in the morning session, in which Fidel Edwards cranked up his pace to dismiss Andrew Strauss for 142, there was no disguising the disdain for the match situation. Gayle merely spread his fielders to the four corners and relied on a medley of part-time spinners and medium-pacers to grind through the overs. Ironically, as soon as he did turn back to one of his front-line men, Lionel Baker, ten minutes before tea with the score already approaching 500, a wicket followed two balls later. Collingwood, with his sights set on a second double-century, was struck on the back pad and sent on his way, via a referral. But that was immaterial, as wickets were of next to no consequence to West Indies, for whom the bulk of the workload was carried by the plop-it-on-a-length left-arm spin of Ryan Hinds. He toiled through a further 19.5 overs in the day, most of them in an exasperating post-lunch session, but could not add to first-day wicket of Kevin Pietersen. Gayle’s right-arm darts were also utilised to the max, and there were maiden international overs for both Lendl Simmons and the excreable Devon Smith, whose six hideous deliveries were among the most inept ever seen in Test cricket. Still, Collingwood and Prior could do little but accept the offerings that came their way, and they did so to full effect in a fifth-wicket stand of 218 in 53.3 overs. The pair came together in the first hour at 268 for 4 following the swift demises of both Strauss and Owais Shah, who ran himself out for 33, only three balls after resuming the innings he had aborted on the first afternoon. With Prior pushed up to No. 6 to accommodate the extra bowler, West Indies briefly sensed that their opportunity was knocking. But they were swiftly knocked back by a fine counter-punching performance. Never afraid to put bat to ball when offered sufficient width, Prior peppered the arc between cover and third man with a selection of juicy cuts and drives. He struck five fours in his first 24 runs, a flurry that – ironically – set the tone for what followed. At the other end, Collingwood was his typical steady self. Less flamboyant than his partner, but no less effective, he picked off the bulk of his runs with clips and pulls into the leg side. He took his time to get going, which he eventually did by middling an Edwards short ball through midwicket, but by the time Gayle ordered his team into a full retreat, he was in full flow. Two fours in consecutive overs from the innocuous Brendan Nash rushed him through the nineties, and he coolly chiselled a leg-stump delivery round the corner to bring up his fourth hundred in his last 12 innings for England.Midway through the afternoon session, Collingwood converted his hundred into a 150, while Prior dedicated his second Test century to his new baby Johnny (probably because it had helped send the infant to sleep). By that stage, only their nearest and dearest cared any longer. Eight bowlers were used in all, not including the barely mobile Shivnarine Chanderpaul, and the three frontline men – Edwards, Baker and the ever-maligned Daren Powell – were outbowled 63 overs to 89 by the dibbly-dobbly-wobbly trio of Nash, Gayle and Hinds.West Indies did at least show a modicum of intent at the beginning and end of their day’s fielding. Strauss, who resumed on 139 not out, added only three runs in the morning before stepping across his stumps to be bowled around his legs by Edwards, while Shah – back in the middle after a painful attack of cramp – squandered his opportunity with a suicidal single to the fit-again substitute, Dwayne Bravo, at midwicket. And then, at the opposite extreme, there was Baker, who went wicketless in his only previous Test in Dunedin earlier this year, but finally opened his account with two late strikes – first Collingwood for 161, then Stuart Broad, who slogged a length ball to long-off shortly before the declaration. But, when an arduous day finally came to a close, Gayle might have been justified in shrugging “I told you so” to his many detractors. England rotated all their resources, including the debutant Amjad Khan who overstepped three times in a nervy first over, and they wasted both of their referrals as well, but could not find a way through Gayle’s broad and blazing blade.Gayle was one away from his half-century at the close, having slammed Graeme Swann for two sixes in his first over and Monty Panesar for first-ball four through the covers. Panesar did strike in his penultimate over of the day when Devon Smith played down the wrong line and was bowled, but with Ramnaresh Sarwan still waiting to make his appearance, West Indies ended the day confident that whatever their means to an end may be, that end will justify all that has gone before it.

West Ham linked to Alexis Sanchez

West Ham United could secure their next Carlos Tevez over the coming months after being linked with a move for Inter forward Alexis Sanchez.

What’s the story?

According to Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb (as relayed by SportWitness), the Hammers are eager to bring the 32-year-old back to English shores, although they’re set to face competition from Marseille and interest from Spain.

The report states that: “The Chilean striker is playing little and the idea of a goodbye also in January is taking shape. Marseille and West Ham have tested the waters, but in the end, some opportunities could also arise in Spain.”

Sanchez’s current contract at San Siro doesn’t expire until the summer of 2023, but the reigning Serie A champions are eager to get the versatile attacker off their books due to his high wages.

West Ham’s next Carlos Tevez

West Ham’s history is littered with top-class stars who have either fired their club or country to glory throughout their career while entertaining the masses in the process.

However, the last South American do to so in a claret and blue shirt was arguably Carlos Tevez during the 2006/07 season.

After a tricky start to life in the English top-flight, the Argentine bagged an incredible seven goals and provided a further four assists in the east London outfit’s final ten league games of the campaign, firing Alan Curbishley’s charges to safety in dramatic fashion.

The likes of Felipe Andersen, Manuel Lanzini and Enner Valencia have attempted to replicate Tevez’s influence since, although none have come close to making as big an impact as the stocky forward.

That could be about to change following speculation regarding Sanchez’s potential imminent arrival at the London Stadium, though.

During his three-and-a-half-year stay at Arsenal, the £130k-per-week Chile international bagged 80 goals and provided 45 assists in 166 appearances for the Gunners, winning the FA Cup twice along the way.

His outstanding performances at the Emirates Stadium caught the eye of several impressed onlookers, including Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.

“He is a player that can play in several positions: left, right, central. He is a fighter with character and spirit, and he is a winner,” said Guardiola back in 2016. “He is a class, class player, but now I think he is playing really well. With Chile he has won two South American cups, that shows what a good player he is.”

Things have not quite worked out for Sanchez since leaving north London, though. Spells at Manchester United and Inter have failed to bring out the best in the £6.75m-rated beast, but West Ham manager David Moyes could be the ideal man to revive his career.

The Scotsman has already brought out the best of ageing players such as Craig Dawson and Michail Antonio, and therefore, GSB must back their manager to do the same with a potential superstar in the shape of Sanchez.

Sunderland: Johnson must unleash McGeady

Sunderland continued their march towards Championship promotion with a 2-1 win away at Gillingham in League One at the weekend.

Tom Flanagan and Aiden O’Brien scored the goals for the Black Cats, with Lee Johnson’s side now sitting one point off the top of the table and with games in-hand over first and second.

However, Johnson has a decision to make heading into their clash with Crewe Alexandra on Tuesday night as Elliot Embleton was shown a straight red card against Gillingham.

This means that Sunderland must bring in another wide player to cover for him in this clash. With Irish winger Aiden McGeady returning to fitness, Johnson must unleash the ex-Celtic flyer and hand him a start as part of the front four.

If he is fit enough to play, McGeady could fill in for Embleton and provide a useful outlet out wide to help Sunderland win another game as they attempt to rise back to the top of the League One table.

The forward has proven that he can be an outstanding player in the third tier. Speaking after a game in 2019, former Sunderland boss Jack Ross hailed the “special quality” of McGeady. He told Chronicle Live:

“I thought he was bright today. He is the type of player who responds well to other players coming into the club and the challenge of proving the quality he has.

“In the first half I thought we were too short and too narrow in terms of how we made the pitch, so in the second half we widened and lengthened it a bit and that’s where the goal comes from. You had the execution of the pass from Grant [Leadbitter], but then you need that bit of special quality and Aiden has done that a lot for us this season.”

This highlights the level of ability the £19k-per-week wizard is able to provide Sunderland at this level. His statistics for the club speak for themselves; 21 goals and 24 assists in three League One campaigns in red and white. He has the magical spark required to open up a game and that is why he should replace Embleton in the team.

McGeady has proven that he can score and assist goals on a regular basis and Ross Stewart could potentially thrive on the service he is able to provide. The Scottish striker has scored seven goals in 11 games and could add to that tally by getting on the end of McGeady’s crosses.
