Andrew Symonds will learn of his fate at a code of behaviour hearing in Melbourne on Thursday after being reported by Cricket Australia for his comments about the New Zealand player Brendon McCullum. Symonds could face a fine or suspension over a radio interview in which he called the New Zealand player Brendon McCullum “a lump of s…”.”Given the importance of the tribunal hearing, it would be inappropriate to comment on the issue now a report has been made,” Michael Brown, the acting chief executive of Cricket Australia, said on Tuesday. “Once the outcome of this hearing is finalised, Cricket Australia will be in a better position to assess issues relating to Andrew Symonds.”The controversial radio interview is the latest in a long line of off-field dramas involving Symonds. In the past six months alone he was axed from the national squad in Darwin for going on a fishing trip, undertook a rehabilitation programme, and then became involved in a bar-room incident after his Test comeback in Brisbane.Symonds is currently preparing for his Sheffield Shield comeback on Friday after having knee surgery earlier this month. His Queensland coach Trevor Barsby said the state squad would offer him whatever support was required but that ultimately it was up to Symonds to understand the consequences of his behaviour.”He is a big boy so he must realise that he has to take control of his own destiny,” Barsby said in the . “He has the full support of current and former players – and a direct line to some counsellors – but at the end of the day the buck stops with him.”We can help him as much as possible but we can’t babysit him. Roy needs to choose to do something about things and take ownership. He is a grown man and he’s got to be aware of the consequences of his actions.”Symonds apologised for the McCullum comments and said he was trying to go along with the light-hearted nature of Roy and HG’s radio show. He won the support of his former Queensland captain Jimmy Maher, who said the media reaction to the radio interview was over the top.”I just think we are getting a bit precious aren’t we? You’d swear he’d murdered someone the way some people are carrying on,” Maher told the . “It’s not that big a deal. He came out and apologised. anyway, it was a light-hearted radio gig. Roy and HG say those sort of things all the time, that’s the flavour of the show, it’s a bit of carry-on and he hasn’t meant anything by it.”

West Ham fans excited about statue of trio

A number of West Ham fans are excited about the unveiling of a statue paying respect to legendary Hammers trio Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters.

David Moyes’ side have made an excellent start to the season, taking last year’s form with them and looking like one of the best teams outside of the traditional ‘big six’.

Not only are the Hammers impressing in the Premier League, but they are also doing well in the Europa League, winning 2-0 away to Dinamo Zagreb on Thursday night.

The hope is that this current crop become legendary figures over time, but they may struggle to ever reach the heights of Moore, Hurst and Peters.

The trio were colossal for West Ham and it has been confirmed on the club’s official Twitter account that their statue will be unveiled at the London Stadium ahead of their clash with Rapid Vienna on September 30th, with the 1965 European Cup Winners’ Cup triumph also remembered.

The game is back and it is on

A fine series is set up. Pakistan will battle, if only because they have hardly played. Sri Lanka will be formidable hurdles to overcome

Finally, we return to the cricket. Dubai, doping, security, isolation, political and financial jiggery-pokery can all at long last be fully damned and forgotten for a while. On Tuesday, eleven plays eleven, on a 22-yard brown strip, in a big field, a ball and bat the utensils. We forget sometimes that, really, it is a simple and beautiful game.As much as the elements, the line-ups, key performers and whatnot, rust and possible decay will be on the minds of Pakistan as they take on Sri Lanka. The two last met during the 2008 Asia Cup, in what seems another age. Since that meeting, Pakistan have played five ODIs against their opponents’ 15. It is a staggering statistic. Where young men such as Ajantha Mendis have blossomed, young men such as Sohail Tanvir have not really had a chance to do much at all.Sri Lanka come into the series primed, toughened and wary after a character-testing tour of Bangladesh. Pakistan are looser, altogether less coherent and with little practice other than domestic cricket behind them. It will make a difference even if conditions are Pakistan’s. “The one edge I would give Sri Lanka is that they have played more than us,” said Shoaib Malik. “They have been playing regularly and that gives them an advantage but we are at home.”It makes sense, then, that in such uncertain times Pakistan go back to what they know best: pace. Talk leading up to this has been of fast, bouncy pitches and Malik admitted, having looked at the surface yesterday, that he had considered going in with four fast bowlers. He wasn’t so sure after a second look today, but given that there is only one specialist spinner in the squad, pace will be the way.So, it was sadly predictable that Shoaib Akhtar would take some of the focus. Once Malik had added the caveat “if he plays” to some obligatory praise (“He is an asset”), reporters started sniffing. Will he play, Malik was repeatedly, perhaps unfairly, asked. No definitive response came, but it shouldn’t be a surprise whichever way.Pakistan may punt on a man who hasn’t played an ODI in over a year, or they may stick to the three men who did so well in Abu Dhabi, Umar Gul, Sohail Tanvir and Rao Iftikhar Anjum. Will Sri Lanka care that much? When you have such a potent spin attack of your own – the best according to Malik – the opposition matters less than it should. Pakistan have thought long and hard about Mendis and Muttiah Muralitharan. Malik reckons Pakistan have played Mendis better than most teams but that is an assessment based on only 14 international overs. And Mendis has taken seven wickets even then.Shahid Afridi reached the ground before any of his colleagues today and practised against a bowler from 15 yards, before asking a local to come at him with Murali’s action. Pakistan’s batsmen have done similar over the last couple of days. The pitfall of such targeted preparation – and Mahela Jayawardene is too canny to not know it – is that it often allows someone less heralded to sneak through. Spin may be in the air, but Sri Lanka’s pace reserves are nothing if not healthy. You’d think that missing Chaminda Vaas, Dammika Prasad and Lasith Malinga is a bum deal, but you might think again if you knew that Farvez Maharoof, Dilhara Fernando and Nuwan Kulasekara are around instead. If pitches do really help the fast men in this series, then these aren’t bad men to take advantage of it. Two very good bowlers, Jayawardene said when he arrived, “but we have other very good ones as well.” If their batting clicks – as it hasn’t since the Asia Cup – then there really aren’t many better-equipped ODI sides around. Thus, a fine series is set. Pakistan will battle, if only because they have hardly played. Sri Lanka will be formidable hurdles to overcome. But as Karachi’s National Stadium finally buzzed into life and officials, press, groundstaff busily went about pre-match rituals, thoughts of a result weren’t so important. The game is back and it is on.

Gayle confident team can pull off series win

A win here and West Indies will regain the Wisden Trophy for the first time since letting it slip away in 2000

Andrew McGlashan in Bridgetown 25-Feb-2009
Chris Gayle: “Winning this series would be tremendous for us” © AFP
How the worm has turned. On England’s last visit to this ground in 2004, Chris Gayle was bowled by Steve Harmison late on the second day after he had thrashed three typically aggressive boundaries. It was an impetuous innings which didn’t serve his team well and a day later West Indies were staring at a thumping eight-wicket defeat.Five years on and a far more mature Gayle leads a West Indies team that holds a 1-0 lead in the current series. A win here and they will regain the Wisden Trophy for the first time since letting it slip away in 2000. Since the time they relinquished the prize, with a defeat at The Oval, they have barely challenged England – until this tour.”We are in a position to turn it around, just like in the first Test in Jamaica and hopefully it can be the same here in Barbados,” Gayle said. “Hopefully we can put up a good fight after the last Test. We aren’t accustomed to being in these positions over the last few years and we need to try and build on this. Take it session by session and the first day of any game is very important.”The positives vibes in the West Indies camp would have been very different if one more wicket had fallen in Antigua. They were a distant second best for most of the game and Gayle admitted they need to move on.”The disaster at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium changed things and the switch to the ARG put us on the back foot,” he said. “It wasn’t to our advantage. But we are still 1-0 up and need to move into this game. We have to come out and hit the ground running. In the last game we were at bit flat, that’s true, so this time around we need to be positive. This game can determine the series.”West Indies have shown faith in the same squad from Antigua although there is pressure to make changes. Devon Smith has underperformed as opener and in the middle order, while the returns have been low with the ball for Daren Powell, who was their batting saviour in Antigua. Gayle, though, is eager to bring some stability to the team.”We don’t just want to chop and change,” he said. “These guys have experience, but it’s good to go into a selection meeting and have some tough questions. Lendl Simmons has been in terrific form and Lionel Baker has picked up wickets, but it’s about coming up with the right formula and not trying to change things too much.”Yesterday, coach John Dyson said he wanted the team to use the massive travelling England support as motivation and Gayle agreed it would be nice to see some more locals turn out. “We can look at it as though we are playing at Lord’s. We saw a similar thing in Antigua as well. It would be nice to have some local supporters in the arena as well but it seems like it is turning into a business. That is out of our hands, we just have to concentrate on things in the middle.”After a period in the 1980s and 90s where West Indies didn’t let go of the Wisden Trophy, the last decade has been all about England domination. For this West Indies side to turn that run around would be a significant feather in the cap of captain and coach. “It would be a turning point,” Gayle said, “but it’s a long corner to turn and we still have two more games to go.”Winning this series would be tremendous for us. Playing against England is always a big fight and the challenge is always there. There’s no doubt at all; we can pull it off.”

Leeds: Adam Forshaw suffers injury setback

Leeds United midfielder Adam Forshaw has suffered yet another injury setback, with Marcelo Bielsa confirming as much after the defeat to West Ham on Saturday.

The Lowdown: Leeds lose again

The Whites’ hugely disappointing start to the season continued on Saturday afternoon following a 2-1 loss to the Hammers at Elland Road.

Raphinha may have given Leeds the lead before half-time, but the visitors turned the game around, leaving Bielsa’s men without a Premier League win in 2021/22 after six matchdays.

The Latest: Forshaw suffers fresh injury setback

Forshaw played no part in proceedings, and as tweeted by journalist Graham Smyth, Bielsa confirmed after the weekend defeat that the midfielder faces another spell on the sidelines:

“Marcelo Bielsa says Adam Forshaw has a ‘tear in the posterior part of his thigh.’ Would usually mean a month out, says Bielsa, but adds that Forshaw’s two year absence makes it difficult.”

The Verdict: Another cruel blow

This is another major setback for Forshaw, who has had such terrible luck in the injury department, barely playing at all for the last two years because of a serious hip injury.

There must now be genuine question marks over the 29-year-old’s future, with his body clearly struggling to cope with the challenges of being a professional footballer.

It is hard to see him ever properly breaking into Leeds’ team again and another long layoff would only weaken his case even further.

In other news, some Leeds fans were critical of one player against West Ham. Find out who it is here.
