Celtic: Hoops links to Robbie Brady resurface

Celtic have once again been linked with a move for free agent Robbie Brady, with Ange Postecoglou quizzed on the Irishman on Thursday evening, The Scotsman report.

The Lowdown: Previous Brady links

The Hoops were linked with a summer move for the 29-year-old back in February when Neil Lennon was still in charge at Celtic Park.

Reports then suggested that Celtic actually wanted Brady in the summer of 2020 before he penned a one-year extension at Burnley.

The left midfielder’s release from Turf Moor was confirmed back in May, which once again led to rumours of a move to Glasgow.

Brady, who was once hailed by Roy Keane, has scored 35 goals during his professional career and is still without a club.

The Latest: Postecoglou quizzed

Postecoglou spoke to the media following Celtic’s 3-0 win over Jablonec on Thursday evening and was asked about transfers.

The Hoops boss was asked specifically about Brady, reported by The Scotsman, to which he said:

“I haven’t talked specifically about him. Nothing’s really happened yet where I can say that someone has signed for me.”

The Verdict: Sign?

Celtic have already brought one experienced free agent to the club in James McCarthy, so bringing another in Brady could be a shrewd move.

Keane hailed Brady’s set-piece delivery for Ireland back in 2017, and the 29-year-old could also provide cover for Postecoglou at left-back.

He has 160 games of Premier League experience to his name, along with 57 caps for his country, so you’d expect he’ll be able to find a new club relatively soon.

Celtic want another winger this summer, and although Brady’s primary position is a left-midfielder and not a winger, he could be a smart signing with his experience, versatility and dead-ball quality.

Jesse Ryder has promised to repay the faith of the New Zealand selectors after he was chosen in the Test squad to tour Bangladesh. Ryder is likely to make his Test debut on the trip after playing his initial ODIs in February, the same month that he severely injured his right hand when he punched a bar-room window in a late-night incident in Christchurch. The long recovery meant he was unavailable for New Zealand’s tour of England and Ryder instead had to work his way back into contention via an Emerging Players Tournament in Australia. The selectors were impressed with his efforts as he captained the New Zealand side to the title, and Ryder said he was “stoked” to be back in the senior squad.”There definitely can be no more stuff-ups otherwise I’m gone,” Ryder told the . “I’m stoked they have shown faith in me so it is good to be back in there and hopefully I can establish my spot now.”Ryder said there would be no chance he would touch alcohol during the Bangladesh tour. “There will be nothing, I won’t be [drinking],” he said. “I’ll stick to what has been sorted for me by my support crew. Just one day at a time.”Ryder is likely to slot straight into the Test top order with James Marshall and Peter Fulton both overlooked for Bangladesh, having made the trip to England. Ryder was originally named in the ODI squad for England but his hand needed more recovery time, although he is certain it is now right.”The hand was fine through that [the Emerging Players Tournament], I didn’t have any problems,” he said. “I’m not feeling anything at all, apart from the odd bit of stiffness. There were no problems fielding in Australia.”

Leeds United eyeing QPR’s Rob Dickie

Leeds United are eyeing a late transfer move for QPR centre-back Rob Dickie in this summer window.

What’s the story?

The Whites have had a fairly quiet transfer window in terms of real first-team signings, with Junior Firpo joining from Barcelona and Jack Harrison seeing his move from Manchester City finally made permanent.

Bielsa himself recently indicated that business at Leeds is likely to be done now, but it appears that the Yorkshire club might have one last ace up their sleeve.

According to Football Insider, Leeds are locked in a transfer battle with fellow Premier League club Wolves over QPR’s Dickie and have been closely monitoring his situation over these last couple of weeks. The report adds that they are weighing up a move for the 6 foot 2 titan along with Newcastle as well.

Perfect for Marcelo Bielsa

The 25-year-old has enjoyed a superb start to the Championship this season, helping his team to keep one clean sheet, as well as averaging an impressive 1.3 interceptions, 1.3 tackles and three clearances and winning a mammoth nine duels per game.

The man who Ryan Dilks dubbed an “unbelievable” player has also had his moments going forward, having already netted two goals so far this term.

During his time with Oxford United, Dickie was heavily praised by manager Karl Robinson, who said: “I know he’s quick, I know he’s talented, I know he’s great in the air, but I need to see what he’s like when he’s on the floor and see how he stands up. In the second half, I thought Rob Dickie was magnificent.”

As well as that surprising pace for a player of his size, the centre-back is equally comfortable on the ball and playing through the lines, and that’s exactly what Bielsa will love about him.

As per Sofascore, he averages 34.3 passes per game for QPR, at an accuracy of 77%, and boasts a pretty impressive rate of finding his teammates when it comes to his longer passes, making 47% of them.

With fitness concerns persisting over last summer’s signing Diego Llorente, a move for Dickie – a player who knows the English game very well – could be the kind of shrewd acquisition with which Bielsa will firmly agree.

Meanwhile, Phil Hay has confirmed a major Leeds United boost…

Ponting 'comfortable' touring India

Ricky Ponting says Australia’s players will be kept abreast of the security situation in India “daily, if not hourly” as they prepare to depart for their Test tour on Sunday

Ricky Ponting says Australia’s players will be kept abreast of the security situation in India “daily, if not hourly” as they prepare to depart for their Test tour on Sunday. The trip is expected to go ahead as planned despite last Saturday’s series of bomb blasts that killed more than 20 people in New Delhi, although Ponting said Cricket Australia would stay on top of any new developments.”Anything could happen tomorrow, things change very quickly in the world right at the moment,” Ponting told . “Cricket Australia will continue to be in touch and the government will continue to be in touch and Cricket Australia will keep us players and the players’ association in the loop on a daily, if not hourly basis.”Ponting was speaking at Parliament House in Canberra, where he was promoting Cricket Australia’s new in2Cricket game for children and also met with the foreign affairs minister Stephen Smith. Ponting defended the decision to visit India but not Pakistan, where security concerns led to Australia cancelling a Test tour scheduled for earlier this year.”As we all know and has been outlined already, these are very different circumstances between India and Pakistan right at the moment and Cricket Australia has made that very clear,” Ponting said. “As captain of the side and as a player, right at the moment I am very comfortable to go on the advice of Cricket Australia and the players’ association.”Michael Brown, the general manager of cricket for Cricket Australia, rejected the suggestion that Australia would only go ahead with the tour for monetary reasons or to placate the powerful BCCI. “The only reasons we can’t play and participate,” Brown said, “is for security reasons and we’ll keep monitoring those as time goes by.”Cricket Australia has said that the government’s foreign relations with Pakistan and India play a part in the decision-making process. Australia’s consulates in Karachi and Lahore have been closed due to security concerns, while they remain open in India. However, the former Test player Dean Jones has slammed Cricket Australia for what he believes is a double-standard. Jones is now the executive director of the Indian Cricket League and he said while the situations in the two countries were different, Australian officials were clearly in a bind.”The reason why this is such a headache for Australia is that it can’t afford to take a stand on player safety in India,” Jones wrote in the . “I speak from quite a bit of experience in regards to India. My next trip will be my 91st.”And there is reason to be concerned about security there, particularly in Dehli, where the latest bomb went off. Through my role as an executive director of the Indian Cricket League, I know we have major headaches with security there.”

Pundit warns Tottenham to be smart in the transfer window

Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge has told The Transfer Tavern that Tottenham simply cannot afford to repeat some of their previous transfer mistakes.

With less than seven days left of the window, Nuno Espirito Santo has signed just three players, and with Pierluigi Gollini and Cristian Romero both on loan, they’ve technically only spent £22.5m on 20-year-old Bryan Gil from Sevilla.

However, despite making a perfect start to the Premier League season following wins over Man City and Wolves, Santo is still desperately looking to add to his squad.

Adama Traore is on Tottenham’s radar according to Telegraph, although they’ve already seen a loan bid rejected, whilst Santo wants another defensive player, with Serge Aurier and Moussa Sissoko both expected to depart.

But with Spurs having a history of wasting money in the market, with only a handful of their record arrivals list proving a success, Bridge has warned the north Londoners to be smart with their business.

He told The Transfer Tavern:

“You look at Sanchez for £40m. Him and Ndombele have cost £100m on those two players alone. When Tottenham say they haven’t spent, they have, they’ve just done it so badly.

“And Tottenham can’t afford to spend badly. City can buy four centre-backs and get it wrong every time, Tottenham cannot do that.”

West Ham fans love Tagliafico transfer news

Many West Ham United fans are delighted after it was revealed the club have agreed a fee to sign Nicolas Tagliafico from Ajax before the end of the transfer window.

The Hammers have taken far too long to get their business done this summer. Until just a couple of days ago, Alphonse Areola had been the only new arrival at the London Stadium. However, they did capture the services of Kurt Zouma from Chelsea (whufc.com), and it seems that Nikola Vlasic (Sky Sports) could also soon be on his way to London.

It appears that the Irons aren’t done there, either. As per journalist Mike Verweij, David Moyes and co have agreed a fee of €12m (£10.3m) for Nicolas Tagliafico. The Argentina international has made 141 appearances for the Ajax since making the switch from Independiente in his homeland (Transfermarkt) and featured prominently in the Amsterdam outfit’s run to the Champions League semi-finals in 2019.

The news has been doing the rounds on Twitter, and it has attracted plenty of attention from West Ham supporters. These fans took to the social media platform to share their thoughts on the prospects of the 28-year-old coming to east London, with one describing it as a “masterclass” from club co-owner David Sullivan.
