Hayden, Hussey to miss tour game for Champions League – IPL

Matthew Hayden and Michael Hussey, Australia’s key batsmen, will drop out of a pre-Test series practice match in India and instead play for Chennai Super Kings

Matthew Hayden and Michael Hussey, Australia’s key batsmen, will miss the pre-Test series practice match – if selected in the Test squad for the India tour – to instead play for Chennai Super Kings, their Indian Premier League team, in the Champions League, claimed IS Bindra, a member of the IPL governing council.Bindra also confirmed the Champions League will be held in India during the 10-day window after the Champions Trophy, which ends in Lahore on September 28, and before the first Test between India and Australia starting October 9. Admitting this would lead to a clash with Australia’s scheduled visit to India starting September 29, especially a tour game from October 2 to 5, Bindra told Cricinfo, “Hussey and Hayden, the two key players facing a clash of dates, will play for the Chennai team.”Chennai finished second behind Shane Warne-led Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, and both have qualified for the Champions League involving the top two Twenty20 teams from four countries. However Cricket Australia spokesman Peter Young said the board was keen that international duties take precedence. “The IPL always agreed with that,” Young told . “The situation is moving very quickly and I don’t think there will be any clarity until all the parties get together and work out what the dates are, and who’s doing what, where and when. But there’s too much uncertainty and we don’t want to create expectations that might not be delivered.”Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman, has previously told Cricinfo that IPL franchises would get first priority over players for the Champions League but will have to pay a fee to the player’s state team if both have qualified for the event. In the case of Hussey, who is caught between Western Australia and Chennai , Modi had said, that “Chennai has the option to keep him and pay a relieving fees to Western Australia”.Although Cricket Australia is finalising the rules for the Champions League, Bindra said it is likely to be a single-leg tournament spread over eight to nine days. Apparently, Mohali has emerged as a strong contender to stage the event as it is just a short flight away from Lahore where the Champions Trophy winds up.

Sunderland dealt blow in Jebbison pursuit

Sunderland have been dealt a major blow in their bid to bring Daniel Jebbison to the Stadium of Light this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Sun, who claim that Sheffield United are now considering the possibility of sending the centre-forward to Belgium, with Jupiler Pro League side Beerschot thought to be interested in the 18-year-old.

The report goes on to state that the Black Cats are still hopeful of clinching a deal for the England U18 international, although it is now thought that the Blades coaching team feels that a move abroad would benefit the youngster more than a move to the Stadium of Light.

Finally, it is claimed that Doncaster Rovers and Burton Albion are also interested in a loan deal for Jebbison, although the fight for the striker’s signature is said to primarily be between Sunderland and Beerschot.

Louis-Dreyfus will be fuming

Considering just how close it appeared Sunderland were to landing the signing of the Sheffield United centre-forward this summer, with the player being in attendance for the club’s final pre-season fixture against Hull City, should Jebbison indeed secure a move to Belgium rather than linking up with Lee Johnson’s side, it would undoubtedly leave Kyril Louis-Dreyfus fuming.

Indeed, while the 18-year-old does not exactly boast a wealth of experience in the EFL – or in any division, for that matter – he would nevertheless appear to be something of a coup for the Mackems, as he very much seems to possess an extraordinary amount of potential.

Having burst onto the scene by scoring the winner in a 1-0 victory over Everton towards the back end of last season – a goal that saw the £900k-rated man become the youngest-ever player to score on their first start in the Premier League – it was reported that the likes of Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Manchester United and Chelsea all added the striker to their shortlist of potential transfer targets this summer.

As such, it is somewhat surprising that Slavisa Jokanovic appears to be happy to sanction the temporary departure of the man Micah Richards dubbed a “fantastic” talent, as he could prove to be a very useful player for the Blades in their Championship campaign this season.

However, this is not something that should concern Sunderland, with it appearing highly advisable for Louis-Dreyfus to do everything in his power to beat Beerschot to the signing of the youngster – as he could well prove the difference between the Black Cats securing promotion and remaining a League One side come next summer.

Andrew McGlashan presents the plays of the second day at Headingley

(Only) wicket of the day
It wasn’t a huge vote of confidence in Darren Pattinson when Michael Vaughan left him until the last of all his quick-bowling options on the second morning. Eventually, though, he got the chance to add to the three-over spell from yesterday, but initially the signs weren’t promising. A short ball was comfortably dispatched by Ashwell Prince and there was no swing (although that was the same for all the bowlers). However, in the fourth over of his spell the moment for which Pattinson has waited all his life – well, since yesterday morning at any rate – arrived as he trapped Hashim Amla lbw. Yet, that still doesn’t quite tell the full story. It was a low, dipping full toss that should really have gone for four, but Amla missed it and Daryl Harper gave the decision, even though it was going down leg. Pattinson and his new team-mates didn’t care, and in a few years he’ll be telling his kids it was a ripping leg-cutter.Sight of the day
Saturday of any Test in England is fancy-dress day, but at Headingley they take it to extremes. There was plenty of interesting attire on show during the opening day, but you could tell it was the weekend when a wedding party walked into the Western Terrace at around 10am. They were all blokes. Later on, as South Africa ticked their way towards England’s total, four bananas started doing a dance and after lunch a scantily clad angel received huge cheers. As everyone tried to see who was getting the standing ovation someone shouted: “She’s the one next to Virgil [from the Thunderbirds].” Only at Headingley.Statement of the day
South Africa were making steady progress towards England’s 203 when Monty Panesar was finally given his first crack with the ball. If he didn’t take wickets, Michael Vaughan would have at least expected some control. However, the game plan of Ashwell Prince and AB de Villiers made a clear statement as to where the balance of power was lying. Prince twice stepped down the pitch, lofting Panesar straight back down the ground for sweet sixes, the first of which brought up his half century. de Villiers joined in with a strong sweep for four and suddenly England were losing control as South Africa took the lead.Revolving door of the day
It is common knowledge that England’s players like to take their comfort breaks. They aren’t alone among international teams in stretching the use of substitutes to the limit of the Laws, but at one stage it was hard to keep track of who was on and who was off. Kevin Pietersen was followed by Andrew Strauss before James Anderson also popped off. Anderson may have had the valid excuse of needing a painkiller for his back, but the upshot of it all was that one of the busiest men was 12th man Garry Park from Durham. Maybe England’s players are making the most of being able to head off for a few minutes, as from October 1 the ICC are tightening the Laws on when a player can leave the field.Spoilsport of the day
The crowd in the Western Terrace were well lubricated by tea. One worse-for-wear person enjoyed a wrestling match with the police, then one of the many beach balls being thrown around bounced onto the ground at deep midwicket. The crowd chanted for a fielder to throw it back. Kevin Pietersen would surely have obliged (and later did with a mobile phone), so too Andrew Flintoff, but not Monty Panesar. He jogged over from deep square-leg, picked up the offending object and calmly handed it to a steward. For once, he wasn’t the crowd’s favourite.

As equipes continuaram criando oportunidades.

Derby County: Rams eye James Garner

Derby County have reportedly registered their interest in signing Manchester United midfielder James Garner, according to The Athletic (Wednesday 11th August 2021).

What’s the story?

The Rams had problems heading into the 2021/22 Championship campaign, with Wayne Rooney struggling for senior depth in his first-team squad.

Derby named a youthful substitutes bench during pre-season and their season opener against Huddersfield Town, but they have added some much-needed depth to their team in recent weeks.

However, they’re seemingly keen to continue to strengthen, with The Athletic claiming that Rooney is keen on raiding his former club for a potential agreement with James Garner.

Garner spent the 2020/21 season on loan with Nottingham Forest, and his short-term future at Old Trafford remains ‘up in the air’ heading into the new Premier League campaign.

‘Next Michael Carrick’

Garner spent the first half of last season on loan with Watford but found regular minutes hard to come by with Xisco Munoz’s side, who already have a considerable number of options in their midfield, which limited Garner’s game time.

That saw him briefly return to Old Trafford with Manchester United, before going on to sign for Nottingham Forest, who gave him first-team games at the City Ground.

Garner repaid that faith shown in him by Chris Hughton, by turning out with a number of strong performances for the Reds, as they finished 17th in the Championship table.

The midfielder had an average Whoscored rating of 6.98 for Nottingham Forest last term, which put him top of the list of their best performers from last year’s campaign.

Garner averaged two tackles per game, as well as an average of 1.7 interceptions per game, which shows that he can offer the ideal protection to a Derby County defence that is yet to keep a clean sheet in all competitions this term.

Forest are believed to be keen on re-signing Garner on a temporary basis this summer, although they’ve been joined by Derby County in the race to land the 20-year-old’s signature.

Garner was once labelled as ‘the next Michael Carrick’ by Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, after the midfielder came on as a substitute against Crystal Palace during the 2018/19 season.

“I believe he’s got the chance to have a great future, he knows we believe in him, we’ve got great faith in him as the next Michael Carrick.”

Derby County could be in the market for another midfielder in the near future, with Graeme Shinnie being linked with a move to League One side Ipswich Town before the summer transfer window reaches a conclusion.

So, it makes perfect sense for the Rams to use Rooney’s contacts at Manchester United for a potential deal to sign Garner, as he’s shown that he can perform to a more than good enough standard in the second-tier of English football.

He’ll be keen to further his development with a loan move elsewhere, and if Derby can offer him regular game time, then you would imagine they’ll have a good chance of landing his signature.

However, competition to strike a deal to sign Garner is fierce and the Rams will have to do all they can to convince him to sign for the club this summer.

Wayne Rooney’s side are set to take on newly-promoted Peterborough United in their second match of the 2021/22 Championship season, in what could potentially be a tricky test against Posh at London Road.

AND in other news, this star could be set for a Derby County exit…

Smith leads South Africa to historic series victory

Graeme Smith produced a performance that will go down in South Africa sporting history with an unbeaten 154, one of the finest centuries in a run chase, to guide his side to a series win against England

Edgbaston has provided heartbreak for South Africa in the past, but nine years on from their lowest point in the 1999 World Cup they exorcised some ghosts by claiming their first series win in England since 1965. Graeme Smith produced a performance that will go down in South Africa sporting history with an unbeaten 154, one of the finest centuries in a run chase. The victory was clinched by a 112-run stand with Mark Boucher, after they claimed the extra half hour against a spent England attack. It was a crowning moment for Smith, whose love-affair with Edgbaston continued following his 277 in 2003. On that tour he was a young and inexperienced captain and his team failed to build on twice leading the series. Smith didn’t want this contest to go to a deciding match at The Oval. Not that the winning moment needed to be any sweeter, but the final boundary came off Kevin Pietersen. The next-highest score was 45, but it was an equally valuable innings from Boucher, an ideal man to have at the other end. He came in at 171 for 5 and England’s tails were once again up following Monty Panesar’s removal of AB de Villiers, who’d added a vital 78 with Smith. But all the emotional and physical exertions caught up with them during a final session that extended beyond three hours. By the time the extra overs were claimed, England had just about given up hope of repeating their 2005 heroics. Lightening doesn’t strike twice.Smith wore a steely determination throughout his innings as he steadily lost partners and had to be at his very best to combat a wearing surface, which offered particular assistance to Panesar from the footmarks. His century wasn’t without its moments of fortune, but batsmen deserve a dose of luck in the final innings of a Test. To highlight the difficulty of chasing runs at Edgbaston, the previous best successful pursuit was 208 and Smith’s hundred, which came off 177 balls, was also the first fourth-innings century at Edgbaston. He played positively from the outset, but without being reckless, and his main moments of concern came against Panesar. On 74 he padded up to a delivery that ripped out of the footmarks and, although replays showed it hitting middle, Aleem Dar would have been guessing to give it. Then, on 79, he had a clear let-off when Tim Ambrose’s lob to the stumps wasn’t collected by Ian Bell after Smith and de Villiers hesitated over a single. With Smith on 85, he gloved Panesar to Ambrose but England’s appeal was muted and Dar not interested. The margin between success and failure was evident next ball when his slog-sweep landed inches short of a diving Andrew Strauss at deep midwicket. However, after reaching his century progress to 150 came without major alarm, but the spark and fight had gone from England.Smart statsSouth Africa’s first Test win at Edgbaston sealed their first series triumph in England since 1965.South Africa’s 283 for 5 is the highest fourth-innings total at Edgbaston, and their fourth-highest successful chase in Tests.South Africa are only the third team – after West Indies and Australia – to win a Test at Edgbaston. West Indies have won four times and Australia thrice.Teams losing the toss have won nine out of the last 14 Tests which have ended decisively at this venue.Graeme Smith’s 154 not out was the first century in the fourth innings at Edgbaston. Smith has now scored 523 runs in four innings at Edgbaston, the most for a visiting batsman at the venue.During his innings, Smith became the fourth to score 5000 Test runs while playing as captain. His unbeaten 154 was also the second-best score by a South African in the fourth innings of a Test.Mark Boucher’s 45 not out was his top score in a successful chase: his four fifties in the fourth innings had all come in defeats. The unbroken 112-run stand between Boucher and Smith was the third-highest fourth-innings partnership at Edgbaston.Amid all the praise for Smith, Boucher’s role shouldn’t be forgotten. He was the last barrier before the tail was exposed. But he is one of South Africa’s streetfighters and nudged, nurdled and chivvied his way through the target. Boucher was one of two survivors from the 1999 World Cup side – alongside Jacques Kallis – and has witnessed more than his fair share of victories go begging at the last. This one didn’t get away.England’s bowlers just couldn’t make the potentially decisive sixth breakthrough. Their cause wasn’t aided with Ryan Sidebottom again lacking rhythm and sending down just 10 overs, while Anderson, surprisingly, bowled only 13. Inevitably, Flintoff began to show signs of tiredness as did Panesar when he started to drop short.Smith’s outward calmness was not always replicated by his team-mates or the dressing room, and at one stage the atmosphere began decidedly heated with Flintoff’s yorkers from the Pavilion End again providing the spark. He made the breakthrough in his fourth over when Neil McKenzie failed to sight a full delivery, getting struck on the boot in front of off stump as he turned away. McKenzie wore a rueful smile as he walked off, but the anger was brewing in the South African dressing room. It almost boiled over eight overs later when a screaming, low full toss thudded into the top of Kallis’s leg as he, too, turned away for cover. Steve Davis made the correct decision, but Kallis was almost apoplectic, a feeling matched by Mickey Arthur on the balcony.Life was no easier at the other end as Panesar started to find some bite and turn, both off the pitch and out of the rough. He ripped a couple past Hashim Amla’s outside edge before firing in an arm-ball, trapping him in front of leg stump. The ball was also reverse-swinging and Anderson produced a good one to remove Ashwell Prince. South Africa were four down with less than 100 on board, but their captain couldn’t be shifted and produced his finest performance when it mattered most. It’s mission accomplished.
