Pundit says Palace won’t be able to sign West Brom’s Pereira

Marcus Bent is unsure whether Crystal Palace would have the money to be able to afford to buy West Brom attacker Matheus Pereira, who is a reported summer target.

The managerless Eagles have could lose up to 22 players at the end of the month with contracts expiring, meaning a major rebuild could be required to continue to keep the club in the Premier League.

And with wide players Andros Townsend and Jeffrey Schlupp both out of contract this summer, attacking reinforcements are going to be needed, especially with Palace looking to improve on the 41 goals they scored in the Premier League last season.

But with Palace set to be working on a tight budget once again, loan deals and free transfers are likely to be their best chance of signing players.

Having said that, Palace have shopped in the Championship in recent seasons, with Ebere Eze and Nathan Ferguson two of their more promising pieces of business, despite a serious knee injury preventing the latter from making a first-team appearance.

Pereira, who scored 12 goals in 34 appearances last term, is another second-tier player that is likely to be up for sale this summer following West Brom’s relegation, but the 25-year-old is available for £15m according to The Daily Star, via HITC, and Bent exclusively told The Transfer Tavern that could prove a barrier for Palace:

“He scored 12 goals last season, but he’s still young. Palace again with the budget, but I don’t know what kind of budget they’re going to have.

“But looking at the club and where they are, the amount of loan players they have, they’re not going to be challenging for top-10, so it’s all about players that have potential.”

No amistoso contra a Ponte, marcado posteriormente, algumas imperfeições devem estar visíveis.

Tottenham: Napoli eye Ben Davies

Tottenham Hotspur’s Ben Davies is a potential left-back target for Napoli, according to Ciro Venerato.

RAI journalist Venerato dropped the news while speaking on Radio Kiss Kiss (via Napoli Magazine).

The lowdown

Davies, who has been with Spurs since 2014 when he joined from Swansea, made 14 Premier League starts last season.

Sergio Reguilon, a summer signing from Real Madrid, was favoured in the left-back position.

The Welshman, who has helped his country progress to the Round of 16 at the European Championships, still has three years left on his Spurs contract.

His sale could net Spurs a healthy fee, given that contract situation and Transfermarkt valuing him at £14.4million.

The latest

Venerato reports that Chelsea’s Emerson Palmieri remains Napoli’s primary left-back target.

But if they fail to land the Italian, they are expected to turn their attention to Davies.

Napoli are tipped to use their ‘good relations’ with Fabio Paratici, Tottenham’s new director of football, to ‘snatch’ the 28-year-old.

The verdict

Spurs shouldn’t sell Davies because of his versatility. He played as a centre-back on six occasions last season and is well suited to the role on the left of a three. In fact, the Euro 2020 star can play anywhere on the left side of defence from centre-back to left-midfield, making him tailor-made for Paratici.

Paratici’s preference is thought to be a back three system, so much so he ‘changed course’ in negotiations with Paulo Fonseca when he learned of the Portuguese’s intention to play 4-2-3-1.

It would make little sense to sell a ready-made option for this new shape, even if a reasonable bid arrived, especially while the Lilywhites do not even know who their new manager will be – a boss who is on the same page as Paratici will surely see the benefit in keeping the versatile Davies around.

In other news, Spurs have struck an agreement with this Liga NOS outfit.

Batsmen under pressure as series winner is sought by New Zealand

New Zealand has been designated Middle Earth as a result of the release of the first film of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but it is the middle ground the CLEAR Black Caps are seeking in the National Bank Series decider against England in Dunedin

Lynn McConnell25-Feb-2002New Zealand has been designated Middle Earth as a result of the release of the first film of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but it is the middle ground the CLEAR Black Caps are seeking in the National Bank Series decider against England in Dunedin tomorrow.New Zealand have proven great starters in one-day series, both in Australia and at home this summer.England have been great finishers in India and in New Zealand.

But the home team are looking for the recovery that will see them repeat a series victory in Dunedin, just as they did in a high-scoring contest against Pakistan last summer. However, looking to the local conditions is not likely to be sufficient on its own.New Zealand has had serious batting problems exposed, especially with Nathan Astle being taken out of the batting equation by his own fault or through decisions against him. However, all the batsmen go under the microscope tomorrow after a run of poor performances.Conditions should favour the batsmen and while batting first has to be the main consideration on such a good pitch, the fact remains that New Zealand did win after an outstanding 280-plus run chase last year. That sort of score will not be to the fore this year given the nature of the lower scores since the bouncer law came into effect, but the game still has the potential to be the highest scoring encounter of the series.New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming ruled out opening the innings as he did last year. The batsmen had been selected as openers and that was their role. Fleming’s job was to get the majority of runs on the board and said he would be doing that in the middle-order.He hinted that New Zealand would retain the same 11 as in Auckland, meaning Brendon McCullum will bat on his home ground with Ian Butler again 12th man.Fleming said the instructions for the batsmen were simple: “It’s a fine line between being aggressive and being reckless and we spent too much time in the reckless zone.”What I’m asking for, and looking for, as a batting unit is that you are getting one or two performances, or half performances but you’re getting nothing else, so it’s all or nothing. And it’s not one, two or three players, it’s one or nothing.”What we’ve got to get is contributions. If a guy is having his day you have got to get guys supporting that with 30, 40 or 50 while he goes on to get 80-100. That’s how you get the big scores and that’s when you see (Chris) Cairns, (Chris) Harris and (Andre) Adams come in and finish the innings,” he said.
MatthewHoggard

England had been bowling very well at the top of the innings and Matthew Hoggard had produced two especially impressive opening spells.”There’s a fine line between giving them respect and taking the initiative, that’s what the guys at the top and the guys through the middle have to assess,” he said.Having another dasher of a batsman in McCullum at the top of the order was a case of trying to extend the strike rate.It didn’t use many more overs, but it did require a higher risk rate.”That is what we are trying to do, create a longer period of the ability to get a strike rate,” he said.Fleming was also looking to take impetus from the Carisbrook crowd.”It’s a good crowd, a great crowd. We enjoy it, they are very loud. These are our people. It’s like Auckland. That’s why we were so disappointed. It’s the first time we’ve ever played in front of a full house in Auckland and we wanted to win desperately.”It’s the same down here. We get a good crowd, they’re very passionate about it. We just want to do well, so we will tap into that if we can and play well and get them on our side,” he said. The weather forecast is for a fine day and the perfect finale to a 15-game campaign for the CLEAR Black Caps in which the overall count is six won, eight lost, and one to play.

Although Adams made yet another fifty, Leewards were bowledout for 163 in 62.5 overs. West Ham keen on Martin Braithwaite

West Ham are said to be among the clubs interested in signing Martin Braithwaite this summer…

What’s the word?

According to Spanish outlet Sport, the Irons are one of four Premier League teams to have enquired to La Liga giants Barcelona over a potential move for the Denmark striker in this transfer window. Brighton, Burnley and newly-promoted Norwich City are the other teams mentioned by the report.

After the signings of Sergio Aguero and Memphis Depay, it seems likely that the Danish international will leave the Nou Camp and they want to recoup as much as they can of the €18m (£15m) they paid for him back in February 2020.

Avoid at all costs

It’s no secret that West Ham manager David Moyes is keen to bolster his frontline ahead of next season.

The Irons will be competing in the Europa League, which means there’s a serious potential of a 50-plus game season, and right now they aren’t well-equipped to deal with it in terms of squad depth, especially upfront.

Moyes was left with only one senior centre-forward following the departure of Sebastian Haller in January in the form of the injury-prone Michail Antonio, who is yet to start more than 24 Premier League games in a season for the club.

However, Braithwaite is far from the ideal candidate to help the Hammers next season. After all, he has struggled in England before and that wasn’t even in the top flight.

The £26m-rated forward endured a disastrous and controversial spell under Tony Pulis at Middlesbrough in the Championship, where he only bagged nine goals before he expressed his desire to leave the club.

Speaking about the incident at the time, the stern Welshman blasted the Dane’s “disrespect” for the club, claiming that he was “the highest-paid player I’ve ever worked with” and that he was an “ungrateful person,” as per Gazzette Live.

Somehow, Braithwaite has found himself at Barcelona, where he has continued to show that he’s just not good enough in front of goal, even when the likes of Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann are providing him support.

In 29 league appearances for the Catalan giants last season, the 5 foot 10 striker has found the net just twice, taking his career total to 93 in 401 appearances – that’s one goal every 4.3 matches.

He must be avoided at all costs by West Ham.

AND in other news, Moyes could sign West Ham’s next Ferdinand in “tremendous” £7.2m-rated “great leader”…
