Jose Mourinho should unleash Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg on West Ham this Sunday after seeing Moussa Sissoko struggle against Wolfsberger in the Europa League.

The Tottenham boss took the opportunity to rotate and provide some game time for the fringe players after losing Harry Kane, Sergio Reguilon, Giovanni Lo Celso and Serge Aurier to injury in quick succession, but Sissoko struggled to have much of an impact occupying a deep-lying role.

Goals from Heung-min Son, Gareth Bale and Lucas Moura gave Spurs the lead in the first leg of the Europa League last 32. Yet, Sissoko threatened to undo all their hard work after his clumsy challenge in the box allowed Wolfsberger to pull one back by way of a penalty from Michael Liendl.

It was a night to forget for the Frenchman in Budapest and may have damaged his chances of starting again anytime soon. An uncharacteristically lightweight display from the 31-year-old saw Sissoko lose 70% of his duels overall, winning just four out of his 13 ground duels in total, as he struggled to get a foothold in the game.

Compare this to that of Hojbjerg’s with the Dane’s duel success rate a fine 51% this season, and it’s clear just how much they missed out by having Sissoko on the pitch for as long as they did instead.

Hojbjerg burst onto the scene at Southampton after a brief stint with Bayern Munich. Having excelled for the Saints, Spurs took a punt on the versatile midfielder and have been duly rewarded, with the 25-year-old establishing himself as one of the club’s most consistent and reliable performers this season.

In 23 Premier League appearances this season, he has so far averaged a WhoScored match rating of 6.97 for his efforts, that being the best of all midfielders and the fourth-highest overall, bettered only by the likes of Kane, Son and Tanguy Ndombele.

And this is simply why he must start against West Ham on Sunday. “Pierre is, first of all, very intelligent. He reads the game very well. He’s going to be a coach one day, for sure,” Mourinho said after the 2-0 win over Arsenal.

He added:

“Physically, he’s very, very strong, and technically he’s much better than people think. Because sometimes people think the guy that is good technically is the guy that does the backheel. The guy that is good technically is the guy that does something wonderful. But these are not my words. These are words from coaches of 30, 40 years ago. Simplicity is genius.

“And the guy is so simple in everything he does with the ball. And I think he’s a phenomenal player. Congratulations, Mr Levy.”

Having Hojbjerg at their disposal is at least one of the few positives for the Lilywhites, who have otherwise endured a rather frustrating season as they currently lie six points adrift of the top four

No other Spurs star is averaging as many as Hojbjerg’s 2.8 tackles per game, while he also tops the charts for interceptions (1.3 per game) and is third behind Kane and Son for assists this term, as per WhoScored.

That merely shows how big an influence he is on this Spurs team – a game-changer.

Starting the Danish midfielder against David Moyes’ side would be a good step in the right direction and could put them back on track heading into the business end of the season.

He has the ability to change the game in their favour from the anchorman role, especially with Manchester United loanee Jesse Lingard in fine mettle in front of Tomas Soucek and Declan Rice.

Visando o início do Campeonato Brasileiro da Série A, a Ponte Preta anunciou, no começo da semana, a contratação do lateral-direito Diogo Mateus junto ao Vitória-BA. Aos 23 anos, o jogador chega à Macaca, por empréstimo, válido até dezembro deste ano.

Diogo, que passou também por clubes como o Internacional (RS) e Porto (POR), poderá ser utilizado já no Campeonato Paulista, caso a Ponte avance à próxima fase da competição. A Macaca soma 12 pontos no Grupo B e ocupa a terceira colocação, atrás de Ituano e Palmeiras.

Além da contratação do lateral, o time alvinegro anunciou também o empréstimo do volante Ferrugem ao Figueirense-SC, até o final deste ano. O jogador tem contrato com a Ponte até junho de 2017.

The last few years have been a turbulent mess at the Stadium of Light and only now are Sunderland beginning to see a glow at the end of the tunnel.

They are in their third year in League One but with Stewart Donald and Phil Parkinson gone, more savoury times are emerging. Kyril Louis-Dreyfus has talked a good game since arriving and alongside Kristjaan Speakman, there is an encouraging view for the future.

Lee Johnson is engineering positive results on the pitch too. They sit in the playoffs and are in the Papa John’s Trophy final.

Though, there are still problems, particularly in terms of the club’s academy. Louis-Dreyfus has spoken of the need to reinvigorate Sunderland in that department and after everything that’s happened in the last few years you can hardly blame him.

The club’s U23 side failed to win a single game last year and have witnessed a host of their top stars being poached. Josh Maja is the most high profile of them, a striker who is now scoring goals in the Premier League for Fulham.

Though, they have also lost the likes of Sam Greenwood, Bali Mumba, Luke Hewitson, Morten Spencer and Logan Pye.

Greenwood and Maja have arguably been the most successful graduates to leave but another is now proving why Sunderland should have so much regret about the way they’ve treated their academy.

That happens to be Joe Hugill. The teenage striker left the Academy of Light behind last summer for a measly fee of £300,000 to Manchester United. That’s looking like a bargain after the impact he’s made at youth level for the Red Devils.

The 6 foot 2 forward netted six goals in four games for the U18s before earning a swift promotion to the U23s. His form has been mesmeric since, bagging ten strikes in 14 matches and being nominated for the January Premier League 2 Player of the Month.

For a glimpse of what he’s capable of, he scored four goals during their U23s recent win over Liverpool. A tricky forward with a strong physical presence, he’s already been compared to Harry Kane in his short career.

You can see why too. Hugill’s first touch is graceful while his finishing ability is ruthless. The 17-year-old has been superb for Man United but he’s quickly looking like one that got away for the Mackems.

After all, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer already has Hugill on his radar for a first-team debut saying: “If we go from that game [vs Liverpool], I’d pick Joe Hugill.

“Four goals by Hugill, he’s a top striker as well, we’re looking forward to seeing his development.”

It will be of utmost importance for Louis-Dreyfus and co to ensure incidents like this don’t happen again. They cannot afford to neglect the academy further.

وأوضحت أن إدارة ليفربول لن تقف في طريق نيكو ويليامز، خاصة مع وجود كونور برادلي، بينما سيكون أرنولد هو الخيار الأول للفريق في ذلك المركز لسنوات عديدة قادمة.

ومن المقرر أن ينتهي العقد الحالي لـ نيكو ويليامز مع ليفربول في عام 2025.

Swansea City can move into the automatic promotion spots with a win against Middlesbrough on Saturday afternoon, although with the visitors looking strong under Neil Warnock, it won’t be an easy task for Steve Cooper’s side.

The Swans picked up a hugely important three points in their last fixture against Stoke thanks to Andre Ayew’s last-gasp penalty in midweek, and with Brentford having struggled of late, Saturday could represent a real opportunity for Swansea to stamp their authority as automatic promotion candidates.

Although Swansea have conceded the fewest goals in the division, they have been leaking goals in recent defeats against Bristol City and Huddersfield, so Cooper will be hoping for a clean sheet when they take on Warnock’s side this weekend.

Having recovered from injury to feature, Kyle Naughton continues in defence alongside Ben Cabango and Marc Guehi, as it was he who won the late penalty against Stoke with a typical run forward from defence.

Although Jake Bidwell was rested in midweek, Ryan Manning produced an impressive display and provided the assist for Connor Roberts’ equaliser, so he keeps his place.

There are two changes in midfield, as Connor Hourihane comes back in, replacing Korey Smith to partner Matt Grimes.

Yan Dhanda, who has averaged 1.1 shots per game this season, could be the man to unlock this Middlesbrough defence, so he starts in place of Jay Fulton in a more attacking midfield role.

Finally, there’s one change in attack, as Morgan Whittaker comes in for the out-of-form Jamal Lowe, who struggled to have any real impact against Stoke on Wednesday (zero shots on target) and is scoreless in his last ten matches.
