Throughout the summer, Zinedine Zidane only ever had one real transfer target – Paul Pogba.

And now, amid the emergence of the new images from Daily Mirror that show Zidane meeting with Manchester United’s star, the speculation has again been reignited once more.

But looking at Los Blancos’ squad, they already have a man capable of doing what Pogba does and more.

Getting the star midfielder into his squad has become somewhat of an obsession for Real Madrid’s boss.

And sure, Pogba is definitely one of the more popular choices in today’s market and a name many are familiar with.

But at this point, it seems that Zidane will stop at nothing to incorporate the skilled Frenchman into his team despite some obvious negatives of that potential deal.

Still, the biggest reason why Real Madrid should definitely not splash the cash for Pogba is rather simple – they already have a player in their squad who is more than capable of leading their revolution.

Kroos vs Pogba

Toni Kroos has been one of Real Madrid’s most consistent players throughout the years.

The 28-year-old German midfielder is well-known on the footballing stage but this season, he has been arguably Los Blancos’ best player.

Kroos was dropping masterclass performances left, right and centre, week in, week out and he’s showing no signs of stopping either – particularly with an average rating north of 7.5 in the Champions League and just below that region in the league, via WhoScored.

This becomes even more clear when we compare his numbers to Pogba’s.

The German has one goal and one assist to his name so far but that is not nearly the thing that describes his game the most. He also tallied 93.1% passing accuracy with 67.4 average passes per game and has even started shooting more, with two shots per game so far under his belt.

Pogba, on the other hand, has maintained just 80.7% passing accuracy in the Premier Leauge thus far with, granted, slightly more average passes per game with 73.6. He also has two assists to his name in five games played.

But Kroos beats him with 3.3 key passes per game as opposed to Pogba’s 2.6 and also 1.8 tackles compared to the Frenchman’s 1.7.

Pogba is a slightly better dribbler with 1.6 compared to Kroos’ 0.8 per game.

Still, even with that being said, the difference between the two is big in aspects that matter the most to Real Madrid such as the German’s passing abilities, while the categories that favour the Frenchman are not as emphasised.

Going out and potentially spending the big bucks on a player that wouldn’t really be an improvement on their current midfield general doesn’t seem like good business for Los Blancos.

Especially considering that according to Bild, Real Madrid were even contemplating sending Kroos the other way to Manchester not that long again.

Needless to say, that would be like shooting their own foot.

وأكمل: “راضيون عن الهزيمة بما أننا أول المجموعة، وأتمنى حضور الجماهير في المباريات المقبلة”.

وتأهل سيمبا متصدرًا والأهلي ثانيًا في المجموعة الأولى من دوري أبطال إفريقيا.

All good things must come to an end, as the saying goes.

For Real Madrid, their brilliant unbeaten record from the start of the 2019/20 La Liga season is finally broken and it came courtesy of none other than little Mallorca.

Before the game, not many would’ve predicted this outcome. After all, Los Blancos were first in the table while their Saturday night hosts were fighting to stay out of the relegation zone.

But now, Zinedine Zidane’s troops have yielded the top of the table to their bitter rivals, Barcelona, who beat Eibar.

And yes, the Frenchman did deploy a somewhat rotated squad but the players who were finally given a chance did not really perform in the way they were supposed to.

One of those players was the 21-year-old striker Luka Jovic, a Serbian forward who arrived in the summer.

Jovic has had a rocky start to his career at the Spanish capital and the 66 minutes he mustered against Mallorca now mean he has just 264 under his name in total; he has started three times in the span of the nine games Real Madrid have played in La Liga so far.

But if anything, this performance might only make Zidane less willing to pick him.

The young Serbian couldn’t muster a single shot during his stay on the pitch and didn’t deploy any key passes.

As a matter of fact, he was, for the most part, largely invisible against Mallorca, only tallying 29 touches on the night, which was the fifth-lowest on the whole team – including the goalkeeper and the three substitutes that were introduced later in the game.

Jovic really didn’t have a good game but even though he shouldn’t be looking for excuses, it also wouldn’t be too big of a stretch to stay that some of this is on Zidane.

After all, it’s difficult to expect a young player who’s still pretty fresh at the club to perform at the highest level whenever he’s selected, especially when he isn’t allowed any continuity at all.

Being so sporadically picked is definitely not helping him at this stage of his career, while it remains to be seen how long will Zidane tolerate these sub-par performances in the future – which really don’t help his case either.

It feels like six of one and half a dozen of the other, but whichever perspective you view Jovic’s situation from, it’s starting to become a major problem for Real Madrid.

Well, it was certainly better than Friday night.

Southampton were dumped out of the EFL Cup by Manchester City on Tuesday as they suffered a 3-1 loss at the Etihad Stadium.

However, it was a decent performance and indeed result when considering that they suffered a 9-0 home defeat to Leicester City in the Premier League at the end of last week.

There will be no more EFL Cup football for the Saints this season, but they face another trip to City in the league this weekend, which is not exactly ideal.

Sofiane Boufal was handed a start on Tuesday night as he went in search of his first goal of the 2019/20 campaign.

It was not to be for the 26-year-old, but he actually completed 11 of his 12 passes during a decent display against Pep Guardiola’s side, according to WhoScored.

And a number of Southampton fans were disappointed that the attacker was replaced in the 69th minute whilst the Saints were looking for a route back into the match.

He might just have stumbled onto something here.

Whilst Mark Lawrenson might not come across as everyone’s favourite cup of tea, there are a couple of times that he manages to get things right, and this is one of those times.

What’s he said?

Speaking on the BBC Sport website during his weekly predictions column, Lawrenson made an interesting point about the Blades’ last game against West Ham United:

“You can never accuse either of these teams of lacking effort or intensity, and I think this will turn out to be a cracking contest. Sheffield United were poor early on in their draw with West Ham last week, but they turned it around after the break and I am sure Chris Wilder’s half-time team talk will have had something to do with it.”

Making a strong start

If you take a look at Sheffield United’s games so far this season, this has tended to be a trend for them.

They have only managed to take the lead in games three times this season, against Crystal Palace, Everton and Arsenal and in each of those fixtures they went on to get three points.

In all the other games they have found themselves chasing the game at some point, and that has brought in a mixed bag of success, with results such as a draw against Chelsea and a defeat against Leicester City.

So this should really be an indicator to Chris Wilder and the team about how they need to start approaching games, with ‘start’ being the keyword there.

Wilder has said that he doesn’t like his team being called a ‘defensive side’, but as we have discussed on FFC, that is how his team have been playing so far this season.

That doesn’t make it a bad thing though, in fact, it should give them a decent platform to build on during matches.

If the Blades can just start the game with a little bit more aggression and then get themselves a lead to defend, then they’ve shown that they are more than capable of holding out for a result, just like they did against Arsenal.

You do wonder if this is a case of ‘small club syndrome’.

Whereby he’s getting ignored just because he doesn’t play for one of the more fashionable or ‘big clubs’.

That’s the situation that Dean Henderson finds himself in having been left out of Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

He is joint top of the Premier League in terms of clean sheets, sharing that honour with Manchester City’s Ederson, and the Blades have one of the better defences in the league, having only conceded eight goals.

It’s not like you can give the defenders like Jack O’Connell and Chris Basham the credit for all the results either, or they’d be included in the squad ahead of him.

But it’s Henderson that Sheffield United fans were most annoyed about being excluded as they took to social media to call out the England boss for leaving him out.

Perhaps he’s still being ‘punished’ for his error against Liverpool back in September, in which case he’s going to have to keep up the good work in order to make people forget about it.
