Liverpool won the Champions League back in June after hitting an agonisingly good 97 point tally in the Premier League, only to lose out to eventual champions, Manchester City.

Jurgen Klopp will have been delighted with his side’s European cup win, but the Premier League title eluded the Reds once more in what was the most impressive title-race of all time.

Liverpool’s wonderful season came on the back of some big summer spending in the transfer market that saw the likes of Fabinho and Alisson Becker arrive for hefty transfer fees, but they made all the difference as they accompanied Virgil van Dijk and Naby Keita, also expensive signings, to Champions League glory.

While the Reds have shown to be quite aggressive in the transfer market in the previous three seasons, spending a combined £392m, this summer the Merserysiders have been very quiet and are yet to add to their squad.

Fresh signings needed

In previous seasons, we’ve seen clubs all too often have wonderful campaigns, fail to add efficiently to their squad in the summer, and ultimately watch their model and winning formula go stale. Manchester City and Chelsea, on two occasions each since 2012, have failed to retain their trophy, and have even failed to really sustain a title challenge as champions.

It’s not just about adding players for the sake of it, it’s adding players who really add a different dimension to your side. Pep Guardiola seems to have understood this, shown by the £60m spent on Riyad Mahrez last summer, who helped City finally retain a Premier League title.

The Algerian’s arrival gave Guardiola a new tactic to adopt, in that his wingers could come inside and drive centrally, very different to the sorts of runs Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling were making on the left and right wing respectively.

Liverpool’s front three is pretty set, as is their midfield. Unless there’s a top youngster breaking through the ranks, Klopp should look into the market to strengthen his side. No, Liverpool aren’t defending a title, but trying to get anywhere near that 97-point tally is a huge task, and history suggests it will take a refresh in the squad to give the Reds an unpredictability they need to reach those heights once more.

As confirmed on the club’s official website, Arsenal academy product Dominic Thompson has joined Championship side Brentford on a permanent transfer.

What’s the word?

The 21-year-old featured prominently on the Gunners’ pre-season tour this summer and could have hoped to push for a role in the first-team squad for the upcoming campaign.

However, as reports continue to claim a move for Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney is approaching its conclusion, Thompson’s game-time would no doubt have been heavily impacted at the Emirates.

The Telegraph journalist Sam Dean reports Unai Emery’s side will receive a fee in the region of £3m for Thompson, that could potentially rise to £4m.

Good business

Having joined the club back in 2012 as a youth prospect, Thompson mainly turned out for the Gunners’ U18 and U23 sides. So for the Arsenal hierarchy to get a decent sum of money for a player who hadn’t turned out for the first-team in a competitive fixture is some going.

Furthermore, Sam Dean’s claim that the north London side also have a sell-on clause inserted into the deal represents another shrewd piece of business from a club that has notoriously been questioned for its policy when it comes to moving players on.

The Gunners have spent big-money this summer, but selling players like Thompson for a sum of money when it appears evident that a first-team place was likely to be improbable, is another sign Emery’s side are heading in the right direction off the pitch.

Loads of Liverpool fans on Twitter have unexpectedly called for the club to appoint Jose Mourinho as Jurgen Klopp’s successor following comments this week from the German in his home country which suggest he could leave the role in 2022.

That is the date when the 52-year-old’s contract with the Merseyside outfit is due to expire, and it would also take him up to seven years – the same time he managed at previous clubs Mainz and Borussia Dortmund.

In quotes from Bild, as translated by The Mirror, when asked what is next in his career he said: “I hope to continue like this, but in two, three years I don’t know what may happen.

“Maybe I’ll retire!

“It doesn’t necessarily mean it will happen, however, but if that were the case, you wouldn’t be surprised.”

Those words have obviously got Liverpool supporters talking about who could potentially replace Klopp when he does eventually go, and Mourinho was a surprise name on quite a few lips.

Given he has managed Chelsea and arch-rivals Manchester United – and been sacked by both in the previous four years following some poor performances and results – it is a surprise that the Anfield faithful would want him, with one even describing him as a “perfect fit”.

Of course in addition his style of play is seen as more defensive and conservative than Klopp’s sometimes gung-ho approach, although you can’t argue with his haul over honours over the years – including three Champions League trophies, one Europa League success and three Premier League titles.

Jamie Redknapp has come to the defence of Aston Villa striker Wesley following his first goal for the club on Friday night.

What’s he said?

Villa secured their first win of the Premier League season having lost both their opening two matches against Tottenham and Bournemouth.

A first goal from their club-record man and a last-minute finish from substitute Anwar El Ghazi secured all three points against Everton last Friday.

In his regular Team of the Weekend column for the Daily Mail, pundit Jamie Redknapp was pleased to see that the Villa forward had silenced his doubters, he said:

“I’m sick of seeing strikers written off after one of two outings.

“We need to give them time.

“Back in the day, we would wait for 10 games to judge a player properly. That’s why I am glad two strikers, in particular, showed what they are about this weekend to silence the critics – one was Aston Villa’s Wesley.

“They did their jobs and led their teams to their first wins of the season. Now let’s get off their backs and see how they progress.”

Bang on

Last week, Villa boss Dean Smith launched a defence of Wesley, suggesting it was impossible to judge someone so early into the season after he failed to net in his opening two matches.

The season is merely three games old so to see any criticism of Wesley was rather surprising, meaning Redknapp is right in what he says.

Making the transition to the Premier League from a foreign country isn’t easy, especially if you’ve never played in England before. There are numerous things to overcome – having to learn a new language, meet new teammates and adjust to the change in environment.

It was always going to be a slow start, even if he did bag two goals during pre-season, but that has nothing on the physicality or the intensity of the Premier League, as described by ESPN.

Strength, however, is an attribute Wesley has, winning five aerial duels in his last two Premier League outings, as per WhoScored.

For Club Brugge last season, the 6 foot 3 forward scored 17 goals in 48 appearances which earned him links to top-flight rivals Arsenal before joining the west Midlands club.

His story is quite remarkable having lost his father when he was just nine years old and he also had to work in a factory to pay the bills before becoming Villa’s club-record man – two factors that would have no doubt contributed to a tough character.

As Redknapp says, it’s time to cut him some slack as Friday just proves what Wesley is able to bring to the Premier League this season.

واستطرد: “لم يكن بيولي معتادًا على العمل مع كبار اللاعبين، لكنه يتمتع بالخبرة وأثبت نفسه كمدرب رائع، الآن ليس هناك شك في أنه مناسب لهذا المستوى”.

واسترسل: “عندما أتيت إلى إيطاليا للمرة الأولى، كان لدي زملائي في الفريق الذين رأوني كطفل صغير جلب الطاقة والأدرينالين، كانوا جميعًا نجومًا فازوا بألقاب مهمة وكانوا في القمة لبعض الوقت”.

وحول عدم احتساب ركلة جزاء لصالح مانشستر يونايتد في الشوط الأول، مع وجود لمسة يد على أودوي، قال توخيل: “كيف يمكن أن نلجأ لتقنية الفيديو في هذه اللعبة؟”.
