Sir Alex Ferguson believes Manchester United should do a deal for Leicester City defender Harry Maguire this summer, as reported by Manchester Evening News.

What’s the story?

Although not carrying direct quotes from the Old Trafford managerial legend, the paper cites sources claiming that Ferguson believes the club should be doing all they can to land the England international, and he is shocked that they didn’t make a move for the player earlier.

The report states that the Red Devils icon reckons Maguire “would be an ideal signing”.

It was reported last week that United had a £70m bid for the player kicked into touch by the Foxes, although, it is claimed they value the player at around £75m.

Should the club take Sir Alex Ferguson’s recommendation to heart and up their initial bid?

Expensive choice

Maguire is a competent defender at the top level and has extensive experience behind him that suggests he is comfortable in the English Premier League, but at the reported £75m he would be an expensive choice.

When you consider that United signed Victor Lindelof for £31m and Eric Bailly for £30m in recent years, then it becomes a fee that borders on the absurd given Maguire is not necessarily a huge upgrade on either.

He also lacks any UEFA Champions League experience, with performances in that competition a key indicator of whether a player can step up to the elite level that United need to reach next season. Both Lindelof and Bailly have that under their belts.

Ferguson’s endorsement doesn’t make a huge money move for him more sensible or justifiable.

Leicester value the player highly because of his importance to them, not his potential at United, and with many years left on his contract they are rightly protecting a key asset.

From the Red Devils’ perspective though, Maguire should be avoided until the asking price is reduced.

According to The Telegraph, Aston Villa are closing in on the signing of Manchester City’s Douglas Luiz.

What’s the word?

Aston Villa have made some significant moves in the transfer window already, adding Wesley and Tyrone Mings to their ranks for combined fees of £42m.

They’ve shown no signs of lacking funds in the market after bringing in no fewer than seven new bodies.

Following the release of eight players plus Ross McCormack, it appears the Villans are doing their best to add plenty of squad depth.

And their latest arrival could be Douglas, per The Telegraph.

They claim that they are close to signing the Brazilian for a fee of £15m. The report understands that City have also included a buyback clause in the deal.

The midfielder previously had work permit issues meaning he had to move to Spain to play for Girona on loan, yet that will apparently cause no problems in Villa’s pursuit.

Hourihane should feel threatened

Dean Smith’s midfield was easily one of the best in the Championship last season with Jack Grealish, John McGinn and Conor Hourihane all hitting double figures in terms of goal involvements.

Grealish and McGinn were the real stars of the Villa side, though, and as a result, are unlikely to be dislodged going into the new campaign.

However, Villa have been in the market for a defensive midfielder, targeting the likes of Kalvin Phillips, Marvelous Nakamba, Baptiste Santamaria and now Douglas.

With that in mind, Hourihane’s place in the team would be in considerable danger, particularly if the Brazil youth international arrived.

The 21-year-old enjoyed a productive term in La Liga throughout 2018/19, featuring as a central midfielder, as well as playing in a holding role, two positions the Irishman also played in.

As such, there is a case to be made that their potential new £15m arrival would dislodge him.

In terms of the number of tackles per game each player made, they were extremely similar. Douglas ended the campaign with 1.5 per outing whilst Hourihane’s stood at 1.4.

The latter was involved in more goals than the City man who contributed none for Girona. But that shouldn’t come as a negative.

In the Premier League, Villa are likely to need a more disciplined player who is prepared to sit in rather than rampage forward.

Douglas, therefore, could be their answer.

Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha is interested in a move to Tottenham Hotspur, per The Independent.

What’s the word?

The Eagles star has been heavily linked with a move away from the Eagles in the summer transfer window.

Per the report, Arsenal attempted to sign the Ivory Coast international earlier in this window, while Everton are now interested in a deal.

However, Zaha is said to be interested in a move to Spurs, though Mauricio Pochettino’s side have not reciprocated that, with the club not currently interested in tabling a bid.

A wise decision

Zaha’s transfer fee is growing out of control.

A Sky Sports News report on Monday claimed that Everton had offered £55m plus two players for the former Manchester United winger, though it was quickly denied by the Toffees and they appear no closer to bringing Zaha to Goodison Park.

Spurs are being clever in staying out of a bidding war, then.

They have already spent over £50m on midfielder Tanguy Ndombele, surpassing their club-record transfer to do so, and have been linked with Real Betis’ Giovani Lo Celso and Juventus’ Paulo Dybala.

Throwing their hat into the ring for Zaha would only muddy the waters of those pursuits and would likely turn into one of the most expensive deals of the transfer window.

Spurs simply do not need the hassle, not to mention the fact that the Palace star does not at all fit the profile of player they are currently chasing; both Lo Celso and Dybala are forensic No.10s instead of being rampaging wingers.

As reported by The Express, Fulham boss Scott Parker has had his say on Harvey Elliott’s move to Liverpool.

The former England international took over the reins at Craven Cottage after Claudio Ranieri was sacked, and tried his best to keep the Cottagers’ brightest young talent at the club.

However, the 16-year-old prospect rejected a scholarship deal with Fulham and instead signed for Liverpool, amid interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.

What did Parker say?

The 38-year-old former West Ham midfielder said: “I was gutted and disappointed he chose to leave.

“I had a long chat with Harvey and explained to him the opportunity I felt we could give him this season. I felt he would be pivotal to what we are doing and part of the squad.

“At Liverpool he is going to get less opportunities than he would have here.”

He’s right, but what about Jurgen Klopp’s influence?

Admittedly, Elliott will naturally get fewer chances at Anfield for the European champions as opposed to the opportunities he would’ve got at Championship side Fulham – that much is just stating the obvious.

However, Parker shouldn’t be so quick to discount Jurgen Klopp’s ability to work with young players and give them the chance to prove themselves.

The German has already placed his trust in 19-year-old Rhian Brewster for the upcoming season, and also thrust Trent Alexander-Arnold into the spotlight at just 18 years of age for his first Premier League start which came at Old Trafford – if you’re good enough, you’re good enough for Klopp.

Klopp also helped develop Mario Gotze when the German midfielder was blossoming at Dortmund – it can’t be argued that the Liverpool boss isn’t good at developing youngsters.

Intriguingly, the 5 foot 7 Elliott has also been held behind with the first-team squad in Evian as they knuckle down in their preparations for the Community Shield, whilst other youngsters such as Sepp van den Berg, Ki-Jana Hoever and Bobby Duncan have returned home.

Parker is right in a way, but that isn’t to say that Elliott isn’t in good hands under Klopp.
