The good, the bad and the Roque Junior.

Players often earn themselves big moves after performances in a major tournament, it has become the easiest way and most convenient method of scouting players every two years without needed to send staff off to the far corners of the world.

Roque Junior was one such character.

The Brazilian defender was a member of the World Cup winning Brazil squad in 2002, which is always a good sign, we suppose, and a Champions League winner with AC Milan. Also a good sign.

Understandably former Leeds boss Peter Reid wanted him some of that. How could he fail, after all? This lad was clearly a born winner. It was in his blood. He had to succeed. He had done it before; he was going to be the making of this side and drive them forwards to eternal glory.

We imagine these were the thoughts probably streaming through Reid’s head when he made the call to secure the Brazil international on a season-long spell in 2003. Or, alternatively, maybe those that circled his thoughts as he tried to sleep at night by the time it became increasingly obvious that he may as well have burned the money used in some sort of voodoo ritual.

When we talk about terrible records, they do not get much worse than Roque Junior’s. In his opening seven first-team appearances, he yielded a remarkable four cautions and one dismissal, conceded 24 goals and was on the end of six defeats. Impressive stuff, hey. Junior did manage to bag two goals against Manchester United, though – which is more than enough to book a player in the history books under normal circumstances.

But he was extraordinarily bad, so, unfortunately, this rule did not apply.

Roque Junior left Elland Road as one of the worst signings of the century.

أجاب: “ثلاث تمريرات حاسمة للأهداف”.

أجاب: “مع اليسار في خط الوسط”.

Mike Ashley has been heavily criticised for Newcastle’s transfer business and rightfully so, but there is one deal that the Magpies owner played absolutely perfectly.

This time last season, Kenedy was the hottest prospect Newcastle had got their hands on in quite some time.

Joining the club mid-way through the last campaign on a six-month loan, he scored two goals and added two assists in 13 starts, playing a huge role in the surge that took the Magpies from relegation trouble all the way into the top ten.

And last summer, plenty of fans begged Ashley to make the Brazilian’s loan move into a permanent one, just as he did with Martin Dubravka.

But while Dubravka represented fantastic value at £3.6m, Chelsea wanted a whopping £20m for Kenedy, a figure that Ashley unsurprisingly baulked at.

Still, such was the impact of Kenedy’s first stint on Tyneside that even at such a ridiculous price for a player with so little senior experience plenty of fans wanted to pull the £20m trigger.

Nearly 12 months on, and it’s pretty clear who got the better of this war of words between the Toon Army and their much-maligned leader.

Kenedy has scored just once in 24 appearances this term while his shooting, passing and defensive contribution have all plummeted, per Whoscored.

He is getting dispossessed more this season, completing barely half the tackles, creating half as many chances all while his overall pass completion rate has dropped from 77% to 72%.

Clearly, the 23 year-old’s motivation has gone off a cliff and Ashley saw it coming. However, it would have been foolish to not sign him at all after such a productive first spell with the club, so another loan move was the best possible solution.

He doesn’t get much right, but the 54 year-old Magpies magnate absolutely nailed this one.

وعن أزمة مشاركته في مباراة خماسية وتوقيع غرامة مالية عليه تحدث لاعب الأهلي: “مشاركتي في مباراة الكرة الخماسية أخذت أكبر من حجمها، ولقد شاركت لمدة 4 دقائق فقط، لكن وُقع علينا خصم كبير حينها”.

وأضاف: “الأزمة بدأت بدعوة من أحمد فتوح لاعب الزمالك عندما دعانا للحي الذي يسكن فيه ولم نكن ذاهبون من أجل اللعب”.

وواصل: “كارتيرون (قرصني من ودني) بعد أزمة مباراة الكرة الخماسية، ثم استبعدني من مباراة حوريا كوناكري في دوري أبطال إفريقيا”.

ووتابع: “سألت محمد يوسف عن سبب استبعادي قال لي إنه ليس لقرار فني”.

وأردف: “عودتي للأهلي في المرة الأولى تسبب في وجود مقارنات مع عبد الله السعيد، ولكن هناك فارق كبير بيننا من ناحية الخبرات”.

واختتم: “عبدالله السعيد شخصيته محترفة وفاصل نفسه عن أي شئ خارج الكرة، حتى وإن كانت هناك جماهير تهتف ضده، وهو أفضل لاعب في مصر”.

Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to react after it was revealed that Rhian Brewster would be part of the Liverpool squad to take on Barcelona this evening at Anfield in the Champions League semi-final.

The teenager has been out of action for around 14 months after having surgery on both his knee and ankle, in what has been a tough spell for a precocious youngster who had just won the World Cup with England’s Under-17 side before injury struck – he also picked up the Golden Ball in the tournament.

Luis Suarez certainly had no qualms about celebrating against his former employers in the video below…

Speaking ahead of the tie, and when quizzed on Brewster, Jurgen Klopp responded sharply, saying: “He’s ready.”

The 19-year-old has never made an appearance for the senior side at Anfield, despite starring in the youth ranks for a few years now.

It would be a huge call from Klopp to hand Brewster his debut against the Spanish champions in such a huge game, but judging by their reactions on Twitter, loads of Liverpool fans want the former Borussia Dortmund manager to play him…

With all things considered, West Ham United have had a rather successful campaign and one that the Hammers can certainly build upon.

Although there will be some that feel the club could have finished higher than tenth in the Premier League, it is a far cry from what they have been experiencing in the past few seasons.

And, one man to thank for the vast improvements at the London Stadium is Manuel Pellegrini.

A natural winner, the arrival of the Chilean was lauded as a huge coup for West Ham last summer when he took charge and he certainly made his mark on the east London outfit as the season went on.

Sure, a slow start was worrying and had many concerned in the stands about just what the future held for the Hammers under his guidance, however, the experienced head managed to get things rolling and turned their fortunes around.

This summer is likely going to be another huge one for the Irons and it will need to be if they are to continue their ascent up the Premier League ladder, however, they may have been handed some encouraging news already.

The Daily Mail are claiming that Pellegrini has no intention of leaving West Ham this summer, should Sevilla or Barcelona come knocking at the door for his services, after reports in his homeland (via Daily Mail) suggested otherwise.

The 65-year-old is thought to be happy in the capital and is pleased with how the first season went and wants to use that as his starting point in his efforts to take the club to the next level.

It would always be difficult for a manager to turn down any advances from the likes of Barcelona and Sevilla, but it appears Pellegrini is not quite ready to end his second spell in England just yet and that can only be good news for David Gold and David Sullivan.

Macauley Bonne is an incredible player and has proven to be a goal machine for Leyton Orient this season. Having played every single minute of the league season for the O’s as they secured their return to the football league, Bonne has generated a lot of interest from a number of clubs, and Jack Ross would benefit from signing the 23-goal ace.

According to TalkSPORT, the 23-year-old Ipswich born once-capped Zimbabwe star has been the subject of plenty of interest thanks to his performances. Whilst Leyton Orient’s promotion rivals Salford City relied on the goals from former Aberdeen star Adam Rooney in their promotion bid, the O’s have had a great time with Bonne bagging goal on the weekly.

The 23-year-old finished the National League 3rd in the goalscoring charts, with two more goals than Rooney. Both of the pair will be plying their trade in the football league next season, and for the Orient man, he could be making an instant jump through League Two and into either League One or the Championship, depending on the outcome of Sunderland’s Wembley play-off final.

At the moment, Sunderland fans have had to put up with both Will Grigg and Charlie Wyke leading their line. Between themselves, the Black Cats’ two strikers have played 42 League One games this season and have scored eight goals. That tally is blown out of the water by Bonne, even if he is playing at a lower level. Regardless, the 23-year-old should be added as the finishing, pace and power are there.

Jack Ross will know that whatever happens in Monday’s crunch-match against Charlton he will need to be proactive in the transfer market this summer. The Mackems have got a lot of issues in their squad, and when they lost Josh Maja they lost their only guaranteed goal machine, so bringing a new one in is absolutely key, even if they have to dip into League Two to poach Bonne.
