According to Le 10 Sport, Everton have made an approach for Paris Saint-Germain defender Thomas Meunier ahead of this summer’s transfer window.

What’s the word, then?

There is no getting away from the fact that right-back has been a problem for Everton in recent weeks, with Seamus Coleman and Jonjoe Kenny sharing the position.

Recently, the Everton supporters debated whether they wanted Coleman or Kenny to start the clash with Cardiff City on February 26.

However, according to Le 10 Sport, the Toffees are looking further ahead and have approached PSG over a move for Meunier at the end of the campaign.

The 27-year-old will see his contract with the French giants expire in June 2020, suggesting that he could be available for a reasonable price.

And Everton must move for the 6ft 3in ace, who could turn out to be one of the best signings of this summer’s transfer window.

Why would Meunier be an upgrade?

Meunier, who is a 36-time Belgium international, has made 23 appearances in all competitions for PSG this season, scoring four times and contributing six assists.

Before arriving in the French capital, Meunier, who can also play wing-back, won the Belgian Pro League with Club Brugge.

Quick, powerful and impressive on the ball, the defender would be a serious upgrade on both Coleman and Kenny.

Indeed, it would be fair to say that Coleman has not been the same player since recovering from a horrific leg break, whilst Kenny has not really shown that he is capable of being a consistent, long-term option at right-back.

Everton must do all that they can to attempt to bring Meunier to the Premier League for the start of the 2019-2020 campaign.

At the end, Liverpool were able to get their man when they signed Virgil van Dijk from Southampton last January.

However, the Reds were unsuccessful in their initial pursuit in a development which resulted in the Dutch centre-half not being in the right frame of mind to play for the Saints going into the 2017/18 season (Guardian).

Van Dijk, though, in a recent interview, has insisted he always gave his everything during his time at St. Mary’s.

The Breakdown

“After the end of August [and the transfer window] I put my head down, played for Southampton and gave everything,” the Liverpool defender told the BBC (via Daily Echo).

“I was happy to play because I came back from an eight-month injury. When everything happened over the summer, people doubt you.  For me, I really didn’t care as I gave everything in games and training.”

On the pitch, it is hard to argue against what van Dijk has said with the 27-year-old having truly put in some colossal performances at the back for the Saints.

However, to say he gave everything to the club entirely after effectively going on strike following his failed summer transfer to Liverpool is absurd and likely to leave some Southampton supporters feeling a little disgruntled.

Given the project Jurgen Klopp has going on at Anfield, you can understand van Dijk’s frustration at being denied his dream move at first. But making yourself unavailable for the club who pay your wages is not the classiest of ways to go about things, making the above comments that have followed more than a year later far-fetched.

وواصل: “لقد أحببت أداءه كثيرًا، دفاعيًا كان الأمر صعبًا بالنسبة له، لكن هجوميًا بالكرة هذا هو ما نريده، هو يرغب في التمرير، كان جيدًا”.

With Roberto Firmino absent from the squad following the injury he picked up against Manchester United on Sunday, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp chose to use Sadio Mane in an unfamiliar centre-forward role against Watford at Anfield on Wednesday, and it worked wonders.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the German boss was left with a decision to make after the Brazilian was ruled out of facing the Hornets, who had beaten Cardiff City 5-1 away less than a week previously.

He could have used Mo Salah, Divock Origi or Daniel Sturridge through the middle, but instead he opted for the pace and unpredictability of Mane, with the former aforementioned duo flanking him in a 4-3-3 formation.

It was a bold move that worked wonders as the former Southampton man netted the first two goals – including a magnificent back-heel finish – of the 5-0 thrashing, that kept the Reds ahead in the Premier League title race.

When asked if he was surprised by the Senegal international’s showing he told liverpoolfc.com: “Scoring-wise of course, performance-wise not. That’s what we expect, that he plays like this, that he offers these things.”

Could he be used there again?

Almost certainly.

Klopp’s comments obviously suggest that he was concerned that the 26-year-old wouldn’t be as much of a goal threat playing as a centre-forward instead of on the wing, but he completely dispelled that with his brace in the opening 20 minutes on Merseyside.

It means that the former Borussia Dortmund coach is now able to confidently use any of his front three in that position, and that flexibility will surely only help Liverpool as their bid to win their first-ever Premier League title enters the final 10 matches.

وتحت قيادة إيمري، يتطلع فياريال للمضي قدمًا بعد حصوله على المركز الخامس في ترتيب الليجا بالموسم الماضي، وأكد الإسباني: “نحن متحمسون ومتفائلون بهذا”.

وأكد: “الدوري مفتوح دائمًا، لكن عليك أولاً أن تتذكر أن ريال مدريد انهى الموسم الماضي بقوة وأن برشلونة لا يزال لديه لاعبين رائعين، وهذا هو السبب في أن هذين الفريقين هما المرشحان للفوز باللقب، ثم لديك أتلتيكو مدريد وإشبيلية”.

Chelsea have been avoiding using their academy for years. A number of young talents have been left to rot in the Blues’ developmental system, and not only has this impacted upon their own aspirations, but it’s also prevented Chelsea from being able to make use of their talents too. 

However, the Blues’ need to change that appears to be more immediate than ever. According to the Sun, German scouts are flocking to England in order to find the next Jaden Sancho.

They’re clearing smelling blood, owing to the lack of focus being placed on young talent in England. Sancho, of course, left Man City in favour of regular football with Borussia Dortmund – and he’s now flourishing.

If Chelsea weren’t already sweating on the futures of some of their key young players, they certainly should be now. This doesn’t just stop at Callum Hudson-Odoi, of course.

Chelsea’s academy is filled with brilliant young talent, with players like Dujon Sterling, Ethan Ampadu and Mason Mount all on the cusp of greatness. However, as Chelsea continue to spend millions upon millions, their futures are looking bleak.

That now, however, needs to change. In the past, they could afford to ship players out on loan and forget about them, only giving those that dazzle away from the club a chance in the first team.

Instead, though, with German scouts looking on, players are likely to recognise that they can find permanent homes elsewhere like Sancho did, and that can improve their development greatly.

For the first time, the youngsters hold at least some of the power, and for teams like Chelsea, that’s a real worry.

وتابع: “سواريز يجيد التحرك على الأطراف والمساحات وهو ما شاهدناه منه دائمًا في الفترة الماضية، مما يمنحنا مزيدًا من الخيارات داخل منطقة الجزاء”.

وأضاف: “سنرى متى يمكننا الدفع بهما معًا في المباريات المقبلة، الشيء المهم هو أن يعطينا كلًا منهما ما نحتاجه”.
