Cricket Australia will have its fourth chair in less than 18 months after Lachlan Henderson announced he would step down early next year having taken a new role in the corporate world.Mike Baird, the former New South Wales premier, will take up the position next February having been unanimously endorsed.Henderson, who will remain on the board, became chair in February when he was appointed the permanent replacement for Earl Eddings who resigned in October 2021. Richard Freudenstein held the role in an interim position before Henderson.Chair stacking

“The new role I’ve taken in my home city Perth will make it difficult to devote the time required as Chair, so I have decided this is the right time to hand over the role,” Henderson said.Baird will take the chair at a crucial time for the game in Australia with the next broadcast rights and new MoU currently being negotiated.”Lachlan has made a great contribution as Chair and I’m delighted he will continue to provide his considerable business and cricket expertise on the CA Board,” he said.”It is an honour to take such an important role in Australian cricket at a time when so much exciting work is being done to grow our national sport and take it forward. I’m pleased to have the chance to work even more closely with CEO Nick Hockley and his team and all those working across Australian cricket.”It was been a controversial week for CA amid the fallout to David Warner withdrawing from his bid to have his leadership ban overturned, a process that was led by CEO Nick Hockley and endorsed by the board.
Newcastle United’s Champions League chase is back on track.
On Sunday, the Magpies beat Nottingham Forest 4-3 in a thoroughly entertaining clash at St James’ Park, with all of the home side’s goals coming during an 11-minute first-half spree; Lewis Miley and Jacob Murphy on target, before Alexander Isak struck twice.
Alexander Isak scores for Newcastle
Despite having lost three of their previous four Premier League games beforehand, Eddie Howe’s team have moved back up to fifth, thereby occupying the final Champions League spot, ahead of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup Final dress rehearsal, facing champions-elect Liverpool at Anfield.
The Toon Army certainly have a strong side to get behind, but just imagine how good they would be if they had not been forced to sell one of their most prized assets. Spoiler; he might have even more potential than Anthony Gordon.
Anthony Gordon's amazing rise at Newcastle
When Gordon joined Newcastle from Everton in January 2023 for a reported £45m, becoming, at the time, the club’s second-most expensive signing of all-time, many were questioning the price tag.
Tim Sherwood, who won the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers, believed Gordon was “overpriced”, although he’s since admitted he was wrong, proved so by the winger’s form.
Chris Waugh of the Athletic describes the 24-year-old as ‘durable, pacy, direct, hard-working, versatile and has end-product’ adding ‘most wingers have some of those traits, but [Gordon] possess them all’, while Ben McAleer of the Guardian believes he has ‘set the Premier League alight’ since making the move to Tyneside.
This form has also earned Gordon international recognition,
He was player of the tournament as England won the U21 Euros in the summer of 2023, before making his senior international debut against Brazil last March, opening his account for the Three Lions during November’s 5-0 hammering of the Republic of Ireland at Wembley.
Alongside, Gordon believes Newcastle striker Isak to be “the best in Europe” and together they form quite the partnership, so just imagine how formidable the Magpies’ front line would be, had they been able to keep a top-class right-winger.
Where Are They Now
Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast’s Where Are They Now series.
Newcastle's biggest transfer regret
Even though Yankuba Minteh never actually made an appearance for Newcastle, they’re being made to regret his sale.
The Gambian joined Newcastle from Danish Superligaen side Odense Boldklub for a reported fee of £6.5m in June 2023, immediately loaned out to Feyenoord, with the plan for him to be integrated into the first team a year later.
Minteh scored 11 goals in 37 appearances for the Eredivisie giants, averaging a goal every 181 minutes, most notably on target in the Champions League at Celtic Park, before bagging a brace during a famous 6-0 demolition of Ajax in De Klassieker.
So, despite the plans being for Minteh to return to Newcastle, he never did, sold to Brighton last June for a reported price tag of £33m, with the Magpies forced to sell both he, as well as Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest, in order to avoid a PSR breach.
Well, it appears as though the Seagulls snapped up a bargain, with the Athletic’s Ryan Adsett describing the 20-year-old as a “world-class talent”, while Matt Furniss of Opta’s the Analyst believes Brighton supporters are rightfully excited.
Speaking on Sky Sports in August, Jamie Carragher asserted that Newcastle “are going to rue” the sale of Minteh, a claim that is certainly coming to fruition.
By bagging a brace against Chelsea on Valentine’s night, Minteh took his tally to five Premier League goals this season, on top of his four assists, so let’s assess how he compares to Gordon.

While Gordon’s surface-level statistics, goals and assists, are superior to Minteh’s, the Gambian’s per-90 numbers are more impressive. He’s averaging a higher take-on success and more goal-creating actions per 90.
Meanwhile, the Brighton winger boasts a higher shot on target percentage too. This suggests that, two years four years Gordon’s junior, his ceiling may well be bigger. Just take a look at the company he’s now in…
Of players who have attempted 70+ dribbles this season, only eight have a higher take-on success percentage than Minteh, namely Amad, Mikkel Damsgaard, Rayan Aït-Nouri, Jadon Sancho, Mohamed Salah, Antoine Semenyo, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Jérémy Doku.
So, what a pair of wide-attackers Minteh and Gordon would’ve been with Isak in the middle; no wonder Howe believes the Profit and Sustainability Rules are “not right”.

West Indies collapsed from 32 without loss to 67 for 6, as the hosts bounced back with a 44-run win after the loss to India

West Indies’ batting woes continued as they went down to South Africa by 44 runs in the second match of the women’s T20I tri-series in East London. After Marizanne Kapp’s fifty propelled South Africa to 141, Masabata Klaas’ four-wicket haul helped them bounce back from the opening game defeat to India.Kapp lifts South Africa A spin-heavy West Indies restricted South Africa to a competitive total on a slow and sluggish surface at Buffalo Park. After being asked to bowl first, Shamilia Connell dismissed Anneke Bosch early in the fourth over when she was caught by Britney Cooper while trying to heave it over the mid-off fielder. They ended the powerplay at 43 for 1, with Laura Wolvaardt playing a steady knock and bringing out her trademark cover drives. However, the opener was out for 25 in the ninth over, off Shamika Gajnabi when Wolvaardt tried to slice a full ball on the off stump, and was caught by the wicketkeeper. Lack of footwork cost her her wicket. It was Sune Luus and Kapp who lifted South Africa, as Kapp once again thrived at No.3. Walking in at 58 for 2 in the ninth over, the duo stitched together a key 63-run stand off 53 balls for the third wicket. Though the surface was conducive to slow bowlers, aiding them with turn and uneven bounce, Kapp played a cautious yet crucial knock to propel the team to an above-par total. The seam-bowling allrounder brought up the team’s hundred in the 16th over when she hit Gajnabi for a straight four, with the scoring rate hovering between six and seven during her innings. In her innings of 52 from 43 balls – her second half-century in the format – Kapp unleashed four boundaries, converting low full tosses and half volleys to fours, and also keeping the scorecard ticking. Her partner Luus struck 30 off 26 deliveries with three fours. The 18th over by Hayley Matthews saw both the set batters back in the dugout: Luus was run-out while Kapp was caught at long-off when she heaved a tossed-up delivery to try and up the scoring rate.West Indies used seven bowlers on Saturday, but eventually it didn’t prove enough to end their losing streak in T20Is since October last year.South Africa’s Klaas act Scoring never looked effortless in East London, especially for West Indies, who had lost eight of their previous nine T20Is. That their star allrounder Stafanie Taylor had to miss out didn’t help their cause too. Taylor is still working herself back to full fitness after recovering from the injury she suffered while batting in the ODI series against New Zealand in September last year.West Indies had made six changes to the XI that played against England in their previous T20I in December, still trying to find a partner to open the batting with Matthews. If Aaliyah Alleyne had opened the batting for the home series against England, they tried Britney Cooper on Saturday. But Cooper perished while trying to clear the mid-off fielder, and became Klaas’ first victim. They never looked comfortable in the chase, as West Indies collapsed from 32 for 0 to 67 for 6. Three of those six wickets went to Klaas, who was on a hat-trick in the tenth over when she removed Matthews and Gajnabi off successive deliveries. While Matthews tried to slice and was caught at backward point, Gajnabi was trapped lbw.Matthews tried to hold fort by scoring a patient 35-ball 23 before being dismissed. Cooper, Shamilia Connell and Shemaine Campbelle got to double figures but the target was far out of their reach.Klaas, who came back in the 19th over to finish her quota, removed Afy Fletcher with a toe-crushing yorker to finish with a career-best 4 for 21.
Leeds United face Millwall at Elland Road tonight looking to return to winning ways after falling to a first Championship defeat since November against Portsmouth on Sunday.
Daniel Farke will want to see a reaction from his side as they look to further bolster their push for promotion as the season gradually approaches its conclusion.
The Whites have already received a boost ahead of the clash with Alex Neil’s side, with promotion rivals Sheffield United and Burnley both dropping points at home against Bristol City and West Brom last night.
However, if Farke’s side are to avoid following suit, multiple changes may need to be made from the side that lost on the South Coast at the weekend, handing them the best chance of extending their lead at the summit.
One player in particular needs to be dropped from the side, with his performance against Pompey below the levels expected of a player pushing for a return to the Premier League.
Why Aaronson needs to be dropped against Millwall
Attacking midfielder Brenden Aaronson returned to Leeds in the summer after spending last season on loan at Union Berlin following relegation from England’s top flight.
The American international has posted eight goals and two assists in his 36 league appearances to date, only managing one of those contributions since the turn of the year.
His showing against Portsmouth on Sunday afternoon was an unacceptable one, failing to deliver in the final third and unable to prevent the side from falling to defeat.
The 24-year-old only managed 21 touches, completing just 11 passes, but also lost 100% of the duels that he entered – highlighting how disappointing in and out of possession.
After such a disappointing showing, Farke must take action and drop him from the side, needing to hand one player a needed start to try and claim an important victory.
The player who Farke needs to start against Millwall
Since the start of the campaign, the Whites have often had a very settled side with very few changes made – mainly only occurring due to injuries or suspension.
Despite Aaronson’s poor form, he’s started every single game since the end of August, with the manager needing to take him out of the firing line and hand a start to Largie Ramazani this evening.
The Belgian joined in an £11m deal from Almeria in the summer but has struggled with injuries, returning to first team action over the last couple of weeks.
The 24-year-old has found starts hard to come by after his big-money transfer, appearing from the off just seven times in 2024/25, but still managing to register four goals and two assists in the process.
Ramazani, who’s previously been labelled “electric” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, came off the bench against Pompey at the weekend, looking to make an impact after falling behind.
During his 22 minutes on the pitch, he registered 11 touches and completed six passes whilst also completing 100% of his crosses – producing an encouraging showing in such a short period.

While he’s primarily a winger, Farke could look to shift him centrally or even opt for Daniel James or Manor Solomon to move inside and allow for Ramazani to enter the attack at Aaronson’s expense.
Sunday’s defeat was a disappointing one for the club, especially after their recent form, which has seen their phenomenal unbeaten run lead them to the top of the table.
Given the dropped points from their rivals last night, it’s pivotal that Farke’s side return to winning ways, putting them one step closer to ending their two-year absence from the top flight.

More than at most Champions League-level clubs, plenty of players come and go at Celtic, due to the high turnover the Scottish Premiership champions experience in a high portion of summer transfer windows.
This was especially the case during Ange Postecoglou’s two-year tenure, with the Australian signing a whopping 29 players during his relatively brief reign.
Ange Postecoglou of Celtic
Now, the player that Graham Falk of the Scotsman ranks as the second-least impactful of all 29 of Postecoglou’s signings, has just made a multi-million-pound move across the Atlantic, despite making barely any impression in Glasgow.
Once upon a time, he wanted to follow in the footsteps of the great Virgil van Dijk but that never happened.
Celtic's search for the next Virgil van Dijk
Given what he has gone on to achieve in the game, it’s pretty hard to dispute the fact that Van Dijk is Celtic’s best centre-back of modern times.
The Dutchman arrived in Glasgow from Groningen for a reported fee of £1.74m in 2013, with then manager Neil Lennon claiming he said to the defender on his first day “enjoy yourself… you won’t be here long” as he knew van Dijk was destined for the top.
In total, the Dutchman made 115 appearances for Celtic, winning two Premiership titles and the League Cup, before being sold to Southampton for £11.5m in 2015, with the Hoops also receiving a 10% sell-on fee when he moved to Liverpool for a then world-record £75m in January 2018.
Virgil van Dijk for Celtic
Since, Celtic have simply been searching for the next van Dijk, so here’s a selection of all the centre-backs to make 100+ appearances since the Dutchman’s departure in August 2015.
As the table outlines, just four Celtic centre-halves have surpassed 100 appearances since van Dijk’s sale, underlining the flux experienced in that position, with defenders such as Carl Starfelt only at the club for a very brief period, while, at the other end of the spectrum, given that Marvin Compper made just one appearance in hoops, his Celtic career is more of an abstract concept.
Meantime, a highly-rated defender, who also appeared only once for the club, that almost every Celtic supporter worldwide will have forgotten about, appears to be getting his career back on track, having just made a big-money move.
Where Are They Now
Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast’s Where Are They Now series.
Celtic's forgotten defender now MLS-bound
Osaze Urhoghide was one of Postecoglou’s very first signings as Celtic manager, arriving from Sheffield Wednesday for a compensation fee reported to be £200,000.
Upon his arrival, Postecoglou stated he believed the then-21-year-old possessed “all the attributes… to become a top player”, describing him as “a modern defender..good athletically” and “quick”, with Mark Walker of the Scottish Sun labelling him a ‘beast and a monster’.
Despite this high praise, Urhoghide made just one competitive appearance for Celtic, an unused substitute on 17 occasions, this coming in a dead-rubber Europa League group stage game against Real Betis.
Considering this was a player who wanted to emulate Van Dijk in Glasgow, he didn’t live up to the immense potential expected of him.
Thus, he then spent the next 18 months on loan at Oostende in Belgium, before being allowed to join Ligue 2 side Amiens on a free transfer in 2023.
Well, he must have done something right during his 41 appearances for les Licornes because, last month, he joined Major League Soccer side FC Dallas for a reported fee of £2.5m, starting all three of the Texas-based club’s MLS fixtures so far this season.
That fee may not seem sky-high, but it’s certainly noteworthy considering, in their three decades of existence, Dallas have only paid a higher transfer fee for four players, with this the highest fee the club have ever paid for a defender, the previous record the $1m spent to sign Geovane Jesus from Cruzeiro.
It’s also noteworthy when you compare it with those still at Parkhead. Indeed, the £2.5m fee puts him above the likes of super-sub Hyun-jun Yang who, in the eyes of Transfermarkt, is rated at £2.1m.
Yang
So, does this prove Celtic were wrong to sell Urhoghide? No. But does this also prove players’ development is not linear, and just because it didn’t work out at one club does not mean it can’t work out at another? Yes.

Tim Southee could come into consideration for New Zealand’s ODI World Cup captaincy as well as Tom Latham who has recently had the role in the absence of the injured Kane Williamson.Although Williamson has begun rehab following surgery on the ACL injury he sustained in the IPL he is still considered unlikely to make the World Cup in October.Latham has been the regular stand-in when Williamson has been absent in recent years and was in charge for both legs in Pakistan where the T20Is were shared 2-2 and the home side claimed the ODIs 4-1.Southee, who is New Zealand’s Test captain, was one of the players unavailable for that tour due to involvement in the IPL.”That’s something that still needs to be worked out,” New Zealand coach Gary Stead said of the World Cup job. “Tim is captaining the Test team as well. Tom has had plenty of white-ball experience for us in the past. Thought he captained really well [in Pakistan] with a number of guys he didn’t know much about and that’s always a challenge.”Should Williamson not make the tournament there will also be a key batting slot to fill at No. 3. Devon Conway and Finn Allen were two other top-order batters at the IPL. Meanwhile in Pakistan, Daryl Mitchell had an excellent ODI series with two centuries while Will Young also averaged 48, although Stead said no decisions had been made about who would fill the position moving forward.Related

“Every opportunity Daryl gets in a number of different positions he keeps putting his hand up. He’s shown his value to the team overall,” Stead told reporters in Auckland. “[Will’s] had a really good start to his international career, especially the white-ball game, and he’s had some of the Associate teams where he’s scored big runs but it was really pleasing to see how he went against what is a real quality attack when you think of Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, Shadab Khan.”Stead indicated that it remained the case that “11 or 12″ of the World Cup squad were likely locked in with those remaining positions still requiring some discussion. The schedule for the tournament is yet to be confirmed – and will likely only come out after the IPL – with Stead adding that where they play certain teams may have a bearing on the final selections. He was hopeful that Kyle Jamieson, who is recovering from back surgery, will be in the frame.”We’ve got three months before we need to land this so have time on our side,” he said. “We still haven’t got a World Cup draw yet, we don’t know where we are playing so it’s pretty hard to nail everything down until we get those things in place.”Stead’s own contract is also up after the World Cup and a decision on his future is likely to be made before the tournament.New Zealand now have a lengthy break from international cricket before next coming together for a three-match T20I series against UAE in Dubai in August.
