Striker facing criticism from fansGiven reminder by O'SheaUrged to rediscover previous formFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Rashford, who has spent his entire career with United, was a fan favourite at Old Trafford but has received increasing criticism from supporters due to an alarming decline in performance ever since he signed a new contract with the club in the summer of 2023. But former Red Devils defender John O'Shea has pointed out that homegrown stars have never been immune from criticism and urged Rashford to bounce back to his form of the 2022-23 campaign, when he scored 30 goals in all competitions.

AdvertisementWHAT O'SHEA SAID

O'Shea told GOAL: "That’s the standards you set, I remember playing in the team and Ryan Giggs, one of the most decorated players, was getting lots of grief. Top Manchester United players have got grief. They'll have spells in their careers and they'll have to show that resilience to bounce back and reach the levels they got to. Marcus will be similar in that because he’s a goalscorer, he creates and he assists, so if he’s not doing that there’s going to be more scrutiny."

Rashford had a miserable last campaign, scoring just eight goals in all competitions and angering fans for his off-pitch behaviour, which included going to a nightclub in Belfast and missing training the next day. He made a flying start to the Ruben Amorim era, scoring the opening goal in the coach's dugout debut at Ipswich and also netting twice against Everton. However, he was left out of the starting line-up for the last two games against Arsenal and Nottingham Forest.

Injured Ollie Pope doubtful for Test series opener against India

England batter sustained a left thigh muscle injury while playing for Surrey in the Vitality Blast

George Dobell10-Jul-2021Ollie Pope is an injury doubt for the first Test of the LV= Insurance series against India after sustaining a thigh muscle injury.Pope, the 23-year-old batter, sustained the injury while playing for Surrey against Kent in the Vitality Blast on July 2. A statement from the ECB said: “Pope has been ruled out until England’s LV= Insurance Test Series against India after suffering a left thigh muscle injury.”The ECB and Surrey fitness teams will work together to deliver Pope’s rehabilitation with a focus for him to be available to return for the first Test against India.”That first Test starts on August 4 in Nottingham. While Pope has not reached 35 in his 15 most recent Test innings, he was highly likely to retain his spot in England’s Test side as he is seen as perhaps the most talented young first-class batter in the English game. His injury could open the door for a return for Dawid Malan, who has continued to impress with his temperament as much as his form with the bat in his opportunities in England’s white-ball side. Dan Lawrence could also prove a beneficiary.Pope’s injury is also likely to minimise his involvement in The Hundred. Had he been fit, he was likely to have been available for Welsh Fire’s first three fixtures. The tournament has been best with withdrawals with a host of overseas players pulling out due to the congested international schedules and complications around travel in the time of Covid.

Leeds fans should be excited about 19 y/o academy gem who’s the next Joseph

The international break could well have come for Leeds United at the worst possible time, killing any momentum that was potentially building after the Whites had finally found their feet this season.

Two draws and a defeat in all competitions was a nightmare start for Daniel Farke's men, but that has since been forgotten about with two wins on the spin in the Championship, with the second-tier promotion hopefuls now up to a promising fourth spot in the early league standings.

Mateo Joseph has been a bright spark across those two wins, with Farke and Co hopeful that their young Spanish hotshot can continue to lead the line effectively, even during more tense contests to come down the line.

Joseph's rise at Leeds

This does feel like the season where Joseph really comes into his own in the senior fold, removed from the comforts of U21 football and unleashed onto the Championship in full force.

Bagging 19 goals for the U21s across 33 games, it was only a matter of time before Farke began to regularly play him from the start in the men's games, having been the manager to give Archie Gray his big break last campaign.

He hasn't quite been as free-flowing in front of goal as in his golden youth days yet, but his instinctive finish against Hull City saw him finally get off the mark for the new second-tier campaign, after cleverly connecting with Manor Solomon's cross.

It has actually been Joseph's creativity that has stood out over his ability to rifle an effort home, with two assists managed from four league games, as both of those assists allowed Leeds to win away at Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 to secure their first three points.

Far more muscular and confident in appearance than the youthful Joseph that fired home two excellent strikes away at Chelsea in the FA Cup last season, the still raw Whites number 19 will hope he can develop even more and become an even deadlier finisher the men's team can rely on in big moments.

Thorp Arch talent Luca Thomas will take inspiration from Joseph's rise from being once an U21 goal machine to now a member of Farke's main XI and aim to replicate it as a potent goalscorer himself at youth level.

Thomas' statistics at youth level

Thomas has been a consistent source of goals in the U18 and U21 structures for some time now, with the audacious strike against Newcastle United below happening all the way back in January 2023.

Across 56 games, the clinical 19-year-old attacker has helped himself to a very impressive goal return of 30, with Joseph only scoring 20 from 37 clashes when he was exclusively strutting his stuff on youth pitches.

Already accumulating two goals from two appearances during the infancy of the new Premier League 2 campaign, it feels like only a matter of time before the "class" youngster – as he was labelled by Leeds U21s commentator Thomas Hill last year – gets his moment to shine in the senior spotlight.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast's In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

Capable of playing down either flank, as well as terrifying defenders as a centre-forward, Farke could grow to love having Thomas in and around the first-team, having also taken a shining to Gray last season for his flexibility to slot into spaces in the side when needed.

Joseph's story at Elland Road is only starting, away from any young stars aiming to replicate his ascent, with the 20-year-old keen to fire in more goals moving forward that could see the Whites triumphantly return to the Premier League.

Leeds messed up selling "unplayable" ace who's now worth more than Ramazani

Ancelotti has a contract until 2026 at RealShaky start to the season had put him under pressureItalian discusses future and links to RomaFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Ancelotti’s future at Real Madrid has been a topic of debate throughout the current campaign. Despite his success in stabilising the club’s domestic and European campaigns, including a notable victory over Atalanta in the Champions League, whispers of an exit have refused to fade. Earlier this year, the Italian was heavily linked with a move to manage Brazil’s national team before he ultimately extended his Madrid contract until 2026.

Advertisement(C)Getty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Recently, Ancelotti has been linked with a move to Rome given his ties to Roma run deep. He spent eight years at the Italian club as a player, transitioning from a young Serie A debutant to team captain and a regular starter for the national team. His tenure with the Giallorossi was marked by significant achievements, including the 1982-83 Serie A title and four Coppa Italia triumphs.

WHAT ANCELOTTI SAID

During an appearance on , Ancelotti addressed the rumours, maintaining his commitment to Real Madrid but leaving the door ajar to future possibilities.

"Claudio Ranieri is a friend and he's doing very well at Roma, I'm very happy and attached to the Giallorossi club, I haven't forgotten the years I spent there as a kid," he said.

“But there's a world of difference between saying and doing and I'm happy here and I absolutely don't want to think about my future."

However, he added: "The circle never closes in Madrid, when you win a title you always think about the next one to win. And that's a good thing, this keeps me motivated. I like coaching every day, it's something I haven't considered yet. I don't know if Real Madrid will be my last team as a coach. I have a two-year contract. You never know how long you stay… contracts can be broken but can also be extended!”

After a brief winter break, Real Madrid are gearing up for their first fixture of the New Year. They will face Valencia in an away match on January 3 as they aim to maintain their strong form in La Liga.

More touches than Palmer: 8/10 Chelsea star now simply can’t be dropped

Chelsea put in a commanding performance against West Ham United to secure a 3-0 win and their third of the Premier League season.

The Blues put their London rivals to the sword, dominating in transition to dispatch the Hammers. It was their second away win in the top flight this term, after beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 6-2 at Molineux.

Nicolas Jackson scored two goals in the opening 18 minutes to put his side in a very comfortable position before even a quarter of the game had gone by. His first came from a pass by Jadon Sancho, which the Senegalese striker met with great intent, driving into the Hammers box and slotting through Alphonse Areola’s legs.

His second was set up by a carving pass by Moises Caicedo, who also put in a superb showing. It split the Hammers’ defence open, and Jackson simply ran onto it and slotted home with the outside of his foot.

The 22-year-old set up the Blues’ third. It was scored by Cole Palmer to give his side an almost unassailable lead.

There were some superb performances from Chelsea, not least from Jackson and Caicedo. Palmer was as superb as ever and continued his sparkling form in a Chelsea shirt.

Palmer’s stats vs. West Ham

It has been a simply astounding start to life at Chelsea for England international Palmer. As per StatMuse on X, the 22-year-old has 39 combined goals and assists in 38 Premier League games for the West London outfit. With 16 goals and 11 assists, he is the only player in the English top flight with ten or more goals and ten or more assists in 2024, according to StatMuse.

On Saturday, he was no different, getting on the end of Jackson’s pass, driving into the Hammers’ penalty box and firing past French goalkeeper Areola, into the top corner, before dropping his iconic ‘Cold Palmer’ celebration. It was a superb finish from the Manchester City academy graduate.

The attacker’s stats, via Sofascore, were also impressive. Palmer had 30 touches of the ball at the London Stadium, with a 78% pass accuracy, He created one big chance, won five fouls and an impressive six out of eight ground duels.

Tom Olver of The Metro also thought the 22-year-old was impressive in East London. He gave Chelsea’s number 20 an 8/10 for his efforts, praising him for the way he ‘combined brilliantly’ with Jackson for the third goal.

It was not just Palmer who impressed at the London Stadium, with another of his teammates also putting in an impressive performance.

Tosin Adarabioyo’s stats vs. West Ham

The player in question here is defender Tosin Adarabioyo. After joining on a free transfer in the summer, the 26-year-old, who is also formerly of the Man City academy, made his first Premier League start for the Blues.

It is perhaps no coincidence that Enzo Maresca’s side kept back-to-back clean sheets for the first time this season with Adarabioyo in the side. Although he only played 28 minutes in the previous game against Bournemouth, he helped the Blues keep a 1-0 lead intact and was crucial against the Hammers, too.

The former Fulham defender had 61 touches at the London Stadium, more than Palmer, and had an 88% pass accuracy to go with that. He also made an impressive five clearances, showing just how important his defensive contributions were. Adarabioyo also completed one dribble, at a success rate of 100%.

His performance was also rated highly by Olver, who gave him an 8/10 rating just like Palmer received. The Metro journalist credited the defender for being ‘an assured presence at the back’ against Julen Lopetegui’s side.

He has certainly shown he has the quality to start at centre-back for Chelsea. Given he now has helped keep two clean sheets in a row in the Premier League, Maresca must surely continue to back Adarabioyo and give him another start next up against Brighton.

On the evidence of yesterday’s showing, the summer signing has certainly warranted an extended run in the side.

Rashford's future at Old Trafford remains uncertain as he has been linked with a move away from United after being frozen out by Ruben Amorim. The English forward has missed the club's last six matches across all competitions and is now considering a loan move away from the Red Devils in the January transfer window.

Per , Borussia Dortmund are the latest club to have shown interest in signing the Red Devils outcast on loan. The Bundesliga side had signed Jadon Sancho last January on a short-term deal after he was banished from the United squad by then-manager Erik ten Hag. Similarly, the German side are now planning to rope in Rashford to solve their attacking woes. The only issue, however, that persists is the England international's massive wages of more than £325,000 per week and the Premier League giants are hoping that the majority of the amount will be covered by the club he moves to.

Other than Dortmund, AC Milan and Juventus are also keen on roping in Rashford alongside several Premier League clubs. The striker also had offers from Saudi Pro League clubs, but he reportedly rejected them.

Since joining Sunderland from Birmingham City for a modest £1.5 million in 2023, Bellingham has made a tremendous impact at the Stadium of Light. The talented midfielder has already registered four goals and three assists in 23 appearances this season, playing a crucial role in Sunderland’s push for promotion. The Black Cats currently sit fourth in the Championship, with Bellingham emerging as one of their standout players.

According to apart from United & Arsenal, Crystal Palace, Tottenham Hotspur, and Borussia Dortmund – Jude Bellingham’s former team – are among the clubs closely monitoring his progress. His elder brother Jude famously left Birmingham City for Borussia Dortmund in 2020 for a reported fee of £30 million. At Dortmund, Jude developed into one of the world’s top midfielders, eventually securing a move to Real Madrid in the summer of 2023.

With a similar career trajectory in sight, Jobe may consider prioritizing game time and development opportunities abroad. Reports suggest that he is weighing the prospect of joining a top European club where he could gain more regular first-team experience at a higher level, mirroring the path taken by his sibling.

While Jobe’s potential transfer fee could reach as high as £20 million, Sunderland are determined to hold onto their starlet. The club tied him down to a new contract in the summer, extending his stay at the Stadium of Light until 2028. This long-term deal strengthens Sunderland’s bargaining position and reflects their confidence in Jobe’s role as a key figure in their promotion aspirations.

Bellingham’s immediate focus remains on helping Sunderland continue their promotion charge. The midfielder is expected to feature in an FA Cup third-round clash against Stoke City on Saturday followed by a league fixture against Burnley on January 18.

Their first Stansfield: Birmingham must regret ever signing £12m flop

Birmingham City’s big spending habits have been well documented now, with the Blues acquiring a whopping 17 new faces this summer.

Jay Stansfield rejoining the Blues permanently after a bright loan spell in the Championship was the purchase that stole the headlines, and for good reason, with the ex-Fulham striker leaving behind Craven Cottage for good for an eye-watering £20m fee.

He has already proven himself to be a deadly striker at League One level, with Wrexham and Rotherham United already feeling the 21-year-old’s goalscoring wrath in league action.

Stansfield's form this season

Stansfield already has three strikes next to his name playing in the third tier, with a double coming his way on his League One debut back with the Blues against Phil Parkinson’s Red Dragons.

The much-talked-about youngster then backed up that excellent showing at St. Andrew’s with another standout display away at the Millers, as the electric Blues number 28 looped an effort over the Rotherham goalkeeper’s head in the first half to set his team on their way to a confident 2-0 win.

The expensive summer buy will aim to keep up this top form across the season to come, as Birmingham also strive to make their stay in League One as short as possible, by instantly winning promotion back up to the Championship.

Whilst the ambitious Blues look to have got the purchase of Stansfield spot on, they haven’t always reaped the rewards of every deal that has got off the ground, with this striker joining with a big reputation in 2021 who unfortunately underwhelmed.

Scott Hogan's transfer to Birmingham

Scott Hogan once cost Birmingham’s arch rivals Aston Villa a hefty £12m to get into the building in 2017, after he had garnered a reputation for being an ice-cold goal machine in the EFL at Brentford.

Firing home 21 goals from 36 games for the Bees before this switch to Villa Park, Hogan would then struggle in his new pressurised surroundings, with a lacklustre goal return of ten strikes from 61 games, before making the controversial move across enemy lines to St. Andrew’s official.

Hogan was never quite able to recapture his Brentford best at Birmingham, with another move not exactly going to plan for the now 32-year-old striker, who very much struggled last campaign as the Blues fell down to League One.

He only managed three goal contributions the entire second tier season, as Stansfield upstaged the ageing attacker with 12 league strikes from 43 clashes.

In the end, Hogan would only manage to register a disappointing 36 strikes from 158 games in total, with the former Bees man never quite living up his billing as a statement signing in the form of Stansfield.

With Birmingham going in a different direction this summer with lavish buy after lavish buy, Hogan would end up seeing his contract be ripped up in the West Midlands, as the veteran EFL presence now finds himself unemployed and on the search for a new club to call home.

He did also have many moments of magic donning a Birmingham strip, but there was no place for sentimentality on the end of Davies’ men this summer, as the Blues aim to make promotion back up to the second tier look like a breeze with Stansfield now up top.

Jos Buttler, Moeen Ali star as spinners help England to series-levelling win

Stand-in captain leads way with bat before Moeen, Rashid and Parkinson share five wickets

George Dobell18-Jul-2021England’s spinners combined to secure a series-levelling victory in the second T20I of the series against Pakistan in Leeds. Adil Rashid, Matt Parkinson and Moeen Ali claimed five wickets for 87 runs in their 11 overs combined as England defended a total of 200 to secure a 45-run win.It means the series will be decided in the third and final game to be played at Emirates Old Trafford on Tuesday. For much of the afternoon, this was a pitch that looked full of runs. Certainly seamers gained little joy from it, with England’s total of 200 appearing little better than par when Pakistan’s openers started their chase by plundering 43 from their first five overs. But England’s spinners gained a surprising amount of assistance from the surface. Sohaib Maqsood and Azam Khan were both stumped off Rashid and Parkinson respectively, while Fakhar Zaman was bowled by a beauty from Moeen, which gripped, turned and took his off stump. With Mohammad Rizwan hitting a full toss back at Rashid and Mohammad Hafeez mishitting to the leg-side boundary, Pakistan lost 5 for 34 in six overs in the middle of their innings, which effectively defined the game.On a surface on which seamers experienced little other than heartache – Chris Jordan bowled only one over in the Pakistan innings – it was a performance that showed the depth and versatility of England’s bowling attack and will, perhaps, provide some encouragement ahead of the T20 World Cup on the slow, dry wickets of the UAEEarlier, a high-quality half-century from Jos Buttler helped England to a competitive total of 200 on another decent batting track. Buttler had not played a game since sustaining a calf injury during the victory over Sri Lanka in Cardiff almost a month ago, but you would never have known it to watch him.Timing the ball beautifully, Buttler produced a series of conventional – if unusually sweetly hit – strokes off front and back foot, as well as scooping Mohammad Hasnain for a six over fine leg.Although nobody went on to make an especially large individual score, Player of the Match Moeen Ali’s 36 from 16 balls followed by Liam Livingstone’s 38 from 23 ensured the innings retained momentum and England ended the 14th over with 150 on the board. While the innings fell away a little from that point – England subsided from 137-3 to 200 all-out, managing only 10 from the final two overs of their innings – it proved more than enough as Pakistan’s batters struggled against the spin. What next for Morgan?
As a key character in the revolution that took England from world chumps to World Champs, Eoin Morgan’s reputation is assured. He remains a figure of huge authority within the England set-up, too, and will probably remain once after his playing days are over. But his decision to leave himself out for this match was intriguing. While he had indicated ahead of the first game of this series that England intended to use it to take a look at different combinations and options, the fact is he has reached 30 only twice in his 17 most-recent international innings. And in his last 15 T20Is, he is averaging 12.10 at a strike-rate of 124.74.None of this means his place in the side is in immediate doubt. Batting in the middle order is notoriously tough in T20 cricket and England have very few contenders for the spot. Morgan has a vast amount of credit in the bank. But, given the competition for places among England batters – the likes of Alex Hales, Joe Root and Tom Banton are among those currently unable to break into the side and Ben is Stokes currently out as he continues his rehabilitation from a finger injury – and Jos Buttler’s presence a natural replacement as captain, that is a run of form that is bound to start raising concerns.Moeen Ali played an aggressive cameo•Getty ImagesImad’s contribution
At first glance, Imad Wasim’s figures of 2 for 37 don’t look especially pretty. He conceded almost 10 an over, after all, and was struck for three sixes. At one stage in his first over, he had bowled only three legitimate deliveries and already conceded 11 runs; he could have been forgiven for thinking he was in for a rough afternoon. But he also claimed two important wickets. And, despite bowling two overs in the Powerplay, delivered 11 dot balls. Nobody in the game bowled more. On another flat surface with relatively short boundaries, it was an impressive contribution and, on another day, those early wickets of Jason Roy and Dawid Malan could have proved decisive.Tailing off
One of the characteristics of England’s limited-overs cricket in recent years has been their commitment to the positive approach. This has routinely seen the lower-middle order continue to attack even if the top order have been blown away with batters as good as Adil Rashid (who has 10 first-class centuries) sometimes coming in as low as No. 11.Might that be changing a little? While there is no obvious alteration in England’s approach – they continue to attack all the way down the order – there are, perhaps, one or two questions about the depth of their batting. In this side, for example, Tom Curran came in at No. 7 (he had only batted as high in one previous T20I) and Rashid came in at No. 9. It meant the top order didn’t have quite the same safety net as before and might, in time, result in them playing slightly more careful cricket. This was not England’s first choice side, of course. The likes of Sam Curran and Chris Woakes might well come into the side ahead of the T20 World Cup. But the fact that they were bowled out in successive matches for the first time in their T20I history – albeit having made 200 on each occasion – was a reminder, perhaps, about the value of such batting depth.Eyes on Livingstone
So vital a player has Liam Livingstone suddenly become in this side, that even his dismissals are entertaining. Having just hit a vast six – the ball disappeared over the top of the new stand which borders the rugby ground; as big a hit as most have seen – he was run out when an attempted scoop somehow found its way to square leg. And while Haris Rauf had knocked off one bail with his elbow before completing the run-out, the other one remained in place to ensure the stumps could still be broken. The groan that went round the ground suggested that Livingstone has quickly become something of a crowd favourite – a remarkable thing for a Lancashire man in Leeds.
