Taskin Ahmed on Blessing Muzarabani face-off: I told him to focus on bowling rather than abusing me

The pair exchanged heated words during the second over of the day’s play

Mohammad Isam08-Jul-2021Taskin Ahmed has said he decided against ceding any ground to Blessing Muzarabani during the duo’s heated mid-pitch face-off on day two in Harare, as a protest against what he saw as sledging from Zimbabwe’s players.Taskin, Muzarabani fined for face-pff

The heated confrontation that took place between Bangladesh’s Taskin Ahmed and Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani on the second day of the Harare Test has resulted in both players being fined 15% of their match fees.

Match referee Andy Pycroft also slapped them with one demerit point each as further punishment for getting in each other’s faces and making physical contact as well, which goes against article 2.1.12 of the ICC code of conduct.

Both Taskin and Muzarabani accepted their sanctions.

The incident took place in the second over of the day. Taskin, Bangladesh’s No. 10 batter, performed a jig after evading a short ball from Muzarabani. The Zimbabwe fast bowler seemed to exchange heated words with Taskin as he walked towards him in his follow-through. Before long, the verbal exchange took on an almost physical aspect as Muzarabani pushed his face into the grille of Taskin’s helmet. Some of Zimbabwe’s fielders had to intervene to separate the pair.”Their fast bowlers were attacking me with bouncers, and trying to get me out,” Taskin said after scoring his maiden international half-century and putting on 191 with Mahmudullah for the ninth wicket. “I think I was handling them well. Some of them were abusing me as well, but when they did it for the third time, I told him to do something with the ball rather than abusing me.”Related

Mahmudullah and Taskin Ahmed revel in comeback party

A few overs later, Mahmudullah got into an angry exchange with Victor Nyauchi, who pulled out of bowling his delivery and ran all the way to the batter. It was in reply to Mahmudullah pulling away from an earlier delivery. Zimbabwe contained their frustration for the rest of the day, although Taskin and Mahmudullah kept them on the field for two-thirds of it.Taskin said his career-best 75 off 134 balls was the first step towards him becoming a competent lower-order contributor.”I have always wanted to be a good tail-ender,” he said. “I practise batting besides my bowling. I want to improve my batting so that it can come in handy in difficult situations. All big teams have responsible tail-enders who support the set batsman at the other end.”My main target was to support (Mahmudullah) Riyad . He spoke to me constantly, reminding me that I should defend the ball on the stumps. I only tried to hit those in my zone. I got a few boundaries, but I was more concerned about batting for the team.”Taskin said Mahmudullah had motivated him by telling him Bangladesh needed to put up a big total to take some pressure of their bowlers on a batting-friendly surface. “It is a good wicket except for the first session on the first day,” Taskin said. “Riyad kept telling me that we should score as much as possible as the wicket is getting better [to bat on].”It would give the bowlers something to bowl at. He told me to play with a straight bat, not try anything big. I am a bowler after all, I might want to try a big hit. But I tried to support him.”Taskin started well with the ball, too, conceding just two runs in his first eight overs. But in his last two overs, Brendan Taylor struck him for three fours, which he said was a reminder that nothing will come easy on this pitch for the bowlers.”We have to bowl consistently and patiently, according to the field, on this wicket,” he said. “It seems easy for the batsmen. We should attack but loose balls are quite easy to play here.”

Per Sky in Germany, there is interest from Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Tottenham in signing Gittens, but they face significant obstacles if they are to convince him to move. The 20-year-old winger has been in superb form this season, scoring seven goals and providing four assists in all competitions, and has a contract until 2028; Dortmund believe that he will eventually be worth €100m.

While Gittens has no plans to make a move in January or the summer, the report makes it clear that he eventually wants to return to the Premier League. The England Under-21 international moved to Germany from Manchester City's youth academy in 2022, having failed to make a first-team breakthrough. Since his move, though, he has made 76 Dortmund appearances.

The Red Devils have put the France international on their list of targets for the role, Florian Plettenberg reports. However, Bayern Munich could also make a move for Hernandez next summer as they are in danger of seeing Alphonso Davies leave when his contract expires at the end of the season. Hernandez, 27, is a key player for Paulo Fonseca's Milan and has been trusted to wear the captain's armband in the absence of Davide Calabria.

Spirited Vidarbha run into mighty Mumbai in a contest of contrasts

While the expectations from Mumbai are always big, Vidarbha are primed for their time under the limelight

Shashank Kishore09-Mar-2024Big picture – Vidarbha vs Mumbai is domestic workhorses vs domestic superstars Is the Ranji Trophy really the finishing school for those aspiring to wear the India cap? This question has been raised several times recently, at least in the aftermath of most big selection meetings for the Test team. Then again, look at those who have earned the Test cap at home against England. Rajat Patidar, Sarfaraz Khan, Akash Deep and Devdutt Padikkal – you can say with conviction they have taken the tougher route to the India cap, and aren’t overnight IPL sensations. This “tougher route” brings us to Vidarbha, a team comprising unheralded players who toil away in anonymity most times, searching for corporate cricket gigs and club cricket stints in the UK during the off-season to ensure they are “cricket fit” when the domestic season comes around. A chance to play in the Ranji Trophy final for the first time since 2018-19 is as big as it can get. For most, it’s the most important game of their careers.Related

Tanush Kotian raises his all-round game for Mumbai

Ranji final an opportunity for Akshay Wadkar to forge his legacy

Mumbai, on the other hand, are the golden boys of the domestic scene: 41-time champs, who are now playing in their 48th final. A team that knows how to conquer big moments, one whose DNA has been etched with “unsuccessful season” tag if they don’t win. That’s enough pressure to carry into a game. Most things they do are amplified, whether they like it or not. A glorious Prithvi Shaw straight drive has people comparing him to some of the legends, even if it’s just his first set of games on a comeback trail. Musheer Khan’s impressive initiation has many wondering if he can follow in the footsteps of Sarfaraz, his older brother. Shardul Thakur’s exploits has everyone going “Lord fantastic”.Ajinkya Rahane’s Test career may have hit a dead end, but his legacy has been set in stone – having helmed India to one of their greatest Test series triumphs in Australia. His drive to pull through a wretched run of form – he has made 134 runs in 11 innings this Ranji season – while astutely leading the team and backing a young group to flourish could be legacy defining too, if it culminates in their 42nd title. In short, the expectation is big. The chatter around them, even bigger.Vidarbha have never had to content with this pressure. And the cricket they have played all season reflects that. Take the semi-final against Madhya Pradesh, where they conceded an 82-run lead and then were effectively 79 for 5 in the second innings, before Yash Rathod and Akshay Wadkar, the captain, led a stunning turnaround with a 158-run sixth-wicket stand that set MP a target of 321.Unlike Mumbai, a relatively smaller and concentrated talent pool has served as a boon. It has helped them give a longer rope to certain players purely on potential they bring to the table. Like Atharva Taide, the opener, who has repaid the faith with 529 runs in 13 innings at 44.08 – not blockbuster, but not a minor feat either. That Vidarbha are here without having any batter in the top 10 scorers and only one bowler in the top 10 wicket-takers tells you how they have pulled along as a team. It’s therefore a contest of two contrasts. The domestic workhorses against the domestic superstars. And on the evidence of what we’ve seen so far this season, the workhorses are primed for their time under the limelight, if anyone is willing to throw it on them.Run to the finalBoth sides finished with five wins in seven league games to top their respective groups. Mumbai beat Tamil Nadu inside three days on a green-tinged deck at home, while Vidarbha overturned a first-innings deficit to beat MP and prevent a repeat of the 2021-22 final.Karun Nair holds the record for the highest score in a Ranji final•PTI Players to Watch – Umesh Yadav and Shreyas IyerUmesh Yadav hasn’t been in India’s Test plans for two years now, and a road back up looks increasingly unlikely. But he has continued to put the hard yards in, having featured in seven out of nine games for Vidarbha this season. He has had decent returns too – 27 wickets at 26.77. While he hasn’t picked up a five-for yet, his quick bursts have proved game changing at different stages this season for Vidarbha. The last time Mumbai won a Ranji final (2015-16), Shreyas Iyer turned the game around with a swashbuckling century on a green top in Pune against Saurashtra. Eight years later, Iyer comes into another Ranji final under different circumstances. Having lost his central contract recently, with questions raised over his desire for Test cricket, the final is as good an opportunity as any to prove the fire still burns.Pitch and conditionsWankhede Stadium will host the final on what is confirmed to be a fresh surface. Mumbai have rolled out green-tinged decks for each of their two knockout fixtures and have an in-form pace attack to boot. Expect a similar surface with pace and carry. Mumbai’s only loss this season, however, came at Wankhede against Uttar Pradesh.Stats and trivia Seven of the top 10 wicket-takers this season are left-arm spinners. Among them, Aditya Sarwate will be the only one featuring in the Ranji final. He has currently picked up 40 wickets at an average of 17.37. Two more wickets will take him straight to the second spot. For the first time since 1971 – when Bombay beat Maharashtra – the Ranji final pits two teams from the same state geographically. Vidarbha have won both their previous finals. Mumbai have won 41 of their 47 finals. Karun Nair’s 328 is the highest individual score in a Ranji final. Having won the title twice, back-to-back, with Karnataka between 2013 and 2015, he will be gunning for his third title. With 616 runs in nine innings at 41.06, he is Vidarbha’s highest run-scorer this season.

Wolves make offer to sign £2,000-a-week teenager, they’ve had a response

Wolverhampton Wanderers have tabled a bid for an impressive teenager as they look to bolster their ranks this summer, it has been reported.

New Premier League season brings questions for Wolves

Gary O'Neil's side kick off the 2024/25 Premier League season with a trip to last season's runners up Arsenal, a game which kicks off a challenging start to the campaign. The Old Gold face Newcastle United, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Liverpool and Manchester City in their opening eight games, alongside tricky away trips to Nottingham Forest and Brighton in a brutal opening to the season.

Transfer business in the Black Country has been slow too. They have sold club captain Max Kilman to West Ham in a deal worth £40m, but are yet to bring in a replacement for the Englishman, who played every minute of their 2023/24 campaign.

Approach made: Wolves move to sign new striker who scored 18 goals in 23/24

ByCharlie Smith Aug 8, 2024

It means that they head into the final few weeks of the transfer window needing to do business to add depth to their ranks, and they look set to continue down the youthful route as they explore a move for a centre-back.

Wolves target £2k per week teenager

That comes as reports in France claim that Wolves have identified FC Nantes defender Bastien Meupiyou as a potential new addition at Molineux this summer.

As it stands, O'Neil can only call upon Toti Gomes, Craig Dawson, Santiago Beuno and the returning Yerson Mosquera in the heart of his backline, and the Old Gold feel light in that area.

According to French outlet L'Equipe, they have moved to fix that by tabling an offer for Meupiyou, who has impressed at youth level for Nantes and the French national team.

The left-footed centre-back is down to the final 12 months of his £2,000 a week deal in France, and Nantes boss Antoine Kombouaré has made it clear he must be sold this summer if he doesn't pen fresh terms with the Ligue 1 side.

Wolves had one bid turned down but have returned with a fresh 4m euro (£3.3m) bid for the teenager's services recently. However, L'Equipe relay that Nantes turned this down too, and are set to demand 10m euros (£8.5m) for the youngster to leave the club this summer despite his contract situation.

Despite being highly rated, Meupiyou has made just a single Ligue 1 appearance, seeing red nine minutes into his debut against Marseille before a torn meniscus saw him sidelined for the remainder of the season.

Given the circumstances, it seems unlikely that Wolves will stump up anything close to the asking price this summer, especially when he is set to be available for nothing in 12 months' time.

Juventus are considering a move for Benfica's out-of-favour talented centre-back Antonio Silva in the upcoming January transfer window, according to a report from Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Calciomercato). Silva's contract expires on June 30, 2027, and the defender has a €100 million buyout clause inserted in his current contract.

Juventus are desperate to add some defensive muscle to their squad, having already lost Gleison Bremer and Juan Cabal to ACL injuries earlier in the season. Losing two regulars to long-term injuries has caused a fair few problems to Bianconeri boss Thiago Motta, who would be relieved to have some reinforcements at his disposal in January. Juve have already been linked to several names in recent months, such as Lyon's Nicolas Tagliafico, PSG's Milan Skriniar, and the English duo of Harry Maguire and Eric Dier.

Silva, per Gazzetta dello Sport, is unhappy with his current role in Benfica. Manager Bruno Lage has preferred 22-year-old centre-back Tomas Araujo ahead of Silva, and now the young defender wants to seek greener pastures.

Jorge Mendes, Silva's agent, has already presented Juventus' first proposal for the player to Benfica, which was a loan with an option to buy. However, Benfica president Rui Costa rejected the offer and closed the door to any departures in January.

Mendes and Juventus sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli, though, will continue to keep working behind the scenes to ensure this move materialises in the coming weeks.

Rizwan's unbeaten 82 and Qadir's three-for seal it for Pakistan

Zimbabwe fell 12 runs short of beating Pakistan in a T20I for the first time after being well-set in chase of 150

Firdose Moonda21-Apr-2021Zimbabwe fell 12 runs short of beating Pakistan in a T20I for the first time after being well-set in chase of 150. A 56-run third wicket stand between Tinashe Kamunhukamwe and Craig Ervine put Zimbabwe on 77 for 2 in the 11th over but Babar Azam’s masterstroke to use Mohammad Hafeez’s offspin, after he has only bowled one over in 14 T20Is since November 2018, sparked a collapse that saw Zimbabwe lose 4 for 18 in 18 balls and left too much for the lower-order to do. Luke Jongwe’s 30 off 23 balls almost pulled off a coup but Haris Rauf defended 20 off the last over to ensure Pakistan took the series lead.Pakistan’s total was almost single-handedly built by Mohammad Rizwan, who racked up his fifth score of 50 runs or more in his last eight T20I innings, and made 82 of their 149. No-one else contributed more than 15 runs. Pakistan particularly struggled against Zimbabwe’s spinners – Wellington Masakadza and Wesley Madhevere, who conceded 32 runs in five overs between them – and will continue to look for solutions to make their middle-order tick.Zimbabwe’s misses and one hot take
High catches evaded Zimbabwe who put down two chances inside the powerplay that could have changed the complexion of the Pakistan innings. After dismissing Azam early, Zimbabwe had the chance to get rid of Rizwan on 13 when he top-edged a pull off Richard Ngarava in the fifth over. Kamunhukamwe had to dive forward to take the chance but only almost fell on his face for his efforts. In the next over, Fakhar Zaman drove aerially to mid-on where Sean Williams was stationed. He had to backpedal to get to the ball and did but it burst through his hands. Zaman’s drop only cost seven runs but Rizwan went on to an undefeated 82.More opportunities came. But they still went down. An over after that, Hafeez offered Masakadza a return catch but the left-arm spinner struggled to pick the ball up at head height. At the start of the 13th over, Richmond Mutumbami put down a regulation catch off Danish Aziz’s edge.In all of that, Zimbabwe managed to pull off a blinder. Ngarava timed his leap at short third man perfectly when Hafeez tried to hit a short and wide ball over the in-field and didn’t get enough on it. Ngarava took the catch to his right and held on even as his elbows hit the ground when he landed.Rizwan’s last over burst
After restricting Pakistan to 96 for 4 in 15 overs, Zimbabwe would have been eyeing keeping them to around 130 and very nearly got there. They did not concede any boundaries in overs 16, 17, 18 or 19 but Rizwan put that right with a final over burst. He waited for an Ngarava slower ball and bisected the gap between mid-off and cover-point, then went aerial over cover before Ryan Burl cut it off to ensure there was only two runs, but then cleared cow corner despite a good effort to take the catch and found fours through the covers and fine leg to take 20 off the final over. The hat-trick that could have been
Mohammad Hasnain made his return to the attack after missing out on most of the T20I series in South Africa and could have done it with a hat-trick, but for a drop. Wesley Madhevere, opening in place of Brendan Taylor, flicked the fourth ball of Hasnain’s second over to Zaman at midwicket. Zaman reacted slowly and the ball was dying on him and he couldn’t get to it despite diving forward. Madhevere was out off the next ball when he top-edged a short ball to Azam at mid-off. The ball after that debutant Tadiwanashe Marumani went in exactly the same fashion, top-edging a pull to Azam, at mid-on and was dismissed for a first-ball duck. Despite creating three chances in three balls, Hasnain had to wait until the 17th over for his hat-trick ball and it almost got him there. He bowled hard length on off stump and Jongwe cleared the front leg and swung with all his might, but missed.Legspin conundrums
Rashid Khan was the difference between Zimbabwe and Afghanistan a couple of months ago so it was hardly surprising when Pakistan immediately installed Usman Qadir in their XI for this match and at first it seemed Zimbabwe had learnt from their mistakes. Craig Ervine slogged the first ball Qadir bowled, a googly for six and took 11 runs off his first over, but got ahead of himself. When Ervine tried to reverse sweep Qadir in his next over he top-edged and was caught to depart two balls after Kamunhukamwe and spark a mini collapse. Qadir did even more damage in his third over and had Sean Williams caught on the sweep and Regis Chakbva rapped on the pads by a googly. Zimbabwe tumbled from 77 for 2 to 95 for 6, a position from which victory became difficult.

Dream Wijndal alternative: Celtic working on deal to sign £3m star

Celtic secured their place in the next round of the League Cup on Sunday with a 3-1 win for Brendan Rodgers' side against Hibernian at Parkhead.

The Hoops were knocked out of the competition at this time last season by Kilmarnock but ensured that they picked up the win and progressed thanks to two goals from Daizen Maeda and one from Nicolas Kuhn.

It was the second win against Hibernian this month after the two sides had met the previous weekend in the Scottish Premiership, with goals from Nicolas Kuhn and Callum McGregor sealing all three points at Easter Road.

Viljami Sinisalo will have to wait for his debut between the sticks but there was a second debut for Idah, whilst Kasper Schmeichel and Paulo Bernardo had already made their respective debuts earlier this month in the Premiership.

There could be more debuts to come for the Scottish giants over the coming weeks, as the summer transfer window does not officially slam shut until the end of the month.

Rodgers and the club's recruitment team still have a bit of time left to make further signings for the Hoops, and they reportedly have their eye on a new defender to bolster the squad.

Celtic keen on Premier League full-back

According to Football Insider, Celtic are working on a deal to sign left-back Owen Beck from Liverpool on a permanent deal before the end of the window.

The report claims that the Hoops are hoping to see off competition from a host of clubs in the English Championship to land the full-back's signature, with Queens Park Rangers named as one of the interested parties.

It states that the Premiership champions want to sign the 22-year-old talent on a permanent basis and that the Premier League giants are looking for a fee within the region of £3m.

Liverpool defender Owen Beck.

Football Insider reveals that the Bhoys are in the market to add another left-back to their squad because Greg Taylor is currently the manager's only senior option in that position, with Alexandro Bernabei currently out on loan.

The outlet adds that Celtic see Beck as a player with 'huge' potential who could come in and provide the Scotland international with competition for his place in the starting XI this season.

However, the Welsh dynamo is not the only left-back on the club's radar. Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph recently claimed that they are also interested in Ajax's Owen Wijndal.

The journalist claimed that the Dutch giants are open to cashing in on the left-footed defender and that Celtic have made an initial inquiry about his availability.

Owen Wijndal's form last season

The 24-year-old defender struggled to nail down a starting position at Ajax in the 2022/23 campaign, with just 15 starts in the Eredivisie, and was sent out on loan to Royal Antwerp last term.

It was a chance for the full-back to go and play regular football week-in-week-out in the Belgian top-flight and he enjoyed a solid season down the left flank.

However, it was not an outstanding year for Wijndal and there may be concerns that he would not come in at Parkhead and offer genuine competition for Taylor.

As you can see in the table above, their defensive statistics were similar at league level last term but the Celtic star's attacking work was vastly superior.

As a dominant team in the Premiership, the club's full-backs must be able to carry an attacking threat to break down low blocks and it does not appear as though Wijndal does.

His statistics in the Champions League for Antwerp last term are further evidence of that. The Dutchman did not create a single chance for his teammates in six outings in the competition, with zero key passes in five starts.

His form in Europe and domestically for the Belgian outfit suggests that Wijndal would not offer much in possession for the Hoops, which is not ideal when Taylor has the quality to be a difference-maker in the final third.

Beck would be a dream alternative to Wijndal as a £3m signing from Liverpool due to his Premiership experience and attacking quality from left-back.

What Owen Beck could bring to Liverpool

Whilst the 24-year-old Dutchman struggled to provide much creativity down the left flank for Antwerp last season, Beck spent the year on loan at Dundee and provided a big presence at the top end of the pitch.

Liverpool sent the young defender out on loan to the Premiership and he proved his quality in and out of possession throughout the season, earning himself a place in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year.

Owen Beck coming on for Liverpool.

This means that Celtic would be signing a player who has already shown that he can compete week-in-week-out in the Scottish top-flight, whereas Wijndal has no prior experience in the division, and this suggests that the Welshman could hit the ground running at Parkhead.

The 22-year-old, who was once described as a "spectacular" left-back by talent scout Jacek Kulig, made an impact in the final third with 2.3 key passes per game and six 'big chances' created in 25 league outings.

As you can see in the table above, Beck has the ability to offer far more than Wijndal in possession due to his ability to score goals and create chances from a left-back position.

He also made 1.3 more tackles and interceptions per game last term, whilst winning a similar percentage of his physical duels, and this suggests that Beck could win possession back more frequently through tackles and interceptions for Celtic.

Therefore, the £3m-rated star could be a dream alternative to the Ajax defender because of his Premiership experience, defensive work, and attacking quality, which is why Rodgers must push for this deal to be completed this month.

Kane Williamson out of second Test; Tom Latham to captain New Zealand

Will Young to bat at No. 3 after showing strong County Championship form for Durham

Matt Roller09-Jun-2021Kane Williamson, the New Zealand captain, has been ruled out of the second Test against England at Edgbaston because of a persistent elbow injury.Williamson had to miss an ODI series against Bangladesh earlier this year because of the same problem, which also caused him to miss the start of the 2021 IPL for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Tom Latham, the regular vice-captain, will lead the team in Williamson’s absence, as he did against Australia at the SCG in January 2020 and West Indies in Wellington in December.Related

“It’s not an easy decision for Kane to have to miss a Test, but we think it’s the right one,” Gary Stead, New Zealand’s head coach, said. “He’s had an injection in his elbow to relieve the irritation he’s been experiencing when he bats and a period of rest and rehabilitation will help maximise his recovery.”The injury is not expected to rule him out of the World Test Championship (WTC) final against India, which starts on June 18 at the Ageas Bowl. “The decision has been made very much with the ICC World Test Championship final at Southampton in mind and we are confident he will be ready for that match,” Stead added.”I’m sure he’ll be back [for the final],” Latham said. “From our point of view, it’s a precautionary thing. We’d love him to be available for this game but obviously we’ve got the eye on the final in a week’s time, so for Kane, it’s about giving himself the best opportunity to be fully fit and available for that game. The decision was made for him to rest and get that right for what we have coming up.”He’s fantastic as a captain. It’s well-documented how his personality and his calm nature out in the middle has been vital to this group. He’s very relaxed – doesn’t get too high, doesn’t get too low which I think has been great for this side in recent years. He’s obviously a wonderful leader and we’ve seen that throughout his captaincy career.”Williamson will be replaced in the New Zealand side by Will Young, the top-order batter who won both of his Test caps to date in the home series against West Indies in December.Young prepared for the series by playing four County Championship matches for Durham, scoring hundreds in two of his three most recent innings. He will bat at No. 3, with Latham and Devon Conway continuing to open the batting.”He’s been here a few weeks earlier [than the rest of the squad] and was playing cricket,” Latham said. “He had an opportunity back in our home summer and is coming off runs for Durham which is always nice when you get selected, especially in these conditions, so it’s another exciting opportunity for Will to put his hand up and try to put that performance on the board.”Trent Boult is set to play in the second Test•Pool/AFP via Getty ImagesLatham also confirmed that Trent Boult will return to the side, with Mitchell Santner missing through injury, though he was yet to reach a final decision on the side before training on Wednesday afternoon. Ajaz Patel and the uncapped allrounder Rachin Ravindra are the two candidates to replace Santner, while Matt Henry, Doug Bracewell and Jacob Duffy will also be considered as New Zealand look to manage their seamers’ workloads ahead of the WTC final.”It’s a case-by-case situation,” he said. “There is an eye to what we have coming up in a week’s time but on the other hand this is obviously such an important game for us. We’ve got training now and then we’ll have a look at the wicket and have those conversations around what best suits the playing XI tomorrow. We’ve got a big squad to pick from.”While New Zealand’s thinking has clearly been influenced by the proximity of the WTC final, Latham said that the squad were not taking the opportunity to win a series in England for the first time since 1999 for granted.”Beating England is higher on our priority list [than the WTC final],” he said. “We’ve got such a great opportunity to come here and try to play our brand of cricket and put on a performance that we’re proud of. Yes, there is an eye to the final in a week’s time, but our focus is solely on this game and the next five days.”To win away from home is not an easy thing around the world nowadays, and if we can put the performance on the board that we know we’re capable off, fingers crossed that will give us a good chance to be successful after the five days.”Joe Root, England’s captain, acknowledged that Williamson’s absence was a big loss for New Zealand, but insisted that his team would be “respectful” of a side that has demonstrated its depth by qualifying for the WTC final.”He’s a big gun, No.1 in the world,” Root said. “He’s one of those players you spend a lot of time thinking about how you’re going to keep him quiet and get rid of him early. It will be a huge loss for them but we’re also very respectful that New Zealand have a strong squad and are involved in the WTC final because they have strength in depth.”We saw last week a debutant coming in and getting a double hundred. We’ve got to make sure we’re clear on our plans, clued up on whoever replaces him so we can find ways of keeping him quiet and dismissing him.”

Everton have hit the jackpot on "monster" who’s worth more than Broja

It’s not been the best of starts to the season for Everton, but it’s definitely not time to panic. The Toffees go into the first international break of the campaign with three losses from three Premier League matches, the third of which was an inexcusable capitulation.

Everton were in cruise control against Bournemouth, 2-0 up at Goodison Park approaching full-time, but a stunning late turnaround left the Cherries with all three points.

Everton centre-back Michael Keane looks dejected

Jarrad Branthwaite continues to recover from a groin injury that has meant he has not yet featured this term, a huge factor behind the dismal start, and when he returns, Everton will hope to raise their level.

There’s also the addition of Armando Broja to get excited about, with the forward joining on transfer deadline day.

Why Everton signed Armando Broja

Sean Dyche needs to use the international break wisely to reinvigorate his ranks and turn them away from the depths of the divisional table.

Everton’s ownership and financial situation is still alarming but the squad has been strengthened despite having to sell Amadou Onana to Aston Villa for £50m.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has shown signs of restoring his former level but competition was pursued and landed in the form of Chelsea’s Broja, 22, who signed on a season-long loan move with an option to purchase for a £30m fee.

Activating that clause would mean that the Goodison Park side would be paying their largest transfer fee since signing Onana in the first place.

Described as an “animal” by The Athletic’s Jacob Tanswell, the 6 foot 3 Broja is technical and tenacious and will add a dimension. However, he’s not going to displace Calvert-Lewin off the bat, for the England international is indeed on track to reclaim his former position of power in the Premier League.

Why Dominic Calvert-Lewin is still Everton's main man

It’s been a rocky road for Calvert-Lewin. These past few years have pulled him away from the level that had led talent scout Jacek Kulig to herald him as a “monster” while plying his trade under Carlo Ancelotti.

Last season, though, the 27-year-old enjoyed his most productive campaign in a while, scoring eight goals and adding three assists across 38 matches in all competitions.

There was some understandable rustiness, but ‘DCL’ posted four goals and an assist across his final seven fixtures, leading The Athletic’s Patrick Boyland to note that he looked “like the DCL of old”.

Having scored and assisted during the recent Bournemouth defeat, it’s safe to say that he looks ready to take on the Premier League season and offer his services as a high-level focal point.

The Merseysiders will no doubt be glad that they rejected interest from Chelsea and Newcastle United in their talisman. The Magpies were desperate to land the striker but were dissuaded by Everton’s £40m price tag in June and closed the door on that one.

Calvert-Lewin is out of contract at the end of the campaign, so his value is set to dwindle, but he’s still valued higher than Broja and while Everton look set to eke out his quality instead of cashing in for a price deemed inadequate, it’s hard to say that they haven’t hit the jackpot with him. Who knows, he might just prove to be the difference-maker this year.
